Two lectins with different binding specificities have been isolated from extracts of seeds of Bandeiraea simplicifolia. The first, Bandeiraea lectin I [11] was specific for terminal non-reducing αDGalactosyl residues. It reacted with B substances from human ovarian cysts and with several galactomannans to form precipitin lines in agar gels. Polysaccharides with terminal αDGalactosyl residues, such as larch galactan, did not react. The lectin agglutinated B erythrocytes strongly but also reacted to a lower titre with A₁ and very weakly with A₂ erythrocytes [15, 28] indicating that terminal non-reducing αDGalNAc [24] can …

A procedure is developed to determine the relative economic values of effects of sire of cow and sire of fetus. The economic weights for selection will depend on the time and discount rate. For example, for 10 yr and a 10% discount rate, the relative economic weights are 1.240 and 1.284 for the sire's direct genetic and fetal genetic effects when the fetal effect of the sire affects only the subsequent lactation of the mate of the sire. If the fetal effect is carried over to each future lactation of the mate, the relative economic weights are 1.240 for the …

Food Deprivation And The Regulation Of Meal Size In Larvae Of Chrysopa Carnea, Alan B. Bond

The course of repletion and the effects of food deprivation on meal size were explored in three experiments on larvae of Chrysopa carnea (Neuroptera). Feeding to repletion was found to occur within the first 30 min of exposure to food. Meal size increased as an ogival function of deprivation, up to the limit of gut capacity. Behavioral components involved in the initiation of feeding were little affected by deprivation and did not appear to be inhibited by distention of the gut. Termination of a meal may be mediated by the stimulation of prey-release behavior, rather than by inhibition of feeding.

Sex pheromones isolated from the cuticle of the female tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood, release mating behavior in the malefly at ultra- short range or upon contact with baited decoys. Three active components were iden- tified as 15,19-dimethylheptatriacontane, 17,21-dimethylheptatriacontane, and 15,19,23-trimethylheptatriacontane. Chemical and biological comparisons show that the natural and synthetic compounds are identical.

The principles of selection are reviewed as a basis for discussing selection for protein content of milk. The correlations among components of milk will cause correlated responses in all even when selection is for only one component. Selection for fractional composition of fat or protein would lead to increases in content of fat and protein, but the expected increases in total yields of fat and protein would be much less than if selection were for yield of milk, fat, or protein. Purification schemes were developed which yielded 0.7 to 1.0 mg of alfalfa latent virus (ALV) and pea streak virus (PSV) and 0.1 to 0.3 mg of red clover vein mosaic virus (RCVMV) per gram pea cullivar Lincoln plant tissue (excluding roots). The freezing of the tissue and the use of an appropriate extraction buffer were crucial. Virus from sap was precipitated by 6%(w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG, MW 6,000) and concentrated by two cycles of differential centrifugation. Partially purified virus preparations had a single nucleoprotein component in rate-zonal sucrose and equilibrium cesium chloride density gradient centrifugation. The virus preparations did not …

One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. Analysis Of The Flehmen Display In American Bison (Bison Bison), Brian R. Mahan, Michael P. Munger, Harvey L. Gunderson

A tota1 of 873 Flehmen (lip curl) displays by bison (Bison bison) was recorded and statistically analyzed in relation to individual factors such as age and sex, and external factors such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and Flehmen stimulus to determine if differences between subgroups of individuals existed and if Flehmen was environmentally affected. The mean lip curl display duration for all individuals was 8.4 seconds. Statistical tests of Flehmen duration means grouped by Flehmen stimuli showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). Lip curl duration means for males (8.3 sec.) and females (9.3 sec.), "maturity classes", all age-classes, cow age-classes, and bull age-classes were significantly different (p < 0.05). Because of a marked decrease of duration means for "prime" bulls, some relationship between Flehmen duration and sexual behavior of bulls was suggested. There are two popular myths concerning the eminent philosopher and social psychologist George Herbert Mead: that he published little during his lifetime and that Mind, Self, and Society is his most important sociological work. This misrepresentation of Mead's contributions is partially grounded in the neglect of his work and writings on social reform. The misrepresentation of the significance of the almost seventy articles Mead wrote during his lifetime distorts the meaning of his concepts and has profound implications for symbolic interactionists who claim Mead as one of their founding fathers.

