Perceived Risks Of Deer-Related Vehicle Accidents: Influence On Deer Population Preferences Of The Residents Of Tompkins County, New York, Richard C. Stedman, Rebecca J. Stout, Barbara A. Knuth, Daniel J. Decker
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
High populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in much of the eastern United States have increased the probability of deer-related vehicle accidents (DRVAs). These accidents are very costly in terms of vehicle repair and have the potential for serious physical injury to motorists. DRVAs are increasing rapidly in suburban areas, where deer may also cause other types of damage (i.e., to gardens or ornamental shrubs). In these suburban areas, wildlife professionals have limited deer management options. We hypothesized that the peoples' perception of the potential risk posed by DRVAs interacts with the perceived benefits provided by deer, to …
Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart
Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
Strategies for managing wildlife damage may be divided into 3 broad categories: direct manipulation of populations, manipulation of behavioral or ecological traits of pest species, and manipulation of environmental features. For each of these categories, I review the importance of ecological considerations in determining the effectiveness of management strategies. Proper incorporation of ecological information is important to the success of management strategies in all 3 categories. I predict that future demands will increase for ecologically-based strategies that require minimal intervention, and for integration of management strategies that simultaneously address problems posed by both vertebrate and invertebrate pests. Several recent ecologically-based …

Comparison Of Methods For Detecting Voles Under Apple Trees, Mark E. Tobin, Milo E. Richmond, Richard M. Engeman
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
We conducted a study in 2 heavily infested orchards in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York to evaluate methods for detecting the presence of meadow voles (MV, Microtus pennsylvanicus) and pine voles (PV, M. pinetorum) under apple trees. We quantified several possible signs indicating the presence of voles in each of the 4 quadrants under the canopy of each tree, and then set and monitored traps until capture success in the orchard declined to zero. There was no evidence that the 4 quadrants differed with respect to any of the variables examined. The apple slice index (ASI) was …

Book Review: The Beetles Of The World (Moron, M.A. 1990), Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Depending on the audience, the Sciences Nat series on beetles of the world is either warmly embraced for its beautiful photography "enabling" picture identifications or rejected because of its simplistic approach to complex taxonomic issues. Moron, operating under a narrow set of editorial guidelines (e.g., no keys), has done a remarkably good job at bridging this gap with his treatment of Pelidnotina. The result is not only a beautiful book (as most in this series are), but one that is also scientifically credible. Given that any revision of Plusiotis deserved a color rendition, and that the Sciences Nat series is …

Geographic Variation In Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Don E. Wilson, Michael A. Bogan, Robert L. Brownell Jr., A. M. Burdin, M. K. Maminov
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Univariate and multivariate analyses of 20 skull characters of 304 adult sea otters from throughout the geographic range strongly suggest that three subspecies should be recognized. The nominate form, Enhydra lutris lutris, occurs from the Kuril Islands north to the Commander Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Individuals of E. l. lutris are characterized by large size and wide skulls with short nasal bones. E. 1. nereis is found along the California coast and off San Nicolas Island, where the species recently has been reintroduced from coastal California. Specimens of E. 1. nereis have narrow skulls with a long …

Perspectives On Wildlife Nuisance Control: Results Of A Wildlife Damage Control Firm's Customer Survey, Lynn A. Braband, Kevin D. Clark
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
Customers of Critter Control, Ins, offices were surveyed in 1990 and 1991 to examine their views and experience nuisance wildlife. Most of the survey respondents were having problems with raccoons (Procyon lotor), squirrels (Sciurus), skunks (Mephitis mephitis), woodchucks (Marmata monax), and moles (Talpidae). Approximately 25% of the respective attempted to control the nuisance situation themselves before contacting Critter Control. Most customers approved of the control of rats/mice (Muridae), moles, snakes, bats (Chiroptera), pigeons (Columba livia), and skunks. Most disapproves lethal control of deer (Odocoileus spp. ), geese (Branta …

Use Of Drc-1339 To Eliminate Gulls And Re-Establish A Tern Nesting Colony In Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, Bradford G. Blodget, Laura Henze
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
DRC-1339 was used in 1990 and 1991 to reverse gull (Laridae) domination at Ram Island in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, a site historically important to the endangered roseate tern (Sterna dougallii). Reduction of the very dense gull population at Ram Island and reclamation of the island for nesting terms is seen as a challenge, especially considering the site's proximity to New Bedford, the largest commercial fishery on the Atlantic Seaboard. During 1990 and 1991, gull productivity at Ram Island was completely suppressed Eight hundred twenty-three and 172 gulls were recovered dead following treatments in 1990 and 1991. Females predominated nearly …

Salsuginus Yutanensis N. Sp. (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) From Fundulus Sciadicus In Clear Creek Of Eastern Nebraska, Michael T. Ferdig, Mary Ann Mcdowell, John J. Janovy Jr.
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
Salsuginus yutanensis n. sp. (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) is described from the gills of the Plains topminnow, Fundulus sciadicus Cope, from Clear Creek in eastern Nebraska. Salsuginus yutanensis is distinguished from previously described species by having a shorter accessory piece and different hamulus proportions, especially in the relative lengths of deep and superficial roots. In addition, the angles between deep and superficial roots distinguish S. yutanensis from several congeners.

