13.4.12. Control Of Phragmites Or Common Reed, Diana H. Cross, Karen L. Fleming
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Phragmites, or common reed, is a perennial grass often associated with wetlands. When phragmites is interspersed with open water or with other vegetation, waterbirds and small mammals find cover among the stems. Its dense root systems strengthen dikes and roads. On many sites, however, this robust emergent forms monotypic, impenetrable stands having little value for waterfowl. Ducks occasionally nest on the edges of large stands, but avoid the dense interior.
Phragmites is native to North America and is found worldwide, primarily in lowland temperate regions. Phragmites can occupy upland sites with seeps, or grow in brackish or fresh water several …

Nebraska Policy Choices (1989): Preface, Miles T. Bryant, Christine M. Reed, Patricia O'Connell
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
The eight chapters in Nebraska Policy Choices: Education represent the work of University of Nebraska faculty from both the Lincoln and Omaha campuses, as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center. These authors participated in a unique effort jointly sponsored by the University of Nebraska Central Administration, College of Education (University of Nebraska at Omaha), Teachers College (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), and Center for Public Affairs Research (University of Nebraska at Omaha). Unlike earlier volumes of Nebraska Policy Choices, the focus of this volume is on one critically important area: education policy.
Effects Of Noncatastrophic Control Technologies That Alter Life History Parameters On Insect Population Growth: A Simulation Study, James E. Throne
Effects Of Noncatastrophic Control Technologies That Alter Life History Parameters On Insect Population Growth: A Simulation Study, James E. Throne
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
I investigated the effects of noncatastrophic control technologies that alter life history parameters (such as the use of resistant plant varieties) on the growth of insect populations. I used a computer model to simulate population dynamics of the flat grain beetle, Cryptolestes pusillus (Schonherr). The effects of increasing duration of larval development (by 5, 10, 15, or 20 d) or decreasing fecundity or larval survival (by 25, 50, or 75%) on population growth were simulated. Growth curves for populations with reductions in fecundity or larval survival were nearly identical. The effects of decreasing fecundity or larval survival were apparent during …

Seasonal Flight Activity Of The Maize Weevil, Sitophllus Zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), And The Rice Weevil, S. Oryzae (L.), In South Carolina, James E. Throne, L. Daniel Cline
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Flight activity of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidne) and S. oryzae (L.) was monitored during 1987-88 with sticky traps at three sites in South Carolina. Weevils were caught from late March to early November. The results indicate that temperature is the major factor determining seasonal flight activity of these weevils. More S. zeamais than S. oryzae were trapped at all sites. Sitophilus oryzae were abundant only at the site at which wheat was stored. There was no apparent pattern to flight activity within a storage site. The results indicate that there is little night activity around bins in which recommended …

Controlled Pasture Burning In The Folklife Of The Kansas Flint Hills, James Hoy
Controlled Pasture Burning In The Folklife Of The Kansas Flint Hills, James Hoy
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Flint Hills of Kansas, forming a band approximately fifty miles wide, start north of Manhattan near the Nebraska border and run south nearly two hundred miles, at which point they merge into the Osage Hills of Oklahoma. This area, together with the row of counties bordering the Flint Hills to the east, is sometimes labeled the Bluestem Grazing Region; its four million acres of native grass represent the remaining one percent of a tallgrass prairie that once stretched north to Canada and east to Indiana and Ohio. 1 Cattle raising in the Flint Hills portion of this region differs …

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Johnson and Milby have produced a valuable bibliographic aid for the serious student of the flora of the southern Great Plains. The listing, in one place, of 862 references from such diverse sources is a major contribution by itself. The addition of indexes for authors and subject-incontext greatly increases the utility of this reference book, making it easy to search among all 800-plus citations for ones of particular interest. This book should find a home in biology libraries across the region.

