Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Determination Of The Black-Capped Vireo To Be An Endangered Species

Endangered Species Bulletin

The Service determines the black-capped vireo (Vireo atricapillus) to be an endangered species. This bird formerly bred from Kansas through Oklahoma and Texas to central Coahuila. Mexico. The vireo no longer occurs in Kansas, is gravely endangered in Oklahoma, and is no longer found in several parts of its formerly extensive range in Texas. The black-capped vireo is threatened by brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) nest parasitism and loss of habitat due to such factors as urbanization, grazing, range improvement, and succession. This rule implements the protection provided by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, …

Betaine Transport Imparts Osmotolerance On A Strain Of Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Robert W. Hutkins, William L. Ellefson, Eva R. Kashket Oct 1987

Betaine Transport Imparts Osmotolerance On A Strain Of Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Robert W. Hutkins, William L. Ellefson, Eva R. Kashket

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Unlike most Lactobacilus acidophilus strains, a specific strain, L. acidophilus IF0 3532, was found to grow in rich medium containing 1 M sodium acetate, KCI, or NaCl. This strain could also grow with up to 1.8 M NaCl or 3 M nonelectrolytes (fructose, xylose, or sorbitol) added. Thus, this strain was tolerant to osmotic pressures up to 2.8 osM. A search for an intracellular solute which conferred osmoprotection led to the identification of glycine betaine (betaine). Betaine was accumulated to high concentrations in cells growing in MRS medium supplemented with 1 M KCI or NaCl. Uptake of [14C]betaine …

Congruence Between Objective And Self-Report Data In A Sample Of Young Adolescents, Lisa J. Crockett, John E. Schulenberg, Anne C. Petersen Oct 1987

Congruence Between Objective And Self-Report Data In A Sample Of Young Adolescents, Lisa J. Crockett, John E. Schulenberg, Anne C. Petersen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Methodology texts frequently emphasize the limitations of self-report measures. Empirical information on the validity of self-report data, however, tends to be limited to particular topics and populations. This paper examines the validity of self-report data in a sample of young adolescents for whom objective and self-report data were available on course grades, height, and weight. A comparison of the two kinds of data generally supported the validity of the self-reports, although there was some evidence of response effects. It was concluded that while young adolescents exhibit some systematic errors in reporting, self-reports can provide a useful substitute for some kinds …

Soil-Vegetation Correlations In The Sandhills And Rainwater Basin Wetlands Of Nebraska, Nanette E. Erickson, David M. Leslie Jr., Charles Segelquist

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The National Ecology Center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is supporting a series of field research studies to document relationships between hydric soils and wetland vegetation in selected wetlands throughout the United States. This study is one of that series. It is a continuation of the FWS effort, begun by Wentworth and Johnson (1986), to develop a procedure using vegetation to designate wetlands based on the indicator status of wetland vegetation as described by the FWS "National List of Plants that Occur in Wetlands" (Reed 1986a). This list classifies vascular plants of the U.S. into one of …

A Nebraska Specimen Record Of Clark’S Grebe, Aechmophorus Clarkii (Lawrence), Thomas E. Labedz

Nebraska Bird Review

Clark’s Grebe, formerly known as light-phase Western Grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis clarkii), was elevated to full species status (A. clarkii) in 1985 (American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU) 1983, 1985). This paper presents the first recorded occurrence in Nebraska of Clark’s Grebe and is documented with a specimen. Identification of Clark’s Grebe in the field is discussed, and a comparison is made of the Nebraska specimen with specimen s reported in recent literature.

Size Distribution Of Sediment As Affected By Surface Residue And Slope Length, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, G. E. Varvel Sep 1987

Size Distribution Of Sediment As Affected By Surface Residue And Slope Length, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, G. E. Varvel

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Runoff samples for determination of size distribution of sediment were collected under simulated rainfall conditions at selected downslope distances on plots covered with sorghum and soybean residue at rates ranging from 0.00 to 6.73 t/ha . The effects of surface residue and slope length on size distribution of sediment were evaluated. Substantial movement of sediment in the form of aggregates was found for each of the residue treatments. Significant differences in size distribution of sediment occurred between residue treatments. For a given residue rate, differences in sediment size distribution were found between sorghum and soybean residue. Size distribution of sediment …

Evolution Of Time Constructs And Their Impact On Socioeconomic Planning, F. Gregory Hayden Sep 1987

Evolution Of Time Constructs And Their Impact On Socioeconomic Planning, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The primary focus of the institutionalist perspective is instrumentalist problem solving. Problems are delivered by the institutional process and solved by altering the social structure. To solve socioeconomic problems, planning is necessary. Important to any planning is the question of when actions and events are to occur. To effect new social structures, actions and events must be properly sequenced. An analytical core of sequencing events is time analysis. John R. Commons stated that, in addition to knowing what to do, the economist who has the power and responsibility for planning "must know what, when, how much and how far to …

Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Variation Among Phosphoglucose Isomerase Allozymes From The Wing-Polymorphic Water Strider, Limnoporus Canaliculatusl, Anthony J. Zera Aug 1987

Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Variation Among Phosphoglucose Isomerase Allozymes From The Wing-Polymorphic Water Strider, Limnoporus Canaliculatusl, Anthony J. Zera

Anthony Zera Publications

Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) allozymes were isolated from the wing-polymorphic water strider, Lirnnoporus canaliculatus, and were characterized biochemically with respect to temperature-dependent kinetic and thermostability properties. At higher temperatures, the allozymes exhibited significant differences in Michaelis constant (Km) values for substrates of both the forward and reverse reaction directions. Results were consistent with expectations of adaptive kinetic differentiation based on the latitudinal variation of PGI allele frequencies. PGI genotypes also differed with regard to maximal velocity (Vmax)/Km ratios at higher temperatures. These differences were due primarily, if not exclusively, to allozyme-dependent variation in K …

The debate about the credentials of sociobiology has persisted because scholars have failed to distinguish the varieties of sociobiology and because too little attention has been paid to the details of the arguments that are supposed to support the provocative claims about human social behavior. I seek to remedy both dcfieieneies. After analysis of the relationships among different kinds of sociobiology and contemporary evolutionary theory, I attempt to show how some of the studies of the behavior of nonhuman animals meet the methodological standards appropriate to evolutionary research. I contend that the efforts of E. O. Wilson, Richard Alexander, Charles …

Structural Disulfide Bonds In The Bacillus Thuringiensis Subsp. Israelensis Protein Crystal, Graham A. Couche, Mary A. Pfannenstiel, Kenneth W. Nickerson Jul 1987

Structural Disulfide Bonds In The Bacillus Thuringiensis Subsp. Israelensis Protein Crystal, Graham A. Couche, Mary A. Pfannenstiel, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

We examined disulfide bonds in mosquito larvicidal crystals produced by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis. Intact crystals contained 2.01 x 10-8 mol of free sulfhydryls and 3.24 x 10--8 mol of disulfides per mg of protein. Reduced samples of alkali-solubilized crystals resolved into several proteins, the most prominent having apparent molecular sizes of 28, 70, 135, and 140 kilodaltons (kDa). Non-reduced samples contained two new proteins of 52 and 26 kDa. When reduced, both the 52- and 26-kDa proteins were converted to 28-kDa proteins. Furthermore, both bands reacted with antiserum prepared against reduced 28-kDa protein. Approximately 50% of …

Karyotypic Analysis Of Five Rodents And A Marsupial From Belize, Central America, David W. Burton, John W. Bickham, Hugh H. Genoways, Timothy J. Mccarthy

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Karyotypes and chromosomal banding patterns of six species of small mammals from Belize are presented and discussed in light of relevant data in the literature. Individuals of Heteromys desmarestianus had FN values of 72, which differs from previous reports. G-bands were obtained and compared to fluorescent bands (DAPI) and with the location of NOR sites. The karyotypes of Peromyscus mexicanus, Sigmodon hispidus, Oryzomys couesi, and Ototylomys phyllotis are identical to the karyotypes for these species described in the literature. Active NORs were located on four pairs of chromosomes in O. phyllotis and fluorescent bands obtained with the …

Importance Of Attractant Qualities For Improving A New Coyote Delivery System, Steven M. Ebbert, Daniel B. Fagre Apr 1987

Importance Of Attractant Qualities For Improving A New Coyote Delivery System, Steven M. Ebbert, Daniel B. Fagre

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Changes in effectiveness and nontarget species selectivity of a new system for delivering ingestible substances to coyotes (Canis latrans) were examined by systematically varying odor type and quantity used to attract coyotes to the device. The new delivery system's efficacy was comparable to the M-44 in our tests in south Texas. A synthetic lure improved the effectiveness of the delivery system when applied in amounts of 0.10 cc or 0.50 cc. Varying odor type did not increase the incidence of desirable coyote behavior, such as biting, but did increase rates of visitation.

Control Of Ecosystem Processes By Prairie Dogs And Other Grassland Herbivores, James K. Detling, April D. Whicker Apr 1987

Control Of Ecosystem Processes By Prairie Dogs And Other Grassland Herbivores, James K. Detling, April D. Whicker

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Black-tailed prairie dogs in the mixed-grass prairie at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, create habitat patches characterized by altered species composition, lower standing crops of plants, but higher forage quality. Native wildlife species such as bison, pronghorn, and elk preferentially feed on these prairie dog colonies and likely derive nutritional benefits from doing so.
