A Two-Headed Tortoise, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
A Two-Headed Tortoise, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
INQUIRIES from various quarters have been made so repeatedly for the sequel to the brief story of a young two-headed tortoise, Chrysemys picta, published in the American Journal of Science for October, 1888, that the author is led to believe that a public account thereof will serve more useful ends than many private ones. In order that the sequel may be more intelligible to all, a brief resume of the first paper will be given.
The young tortoise, hatched but a day or so, was found in the marshes bordering West River, New Haven, Conn. The carapace, which was somewhat …

THE PROBLEM OF OUR SOILS AND SOIL MOISTURE.
The soil survey of the state, which was begun by the author in November of 1892, has progressed to the point where it might be considered finished. That is, one or more samples of soils have been taken from every distinct soil region in the state-in fact, most of the separate counties are represented, and mechanical analyses of many of these have already been made. However, in consideration of the size of our counties, the work will not be declared complete until each is represented in the state museum by soil prisms …

Some Notes On Nebraska Birds: A List Of The Species And Subspecies Found In The State, With Notes On Their Distribution, Food-Habits, Etc., Lawrence Bruner
Papers in Ornithology
For upwards of twenty-five years the writer has taken an interest in our birds and made notes relative to their abundance, migrations, nesting, food-habits, etc., simply for personal gratification.
About two years ago, during a conversation in which the relation of birds to horticulture incidentally arose, Professor F. W. Taylor suggested the advisability of devoting a portion of a succeeding annual report to our Nebraska birds. With this object in view both the professor and the writer broached the matter to other members of the Society. Several at once not only became interested in the matter, but suggested its early …
The Earliest Name For Steller's Sea Cow And Dugong, Theodore S. Palmer
The Earliest Name For Steller's Sea Cow And Dugong, Theodore S. Palmer
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In 1811, Illiger published a number of new genera, proposing among others, Rytina for the sea cow of Bering Island and Halicore for the dugong of the Indian Ocean. Nearly all recent writers on mammals have adopted these genera, apparently overlook ing the fact that both animals had been named before 1811. As early as 1794 Retzius described the sea cow in the 'Handlingar' of the Stockholm Academy of Science, placing it in a new genus which he called Hydrodamalis, and the species, based on the Vacca marina of Steller, Hydrodamalis stelleri. The generic description is sufficient to …

The Parasitic Worms Of Man And The Domestic Animals, Henry B. Ward
The Parasitic Worms Of Man And The Domestic Animals, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
This article has been written for the general information of those engaged either on a large or on a small scale in stock raising in our own state particularly, and, while not intended to be a complete treatise on the subject, it includes references to those parasites which seem to be the most important or most likely to be found within our borders. The parasites of cattle, sheep, horse, hog, dog, cat, and man, which have many species in common, form the subject of this paper. The parasites of domestic fowl are, however, quite different from those considered here and …
The Asiatic Lung-Distome In The United States, Henry B. Ward
The Asiatic Lung-Distome In The United States, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
In 1893 I reported the occurrence of the Asiatic distome in the lungs of a cat examined in Ann Arbor, Mich. This was the first reported find of this species on this continent, and the possibility of its being a permanent guest in this country was so serious that I urged a careful examination of all cases of lung-parasites in the domestic animals, with a view to ascertaining whether this might be an isolated instance, or whether the parasite was actually established within our land, for it is true that the Chinese, among whom the parasite is very common, regard …

The Vegetable Kingdom is in other words the plant world, or the aggregate of organisms called plants. It is co-ordinate with the animal kingdom, and these two include all forms of organic life on the earth. It is not possible to define precisely the line which separates the lower portions of these two kingdoms; we may therefore regard them as simply branches of one great group, inseparable below, but widely divergent above. In attempting to separate plants from animals the most we can do is to bring together those characters which separate the greater number of plants from animals, and …

