Alpha Interferon-Induced Antiretroviral Activities: Restriction Of Viral Nucleic Acid Synthesis And Progeny Virion Production In Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Infected Monocytes, Lisa Baca-Regen, Nina Heinzinger, Mario Stevenson, Howard Gendelman Nov 1994

Alpha Interferon-Induced Antiretroviral Activities: Restriction Of Viral Nucleic Acid Synthesis And Progeny Virion Production In Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Infected Monocytes, Lisa Baca-Regen, Nina Heinzinger, Mario Stevenson, Howard Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Alpha interferon (IFN-a) restricts multiple steps of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-i) life cycle. A well-described effect of IFN-a is in the modulation of viral nucleic acid synthesis. We demonstrate that IFN-α influences HIV-1 DNA synthesis principally by reducing the production of late products of reverse transcription. The magnitude of IFN-α-induced downregulation of HIV-1 DNA and/or progeny virion production was dependent on the IFN-α concentration, the duration of cytokine administration, the multiplicity of infection, the viral strain, and the cycles of viral infection. Interestingly, reductions in viral DNAs could not fully account for the observed IFN-a-induced abrogation of …

A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez Nov 1994

A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A novel PCR technique used to amplify Euplotes crassus macronuclear chromosomes was developed to provide scientific proof that an Euplotes crassus 1.0 kb gene is not genetically related to an Oxytricha nova 1.8 kb β-telomere protein gene. Theories and experimental procedures associated with the development of this PCR technique were the product of research that will have a profound impact on future studies of telomere protein genes and telomeric DNA in a multitude of eukaryotic cells. The hypothesis that a β-telomere protein does not exist in Euplotes crassus was supported by the result of this study.

Expression of the recombinant …

Development Of Semi-Intensive Aquaculture Technologies In Honduras: Summary Of Freshwater Aquacultural Research Conducted From 1983-1992, Bartholomew Green, David Teichert-Coddington, Terrill Hanson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Aquacultural research has been conducted collaboratively in Honduras since 1983 by the International Center for Aquaculture and Aquatic Environments, Auburn University, and the Direccion General de Pesca y Acuicultura, Secretaria de Recursos Naturales. This research was carried out at the El Carao National Fish Culture Research Center, Comayagua, Honduras, under the auspices of the USAID-financed Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Program (PD/A CRSP). The goal of the PD/A CRSP is to increase tilapia yields by optimizing resource use in systems based predominantly on natural pond productivity.

Bioarchaeology And Cod Fisheries: A New Source Of Evidence, Thomas Amorosi, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Archaeological excavations in the North Atlantic basin over the past two decades have recovered large amounts of fishbones from datable deposits extending back over 8000 years in some areas. Coverage of the last 1000 years (with particular emphasis on the climatic cooling of the “Little Ice Age”) is increasingly complete. Recent research makes it possible to reconstruct live lengths from commonly recovered fishbone elements. Preliminary findings indicate that cod of 1 to 1.5 m were being regularly taken in the eleventh to nineteenth centuries throughout the North Atlantic. Changes in fish size and mix of species taken probably reflect technological …

Comparison Of Disulfide Contents And Solubility At Alkaline Ph Of Insecticidal And Noninsecticidal Bacillus Thuringiensis Protein Crystals, Cheng Du, Phyllis A.W. Martin, Kenneth W. Nickerson Oct 1994

Comparison Of Disulfide Contents And Solubility At Alkaline Ph Of Insecticidal And Noninsecticidal Bacillus Thuringiensis Protein Crystals, Cheng Du, Phyllis A.W. Martin, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

We compared two insecticidal and eight noninsecticidal soil isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis with regard to the solubility of their proteinaceous crystals at alkaline pH values. The protein disulfide contents of the insecticidal and noninsecticidal crystals were equivalent. However, six of the noninsecticidal crystals were soluble only at pH values of ≥12. This lack of solubility contributed to their lack of toxicity. One crystal type which was soluble only at pH ≥12 (strain SHP 1-12) did exhibit significant toxicity to tobacco hornworm larvae when the crystals were presolubilized. In contrast, freshly prepared crystals from the highly insecticidal strain HD-1 were solubilized …

