Area Conservation Tillage Meetings-A Successful Educational Program, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, David P. Shelton, Robert Grisso, Keith Glewen Oct 1991

Area Conservation Tillage Meetings-A Successful Educational Program, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, David P. Shelton, Robert Grisso, Keith Glewen

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Interest in conservation tillage began to increase in the early 1980s, and farmers wanted information on how to adopt and manage various tillage and planting systems. Area conservation tillage meetings were developed by the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension to provide the needed information on a regional basis. Local extension agents and Soil Conservation Service personnel helped extension specialists determine program content. The multidisciplinary meetings included farmer presentations and allowed space and time for commercial exhibits. About 80% of respondents to meeting evaluations indicated they planned to change their tillage practices as a result of the information presented.

The Niche Of Salsuginus Thalkeni, A Gill Parasite Of Fundulus Zebrinus, John J. Janovy Jr., Mary Ann Mcdowell, Michael T. Ferdig Oct 1991

The Niche Of Salsuginus Thalkeni, A Gill Parasite Of Fundulus Zebrinus, John J. Janovy Jr., Mary Ann Mcdowell, Michael T. Ferdig

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Distribution of a monogenean parasitic helminth Salsuginus thalkeni on the gills of the fish Fundulus zebrinus is described by calculation of mean positions and niche breadths on the linear spatial resource gradients gill filament length, gill arch length and arch number. All distributions are given for parasites in the presence and absence of various combinations of potential competitors, namely the 6 other parasite species that occupy the same host species. Filament niche breadth was narrowest in the absence of potential competitors; breadth on arch was widest in the presence of potential competitors. Breadth on both resources was correlated positively with …

Track Physics Model Of Radiation Effects, Robert Katz Sep 1991

Track Physics Model Of Radiation Effects, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiation effects induced by heavy ions in many materials with diverse end points are well described by the conceptual structure and equations of track physics, first developed for heavy ion tracks in nuclear emulsions. The model describes scintillators, biological cell inactivation and mutation, radiation chemistry, latent tracks in insulators, the response of resists to heavy ions, and other systems. A detector is taken to be composed of small targets whose response to ionizing radiation is principally to secondary electrons. The response is calibrated through determination of the probability of target (in)activation as a function of the absorbed dose of γ …

Notes On Ant Larvae 1989-1991, George C. Wheeler, Jeanette Wheeler Sep 1991

Notes On Ant Larvae 1989-1991, George C. Wheeler, Jeanette Wheeler

Insecta Mundi

In 1976 we published "Ant Larvae: Review and Synthesis," which we regarded as a summary of our life-time of research. During the following years so many new larvae were added to our collection and so much was published about ant larvae that we decided another general treatment was desirable; so in 1986 we published a "Ten-Year Supplement" to include additions and revisions to our Memoir. In 1987 and 1988 additional material warranted a supplement to the "l0-year Supplement" in 1989a. This article is the third supplement to the Memoir.

In the supplement, two genera are characterized, one generic characterization is …

Philonthus Furvus Nordmann, 1837 And Its Allies In Mexico And Central America (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), A. Smetana

Insecta Mundi

The Mexican and Central American species associated with Philonthus firvus Nordmann, 1837 are reviewed. Nine species are treated, two of them, P. oenotrus and P. melampus, both from Mexico, are described as new. Philonthus flohri Sharp, 1876 is removed from synonymy with P. furvus. All species are described and illustrated, and a key is added to aid in their identification. All available records from Mexico and Central America, and biological data for the species are provided. Lectotypes are designated for: P. flohri Sharp, 1876; P. sallaei Sharp, 1885; P. fissilis Sharp, 1885; P. nigerrimus Erichson, 1840.

