Field Evaluation Of Candidate Rodenticide, Milo E. Richmond, Pamela N. Miller
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
During autumn of 1978 and 1979 the New York Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit continued its program of research and management aimed at the pine vole (Pitymys pinetorum) and meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Two herbicides, Ammate-X (E.I. Dupont de Nemours) and Kerb (Rhom S Haas Corp.) along with 4 candidate rodenticides, Bromadiolone and Chlorophacinone (Chempar Inc.), Volak (I.C.I. Chemicals Inc.) and zinc phosphide (Bell Laboratories Inc.) were tested in both orchard and laboratory situations. This work is being conducted in conjunction with a separate research unit project aimed at evaluating the potential of using populations of the …

Management Model For Pine Voles: Preliminary Report, John F. Coyle, Alan R. Tipton
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
The use of computer models in scientific research has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade. One of the primary reasons for this growth is the increased realization that computers and more specifically computer models, can be useful tools in synthe¬sizing large amounts of information and providing insight into problem areas of research and management.
Numerous books and papers have been written on the justification for modeling, the philosophy of modeling, and model development and utilization. Recent reviews of small mammal population models are given by Conley and Nichols (1978) and Stenseth (1977). This paper will not address …

The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Leptophylla (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler
The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Leptophylla (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Ipomoea leptophylla Torr. (Convolvulaceae) is a sprawling dry-site morning glory with two types of extrafloral nectaries: foliar nectaries and nectaries on the outside of the sepals. Both are shown to greatly increase insect visitation to the plant. Ants visiting sepal-surface nectaries significantly decrease flower damage caused by grasshoppers and seed losses caused by bruchids. These results are similar to those for I. carnea and other plants whose extrafloral nectary-ant interactions have been studied, but differ in detail. This is the first demonstration of antiherbivore defense of a prairie plant by nectary visitors.

Ultrastructure Of Sarcocystis Sporocysts From Passerine Birds And Opossums: Comments On Classification Of The Genus Isospora, Edith D. Box, Alan A. Marchiondo, Donald W. Duszynski, C. Patrick Davis
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Sporocysts were obtained from the feces of opossums (Didelphis virginiana) which had been fed muscles of passerine birds (Molothrus ater and Cassidix mexicanus) infected with Sarcocystis. Sporocysts were examined by phase microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Ridges on the surface of the sporocysts outlined four plates. Thin sections of the sporocyst wall showed thickened regions and gaps interpreted as cross sections of the ridges. The sporocyst wall has four major layers with a thick, granular inner layer which resembles the inner layer of sporocysts of related species. Excystation structures are discussed as a …
Parasite Population Regulation: Lethal And Sublethal Effects Of Leptorhynchoides Thecatus (Acanthocephala: Rhadinorhynchidae) On Hyalella Azteca (Amphipoda), Richard L. Uznanski, Brent B. Nickol
Parasite Population Regulation: Lethal And Sublethal Effects Of Leptorhynchoides Thecatus (Acanthocephala: Rhadinorhynchidae) On Hyalella Azteca (Amphipoda), Richard L. Uznanski, Brent B. Nickol
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The hypothesis that Leptorhynchoides thecatus populations are regulated by mortality of heavily infected intermediate hosts, Hyalella azteca, was examined experimentally. Mortality related to the infection process could not be demonstrated because no survivorship difference occurred between amphipod groups exposed to L. thecatus and unexposed control groups after 24 hours Likewise, amphipod mortality could not be associated with infection intensity during this period. Amphipod mortality, growth, and infection intensity were monitored for 25 days after a 24-hour exposure period. Cystacanths were infective to fish after 25 days. Survivorship of exposed amphipods was at least as great as that of unexposed …

Isospora californica (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) in Peromyscus maniculatus (Cricetidae) from White Sands National Monument, New Mexico
This report constitutes a new geographic record for Isospora californica and adds a micrograph of the coccidium, which the original description did not include. The latter is important because to correctly identify coccidia, a photograph as well as a drawing is at times necessary.
Genetic And Economic Implications Of Fetal Effects On The Dam, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. P. Johnson
Genetic And Economic Implications Of Fetal Effects On The Dam, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. P. Johnson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The genetic model for fetal effect on production of the dam is described, and studies on genetic and economic implications are reviewed. The effect on production from the sire of the cow has 1.58 to 3.02 times as much economic value as the effect from the sire of the fetus. The use of mate records in evaluating a sire in addition to daughter records could increase economic gain from selection by 1 to 2% depending on the variation from sire of fetus. Mate records alone do not appear valuable for sire selection. About 1% of the variation in milk yield …