Insect Immune Response To Bacterial Infection Is Mediated By Eicosanoids, David W. Stanley-Samuelson, Ellen Jensen, Kenneth Nickerson, Kristina C. Tiebel, Clyde Ogg, Ralph W. Howard
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Inhibition of eicosanoid formation in larvae of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta, using specific inhibitors of phospholipase A2, cyclooxygenase, and lipoxygenase, severely weakened the ability of larvae to clear the bacterium Serratia marcescens from their hemolymph. The reduced capability to remove bacteria is associated with increased mortality due to these bacteria. There is a dose-dependent relationship between the phospholipase A2 inhibitor dexamethasone and both the reduced bacterial clearance and increased larval mortality. The dexamethasone effects on larval survival were reversed by treatment with arachidonic acid. Maleic acid, a nonspecific antioxidant, did not interfere with the insects' …

Cells That Express All Five Proteins Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus From Cloned Cdnas Support Replication, Assembly, And Budding Of Defective Interfering Particles, Asit K. Pattnaik, Gail W. Wertz
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
An alternative approach to structurefunction analysis of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) gene products and their interactions with one another during each phase of the viral life cycle is described. We showed previously by using the vaccinia viruslT7 RNA polymerase expression system that when cells expressing the nucleocapsid protein (N), the phosphoprotein (NS), and the large polymerase protein (L) of VSV were superinfected with defective interfering (DI) particles, rapid and efflicient replication and amplification of DI particle RNA occurred. Here, we demonstrate that all five VSV proteins can be expressed simultaneously when cells are cotransfected with plasmids containing the matrix protein …

Fixing Coccidian Oocysts Is Not An Adequate Solution To The Problem Of Preserving Protozoan Type Material, Donald W. Duszynski, Scott Lyell Gardner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Fresh (36 days old) sporulated oocysts of Eimeria nieschulzi were divided into 7 groups. Control oocysts were maintained at 23 C in 2% aqueous (w/v) K2Cr2O7. The 6 experimental groups were mixed with either Bouin's solution, 10% aqueous (v/v) buffered formalin, Karnovsky's solution, glutaraldehyde, paraformaldehyde, or 70% aqueous (v/v) ethanol (EtOH). After 115 days, oocysts from all 7 groups were examined under oil immersion to determine the effect of fixation on their structural integrity. The parameters examined were lengths and widths of oocysts and sporocysts, percent sporulation (%S), and percent crenation (%C) of oocysts …

Weimar Culture And The Rise Of National Socialism: The Kampfbund Für Deutsche Kultur, Alan E. Steinweis
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Between 1928 and 1932, the National Socialist movement transformed itself from an insurgent fringe party into Germany's most potent political force. The most important factor in this dramatic turnabout in political fortunes was the rapid deterioration of the German economy beginning in 1929. It does not, however, logically follow that the German people simply fell into the lap of the party and its charismatic leader. To the contrary, the party aggressively employed sophisticated propagandistic and organizational strategies for attracting and mobilizing diverse segments of German society. With the onset of the economic crisis, and the consequent social and political turmoil, …

In developing an immunometric assay of intact parathyrin (parathyroid hormone, PTH), we found that affinity chromatography is a useful tool in purifying and optimizing the labeling conditions for acridinium ester-labeled antibodies. ... In summary, affinity chromatography was found to be useful in the purification of acridinium ester-labeled antibodies, particularly for removing denatured antibodies from the prepared label and for monitoring the amount of active labeled antibodies produced.
Cadmium Adsorption On Iron Oxides In The Presence Of Alkaline-Earth Elements, Christina Cowan, John M. Zachara, Charles T. Resch
Cadmium Adsorption On Iron Oxides In The Presence Of Alkaline-Earth Elements, Christina Cowan, John M. Zachara, Charles T. Resch
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Cadmium sorption on Fe2O3 • H2O(am) in the presence of alkaline-earth cations was investigated with emphasis on the Cd-Ca binary system. In binary-element sorption experiments with Ca, Mg, Sr, and Ba, competition was observed primarily in Cd-Ca binary mixtures, which were studied at three ionic strengths (0.5, 0.1, and 0.005 M). The extent of competition increased with increasing Ca concentration. In single-element experiments changes in ionic strength (between 0.005 and 0.5 M) did not influence Cd sorption but did affect Ca sorption, implying that a portion of the Ca surface complexes were outer sphere. The …

