G93-1182 Best Management Practices For Agricultural Pesticides To Protect Water Resources, Robert J. Wright, J. F. Witkowski, Larry D. Schulze Jan 1993

G93-1182 Best Management Practices For Agricultural Pesticides To Protect Water Resources, Robert J. Wright, J. F. Witkowski, Larry D. Schulze

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses what happens to pesticides after application, factors affecting pesticide movement, and best management practices to minimize the potential for pesticide contamination of ground and surface water.

Users of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals must take appropriate precautions to reduce the risks of moving these materials into ground or surface water. The primary consideration should be whether the chemical is needed. If pesticides are needed, then the characteristics of the chemical, the sensitivity of the application site and the method of application should be considered.

13.3.14. Detrital Accumulation And Processing In Wetlands, Patrick A. Magee Jan 1993

13.3.14. Detrital Accumulation And Processing In Wetlands, Patrick A. Magee

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems on earth (Fig. 1) and are often characterized by lush growths of hydrophytes. However, direct consumption of wetland plants by animals is relatively low, and, therefore, much of the biomass and energy assimilated by hydrophytes becomes detritus or senesced plant litter. Nutrients released by detritus into the water and soil are assimilated by microorganisms, algae, plants, and small aquatic animals. Through this process, energy is transferred from detritus to other biotic components of a wetland. Plant litter ultimately decomposes.

Litter processing is regulated by environmental factors, microbial activity, the presence and abundance of …

13.1.11. Life History Traits And Habitat Needs Of The Redhead, Christine Mitchell Custer Jan 1993

13.1.11. Life History Traits And Habitat Needs Of The Redhead, Christine Mitchell Custer

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Redheads are one of five common diving duck species in North America. They are in the same taxonomic group as the pochards or bay ducks and are most similar in appearance and behavior to the canvasback. Smaller body size, late breeding, wintering in southern areas, and tolerance to salt in winter and in breeding areas differentiate the redhead from the canvasback and suggest an evolutionary origin in the arid areas of the West. Parasitism of other waterfowl nests is more pronounced in redheads than in other North American waterfowl. These and other aspects of the biology of the redhead are …

13.1.15. Life History And Habitat Needs Of The Black Brant, Dirk V. Derksen, David H. Ward

Waterfowl Management Handbook

The black brant is a sea goose that depends on coastal habitats from high arctic nesting sites in Canada, Alaska, and Russia to wintering areas in the Pacific coastal states, the Baja California peninsula, and mainland Mexico estuaries. Population estimates are based on aerial surveys in Mexico, California, Oregon, and Washington during mid-winter. Despite much annual variability in estimates, a plot of the counts from 1964 to 1992 reveals a significant downward trend in the winter populations (Fig. 1). Three of four major colonies on the Yukon&#;Kuskokwim (Y&#;K) delta declined an average of 60% during the first half of the …

Property Modification Of Edible Wheat, Gluten-Based Films, A. Gennadios, Curtis L. Weller, R. F. Testin Jan 1993

Property Modification Of Edible Wheat, Gluten-Based Films, A. Gennadios, Curtis L. Weller, R. F. Testin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Procedures were developed to produce edible wheat, gluten-based films. A film was produced as a standard. Five additional films were then produced by modifying the initial film-forming solution. Modifications included changing the plasticizer, partially substituting wheat gluten with soy protein isolate and corn zein, and incorporating two acetylated monoglyceride products. All films were characterized by measuring selected mechanical properties, and permeabilities to water vapor and to oxygen. Comparison of the films, in terms of their measured properties, indicates ways to improve the overall performance of the standard film as a potential packaging material. A main limitation of all of the …

Wounded Knee • South Dakota Jan 1993

Wounded Knee • South Dakota

United States National Park Service: Publications

This Study of Alternatives and Environmental Assessment considers three alternatives to commemorate the tragedy that took place at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, on December 29, 1890. Each of these alternatives would acknowledge the massacre, memorialize the Lakota victims, and interpret the significance of the site. In accordance with National Park Service (NPS) policies, and to reflect the full range of alternatives mentioned by the public, a no-action alternative has also been considered. Under this alternative existing conditions at the Wounded Knee site would be continued, and a national memorial or park would not be established.

