The Multidimensionality Of Joining, Suzanne T. Ortega, J. Allen Williams Jr.
The Multidimensionality Of Joining, Suzanne T. Ortega, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
By focusing on membership in voluntary associations in general, the question of whether correlates of affiliation vary by organizational type tends to have been neglected. This is a significant omission from the standpoint of describing the characteristics of “joiners.” Additionally, most of what we know about the reasons for belonging has been inferred from observations of who joins. In this study, nine frequently identified correlates of voluntary association membership were examined in relation to five different types of organizations. Only two, education and race, were found to be related to all types. Thus, results indicate that affiliation is not a …

2. Testing Old, Testing New: Schoolboy Psychology And The Allocation Of Intellectual Resources, Gene V. Glass
The Future of Testing
There will be no divining of the future here- no megatrends, no reference to Orwell (except this one). What little we truly know about the future does not bear mentioning. Nor shall I refer to micro-computers, data banks, and other gaudy paraphernalia that the future holds for us. The future is best seen in a rear-view mirror. We can at least hope to see more clearly the recent past we have traversed. Appearances of rapid change are usually superficial. If we see the past and present clearly, we will know as much of our future as it is ever permitted …

Evaluation Of Inter-Flock Genetic Improvement Programs For Sheep And Goats, G. B. Nicoll, L. Bodin, J. V. Jonmundson
Evaluation Of Inter-Flock Genetic Improvement Programs For Sheep And Goats, G. B. Nicoll, L. Bodin, J. V. Jonmundson
World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)
Some of the factors involved in inter-flock or breed improvement programs are discussed. Such programs are complicated by the fact that sheep and goats produce a wide range of products under diverse environmental, management and economic circumstances. This leads to problems in defining realistic breeding objectives arising from determining the beneficiaries of genetic improvement, the major genetic decision makers in the industry and the relative importance of the various productive characteristics. The implementation of functional performance recording systems, breeding systems to generate young sire replacements, and testing systems to disseminate genetic improvement, also depend on the conditions under which the …
Dust Bowl Historiography, Harry C. Mcdean
Dust Bowl Historiography, Harry C. Mcdean
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the late 1930s, Undersecretary of Agriculture Milburn Lincoln Wilson organized "T ravelling Great Plains Schools," culminating three decades of research and reform work in the Great Plains. The schools brought hundreds of rural social scientists together with scores of federal and state policymakers. The schools were broken into two sections, one dedicated to the southern Plains and the other to the northern. Those who attended spent several weeks making their way through the Plains, with care taken to differentiate problems particular to each of the two regions. In the southern Plains, the school spent several days examining the problems …

Review Of The Canadian Prairies: A History By Gerald Friesen, R. T. Harrison
Review Of The Canadian Prairies: A History By Gerald Friesen, R. T. Harrison
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In The Canadian Prairies, Gerald Friesen has taken on a monumental task. Over the past generation prairie historiography has grown too rapidly to lend itself to synoptic treatments. It would therefore be unreasonable to expect specialists to be entirely satisfied with Friesen's treatment of their aspects of prairie history. I know I would like to edit his remarks on prairie literature, yet my informal inquiries suggest that this book is highly respected both by professional historians and by prairie pioneers, who find that Friesen's narration rings true to their actual experiences. One of Friesen's greatest achievements is in making …

Review Of Loren Eiseley: The Development Of A Writer By E. Fred Carlisle And Loren Eiseley By Leslie E. Gerber And Margaret Mcfadden, Nancy Bernhardt Holland
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Students of Loren Eiseley who have long looked forward to an account of his life more complete than that found in All the Strange Hours, the episodic and ruminative volume Eiseley designated as his autobiography, have new grounds for disappointment. E. Fred Carlisle in Loren Eiseley: The Development of a Writer and Leslie E. Gerber and Margaret McFadden in the Loren Eiseley volume of Ungar's Literature and Life series provide some pleasant reading but fail to capture the essential Eiseley.
Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann
Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Environmental determinism has long been discredited in explaining the social organization of pastoral and agro-pastoral peoples. I Today the effect of climate on social organization is recognized as mediated by social, economic, and political factors. 2 Thus, social organization in Botswana reflects the influence of a wide variety of factors, among them Christian missionaries, interethnic warfare, past and continuing aggression of South Africa, introduction of the iron plow, British colonialism, Boer traders, discovery of minerals (most recently diamonds), international donor aid, and so on. Over the past century there have been substantial changes in a number of important trends: life …