The Genus Vaejovis In Sonora, Mexico (Scorpiones, Vaejovidae), W. David Sissom

Insecta Mundi

The genus Vaejovis C. L. Koch in the Mexican state of Sonora is reviewed, based on the examination of numerous specimens from United States collections. Four species are reported to occur there: Vaejovis spinigerus (Wood), V. confusus Stahnke, V. sonorae Williams, and V. decipiens Hoffmann. Distributional information for all four species is updated, and a key is provided to facilitate identification. The subspecies V. spinigerus sonorensis Hoffmann is synonymized with V. spinigerus. The record for V. gravicaudus Williams on Isla Tiburon (Williams 1980) is demonstrated to be a misidentification resulting from atypical variation in the closely related V. spinigerus …

The Genus Serradigitus In Sonora, Mexico, With Descriptions Of Four New Species (Scorpiones, Vaejovidae), W. David Sissom, Scott A. Stockwell

Insecta Mundi

Taxonomic characters of the recently resurrected scorpion genus Serradigitus Stahnke are discussed, leading to changes in the diagnosis and composition of the genus. Four species, S. baueri (Gertsch), S. bechteli (Williams), S. littoralis (Williams), and S. pacificus (Williams) are transferred into Serradigitus from the genus Vaejovis. The diversity of Serradigitus and distribution of its species in the Mexican state of Sonora are investigated. Serradigitus hearnei (Williams) and S. subtilimanus (Soleglad) are reported for the first time there, and four new species are described (two of which also occur in the United States): S. allredi from southern Arizona and central …

Threatened And Endanger Species Of Wetiands And Waterways In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ann Burruss Sep 1991

Threatened And Endanger Species Of Wetiands And Waterways In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ann Burruss

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Wetlands and waterways, including perennial and intermittent streams, creeks, and rivers, are habitats for many rare animal and plant species. Wetlands in many areas continue to decline in acreage and suffer adverse impacts from conversion and development. Waterways are also under pressure from channelization and leveeing.

This study has two major components. First, a series of databases was developed that includes animals and plant species that are wetland or waterway dependent and found in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, or Nebraska. The databases allow ready access to detailed information on each species and probable locations within each state. The plant and animal …

Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae-Induced Thymic Lesions In Mice And Pigs, D.L. Stine, M.J. Huether, Rodney A. Moxley, Subramaniam Srikumaran Sep 1991

Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae-Induced Thymic Lesions In Mice And Pigs, D.L. Stine, M.J. Huether, Rodney A. Moxley, Subramaniam Srikumaran

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Actinobacillus pkuropneumoniae produces several hemolysins/cytotoxins that may be important in the pathogenesis of acute lesions. Little is known, however, about the role of these virulence factors in chronic disease or the carrier state. We investigated the effects of live bacterial infection and transthoracic injection of a sterile culture supernatant on primary lymphoid organs and lymphocyte populations. Transthoracic inoculation of mice or intranasal inoculation of pigs with virulent A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes 1 and 7 induced thymic cortical lymphoid necrosis. These lesions were reproduced in mice by transthoracic injection of a concentrated sterile culture supernatant. The cytotoxic effect of this culture supernatant …

Parasites And Sexual Selection: A Macroevolutionary Perspective, Deborah A. Mclennan, Daniel R. Brooks Sep 1991

Parasites And Sexual Selection: A Macroevolutionary Perspective, Deborah A. Mclennan, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The Hamilton-Zuk hypothesis postulates a causal link between parasitism and the evolution of epigamic traits by intersexual selection. Oversimplified assumptions about basic parasite biology, ambiguous formulation of the hypothesis, and poor communication between ethologists and parasitologists have hampered its testing. The hypothesis is supported at the microevolutionary level if females show significant preference for lightly or uninfected males, if intensity of infection reflects host resistance to parasites that depress host fitness by causing disease, and if intensity of infectionis related to the degree of epigamic development. It must be shown that particular parasites cause disease, that the host population is …

Global Change In The High Plains Of North America, Jane H. Bock, William D. Bowman, Carl E. Bock Aug 1991

Global Change In The High Plains Of North America, Jane H. Bock, William D. Bowman, Carl E. Bock

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The High Plains of North America extends from Canada to northern Mexico. This grassland region is subject to prolonged drought, herbivory, and wildfire. Organisms that are indigenous to the High Plains are adapted to these environmental factors. Periodic droughts occur at inexact, but few year, intervals. The grazing by free ranging bison, the indigenous large herbivore, has been replaced by grazing of fenced domestic stock. Fire regimes throughout human occupation of the region have been greatly influenced by human activities. Cultivation of wheat and corn also is carried out in the region.