Article Viii.-On The Affinities Of Leptarctus Primus Of Leidy, J. L. Wortman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Up to the present time but very little has been known of the existence of the peculiarly American family Procyonidae in any deposits older than the very latest Quartenary. Leidy has described and figured an isolated last upper tooth, from the Loup Fork deposits of Nebraska, under the name of Leptarctus prirnus, which has been referred to this family. The Museum Expedition of last year into this region was successful in obtaining additional material, which we provisionally refer to Leidy's species.
A Preliminary Introduction To The Study Of Entomology, Lawrence Bruner
A Preliminary Introduction To The Study Of Entomology, Lawrence Bruner
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
This book has been prepared for the purpose of partially supplying a demand that seems to exist here in the West for an elementary work on entomology such as can be used in the public schools and on the farm. It is not an original production, but comprises notes from many sources as they have been gathered by the writer and presented from time to time in talks to his classes in the University of Nebraska and before audiences at farmers' institutes throughout the state. The chapters on remedies and on apple and small grain insects have been compiled and …

Nebraska: Her Resources, Advantages, And Development, Joseph Garneau, Jr.
Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State
Almost midway between the two greatest oceans of the world, its eastern boundary marked by the rapid flowing Missouri, the westernmost counties shadowed by the towering ranges of the Rockies, with the land of the Dakotas to the north and the great agricultural state of Kansas to the south, lies the garden spot of that vast and shadowy country (which but a few short years since was only known as The Great American Desert).
Today it is the State of Nebraska, the happy home of one million and a half of thrifty, industrious and prosperous people. In less than a …

On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman
On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Some ten years or more ago, on first attempting to teach English Literature historically, I found my attention peculiarly drawn to the differences of form between the sentences of More, Hooker, Lyly, and other early prosaists, and of approved stylists in our own age. Here was clearly an organic and sustained development, yet without scientific recognition of a single fact or principle of change. It seemed that something might easily be done towards determining the course of an evolution so evident and remarkable. But I had, or believed I had, no leisure for serious study of the subject, and found …

A Second Edition Of Webber's “Appendix To The Catalogue Of The Flora Of Nebraska." With A Supplementary List Of Recently Reported Species, Herbert J. Webber, Charles E. Bessey
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
PREFATORY NOTE.
The importance to Nebraska botanical students of the paper entitled an "Appendix to the Catalogue of the Flora of Nebraska," prepared by Mr. Herbert J . Webber, M. A., formerly assistant in botany in the University of Nebraska, now assistant in the Shaw School of Botany, St. Louis, warrants its republication by the University. It was published originally in the Transactions of the Academy of Science of St. Louis (Vol. VI., No. 1, March 12, 1892.) The present edition differs from the first only in the correction of a few minor errors, and the rearrangement of the index. …

A Review Of The Cattle Business In Johnson County, Wyoming Since 1882 And The Causes That Led To The Recent Invasion, Oscar H. "Jack" Flagg
Electronic Texts in American Studies
"A Review of the Cattle Business in Johnson County, Wyoming, Since 1882, and the Causes That Led to the Recent Invasion" by Oscar H. Flagg has been ignored by every historian of the period until now with the exception of one who borrowed extensively from it without acknowledgment. Never yet between covers, it ran serially in the weekly Buffalo (Wyoming) Bulletin for eleven installments in 1892, the first appearing when Nate Champion was scarcely three weeks in his grave. The book is biased where its author's personal conflicts are involved but is largely accurate in regard to general facts, as …

A Second Report Upon The Native Trees And Shrubs Of Nebraska, Charles E. Bessey, Robert Bolin , Depositor
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Dr. Bessey was then Nebraska State Botanist and “Professor of Botany, State University, Lincoln Nebraska.” The State University is now called that University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This document was published as a contribution to the knowledge of the native woody plants of the state. Several reports had been published previously each containing additions and corrections. This report contains a “Special Request” that asked readers around the state to send samples of native trees and shrubs to the author.
The report contains a classification list of the various trees and shrubs along with information about where they can be found. A table …

