Waterfowl Management Handbook
Most waterfowl managers envision typical waterfowl habitat as the undulating or flat terrain characteristic of the prairie pothole region of the north-central United States or the aspen parklands of Canada. However, several other habitats in North America provide valuable resources for breeding and migrating waterfowl. Among these is the Rocky Mountain region of the western United States, which stretches in a band 100500 miles (160800 km) wide and 1,240 miles (1,984 km) long from south-central New Mexico to northern Montana (Figure).
Some Rocky Mountain wetland complexes contain waterfowl breeding densities that equal or exceed those of prairie breeding habitat, and …

G92-1111 Mineral And Vitamin Nutrition Of Dairy Cattle, Rick J. Grant
G92-1111 Mineral And Vitamin Nutrition Of Dairy Cattle, Rick J. Grant
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide focuses on the best sources of minerals and vitamins, current requirements for production, and feeding practices to best meet these requirements and promote health and productivity of dairy cattle. Dairy cattle require at least 17 minerals and three vitamins in their diet for optimal milk production, reproductive performance, and herd health. Although classical mineral or vitamin deficiency symptoms are rare, in many cases under- and overfeeding of certain minerals and vitamins does occur. Even small imbalances or deficiencies can develop into reproductive, health, and milk production problems. As herd milk production averages in Nebraska climb, it will become …
Exogenous Progesterone And Progestins As Used In Estrous Synchrony Regimens Do Not Mimic The Corpus Luteum In Regulation Of Luteinizing Hormone And 17Β-Estradiol In Circulation Of Cows, N. Kojima, T. Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Our working hypothesis was that the low concentrations of progesterone (P4) and synthetic progestins administered in hormonal regimens to control estrous cycles of cows would have similar effects on secretion of LH and 17β-estradiol (E2). In addition, we hypothesized that concentrations of exogenous P4 typical of the midluteal phase of the estrous cycle and the corpus luteum (CL) would have similar effects on LH and E2, and the effects would be different from those of synthetic progestins and low concentrations of P4. Cows (n = 29) were randomly assigned to one …

Chloroplast Heteroplasmicity Is Stabilized By An Amber-Suppressor Tryptophan TrnaCua, Weizhu Yu, Robert J. Spreitzer
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Photosynthesis-deficient mutants of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were previously shown to arise from nonsense mutations within the chloroplast rbcL gene, which encodes the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39). Photosynthesiscompetent revertants of these nonsense mutants have often been found to be stably heteroplasmic, giving rise to both mutant and revertant cells during mitotic or meiotic divisions under nonselective growth conditions. It was proposed that the stable heteroplasmicity might arise from a balanced polymorphism of suppressor and wild-type alleles of a tRNA gene maintained within the polyploid chloroplast genome. In the present study, we have focused on determining the …

Lack Of Types 1 And 2a Protein Serine(P)/Threonine(P) Phosphatase Activities In Chloroplasts, Gongqin Sun, John Markwell
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Protein phosphatase activity in crude leaf extracts and in purified intact chloroplasts of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and pea (Pisum sativum) was analyzed using exogenously supplied phosphoproteins or endogenous thylakoid proteins. Leaf extracts contain readily detectable amounts of protein phosphatase activity measured with either phosphohistone or phosphorylase a, substrates of mammalian protein phosphatases. No significant chloroplast protein phosphatase activity was detected using these exogenous phosphoproteins. The dephosphorylation of endogenous thylakoid lightharvesting chlorophyll a/b binding proteins in situ was inhibited by fluoride, but not by microcystin-LR or okadaic acid, diagnostic inhibitors of mammalian types 1 and 2A protein …
Transition Metals In Legume Root Nodules: Iron-Dependent Free Radical Production Increases During Nodule Senescence, Manuel Becana, Robert V. Klucas
Transition Metals In Legume Root Nodules: Iron-Dependent Free Radical Production Increases During Nodule Senescence, Manuel Becana, Robert V. Klucas
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The cytosol from root nodules of soybean, bean, and cowpea contained Fe and Cu capable of catalyzing the formation of highly reactive free radicals. Specific and sensitive assays based on free radical-mediated DNA degradation revealed that most catalytic Fe and Cu were present as small chelates (300-600 Da). The involvement of catalytic Fe in free radical production during nodule senescence, which was induced by exposure of plants to continuous darkness for 2-4 days, was investigated. (i) Free heme remained at a constant and low concentration (1-4% of total nodule heme) during senescence, indicating that it is not an …
Spontaneous Tetraploid Melons, Perry E. Nugent, Dennis T. Ray
Spontaneous Tetraploid Melons, Perry E. Nugent, Dennis T. Ray
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Since 1968, three spontaneous 4x melons (Cucumis melo L.) plants were discovered in our field or greenhouse plantings. Two were found in the cultivar Planters Jumbo and one in the virescent marker C879-52. Each of these 4x plants had rounded cotyledons, shorter internodes, thicker stems and leaves, more hairs, and smaller fruits, with larger stem and blossom scars, than their 2x counterparts. Also, their flowers, pollen grains, stomates, and seeds were larger. The discovery of a 4x virescent plant in 1987 allows easier germplasm transfer between ploidy levels. Morphological characteristics of 2x and 4x melons will allow identification without …
Effects Of Weaning On Concentrations Of Inhibin In Follicular Fluid And Plasma Of Sows, W. E. Trout, J. H. Killen, R. K. Christenson, B. D. Schanbacher, J. J. Ford
Effects Of Weaning On Concentrations Of Inhibin In Follicular Fluid And Plasma Of Sows, W. E. Trout, J. H. Killen, R. K. Christenson, B. D. Schanbacher, J. J. Ford
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Changes in plasma and follicular fluid concentrations of inhibin were examined in sows after weaning at 28-32 days post partum. From 0 to 48 h after weaning, inhibin concentrations were 200-300times higher in follicular fluid from small ( < 4 mm) and medium-large( ≥4 mm) follicles than in ovarian venous plasma. Inhibin concentrations increased in follicular fluid from medium-large follicles at 24 and 48 h after weaning; concentrations in ovarian venous plasma were positively correlated with the number of medium-large follicles (r= 0·40)and with ovarian venous plasma concentrations of oestradiol (r= 0·61).Blood samples were collected for 30 days from sows (n=6) that exhibited oestrus within 5 days after weaning and from sows (n=5) that remained anoestrous for 11 days after weaning. Plasma inhibin concentrations rose in oestrous and anoestrous sows by 12 h and continued to rise for 60 h after weaning. Plasma inhibin concentrations rose further and were higher at 3·5-4·5days after weaning in oestrous sows than in sows that remained anoestrous. After oestrus, plasma inhibin concentrations declined. At weaning, plasma concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were higher in sows that subsequently exhibited oestrus than in sows that remained anoestrous. After weaning, plasma concentrations of FSH declined in both groups, reached a nadir at 2·5days, and increased gradually in anoestrous sows; oestrous sows exhibited an FSH surge at oestrus. Plasma FSH returned to preweaning concentrations in both groups of sows at Days 7-8.The results demonstrated dynamic changes in plasma concentrations of FSH and inhibin in sows after weaning; an inverse relationship of these, with the exception during the preovulatory surge of FSH, typifies the porcine oestrous cycle.