Preparation Of Functionalized Polymers Utilizng A Soluble Highly Reactive Form Of Calcium, Reuben D. Rieke

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Calcium-substituted polymeric reagents are provided. These reagents can be prepared via the oxidative addition of a soluble highly reactive calcium species to organic and inorganic polymers containing alkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl pendent groups substituted with halide atoms, cyanide molecules, 1,3-dienes, or any conjugated poly unsaturated system. Preferably, the polymer is a cross linked p-bromopolystyrene, p-chloropolystyrene, p fluoropolystyrene, or chloromethylated polystyrene. Preferably, the soluble highly reactive calcium species is prepared from the reduction of Ca(II) salts with an alkali metal arene, such as lithium biphenylide. These calcium-substituted polymeric reagents react with a variety of electrophiles to yield functionalized polymers. Reaction with …

Effect Of Immunization Against Lhrh On Isoforms Of Lh In The Ovine Pituitary, D. D. Zalesky, B. D. Schanbacher, H. E. Grotjan

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The role of LHRH in modulating intrapituitary LH content as well as the distribution of LH among its isoforms was examined in sheep. Rams (n = 3) and wethers (n = 6) were actively immunized against an LHRH-humanserum globulin conjugate. Pituitaries collected from these animals plus pituitaries from corresponding numbers of nonimmunized rams and wethers were extracted with a buffered saline solution containing protease inhibitors. Immunization markedly reduced total amounts of immunoreactive LH in the pituitary. An aliquot of each pituitary extract was desalted by flow dialysis against water and chromatofocused on a pH 10.5-7.0 gradient. Concentrations of LH in …

Estimates Of Variances Due To Direct And Maternal Effects For Growth Traits Of Romanov Sheep, G. A. Maria, K. G. Boldman, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records of growth traits of 2,086 Romanov lambs were used to estimate variance components for an animal model and genetic correlations between growth traits. Traits analyzed were birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WW), 90-d weight (W90), and daily gain for the periods birth to weaning (DG1) and weaning to 90 d (DG2). Weaning was at approximately 40 d. Variance components were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood with an animal model including fixed effects for year x season, sex, rearing type, and litter size and random effects for the direct genetic effect of the animal (with relative variance h2), …

Economical And Biological Efficiencies Of Beef Cattle Differing In Level Of Milk Production, M. Van Oijen, M. Montano-Bermudez, Merlyn K. Nielsen Jan 1993

Economical And Biological Efficiencies Of Beef Cattle Differing In Level Of Milk Production, M. Van Oijen, M. Montano-Bermudez, Merlyn K. Nielsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Economical and biological efficiencies of beef production to weaning and to slaughter were estimated in three groups, different in milk available (low, medium, and high) to the calves but with the same potential for growth. Data from different breed groups of cows (low [L] = Hereford x Angus, medium [M] = Red Poll x Angus, and high [H] = Milking Shorthorn x Angus) were used. Economical efficiency was the ratio of income to expenses and biological efficiency was the ratio of calf weight to total feed energy required. Income was derived from cull cows and calves at weaning or carcasses …

Sequencing Two Dna Templates In Five Channels By Digital Compression, Michaela Nelson, Yanping Zhang, David L. Steffens, Reingard Grabherr, James L. Van Etten Jan 1993

Sequencing Two Dna Templates In Five Channels By Digital Compression, Michaela Nelson, Yanping Zhang, David L. Steffens, Reingard Grabherr, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

By applying algebraic coding methods to the Sanger dideoxynucleotide procedure, DNA sequences of two templates can be determined simultaneousl in only flve reactions and data channels. A 5:2 data compression is accomplished by instantaneous source coding of nucleotide sequence pairs into one set of 5-bit block codes. A general algebraic expression, 2" - 1 ≥ 4f, describes conditions under which f DNA templates can be sequenced using n channels. Such compression sequencing is accurate and effcient, as demonstrated by manual 35S autoradiographic detection and automated on-line analysis using fluorescent-labeled primers. Symmetric 5:2 compression is especially useful when …

Mitochondrial Dna Sequence Divergence Among Meloidogyne Incognita, Romanomermis Culicivorax, Ascaris Suum, And Caenorhabditis Elegans, Thomas O. Powers, T. S. Harris, B. C. Hyman Jan 1993