Compensatory Response Of Maturing Corn Kernels Following Simulated Damage By Birds, Paul P. Woronecki, Robert A. Stehn, Richard A. Dolbeer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
(1) A study was made to measure compensatory growth responses and to estimate losses associated with bird damage to maturing corn. (2) Corn kernels contain 20-40% of their final biomass at the time they are usually consumed by blackbirds. (3) Very slight compensation of kernel weight occurred following simulated bird damage to tip kernels. (4) Heavy bird damage, early in kernel development, increased fungal, sprouting, and insect damage before harvest. (5) Estimates of bird damage, subsequent secondary damage, and compensation were affected by the amount of damage, maturity of the kernels at the time of damage, and environmental factors before, …

Ec17-11-80 Nebraska Outdoor Education Series: Plant A Tree, Joe Range, John D. Orr
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Not all trees or shrubs can find a home in your yard or apartment. Help your child to discover a home for the tree or shrub he or she grows or receives. The greatest benefit of this Plant-A-Tree project is being close to a living plant. This project will: introduce five tree planters - one from each area of Nebraska, discuss the parts of tree seeds, give examples of how tree seeds travel, discuss preparation of soil, demonstrate how to grow a seedling tree from seed, demonstrate how to transplant a tree, and offer suggestions for activities and exhibits.
G80-493 Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), Gene H. Deutscher
G80-493 Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the proper selection, nutrition, breeding, and management of replacement beef heifers from weaning to breeding. Proper selection and development of replacement heifers is one of the most important management programs in beef production. Replacement heifers should be selected and managed so they will conceive and calve early in the calving season, provide adequate milk production, and rebreed and calve every 365 days. Heifers bred as yearlings to calve as two-year-olds will produce an extra calf in their lifetime compared to heifers calving as three-year-olds, without detrimental effects on mature size, milk production, or calf weaning weights. The …

G80-509 Canada Thistle, Robert G. Wilson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The growth and control of Canada thistle is covered here.
Canada thistle plant
Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L) Scop.] is a native of Eurasia and was probably introduced to America around 1750. Since that time it has spread throughout the northern part of the United States. Canada thistle is estimated to infest 800,000 acres in northern and western Nebraska.
A perennial that reproduces from seed and by an extensive root system, Canada thistle is dioecious, with the male and female flowers on separate plants. For viable seed to be produced, both male and female plants need to be present.

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech
Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …

Epa's Research Program For Controlling Residential Wood Combustion Emissions, Robert E. Hall, Daryl G. Deangelis
Epa's Research Program For Controlling Residential Wood Combustion Emissions, Robert E. Hall, Daryl G. Deangelis
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
A recently completed study has shown that emissions of participate, carbon monoxide, and organics (including polycyclic organic matter) are relatively high from residential woodburning stoves and fireplaces when compared to emissions from residential gas- and oilfired furnaces. Since these emissions include a number of potentially hazardous compounds; the trend toward greater residential wood usage can have a negative impact on local ambient air quality. EPA is currently studying ways to operate existing stoves and design new stoves to minimize air pollutant emissions.

A Statistical Analysis Of The Quality Of Surface Water In Nebraska, R. A. Engberg
United States Geological Survey: Publications
This report provides descriptive statistics for 29 chemical or biological constituents for 109 stream sites in Nebraska sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1946. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal …

The Interaction Of Behavior Variables In The Development Of Dominance Relations, Patricia Draper
The Interaction Of Behavior Variables In The Development Of Dominance Relations, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Dominance interactions among individuals undoubtedly have both a biological basis and evolutionary significance. Literature on these topics has been copiously cited elsewhere in this book and will not be repeated here. Sex differences in behaviors which separately and together culminate in the ability of an individual to win agonistic encounters are also documented both for human and nonhuman primates. Less attention has been paid, however, to the process by which sex differences in the propensity to behave in a given way interact with socialization experiences of children to produce the familiar usual pattern of male dominance. This chapter proposes to …

Age-Season Adjustment Factors For Alpine, Lamancha, Nubian, Saanen, And Toggenburg Dairy Goats, M. U. Iloeje, T. R. Rounsaville, R. E. Mcdowell, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Multiplicative age-season adjustment factors for milk and fat yields of five breeds of dairy goats were estimated by fitting a three-way, mixed classification model containing random effects for does with fixed effects for herd-year-season and age-season for 7544, 1994, 7456, 3307, and 4599 lactation records collected from 1965 to 1976 from Alpine, La- Mancha, Nubian, Saanen, and Toggenburg dairy goats in the United States. These factors reflect changes in milk and fat yields associated with age and season of freshening. As with dairy cattle, these factors indicated that milk records of goats are affected differently in different seasons for a …
