S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program Jan 2000

S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Over a third of nonresidents who visit Nebraska in the summer months go to attractions and events. For each attraction or event visited, they spend an average of a halfday longer stay in Nebraska and spend an additional $64, according to data from Nebraska's OED. Outdoor recreation will likely continue to increase with active families, climbing incomes, and shorter work weeks. However, Nebraskans may spend more on long weekends and vacations closer to home in coming years if fuel prices keep climbing. If Nebraska is to meet existing and expected recreation and tourism demands, the long-range statewide forecasts to meet …

Waste Assessment Of Agricultural Chemicals, Petroleum Products And Maintenance Residuals On Farmsteads, Sherman D. Reed, Robert D. Grisso, Wayne E. Woldt, Shirley M. Niemeyer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to evaluate waste management practices of purchasing, handling, storage, and disposal of agricultural chemicals, petroleum products, and maintenance residuals. One-hundred surveys were returned by agricultural producers from three Nebraska counties selected based on unique environmental and waste management issues. Twenty-four questions concerning agricultural chemicals and 16 questions directed to petroleum products and maintenance residuals are discussed. A follow-up interview with 45 respondents was conducted “on-site” to gain insight into their reported practices, perceptions, and actual practices. Most farmers (66%) tended to purchase pesticides in 3.8 to 10 L (1-2.5 gal) containers and most (79%) …

Influence Of Corn Phenology On Adult Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Distribution, Stephanie J. Darnell, Lance J. Meinke, Linda J. Young Jan 2000

Influence Of Corn Phenology On Adult Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Distribution, Stephanie J. Darnell, Lance J. Meinke, Linda J. Young

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Field studies were designed to more clearly determine how adult western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, population distribution patterns are altered over time by changes and contrasts in corn (Zea mays L.) plant phenology using whole-plant beetle counts as the sampling tool. In 1994, studies were conducted in a model system consisting of a late-planted corn strip placed in the middle of an early-planted cornfield. The system was replicated over three fields. Large-scale variation was modeled using trend-surface regression analysis to describe the relationship between beetle counts and distance from the center of the late-planted strip. In each …

Polymorphic Microsatellite Loci From The Lettuce Root Aphid, Pemphigus Bursarius, Nicholas Miller, A. J. Birley, G. M. Tatchell

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Pemphigus bursarius is an occasional pest of agriculture with an annual life cycle that alternates between sexual reproduction on black poplars (Populus nigra) and parthenogenetic reproduction on the root systems of various Compositae, including lettuce. In general, aphids exhibit low allozyme variability (e.g. Tomiuk & Wöhrmann 1980), possibly as a consequence of the response of parthenogenetic lineages to natural selection (Hales et al. 1997). Microsatellite loci are typically more variable than allozymes (Tautz 1989) and are likely to provide a more informative system for the study of aphid populations.

Response Of Captive Coyotes To Renardine Coyote Repellent, D. E. Zemlicka, J. R. Mason Jan 2000

Response Of Captive Coyotes To Renardine Coyote Repellent, D. E. Zemlicka, J. R. Mason

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Renardine is a bone tar product available for use as a coyote (Canis latrans) repellent in Canada. The substance is applied to pasture borders to prevent coyotes from entering and attacking sheep. Because data regarding the effectiveness of Renardine are lacking, we designed two experiments. In the first, six pairs of coyotes were first presented with 400 g of ground meat in two pans (200 g/pan) with false screen bottoms. Beneath the screens were absorbent tubes wetted with 10 ml of distilled water. Subsequently, during a treatment period, the absorbent tube was wetted with 10 ml of Renardine. …

Detection Of Parasitised Fly Puparia Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Floyd E. Dowell, Alberto B. Broce, Feng Xie, James E. Throne, James E. Baker Jan 2000

Detection Of Parasitised Fly Puparia Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Floyd E. Dowell, Alberto B. Broce, Feng Xie, James E. Throne, James E. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to identify house fly (Musca domestica L.) puparia that contained viable parasitoids. Results derived from a partial least squares analysis of NIR spectra showed that about 80–90% of puparia containing parasitoids could be identified correctly. Difference spectra and beta coefficients indicated that absorption differences between parasitised and unparasitised puparia may have been due to moisture content and/or differences in composition of chitin or lipid components. Detection of viable hymenopterous parasitoids within puparia could assist commercial insectaries in delivering known quantities of parasitised puparia for biological control of house flies and other filth flies …

Transgenic Avidin Maize Is Resistant To Storage Insect Pests, Karl J. Kramer, Thomas D. Morgan, James E. Throne, Floyd E. Dowell, Michele Bailey, John A. Howard Jan 2000

