Bioavailability And Exposure Assessment Of Petroleum Hydrocarbons And Trace Elements In Birds Nesting Near The North Platte River, Casper, Wyoming, Kimberly Dickerson, Thomas W. Custer, Christine M. Custer, Ken Allen
Bioavailability And Exposure Assessment Of Petroleum Hydrocarbons And Trace Elements In Birds Nesting Near The North Platte River, Casper, Wyoming, Kimberly Dickerson, Thomas W. Custer, Christine M. Custer, Ken Allen
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The objectives of this study were to compare refinery-related petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and nestling house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) at sites along the North Platte River Casper, Wyoming in 1997 and 1998; and to determine if contaminants were present in concentrations that could adversely affect the birds. Because trace element concentrations, mixed function oxidase activity, and the variation in DNA are often associated with petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in birds, each was measured as indicators of petroleum contamination. Sediment and aquatic invertebrates were also sampled for characterizing a possible contaminant source to …

Harvest Information Program: Evaluation And Recommendations, Jeffrey M. Ver Steeg, Richard C. Elden, David D. Dolton, Paul I. Padding
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
In 1989, William Molini, then President of IAFW A, appointed an ad hoc committee to develop a strategy for improving the overall reliability of the annual harvest estimates of migratory game birds and directed special emphasis on those species for which harvest data were the least satisfactory, e.g., doves and woodcock. In 1990, that ad hoc committee recommended to IAFW A that the Service, in cooperation with the states, establish a regulation requiring all migratory game bird hunters to obtain a nationwide permit annually. That recommendation (in Ad Hoc Committee Report on Waterfowl Breeding Ground Surveys and Migratory Bird Harvest …
The Importance Of Functional Form In Optimal Control Solutions Of Problems In Population Dynamics, Michael C. Runge, Fred A. Johnson
The Importance Of Functional Form In Optimal Control Solutions Of Problems In Population Dynamics, Michael C. Runge, Fred A. Johnson
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Optimal control theory is finding increased application in both theoretical and applied ecology, and it is a central element of adaptive resource management. One of the steps in an adaptive management process is to develop alternative models of system dynamics, models that are all reasonable in light of available data, but that differ substantially in their implications for optimal control of the resource. We explored how the form of the recruitment and survival functions in a general population model for ducks affected the patterns in the optimal harvest strategy, using a combination of analytical, numerical, and simulation techniques. We compared …

In a series ofmodels of Plasmodium falciparum dynamics, spontaneous local extinctions ofthe parasite sometimes occurred under steady, perennial-transmission conditions. These extinctions occurred only with extremely low mosquito densities or when the parameter describing the duration ofhu man infection-blocking immunity was at its maximum value, and, simultaneously, those describing vector survivorship and the duration ofhuman infectivity were at their minimum values. The range and frequency of extinctions increased with seasonal transmission, and decreased with the emergence ofrecombinant genotypes. Here we extend the immunity parameter up to levels that would describe a successful vaccine, and examine the combined influences of seasonality, genotype …

Epidemic Malaria In The Menoreh Hills Of Central Java, Mazie J. Barcus, Ferdinand Laihad, M. Sururi, Priyanto Sismadi, Harijani Marwoto, Michael J. Bangs, J. Kevin Baird
United States Navy: Publications
After more than 50 years of effective management, resurgent malaria threatens residents in the Menoreh Hills and the foothills of the Dieng Plateau of Central Java, Indonesia. The Dieng Plateau dominates the highland center of Central Java. The steep Menoreh Hills, surrounded by rice paddy habitats, cover approximately 500 km2 with no peaks greater than 1,000 m. We studied epidemic malaria in Purworejo district, one of the three districts containing the Menoreh Hills. Between 1986 and 1995, the annual parasite incidence (API) in Purworejo ranged from 2 to 11 cases per 1,000 residents per year and was typically approximately …

Gemfibrozil, A Lipid-Lowering Drug, Inhibits The Induction Of Nitric-Oxide Synthase In Human Astrocytes, Kalipada Pahan, Malabendu Jana, Xiaojuan Liu, Bradley S. Taylor, Charles Wood, Susan M. Fischer
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Gemfibrozil, a lipid-lowering drug, inhibited cytokine- induced production of NO and the expression of inducible nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) in human U373MG astroglial cells and primary astrocytes. Similar to gemfibrozil, clofibrate, another fibrate drug, also inhibited the expression of iNOS. Inhibition of human iNOS promoter-driven luciferase activity by gemfibrozil in cytokine-stimulated U373MG astroglial cells suggests that this compound inhibits the transcription of iNOS. Since gemfibrozil is known to activate peroxisome proliferator- activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), we investigated the role of PPAR- α in gemfibrozil-mediated inhibition of iNOS. Gemfibrozil induced peroxisome proliferator-responsive element (PPRE)-dependent luciferase activity, which was inhibited by the expression of …

Derivation Of Risk Based Wipe Surface Screening Levels For Industrial Scenarios, Lisa M. May, Bonnie Gaborek, Tony Pitrat, Laura Peters
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The environmental characterization of building interiors and other surfaces has generally been performed with wipe-sampling because it is a non-destructive technique. There is no consensus, however, as to the interpretation of the results of wipe-sampling. Specifically, there is not a standardized method to determine if chemicals found at sampled levels pose a threat to human health. A methodology was developed, based on acceptable health risk levels, to derive screening levels for evaluating wipe-sampling results pertaining to industrial scenarios. The methodology was based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Region IX Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) approach; a multi-exposure methodology …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
It was recently demonstrated that mutations in the human SPTLC1 gene, encoding the Lcb1p subunit of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), cause hereditary sensory neuropathy type I (1, 2). As a member of the subfamily of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate enzymes known as the α-oxoamine synthases, serine palmitoyltransferase catalyzes the committed step of sphingolipid synthesis. The residues that are mutated to cause hereditary sensory neuropathy type I reside in a highly conserved region of Lcb1p that is predicted to be a catalytic domain of Lcb1p on the basis of alignments with other members of the α-oxoamine synthase family. We found that the corresponding mutations …