Coyote Space Use In Relation To Prey Abundance, L. Scott Mills, Frederick F. Knowlton
Coyote Space Use In Relation To Prey Abundance, L. Scott Mills, Frederick F. Knowlton
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Food abundance is an important factor determining space use in many species, but its effect on carnivore home range and territory size has rarely been investigated. We explored the relationship between food abundance for the coyote (Canis latrans) and space use in two study areas in the northern Great Basin, where the primary prey, the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus), fluctuates dramatically in abundance. At one site, home ranges and temtories were significantly larger during a time of prey scarcity than when prey was abundant. Coyotes on the second site had similar-size home ranges and territories at low and high prey …

Windbreaks And Wildlife, Ron J. Johnson, Mary M. Beck, James R. Brandle
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Windbreaks can support wildlife that add beauty and pleasure to our lives. They also sustain birds that eat insect pests, improve hunting opportunities, and provide a focal point for family outdoor activities. The world around us would be less appealing without the stimulation - the color, sounds, tracks, and mystery - of wild creatures; windbreaks help wildlife and in some areas are essential to survival of the wildlife we enjoy. You can add wildlife benefits to windbreak plantings whether your main goal is to shelter crops, livestock, + roads, or a home or farmstead.

Ec91-735 The Impact Of Nitrogen And Irrigation Management And Vadose Zone Conditions On Ground Water Contamination By Nitrate-Nitrogen, K.D. Frank, Darrell Watts, Andrew Christiansen, Edwin Penas
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The single largest contaminant found in ground water samples taken throughout Nebraska is nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate-N). Much of it reaches the ground water as a "non-point source" contaminant leached out of the crop root zone.
Nitrate-N is essential to corn production. However, when leached from the crop root zone it can become a major source of ground water contamination. There are serious contamination problems in shallow aquifers beneath several river valleys in Nebraska. Increasing nitrate-N concentrations are beginning to appear in deeper aquifer.

Temporal Analysis And Spatial Mapping Of Lymantria Dispar Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus Transcripts And In Vitro Translation Polypeptides, James M. Slavicek
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Genomic expression of the Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdMNPV) was studied. Viral specific transcripts expressed in cell culture at various times from 2 through 72 h postinfection were identified and their genomic origins mapped through Northern analysis. Sixty-five distinct transcripts were identified in this analysis. Most viral transcripts were expressed late in infection, and originated from throughout the viral genome. Viral polypeptides expressed in infected 652Y cells were labeled with [35S]methionine and identified by autoradiography after separation by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Viral protein synthesis was found to occur in a sequential manner. Four proteins were …

In Vitro Assembly Of Apophytochrome And Apophytochrome Deletion Mutants Expressed In Yeast With Phycocyanobilin, Lily Deforce, Ken-Ichi Tomizawa, Naoko Ito, Dave Farrens, Pill-Soon Song, Masaki Furuya
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Recombinant pea type I phytochrome apoprotein expressed in yeast is shown to assemble in vitro with phycocyanobilin to produce a photoreversible phytochromelike adduct. As an initial investigation of the amino acid sequence requirements for chromophore incorporation, three phyA gene product deletion mutants were produced in yeast. Truncation of the N-terminal tail to residue 46 demonstrates that this region is not critical to bilin attachment, but a deletion mutant lacking 222 amino acids from the N terminus failed to yield holophytochrome in vitro, under the same conditions. A mutant comprising a deletion of the C terminus to residue 548 …
Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought has been a prevalent feature of the American landscape during the latter part of the 1980s, producing serious socioeconomic and environmental consequences. These recent experiences with drought have renewed concern about the inadequacy of federal and state contingency planning efforts and the lack of coordination for assessment and response efforts between these levels of government. This paper presents the results of research aimed at facilitating the preparation of drought contingency plans by state government in conjunction with a state’s overall water management planning activity. The ten-step drought plan development process reported is intended to improve mitigation efforts through more …
Modeling Age-Specific Mortality For Marine Mammal Populations, Jay Barlow, Peter Boveng
Modeling Age-Specific Mortality For Marine Mammal Populations, Jay Barlow, Peter Boveng
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
A method is presented for estimating age-specific mortality based on minimal information: a model life table and an estimate of longevity. This approach uses expected patterns of mammalian survivorship to define a general model of age-specific mortality rates. One such model life table is based on data for northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) using Siler’s (1979) 5-parameter competing risk model. Alternative model life tables are based on historical data for human females and on a published model for Old World monkeys. Survival rates for a marine mammal species are then calculated by scaling these models by the longevity …