Abideth Forever? Global Use Of Semiarid Lands In The Interwar Years, J. M. Powell
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
I have undertaken a highly selective Cook's Tour in this article, attempting to integrate our understanding of semiarid lands around the globe. The focus is concentrated on the period between the two great wars when new nationalisms, old imperial networks, and the burgeoning ambitions of scientists combined to create new systems of land use in the semiarid regions, but a few sorties have been made into earlier and later periods to assist the interpretation of specific projects. My own country, Australia, is used as the starting point for the tour, but the influence of American Donald Worster's Dust Bowl (1979) …
Breeding Improvement Of Swamp Buffalo, Charan Chantalakhana
Breeding Improvement Of Swamp Buffalo, Charan Chantalakhana
World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)
A review of performance of the swamp buffalo concerning reproductive traits, growth and carcass, milk production, and work capacities was presented. The potential for breeding improvement of certain traits was discussed. Breeding objectives and goals to suit the need of Asian smallfarmers were emphasized. Breeding of swamp buffalo for draft and for multi-purpose was discussed. Genetic selection and crossbreeding of the swamp buffalo were reviewed. It was proposed that genetic selection for weight and gain should improve meat production as well as draft ability of the swamp buffalo, while crossbreeding should be limited to experimental scale until crossbred buffaloes have …
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
These words, spoken at the beginning of each televised "Star Trek" episode, set the stage for the fantastic future. Although the "Star Trek" series was cancelled in 1969 after only three years of production, it generated a large cult following that flourishes still today. One reason for the series' remarkable longevity is its depiction of the future as a Freudian fantasy. This Freudian vision draws on cultural myths embedded in the patriarchal dominance of men over women characteristic of Western civilization.
According to Freud, both sexes are driven by three instincts --- sex, aggression, and the death wish---but men have …

Board Composition And The Commission Of Illegal Acts: An Investigation Of Fortune 500 Companies, Idalene F. Kesner, Bart Victor, Bruce T. Lamont
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Corporate boardroom processes and board composition have long been topics of interest and debate for both organizational researchers and practitioners. In recent years, however, criticism of corporate boards has increased dramatically, as evidences by the comments of former International Telephone & Telegraph chairman, Harold Geneen. According to Geneen, "the boards of directors of U.S. industry include numerous first-rate people doing what amounts to a second-rate job" (1984: 258). In defense of his position, he brought up many points, but board composition is the most central to his argument. Essentially, Geneen and other critics have argued that the designs of corporate …

Spatial Structure In Pedestrian Route Choice, Michael R. Hill
Spatial Structure In Pedestrian Route Choice, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Aggregated pedestrian trip lengths typically follow gravity model predictions. Given this, the present research asks which route will a pedestrian choose when confronted by two or more distance-minimizing routes of equal length. Ethological, questionnaire, and interview data reveal the spatial structure of pedestrian route choices in terms of spatial complexity measures. Route complexity is found to vary by age and gender. The study is based on data collected in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill
Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Untermann undertakes to provide design professionals and other decision makers with a down-to-earth, practical guide for converting existing automobile-dominated urban areas into bicycle and pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods and cities. Based primarily on his personal observation, experience, and professional predilections, Untermann lists the presumed "needs" of pedestrians/bicyclists and presents a brief, uneven description of the "characteristics" of walking. A separate chapter, not well-integrated with the rest of the book, focuses specifically on bicyclists and bikeways. The second half of the book addresses specific improvements-primarily for pedestrians suggested by the author for older neighborhoods, downtowns, and suburban communities respectively.
Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt
Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The issues raised by the New Political Right and the Moral Majority have overlapped in recent political history. Researchers have assumed that a single additive scale across conservative issues can identify the base of support for the Moral Majority as an organization. We examine general support for the Moral Majority separately from support for six specific issues: teaching creationism, voluntary public school prayer, military defense spending, gun control, pornography and abortion. Data are from a 1982 random sample of adult respondents from Nebraska (N = 1907).
Overall, support for the Moral Majority organization is low. Discriminant analysis identifies fundamentalist and …