Abstract
Background: Changing etiologic patterns and the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, particularly an increase in macrolide-resistant pneumococcal bacteremia, are causing physicians to adopt new approaches to the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
Objective: The relative efficacy and tolerability of levofloxacin monotherapy and azithromycin and ceftriaxone combination therapy were assessed in hospitalized adults with moderate to severe CAP.
Methods: This Phase IV, multicenter, open-label, randomized trial compared 2 treatment regimens: (1) levofloxacin 500 mg PO or IV q24h, and (2) azithromycin 500 mg IV q24h for ≥2 days plus ceftriaxone 1 g IV q24h for 2 days, …
Role Of Malondialdehyde-Acetaldehyde Adducts In Liver Injury, Dean J. Tuma
Role Of Malondialdehyde-Acetaldehyde Adducts In Liver Injury, Dean J. Tuma
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
Malondialdehyde and acetaldehyde react together with proteins in a synergistic manner and form hybrid protein adducts, designated as MAA adducts. MAA-protein adducts are composed of two major products whose structures and mechanism of formation have been elucidated. MAA adduct formation, especially in the liver, has been demonstrated in vivo during ethanol consumption. These protein adducts are capable of inducing a potent immune response, resulting in the generation of antibodies against both MAA epitopes, as well as against epitopes on the carrier protein. Chronic ethanol administration to rats results in significant circulating antibody titers against MAA-adducted proteins, and high anti-MAA titers …

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
When President Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act (ESA) into law in 1973, it is unlikely that anyone imagined the pivotal role it would play in a wide range of land and water management decisions. There are now over 1,200 species of plants and animals listed as threatened or endangered in the United States. Certain areas of the country that historically have had a great diversity of species are now home to large numbers oflisted plants and animals. California, for example, has 292 listed species, and Alabama has 125. In some areas, every major land and water management decision or …
Dietary Amino Acid Utilization For Body Protein Deposition — Current And Future Research, Janeth J. Colina, Austin Lewis, Phillip S. Miller
Dietary Amino Acid Utilization For Body Protein Deposition — Current And Future Research, Janeth J. Colina, Austin Lewis, Phillip S. Miller
Nebraska Swine Reports
In modern pork production it is important to maximize the animal’s potential for daily lean gain by increasing the body protein deposition with as little wastage of the ingested amino acids as possible. Therefore, it is important to maximize the efficiency with which dietary amino acids are used for protein deposition or lean gain. This efficiency is measured by using nitrogen balance studies or comparative slaughter procedures. Supplementing swine diets with crystalline amino acids and replacing part of the dietary protein can reduce diet cost and will also reduce the amount of nitrogen excreted in manure. However, it has been …

Growth And Carcass Responses In The Ne Index Line Estimated In Pure-Line And Crossbred Litters, D. B. Petry, J. W. Holl, Rodger K. Johnson
Nebraska Swine Reports
The objective was to estimate responses in growth and carcass traits in the NE Index line (I) that was selected 19 generations for increased litter size. Responses in pure-line, F1 and 3-way cross litters were compared. In Exp 1, 694 gilts that were retained for breeding, including 448 I and control (C) and 246 F1 I and C by Danbred™ Landrace (L), were evaluated. Direct genetic effects of I and C did not differ for backfat or days to 230 lb; however, I had 0.24 in2 smaller longissimus muscle area (LMA) than C (P < 0.05). F1 gilts had …
Applicability Of High-Rise™ Hog Housing For Finishing Operations, Richard R. Stowell
Applicability Of High-Rise™ Hog Housing For Finishing Operations, Richard R. Stowell
Nebraska Swine Reports
The design of High-Rise™ swine facilities allows the generation of a solid, manure-laden material from hogs raised in confinement housing with slatted floors. The volume of manure that must be handled annually can be reduced through continuous moisture loss that takes place within the system’s drying bed and recycling of bed material. Recycling typically involves mixing material twice a year — at the end of finishing periods. Moisture contents of twice-recycled manure-laden bed material ranged between 55-65% with continuous aeration for three years of production. This moisture range makes the material acceptable directly as feedstock for composting. Ammonia emissions should …

Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism, Peripheral Indexes Of Serotonin Function, And Personality Measures In Families With Alcoholism, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Geoffrey R. Twitchell, Gregory L. Hanna, Edwin H. Cook, Hiram E. Fitzgerald, Robert A. Zucker, Karley Y. Little
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
A functional polymorphism in the regulatory region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) is considered to be a plausible candidate gene for anxiety-related personality traits and for alcoholism. Empirical support for the association between 5-HTTLPR and psychological traits has been somewhat inconsistent; however, observations of the functional dominance of the low-activity s-allele over the l-allele have been more consistent. When studying the influence of particular genes on psychological traits, it seems useful also to assess more biological intermediate traits that may mediate the effects of those genes on the traits of interest. The present study examined relationships between 5-HTTLPR genotype, …