Escherbothrium Molinae N. Gen. Et N. Sp. (Eucestoda: Tetraphyllidea: Triloculariidae) In Urotrygon Chilensis (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatiformes: Urolophidae) From The Gulf Of Nicoya, Costa Rica, Reva Berman, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cestodes collected in spiral valves of the stingray Urotrygon chilensis from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica represent an undescribed species of Tetraphyllidea. By possessing more than 2 loculi as well as an apical sucker on each bothridium, the new species is diagnosably distinct from all other tetraphyllidean genera; therefore, a new genus is proposed for it. The new species also possesses globular structures irregularly arranged on the surface of the bothridia. We found similar structures on the bothridial faces of Trilocularia acanthiaevulgaris, possibly indicating phylogenetic relationships with the new species. This possibility is enhanced by the observation that …

Consulting With Teachers About Girls And Boys, Susan M. Sheridan, Mary Henning-Stout

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to clarify issues of gender relevant to the practice of consultation with classroom teachers. Social psychological and educational considerations are reviewed as grounding for gender-fair educational practices which consultation can help to bring about. Finally, the specific implications of this theoretical and empirical grounding for the practice of organizational, behavioral, and mental health consultation are explored.

Bobcats, Dallas Virchow, Denny Hogeland Sep 1994

Bobcats, Dallas Virchow, Denny Hogeland

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

The bobcat (Lynx rufus), alias “wildcat,” is a medium-sized member of the North American cat family. It can be distinguished at a distance by its graceful catlike movements, short “bobbed” tail, and round face and pointed ears. Visible at close distances are black hair at the tip of the tail and prominent white dots on the upper side of the ears. Body hair color varies, but the animal’s sides and flanks are usually brownish black or reddish brown with either distinct or faint black spots. The back is commonly brownish yellow with a dark line down the middle. …

Coyotes, Jeffrey S. Green Sep 1994

Coyotes, Jeffrey S. Green

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

In body form and size, the coyote (Canis latrans) resembles a small collie dog, with erect pointed ears, slender muzzle, and a bushy tail. Coyotes are predominantly brownish gray in color with a light gray to cream-colored belly. Color varies greatly, however, from nearly black to red or nearly white in some individuals and local populations. Most have dark or black guard hairs over their back and tail. Coyote-dog and coyote-wolf hybrids exist in some areas and may vary greatly from typical coyotes in size, color, and appearance. Coyotes often include many items in their diet. Rabbits top the list …

Feral Dogs, Jeffrey S. Green, Philip S. Gipson Sep 1994

Feral Dogs, Jeffrey S. Green, Philip S. Gipson

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

Feral dog, Canis familiaris. The primary feature that distinguishes feral from domestic dogs is the degree of reliance or dependence on humans, and in some respect, their behavior toward people. Feral dogs survive and reproduce independently of human intervention or assistance. While it is true that some feral dogs use human garbage for food, others acquire their primary subsistence by hunting and scavenging like other wild canids. Feral and domestic dogs often differ markedly in their behavior toward people. Feral dogs are usually secretive and wary of people. Thus, they are active during dawn, dusk, and at night much …

Mink, Edward K. Boggess Sep 1994

Mink, Edward K. Boggess

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

The mink (Mustela vison) is a member of the weasel family. Both sexes are a rich chocolate-brown color, usually with a white patch on the chest or chin and scattered white patches on the belly. The fur is relatively short with the coat consisting of a soft, dense underfur concealed by glossy, lustrous guard hairs. Mink also have anal musk glands common to the weasel family and can discharge a disagreeable musk if frightened or disturbed. Unlike skunks, however, they cannot forcibly spray musk. Mink are shoreline dwellers and their one basic habitat requirement is a suitable permanent …

Beguiled By Birds: A Profile Of Paul Johnsgard, James L. Hayward, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

“I spent the first thirty years of my life learning to be a scientist, and the next twenty-five years of my life trying to become a humanist and an artist." Paul Johnsgard immerses himself in several worlds, but for the eclectic teacher, writer, artist, and scientist, these worlds merge in a burst of feathered movement, color, and shape. Johnsgard is beguiled by birds. As a professor of biological sciences at the University of Nebraska with full teaching responsibilities, Johnsgard has managed to write at least one or two books on birds each year. In 1986 I asked him if he …