Transgenic Avidin Maize Is Resistant To Storage Insect Pests, Karl J. Kramer, Thomas D. Morgan, James E. Throne, Floyd E. Dowell, Michele Bailey, John A. Howard

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Avidin is a glycoprotein found in chicken egg white, that sequesters the vitamin biotin. Here we show that when present in maize at levels of ≥100 p.p.m., avidin is toxic to and prevents development of insects that damage grains during storage. Insect toxicity is caused by a biotin deficiency, as shown by prevention of toxicity with biotin supplementation. The avidin maize is not, however, toxic to mice when administered as the sole component of their diet for 21 days. These data suggest that avidin expression in food or feed grain crops can be used as a biopesticide against a spectrum …

Feeding Fitness And Quality Of Domesticated And Feral Predators: Effects Of Long-Term Rearing On Artificial Diet, Allen Carson Cohen Jan 2000

Feeding Fitness And Quality Of Domesticated And Feral Predators: Effects Of Long-Term Rearing On Artificial Diet, Allen Carson Cohen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Predatory geocorids, Geocoris punctipes Say (Geocoridae: Hemiptera), that had been reared (domesticated) for over 6 years (60 continuous generations) on an artificial diet were compared with feral (F1) counterparts to determine possible domestication-associated losses in predatory capabilities. Using adult female predators provided with either tobacco budworm larvae, Heliothis uirescens F., or pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, as prey, I measured predator weights, handling time with a single prey, amount extracted, consumption rate, and feeding (gut) capacity. Domesticated females were significantly smaller than ferals, weighing 4.53 mg versus 5.09 mg, respectively. Domestication did not significantly influence handling times, which averaged 131 …

Elongated Chambers For Field Studies Across Atmospheric Co2 Gradients, H. B. Johnson, H. W. Polley, R. P. Whitis Jan 2000

Elongated Chambers For Field Studies Across Atmospheric Co2 Gradients, H. B. Johnson, H. W. Polley, R. P. Whitis

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We describe a field facility that controls CO2 along continuous gradients from superambient to subambient concentrations. The facility consists of two transparent, tunnel-shaped chambers, each 1-m wide and tall and 60-m long. Pure CO2 is injected into one chamber during daylight to initiate a superambient CO2 gradient (550–350 µmol mol–1). Ambient air is introduced to the second chamber to initiate a subambient CO2 gradient (350–200 µmol mol–1). CO2 concentrations at night are regulated at 150 µmol mol–1 above daytime values along each gradient. The CO2 gradients are maintained by …

A Checklist And Distribution Maps Of The Amphibians And Reptiles Of South Dakota, Royce E. Ballinger, Justin W. Meeker, Marcus Thies Jan 2000

A Checklist And Distribution Maps Of The Amphibians And Reptiles Of South Dakota, Royce E. Ballinger, Justin W. Meeker, Marcus Thies

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Fourteen species of amphibians and 30 species of reptiles are documented from South Dakota, based on the examination of 7,361 museum specimen records. No species of the herpetofauna is endemic to the state, which contains a mixture of species from especially the southern and western regions of the United States. Four amphibians (Ambystoma tigrinum, Bufo cognatus, Pseudacris triseriata, and Rana pipiens) and three reptiles (Chrysemys picta, Heterodon nasicus, and Thamnophis radix) occur statewide in appropriate habitats. Three amphibians and 11 reptiles reach their northern distributional limits in the state, and two amphibians …

Extralimital Records Of The Mexican Free-Tailed Bat (Tadarida Brasiliensis Mexicana) In The Central United States And Their Biological Significance, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman, Carey Grell

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Two new records of Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana are reported from Nebraska. The literature records of this taxon from the central United States are summarized. In this region of North America, these bats occupy a "natal range" where the species carries on regular reproductive activities and the populations are relatively stable, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. To the north of the natal range of T. b. mexicana is a "pioneering zone" where, under favorable conditions, the species is capable of reproducing and conducting its normal activities. The pioneering zone of the Mexican free-tailed bat includes Barber and Comanche …

Mitochondrial-Dna Variation Within And Among Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) Subspecies, Allen L. Szalanski, Kevin E. Church, David W. Oates, Richard Bischof, Thomas O. Powers