Furbearer Management And The Steel Foothold Trap, Samuel B. Linhart
Furbearer Management And The Steel Foothold Trap, Samuel B. Linhart
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The trapping of furbearers, particularly with steel foothold traps, has become more and more controversial. The controversy is significant because the steel trap is considered the most versatile of the various methods available for capturing furbearers (Payne 1980). Whether traps are used to reduce livestock losses by predators or to harvest furs, the controversy has gained the attention and interest of various social factions, each with differing beliefs, attitudes, and philosophies.

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman
The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the personality characteristics of secondary marketing teachers, and (2) to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and selected demographic and attitudinal variables with job satisfaction (intrinsic, extrinsic, and general) of marketing teachers. A random sample of 475 marketing teachers was drawn from the membership of the national Marketing Education Association; responses were received from 73 percent of the marketing teachers surveyed. Two instruments, the Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, were combined with attitudinal and demographic questions for use in data collection. Eight null hypotheses were proposed to investigate …

Phylogenetics And The Future Of Helminth Systematics, Daniel R. Brooks
Phylogenetics And The Future Of Helminth Systematics, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic systematics is a relatively new formal technique that increases the precision with which one can make direct estimates of the history of phylogenetic descent. These estimates are made in the form of phylogenetic trees, or cladograms. Cladograms may be converted directly into classifications or they may be used to test various hypotheses about the evolutionary process. More than 20 phylogenetic analyses of helminth groups have been published already, and these have been used to investigate evolutionary questions in developmental biology, biogeography, speciation, coevolution, and evolutionary ecology.
French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
The recent controversy in France over the new history textbooks based on the reforms promulgated under René Haby in the middle 1970s can serve as a reminder of the many uses such textbooks can have in our civilization classes. In the past ten years the Haby programs have become the symbol for what many observers in France take to be a serious weakening of the teaching of history since the late 1960s. At the primary level, history was joined to geography and the sciences as an activité d'éveil; no longer was it the privileged instrument for fostering national identity as …
The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Beginning in late 1977, the media, television in particular, portrayed as a unique cultural phenomenon an emerging American Agriculture Movement (AAM), a pending farm strike, and a depressed farm economy that had caused this mobilization. Much was indeed unique, especially to the individual farmers and the specific manner in which they were attempting to apply political pressures, but the American Agriculture Movement itself was similar to other organizational attempts that have taken place in rural America.
In the following paper we chronicle the emergence of the American Agriculture Movement as a distinct entity, identify the common features in the emergence …
Public Tolerance Of A Suburban Deer Herd: Implications For Control, Daniel J. Decker, Thomas A. Gavin
Public Tolerance Of A Suburban Deer Herd: Implications For Control, Daniel J. Decker, Thomas A. Gavin
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 2nd (1985)
Suburban deer populations have been increasing in the eastern U.S., resulting in deer-human conflicts that can not always be resolved by a traditional management approach., Professionals responsible for management of deer damage (herd control and extension education) need information on the extent and nature of deer damage in suburban situations. Attitudes of suburban residential property owners about wildlife in general and deer in particular must be identified so that control measures that are socially acceptable as well as biologically feasible can be formulated o People's tolerance of deer damage and their propensity for undertaking on-site preventive measures need to be …