Predicted climate changes in this region are increased …

Review Of Sustainable Agriculture In Temperate Zones, Charles A. Francis, Cornelia Butler Flora, And Larry D. King, Eds., David R. Lighthall Aug 1991

Review Of Sustainable Agriculture In Temperate Zones, Charles A. Francis, Cornelia Butler Flora, And Larry D. King, Eds., David R. Lighthall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The editors of Sustainable Agriculture in Temperate Zones have succeeded in compiling the diverse range of issues orbiting the expansive and somewhat nebulous concept of sustainable agriculture. The book contains well-written chapters by established experts drawn primarily from the mainstream sustainable agriculture movement within US land grant universities. The strength of the book is the authors' cogent reviews of leading edge research in their respective fields of expertise. These areas include soil chemistry and biology, plant breeding, crop rotations and legumes, pest management, pasture management, conversion to sustainable systems, production economics, rural development, and agricultural policy. Added to this eclectic …

Review Of The Wild Oat Inflorescence And Seed: Anatomy, Development And Morphology, By M. V. S. Raju, David M. Sutherland

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This slim volume describes a detailed study of the reproductive parts of Avena farua, the wild oat plant--a common weed in the northern plains and the probable ancestor of the cultivated oat. The book integrates the author's own work with information from available literature and includes lengthy technical descriptions of the structure and the growth of the inflorescence, the floret, the ovule, the pollen grain, the embryo, the seed, and the young seedling. Throughout the work, the author relates the wild oat's structure and development to other grasses, other monocotyledons, and other seed plants, offering evolutionary interpretations of many …

Review Of Harvest Of Opportunity: New Horizons For Farm Women, By Lois L. Ross, Katherine Jensen Aug 1991

Review Of Harvest Of Opportunity: New Horizons For Farm Women, By Lois L. Ross, Katherine Jensen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Journalist Lois Ross has organized interviews with twenty-four contemporary farm women of the Canadian prairie provinces into four categories of women's entrepreneurship in the face of the farm crisis of the 1980s. With only a six-page introduction to the volume and briefer chapter prefaces, it is in many ways a book ready to be written. The author defended the interviews, edited only for length and redundance, in the same ways I have often argued for "qualitative" research in saying that the words of the women themselves speak better to the "feelings or frustrations, apprehension or optimism, barriers and breakthroughs" than …

The Lucanidae And Passalidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

A faunal study of the five species of Lucanidae and one species of Passalidae that occur in Nebraska is presented. All of these species are near the extreme western limit of their geographic range in North America, and five of the six species are reported from Nebraska for the first time. The treatment for each species consists of synonymy, description, general distribution, Nebraska locality records, temporal distribution in the state, remarks on identification, reference to larval descriptions when available, and information about the biology and ecology of each species when known. Distribution maps, showing the Nebraska records, are given for …

Estimated Breeding Values For Meat Characteristics Of Crossbred Cattle With An Animal Mode1, L. Dale Van Vleck, A. F. Hakim, Larry V. Cundiff, R. M. Koch, J. D. Crouse, K. G. Boldman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Longissimus muscle area, shear force measure, and sensory panel scores for flavor, juiciness, and tenderness, and marbling score were obtained from 682 steer carcasses, resulting from crosses among five Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds. The single-trait model used included birth year and as covariates breed fractions, weaning age, and days on feed. The numerator relationship matrix was for 1,350 animals (682 steers, 74 pure breed and 52 F1-cross sires and 542 dams). The coefficient matrix was inverted to examine standard errors of prediction. Estimated breeding value is the sum of the estimate of genetic deviation and the weighted (fractions) …

Direct Responses To Selection For Increased Litter Size, Decreased Age At Puberty, Or Random Selection Following Selection For Ovulation Rate In Swine, W. R. Lamberson, R. K. Johnson, D. R. Zimmerman, T. E. Long Aug 1991

Direct Responses To Selection For Increased Litter Size, Decreased Age At Puberty, Or Random Selection Following Selection For Ovulation Rate In Swine, W. R. Lamberson, R. K. Johnson, D. R. Zimmerman, T. E. Long

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Nine generations of selection for high ovulation rate were followed by two generations of random selection and then eight generations of selection for increased litter size at birth, decreased age at puberty, or continued random selection in the high ovulation rate line. A control line was maintained with random selection. Line means were regressed on generation number and on cumulative selection differentials to estimate responses to selection and realized heritabilities. Genetic parameters also were estimated by mixedmodel procedures, and genetic trends were estimated with an animal model. Response to selection for ovulation rate was about 3.7 eggs. Response in litter …