Mitochondrial Dna Sequence Divergence Among Meloidogyne Incognita, Romanomermis Culicivorax, Ascaris Suum, And Caenorhabditis Elegans, Thomas O. Powers, T. S. Harris, B. C. Hyman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial DNA sequences were obtained from the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 (ND3), large rRNA, and cytochrome b genes from Meloidogyne incognita and Romanomermis culicivorax. Both species show considerable genetic distance within these same genes when compared with Caenorhabditis elegans or Ascaris suum, two species previously analyzed. Caenorhabditis, Ascaris, and Meloidogyne were selected as representatives of three subclasses in the nematode class Secernentea: Rhabditia, Spiruria, and Diplogasteria, respectively. Romanomermis served as a representative outgroup of the class Adenophorea. The divergence between the phytoparasitic lineage (represented by Meloidogyne) and the three other species is so great that virtually …

Future Developments In Artificial Insemination Technology, Murray R. Bakst Jan 1993

Future Developments In Artificial Insemination Technology, Murray R. Bakst

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The development of artificial insemination (AI) technology over the past decade has resulted in some significant advances in poultry breeding.  However, because there are few poultry scientists performing fundamental research to advance AI technology, alternative approaches must be examined in an effort to expand AI technology.  This paper suggests that the technology available for cell and tissue culture propagation should be evaluated and the applicability of this technology to poultry AI technology assessed.  Instrumentation and clinical testing procedures used for the evaluation of somatic cells in culture could provide objective data before and after semen storage on large numbers of …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Tropical sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass are known to be efficient scavengers of soil nitrogen and are important forage crops in the U.S. Nitrate contamination of groundwater due to disposal of organic wastes and excessive fertilization is a major concern in the Central Great Plains. A common disposal method of municipal wastes is application to fallow cropland. Quantification of the developmental morphology of tropical sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass is important to developing management strategies that allow multiple applications of organic wastes to optimize nitrogen removal and dry matter production. The objective of this study was to quantify the developmental …

Stem and petiole samples from susceptible and tolerant cultivars (Russet Burbank and Belrus, respectively), inoculated with 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.2) or 102 or 109 cfu of either an aggressive or a less aggressive C. m. sepedonicus strain, were processed by directly blotting cut tissue sections on nylon membranes, macerating frozen tissues, and applying xylem fluid collected by centrifugation to nylon membranes (stems only). The efficiency of detection …

A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center Jan 1993

A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center

Nebraska Forest Service: Publications

Trees growing within cities and towns form a forest-an urban forest. But urban trees require special attention, because they are expected to exist within the urban environment. With its infrastructure of streets, sidewalks, curbs, buried utilities, overhead power lines and buildings, the urban environment places tremendous stresses on trees. With proper care, trees become assets which grow in value over time. Without care, tree value declines, eventually becoming a liability to the community. The Technical Guide to Urban Forestry was produced to help communities develop, manage and protect their urban forest resources. The purpose of this publication is to provide …

Global Snow Cover Monitoring: An Update, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard R. Heim Jr. Jan 1993

Global Snow Cover Monitoring: An Update, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard R. Heim Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Accurate monitoring of the large-scale dimensions of global snow cover is essential for understanding details of climate dynamics and climate change. Presently, such information is gathered individually from ground station networks and satellite platforms. Efforts are in progress to consolidate and analyze long-term station records from a number of countries. To gain truly global coverage, however, satellite-based monitoring techniques must be employed. A 27-year record of Northern Hemisphere continental snow cover produced by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the longest such environmental record available. Records of Southern Hemisphere continental cover and snow on top of …

An Investigation Of Trace Element Contamination At Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr. Jan 1993

An Investigation Of Trace Element Contamination At Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge (Bamforth) located in southeast
Wyoming serves as an important resting area for several species of migratory
waterbirds. Surveys were conducted in the summer months of 1992 to
determine bird use at Bamforth. Sediment, water, and biota were collected
from Bamforth to identify wetlands with potential contaminant problems that
may be affecting migratory waterbirds. Mercury and lead in water samples
were above criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Selenium levels in
vegetation and sediment were elevated above concentrations documented to
bioaccumulate and cause adverse reproductive effects in waterfowl. Selenium
levels in waterbird eggs were slightly greater …

“Introduction” To Developmental Perspectives On Motivation, Janis Jacobs

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This volume marks the 40th anniversary of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, and with it a renewed commitment to the Symposium's original focus on motivation. Although we may reemphasize the topic, it is clear that motivation, as an area of study, has changed dramatically over the past 40 years. Although motivation has remained an important theme, it has had to share the stage with other important topics as the field of psychology has expanded. In addition, the concept of motivation has been applied to many diverse areas, has been defined and measured in a variety of ways, and has been …
