Enhancing Biodiversity With And Within Agroforestry Plantings, Michele M. Schoeneberger Sep 1992

Enhancing Biodiversity With And Within Agroforestry Plantings, Michele M. Schoeneberger

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Agroforestry is the deliberate introduction of multipurpose woody perennials (MWPs) into agroecosystems for the purpose of enhancing agricultural productivity, natural resource conservation, and human environments. This introduction promotes the biodiversity within the agroecosystem and thus its sustainability. This biodiversity is only a fraction of its potential due to the limited number and arrangement of the MWPs currently used in agroforestry plantings. An expanded effort in nursery and agroforestry research and development along with nursery production of diverse, adapted MWPs will need to be pursued to fully capitalize on the varied economic and ecological benefits of agroforestry.

One-Trial Backward Excitatory Fear Conditioning Transfers Across Contexts, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres Sep 1992

One-Trial Backward Excitatory Fear Conditioning Transfers Across Contexts, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

One path to human phobia may be one-trial backward fear conditioning. Human phobias transfer readily across contexts. However, animal studies of one-trial backward fear conditioning have yet to demonstrate such transfer. The present study sought to do so. It used a lick-suppression procedure with 84 naive male albino rats. Two conditioning contexts, designated O and V, were crossed factorially with two test contexts, O and V. Within each cell of the factorial design, rats received in the conditioning context either a single 12 sec tone backward paired with a single 4 sec 1 mA shock or the same tone explicitly …

A Homolog Of Escherichia Coli Reca Protein In Plastids Of Higher Plants, H. Osman, P. Grandoni, Heriberto D. Cerutti, André Jagendorf

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Studies of chloroplast DNA variations, and several direct experimental observations, indicate the existence of recombination ability in algal and higher plant plastids. However, no studies have been done of the biochemical pathways involved. Using a part of a cyanobacterial recA gene as a probe in Southern blots, we have found homologous sequences in total DNA from Pisum sativum and Arabidopsis thaliana and in a cDNA library from Arabidopsis. A cDNA was cloned and sequenced, and its predicted amino acid sequence is 60.7% identical to that of the cyanobacterial RecA protein. This finding is consistent with our other results showing …

Book Review: Aquatic Insect Ecology: 1. Biology And Habitat By J. V. Ward, Ross H. Arnett Jr.

Insecta Mundi

A comprehensive treatment of the ecology of aquatic insects in one place is needed for both students and researchers. Professor Ward is doing this in two volumes. The first volume covers the biology and habitats, as indicated in the subtitle, of the 13 insect orders that are either entirely aquatic at some stage, or those with some members aquatic at some stage. The second volume will be devoted entirely to the feeding ecology of these aquatic species.

Variation In The Terminalia Of Neohermes Concolor With A Key To Males Of Neohermes In Eastern North America (Megaloptera: Corydalidae: Chauliodinae), David E. Bowles, Michael A. Mathis

Insecta Mundi

Males of Neohermes concolor (Davis) from the interior highlands of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, and from Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky exhibited considerable variation in male terminalia. Differences occurred in the size of the dorsal membrane of the ninth sternite and in the shape of the tenth tergite (anal plate) which varied from rounded to truncate-shaped. This observed variation does not appear to be geographically correlated. Females of N. concolor did not exhibit broad variation in terminalii. Little variation was observed among males of N. angusticollis (Hagen) and N. matheri Flint. The broad range of variation observed in the tenninalia of …

Rice Insects: The Role Of Host Plant Resistance In Integrated Management Systems, E. A. Heinrichs Sep 1992

Rice Insects: The Role Of Host Plant Resistance In Integrated Management Systems, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Insects are among the most important abiotic and biotic constraints to rice production. National rice research programs are in various stages in the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) stratagies for rice insect control. Among the various control tactics, insect resistant cultivars are sought as the major tactic in rice IPM. Through the activities of interdisciplinary teams of scientists significant progress has been made in the development and release of insect resistant cultivars to farmers. Because of its compatibility with other control tactics insect resistance has proven to fit well into the IPM approach to rice insect control …