The notes and descriptions given in this catalogue are confined to the Ophidia, or serpents, of Nebraska. The range of the collections made included representative localities in different parts of the state, and only specimens actually examined by the author are included in the catalogue. The localities by counties are represented on the accompanying map.
Localities represented by the specimens examined by the author at the time of making out this catalogue are indicated by the solid circular blotches. The rings indicate the localities represented in the collections of the National Museum as published in Yarrow's Check List. In addition, …
On The Color-Vocabulary Of Children, Harry K. Wolfe
On The Color-Vocabulary Of Children, Harry K. Wolfe
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
The very interesting investigations and discussions on the development of the color-sense in man, during historical times, have indirectly shown the deficiency of ancient languages in words for simple sensations. Even if the validity of the inference drawn by the original investigators is more than doubtful, their labor has not been in vain. In seeking evidence for the recent evolution of the sense of color, Gladstone, Geiger, and others have shown that few words denoting color are used in the earliest literature of several nations. Furthermore, most of the color-words found denote shades of red, orange, or yellow. Violet is …

Census of Hallucinations
May I ask for the publicity of your pages to aid me in procuring co-operation in a scientific investigation for which I am responsible? I refer to the "Census of Hallucinations," which was begun several years ago by the Society for Psychical Research, and of which the International Congress of Experimental Psychology at Paris, last summer, assumed the future responsibility, naming a committee in each country to carry on the work.
The object of the inquiry is twofold: lst, to get a mass of facts about hallucinations which may serve as a basis for a scientific study …
The Winnebago County (Iowa) Meteorites, George F. Kunz, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, Joseph Torrey Jr.
The Winnebago County (Iowa) Meteorites, George F. Kunz, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, Joseph Torrey Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
A remarkable meteor, or meteoric shower, passed over this State at 5.30 P.M., Friday, May 2. In spite of the brightness of the sun, shining at the time in a nearly cloudless sky, the light of the meteor was very noticeable. Its great size, powerful illumination, discharge of sparks, comet-like tail three to five degrees in length, and the great train of smoke which marked its course for a full ten minutes after its passage, made a strong and lasting impression on the minds of all who saw it. Unfortunately the clamor over an exciting game of ball prevented the …

A Nematode Formula, Nathan Augustus Cobb
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
I hope by the aid of this new formula to be able to describe, even without the aid of figures, at least such species as belong to already well known genera, so accurately as to leave little to be desired, and yet so briefly as to leave space for the full discussion of the important relations existing between these worms and diseases of plants.

MORPHO-BIOLOGICAL CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN TWO OR MORE MICRO- ETIOLOGICAL ORGANISMS NOT SUFFICIENT GROUNDS FOR PRONOUNCING THE DISEASES WITH WHICH THEY ARE CONNECTED IDENTICAL. The details of this discussion will be found in my report on the swine-plague. It is necessary, however, to touch upon the essential points here also. As was there shown, Hueppe asserts that the European diseases previously mentioned as being caused by a member of this group of belted, ovoid germs, viz., the “ Huhne Cholera, Kaninchen Septikasmie, und Wild Seuche ’ ’ are all one and the same disease, because their micro-etiological organisms have the same form, …

Inoculation—Vaccination, Frank S. Billings
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
When one comes to discuss this question with the members of the profession as he casually meets them, he is often surprised to find how uncertain and clouded the prevailing ideas are upon the subject. In fact, the majority of physicians do not seem to have any clear conception of the act connected with the words “ inoculation ” and “ vaccination.”

The Capital Question In Nebraska, And The Location Of The Seat Of Government At Lincoln, C. H. Gere
Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports
To found a city is a human ambition older than history. The name of the engineer that set the metes and bounds of the first block and street in Jerusalem, or Athens, or Philadelphia, or Minneapolis, may be obliterated by the tides for time, but his work endures to this day, and the man who would tamper with his records or shift his landmarks, is a miscreant by the unanimous voice of the nations. But there are other ambitions almost as exigent. Other than dreams of immortality nerve many a pioneer to make the fight for his rival site for …