Science On The Great Plains: The History Of Physics And Astronomy At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
The year 1988 marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Physics at the University of Nebraska. While the year passed without fanfare in the department, DuaneJaecks, one of the members of the faculty, suggested to the author that it would be a good time to write a history of what is now the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He not only provided the initial impetus for the project, but has also given it his continual help and encouragement. While the initial plan was to write only a brief, informal departmental history, the project, like Topsy, grew. …

Parasitology As An Interpretive Tool In Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard
Parasitology As An Interpretive Tool In Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
Parasitological studies of archaeological sites can be used to interpret past behavior and living conditions. During the 1980s problem-oriented research into prehistoric- and historical-period parasitism developed and resulted in thefield of archaeoparasitology. Archaeoparasitology attempts to integrate parasite data into archaeological theory and interpretation. Within the last decade, four major archaeoparasitological laboratories emerged. They developed interpretive frameworks that apply parasitological data to a remarkable variety of prehistoric behaviors. Parasite remains can be used to reconstruct aspects of diet, health, and other behaviors such as transhumance and trade. Finally. analysis of the distribution of parasite remains can be used to interpret aspects …
Power Of Sign Surveys To Monitor Population Trends, Katherine C. Kendall, Lee H. Metzgar, David A. Patterson, Brian M. Steele
Power Of Sign Surveys To Monitor Population Trends, Katherine C. Kendall, Lee H. Metzgar, David A. Patterson, Brian M. Steele
United States National Park Service: Publications
The urgent need for an effective monitoring scheme for grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) populations led us to investigate the effort required to detect changes in populations of low-density dispersed animals, using sign (mainly scats and tracks) they leave on trails. We surveyed trails in Glacier National Park for bear tracks and scats during five consecutive years. Using these data, we modeled the occurrence of bear sign on trails, then estimated the power of various sampling schemes. Specifically, we explored the power of bear sign surveys to detect a 20% decline in sign occurrence. Realistic sampling schemes appear feasible …
Individual Identification And Sex Determination Of Whooping Cranes By Analysis Of Vocalizations, Glenn Carlson
Individual Identification And Sex Determination Of Whooping Cranes By Analysis Of Vocalizations, Glenn Carlson
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
I analyzed 3 temporal and 2 frequency features of whooping crane (Grus americana) guard calls from 4 locations to determine if vocalizations could be used as a means of sex determination and individual identification in this species. Wild birds were recorded at Grays Lake, Idaho, and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, and captive birds were recorded at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Maryland, and the International Crane Foundation, Wisconsin. Discriminant analysis provided an overall success rate of 98.8% in classifying individual calls to the appropriate sex of Whooping crane. This success rate is comparable to that of the current …

The Ecology Of Native Grassland Macroinvertebrates And Feeding Ecology Of Sandhill Cranes, Craig A. Davis, Paul A. Vohs
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
The ecology of native grassland macroinvertebrates along the Platte River in central Nebraska and their role in the feeding ecology of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) was examined on 3 native grasslands along the Platte River during late winter-early spring, 1989 and 1990. Four hundred forty-four soil samples from the study area were sorted for macroinvertebrates. Environmental factors such as soil moisture, water table depth, soil texture, and plant species composition were recorded from each soil collection site. Fifteen sandhill cranes, observed feeding for 40 minutes, were collected from 1 of the study areas. Maeroinvertebrates were collected from 4 …

Satellite Telemetry Reveals Winter Home Of Eurasian Crane From Northwestern Siberia, David H. Ellis, Yuri M. Markin, Charles H. Vermillion, Charles M. Hoisington, Alexander G. Sorokin, Grey W. Pendleton
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Satellite telemetry is a developing technology for the study of crane migration. A greater sandhill crane (Grus canadensis tabida) was tracked by satellite from Florida to Michigan in March 1989 (Nagendran 1992). This note reports the second attempt to use satellite telemetry to follow crane migration. In 1989 -90, tests of various harness and backpack designs for satellite telemetry transmitters (PTT's) with free-flying and confined sandhill cranes led to a 4-strap design (see Olsen et al. 1992) that was accepted for field testing. Through a cooperative effort between the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (USFWS) , International Crane Foundation, …