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Genetic variation within and among wild Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, subspecies was measured using DNA sequencing and PCR-RFLP analysis of a 655 bp portion of the mtDNA D-loop region. DNA sequencing from 25 individual Eastern, Merriam, Rio Grande and domestic Turkeys revealed 16 polymorphic sites. Parsimony and neighbor-joining analysis did not show support for the four wild Turkey subspecies studied. PCR-RFLP analysis of 118 individuals revealed 13 distinct haplotypes. Haplotype variation was detected in all wild Turkey populations, and Wright's F-statistics revealed pronounced differentiation (FST = 0.302) among populations. Based on these data, non-native wild Turkey populations do not …

A Floristic Study And Species Checklist For The Republican River Valley In Nebraska, With Emphasis On Plants Of Concern For Conservation, Steven J. Rothenberger Jan 2000

A Floristic Study And Species Checklist For The Republican River Valley In Nebraska, With Emphasis On Plants Of Concern For Conservation, Steven J. Rothenberger

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A botanical survey of the Republican River Valley in Nebraska was initiated during the 1995 growing season and continued through 1998. A major objective of this study was to discover and tabulate rare plants (as designated by the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program), but a general floristic study was also completed. Natural areas, selected because of species composition or location, were identified and described. The study area is characterized by a high degree of human disturbance. Most county floras, with the exception of Webster, are poorly represented. Seven species of conservation concern are reported, which is 1.4% of the total collected …

Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman Jan 2000

Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

New distributional records are presented for 20 species of mammals in Nebraska. The majority of these records appear to represent changes in geographic distribution rather than just better sampling in poorly known areas. One group of mammals, including the opossum, northern myotis, evening bat, red bat, woodchuck, white-footed mouse, and gray fox, is expanding westward, probably in response to increasing woodlands along river systems. Another group, including the meadow vole, masked shrew, and least weasel, is expanding southward, possibly in response to new prey species and changing microclimates. The eastern woodrat appears to be expanding northward in eastern Nebraska. The …

Effects Of Age And Group Size On Habitat Selection And Activity Level In Xenopus Laevis Tadpoles, Danielle R. Golden, Geoffrey R. Smith, Jessica E. Rettig Jan 2000

Effects Of Age And Group Size On Habitat Selection And Activity Level In Xenopus Laevis Tadpoles, Danielle R. Golden, Geoffrey R. Smith, Jessica E. Rettig

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

We experimentally examined the effects of age and group size on habitat selection and activity level in Xenopus laevis tadpoles. Tadpoles were introduced into an experimental arena at two ages (early and late) and at three group sizes (one, two, and six tadpoles). Group size did not affect habitat selection or activity level. Late tadpoles were more active and used the bottom of the arena more than early tadpoles. Our results suggest that an intrinsic cue (age) is important in determining the behavior of these tadpoles.

Mitochondrial-Dna Variation In Pallid And Shovelnose Sturgeons, Scaphirhynchus (Pisces: Acipenseridae), Richard Bischof, Allen L. Szalanski

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Sequencing analysis was used to characterize a mtDNA D-loop amplicon of 838 bp. Four pallid sturgeons, Scaphirhynchus albus, and four shovelnose sturgeons, S. platorynchus, from four states (Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota) were used for this analysis. DNA sequencing of the nine fish revealed eleven polymorphic sites and six distinct haplotypes. No fixed nucleotide substitutions were observed between pallid and shovelnose sturgeons.

Nutrients As A Link Between Ionic Concentration/Composition And Diatom Distributions In Saline Lakes, J. E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz Jan 2000

Nutrients As A Link Between Ionic Concentration/Composition And Diatom Distributions In Saline Lakes, J. E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Diatom profiles in closed-basin lake sediments are commonly used to reconstruct climate change based on the observed correlations between salinity (ionic concentration) and modern diatom assemblages. Diatom assemblages are strongly correlated not only with salinity but also anion composition, with certain taxa characteristic of carbonate systems and others sulfate-dominated waters. Although strong correlations exist, the actual mechanisms behind these correlations are unknown. Here we briefly review the influence of salinity and ionic composition on nutrient dynamics in saline lakes and suggest that these interactions may drive shifts in diatom species composition along gradients of ionic concentration/ composition. We discuss the …

Opportunities For Family Research In Marketing, Suraj Commuri, James W. Gentry Jan 2000

Opportunities For Family Research In Marketing, Suraj Commuri, James W. Gentry

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Family as a consuming and decision making unit is a central phenomenon in marketing and consumer behavior. However, in the recent past, there has been a decline in interest in family as a unit of analysis. Yet, at the same time, the family -- as an institution -- is undergoing a metamorphosis and currently stands at the threshold of significant transformation. In this paper, we argue that the decreased interest in family as a unit of analysis in marketing is largely due to the fact that many interesting propositions about family as a consuming unit remain outside the current perspective …