Population Estimates Of Kea In Arthur's Pass National Park, Alan B. Bond, Judy Diamond

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The population dynamics of a local group of Kea (Nestor notabilis) was studied at a refuse dump in Arthur's Pass National Park over the course of three successive summers. The mean number of buds that foraged at the dump during the summer was estimated as 20 juveniles, 10 subadults, and 36 adults. An average of 11% of these birds were females. The number of adults was quite stable across years. The total population of Kea in this area was estimated to be between 88 and 119, or in the order of 0.018 to 0.040 buds per hectare. Mortality …

Aggressive Motivation In The Midas Cichlid: Evidence For Behavioral Efference, Alan B. Bond Sep 1992

Aggressive Motivation In The Midas Cichlid: Evidence For Behavioral Efference, Alan B. Bond

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Behavioral Efference is a hypothetical positive feedback from the performance of an aggressive display that augments the level of aggressive motivation. The hypothesis was proposed (Bond, 1989) to account for the occurrence of truthful communication during aggressive encounters, even in the face of a presumed selective pressure in favor of deceit (Maynard Smith, 1984). Evidence of Behavioral Efference was sought in an experimental study of adult Midas cichlids Cichlasoma citrinellum, in which subjects responded aggressively to varying sizes of dummy fish. Before and after each aggression trial, the level of aggressive motivation was estimated from the intensity of the subject’s …

Landscape Ecology Of Hedgerows And Fencerows In Panama Township, Lancaster County, Nebraska, Richard K. Sutton

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study investigated woody plant composition, structure, and biomass of hedgerows and fencerows, and for effects between human attitudes and managemnet practices. Fencerows arise as narrow strips of woody and herbaceous plants at feild margins and property boundaries. Hedgerows grow from intentional linear plantings. Exotic species wer more important in fencerow composition. Hackberry, Missouri goosberry, American plum, and white mulberry readily inhabited both fencerows and hedgerows. Woody plant exhibited clumped distribution in both hedgerows and fencerows. A moisture gradient emerged as a factor in distribution of species. Management caused a significant difference in speicies richness and biomass in both hedgerows …

Identification And Characterization Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency-Like Virus Tat Gene, Zhen-Qian Liu, Deborah Sheridan, Charles Wood Aug 1992

Identification And Characterization Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency-Like Virus Tat Gene, Zhen-Qian Liu, Deborah Sheridan, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

A cDNA clone of the bovine immunodeficiency-like virus (BW) trans-activator gene (tat) was identified and characterized. The tat cDNA clone was generated by splicing, and on the basis of sequence analysis, the Tat protein was found to be encoded entirely by the first exon. It is 103 amino acids in size and shares sequence homology with the human immunodeficiency virus (HW) Tat. The BIV tat clone can trans activate the BIV promoter effectively, as measured by the expression of the bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene, when transfected into bovine cells. Besides activating the BIV promoter, the BIV Tat can also trans …

An Evaluation Of The Endocrine Response To Dystocia In The Primiparous Cow And Calf, Glenda M. Borcher Aug 1992

An Evaluation Of The Endocrine Response To Dystocia In The Primiparous Cow And Calf, Glenda M. Borcher

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Parturition is a very stressful event for both the cow and the calf. Endocrine changes occur which typically enable to calf to make the transition from a uterine to a gaseous environment. These endocrine changes are basic stress responses, necessary for an organism to maintain homeostasis. They include surges in catecholamine and cortisol secretion and changes in T3 secretion in response to temperature changes. It is well established that the stress response, if

prolonged, can become detrimental. Prolonged stress can result in muscle wasting, immune impairment and gastrointestinal ulceration. If parturition is delayed or particularly stressful due to environmental factors …