African Marriage Systems: Perspectives From Evolutionary Ecology, Patricia Draper
African Marriage Systems: Perspectives From Evolutionary Ecology, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
There are many characteristics of contemporary African societies that puzzle demographers and others concerned with economic and social modernization. One of the most prominent is that the birth rate remains in both urban and rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa in spite of the presence of several factors that supposedly promote lowering of fertility (McNicoll 1980). Some of these factors are increased survivorship of children into adulthood, increased availability of education and levels of educational attainment (for both sexes), increased urbanization, and increased monetarization of the economy via migratory wage labor and cash cropping. Each of these is normally thought to …

G89-908 Controlling Snake Problems Around Homes, Ron J. Johnson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Controlling snake problems around residences is covered here. Occasionally people encounter snakes around their homes or in other places, and wonder what to do about the snakes or whether they are dangerous. In nearly all cases, these are harmless types such as garter snakes or bullsnakes. However, Nebraska does have four kinds of poisonous snakes: the prairie rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, small rattlesnake, copperhead.

13.4.11. Control Of Purple Loosestrife, Daniel Q. Thompson
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Purple loosestrife is an herbaceous perennial weed that is native to Eurasia and probably arrived in eastern North America with early maritime traffic. The spread of this alien by 1900 (Fig. 1) was closely associated with canal and waterway traffic. By 1985 (Fig. 2), this aggressive weed had spread into all of the contiguous States north of the 35th parallel except Montana; similarly, all of the southern provinces of Canada had been invaded. In the last 20 years, loosestrife has become well established in reclamation projects and riparian wetlands in the West and Northwest. It has also invaded estuarine marshes …

Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Thirty-six fluoroaliphatic sulfones were tested to determine their residual toxicity to Solenopsis invicta Buren in soil. Six of the compounds gave >90% kill of the ants after they were exposed for 4 days at 10 ppm. When tested at 1.0 ppm, only one compound, AI3-10841, gave appreciable mortality. This compound was tested at 10 ppm in soil held outdoors under ambient summer conditions. Mortality 8 days following initial exposure to samples of this soil was 100% for 12 weeks and 91 to 100% from 20 to 36 weeks.

The Cost Of Misapplication Of Herbicides, Robert Grisso, Elbert C. Dickey, Larry D. Schulze
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A field survey of 103 private herbicide applicators was conducted during the spring of 1986 in 12 central and eastern Nebraska counties. The results showed that only 30% of the cooperators were applying herbicides within 5% of their intended application rate. Twenty-six percent of the cooperators over-applied herbicides during a single application, with an average cost due to misapplication of $3.11/ha ($1.26/a). If these values were extended over Nebraska, $4.26 million are expended for extra herbicides which were not necessary. The average cost of over application was in excess of $570 per application. Forty-four percent of the cooperators under-applied herbicides …

Trichome Development In Arabidopsis Thaliana. Ii. Lsolation And Complementation Of The Glabrous1 Gene, Patricia L. Herman, M. David Marks
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
We are using the formation of trichomes in Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system to study gene expression during cellular differentiation. To initiate the molecular characterization of this system, we tagged and isolated a gene that is specifically required for the development of the specialized trichome cell. We confirmed the identity of this gene, GLABROUS1 (GL1), by complementation. These results demonstrate that a crucial gene in a plant developmental pathway can be successfully identified by complementation.

Geochemical Evidence For Suppression Of Pelagic Marine Productivity At The Cretaceous/Tertiary Boundary, James C. Zachos, Michael A. Arthur, Walter E. Dean
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The normal, biologically productive ocean is characterized by a gradient of the 13C /12C ratio from surface to deep waters. Here we present stable isotope data from planktonic and benthic microfossils across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in the North pacific, which reveal a rapid and complete breakdown in this biologically mediated gradient. The fluxes of barium (a proxy for organic carbon) and CaCO, also decrease significantly at the time of the major marine plankton extinctions. The implied substantial reduction in oceanic primary productivity persisted for ~0.5 Myr before the carbon isotope gradient was gradually re-established. In addition, the …

Dispersion Of Displaying Male Sage Grouse Ii. The Role Of Female Dispersion, J. W. Bradbury, Robert M. Gibson, C. E. Mccarthy, S. L. Vehrencamp
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The degree to which male sage grouse select lek sites and females select nesting sites to maximize proximity to the other sex was examined by contrasting male dispersions with the dispersions and movements of females in the months preceeding incubation. Wintering females exhibit highly overlapping ranges due to shared use of central refuging areas. In late winter and early spring, females move an average 9 km from wintering areas to select nest sites and males begin occupying leks. Pooled evidence suggests that females select nest sites independently of male dispersion whereas males adjust lek occupation so as to maximize proximity …