This study was undertaken in an effort to obtain objective data in as nonthreatening a manner as possible concerning the reasons why teachers quit. The 26 former teachers interviewed openly discussed why they chose another occupation, and were willing to rank their reasons. The reasons given and their ranking generally support the present job held by the respondents, as three of the top five factors listed most often related to farming and ranching. Seventeen of the 25 respondents were in farming and ranching.

This study, as well as other studies reviewed, points toward the need for continual follow-up of graduates. …

Assay of frequently collected blood samples in four mature Hereford bulls indicated the existence of a tonic mechanism for the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), i.e., their episodic release was not observed. Increased plasma concentrations of LH and FSH, however, were obtained in response to an intravenous injection of 500 µg of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). These gonadotropins showed similar secretory profiles after GnRH, but the relative magnitude of the LH response (30-fold) was considerably greater than that of the FSH response (sevenfold).

In 9 trials, captive wolves (Canis lupus) were fed prey varying in size from snowshoe (Lepus americanus) to adult deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and the resulting scats were counted. collectible scats were distinguished from liquid, noncollectible stools. In collectible scats, the small prey occurred in greater proportion relative to the prey's weight, and in lesser proportion to the prey's numbers, than did the remains of larger prey. Analysis of the bat fauna of the Antillean Islands suggest that the most probable source of invasion of the islands by bats is by overwater dispersal. The bat fauna of ·the Greater Antilles is unique, a percentage of endemism on each island being over 50 percent except for the Virgin Islands which has 33 percent endemics.

Protein synthesis in reticulocytes and their lysates is regulated by heme. In heme deficiency a heme-regulated translational inhibitor (HRI) that blocks initiation of polypeptide chains is activated. HRI is a protein kinase (ATP: protein phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.37) that specifically phosphorylates the 38,000-dalton subunit of the Met-tRNA_f^Met indin factor (IF), which forms a ternary complex with Met- tRNA_f^Met and GTP, a finding that suggests that the inhibition by HRI involves the phosphorylation of IF. In October, 1969, the Highway Salvage Section of the Arizona State Museum conducted emergency salvage excavations in conjunction with the construction of the Tucson-Nogales Highway. Ten cremations were recovered from a backhoe trench which had been placed within the city limits of Nogales, Arizona. Analysis of the cremations indicated cultural contact between the Trincheras culture of Sonora, Mexico, and the Hohokam culture of the Santa Cruz River Valley in southern Arizona.

The diet of the Atlantic croaker from Mississippi Sound has been examined for the first time. Over 83 taxa were encountered, or more than were reported from croaker in any other region. We also found 60 taxa, 36 of which overlapped with the above, in croaker from various offshore stations in the Gulf of Mexico. In Mississippi Sound the frequency of occurrcnce of items revealed primarily crustaceans followed by polychaetes, molluscs, fishes, and less common items, and, in the open Gulf, molluscs appeared slightly more often than in inshore croaker and than polychaetes in offshore fish. Examined digestive tracts of the red drum in Mississippi Sound contained mostly decapod crustaceans. Crustaceans accounted for 34 of 59 encountered taxa, more than reported from any other region. Nevertheless, the general diet for 104 fish with food contents out of the 107 examined is similar to that reported for red drum in several other studies from other areas. In addition to crustaceans, fishes followed by polychaetes occurred as the most important items (in 99, 43, and 15% of the drum with food, respectively). Blue crabs occurred in even more drum than the frequently encountered penaeid shrimps. Other commercial species …
