Test 068: Bates Steel Mule Model F 15-22, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

The Co-Operative Movement In Nebraska, Maurice Harley Weseen Jan 1920

The Co-Operative Movement In Nebraska, Maurice Harley Weseen

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

"Cut out the middleman." Thus runs the slogan adopted by a conference of representatives of farm and labor organizations held in Chicago a few weeks ago. Perhaps no one of the many suggestions for reducing the high cost of living is more popular or more prevalent at the present moment than this one which recommends the elimination of the middleman. The American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization with executive committee members from Massachusetts to Calitfornia, charges that the high prices paid by the consumer are altogether disproportionate to the prices received by the producer and that the middleman is …

The Nebraska Tractor Law And Rules For Official Tractor Tests, L. W. Chase, E. E. Brackett, O. W. Sjogren, C. K. Shedd

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The Nebraska Tractor Law, which became effective July 15, 1919, was enacted to encourage the manufacture and sale of improved types of tractors and to contribute to a more successful use of the tractor for farming. It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public. These tests will give reliable information on the power, capacity and fuel consumption of each tractor and also some information on endurance. The …

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward Dec 1919

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

In this paper are published data on three new species of Myxosporidia. Two species were observed in Lake Erie as parasites of a minnow; the third came from a species of Pacific salmon. Both cases present some unusual features that seem worthy of record.

Included are descriptions of Myxobolus aureatus nov. spec., Henneguya brachyura nov. sp., and Henneguya salminicola nov. spec.

I am greatly indebted to my colleague, Dr. Rokusaburo Kudo, for valuable assistance given while I was working up the material. The beautiful sketch illustrating the species from Lake Erie was prepared by Mrs. H. S. Jennings, to whom …

Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell Nov 1919

Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

An investigation was outlined (1) to determine the parasitism of Fusarium on soy bean, (2) to establish its relationship to Fusaria of the section Elegans in so far as a comparison of the cultural characters permitted, and (3) by means of cross- inoculations and field studies to determine the relationship of this disease of soy beans to the wilt disease of cowpeas (Vigna sinensis Hassk.) caused by Fusarium tracheiphilum Smith. The results of these investigations up to the close of the summer of 1916 have been reported. The studies were continued at the North Carolina Experiment Station until the …

Marketing Nebraska Potatoes, J. O. Rankin Oct 1919

Marketing Nebraska Potatoes, J. O. Rankin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Marketing Nebraska potatoes is no less important than raising them. It is often much more difficult, yet the pay for this service is grudgingly given. Failure to secure a good market causes more men to hesitate to enter or stay in the potato business than field risks. The full usefulness of the potato has not been secured until it is on the consumer's table. Every process necessary to get it there is a useful and productive process and the grower is no less productively engaged when working to find a market or to get these perishable wares into it than …

On The Specific Identity Of Heronimus Chelydrae Maccallum And Aorchis Extensus Barker And Parsons, Horace Wesley Stunkard

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The monostomes are among the least known of North American trematode groups. Records give descriptions of only six species, each the single representative of a genus, and according to the classification of Ward (1918) belonging to four different families. Existing descriptions in most cases are far from complete and data necessary for taxonomic determination are lacking. This deficiency has been pointed out by other workers, both in this country and in Europe, and the classification of the monostomes is not well established. In fact, certain investigators regard them as aberrant forms, sprung from different distome groups, which alike have lost …

The War With Germany: A Statistical Summary, Leonard P. Ayres

United States Army: Publications

Includes a statistical summary of the larger steps in the military preparation and action of the United States in the First World War (United States involvement, April 6, 1917-November 11, 1918). The data presented were compiled by the several sections of the Statistics Branch of the General Staff. In the main they set forth facts taken from the reports made by the Branch each week during the war to the President, the Secretary of War, and to the Chief of Staff. These have been supplemented by facts and figures secured from the offices of the Statistics Branch maintained during the …

Racine, Prosser Hall Frye Jul 1919

Racine, Prosser Hall Frye

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

When Racine began his career as a dramatist, he found thegen:.. eral definition of French tragedy already formulated by Cotneille. However the latter had come by his conception-whether freely and of his own instance, or in yielding to the pressure of offiCial criticism, or what is even more likely, in attempting to effect a compromise between these two influences-the upshot of his labour was, to all intents and purposes, the doctrine of the three unities. All that remained for Racine was to adapt himself to these prescriptions. N or should the'difficulty of the task be underrated. It was one which …

On Certain New Elucidations Of Shakespeare, L. A. Shermnan Jul 1919

On Certain New Elucidations Of Shakespeare, L. A. Shermnan

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Notes on Shakespeare's Workmanship. By Sir Arthur QuiIler-Couch, M. A. New York: Henry Holt and Company .

The title of Quiller-Couch's recent volume,l would seem to promise a fresh discussion of the dramaturgic method and excellencies of this author. No promise or prospect could have been more welcome. The technic of organizing a play is a matter of no slight concern. All the dramatic world is waiting for some satisfying if not final word.. There are critics and scholars who affirm that there is no such thing as dramatic construction. They would even add that there are no princiJ>les …

Farm Types In Nebraska, As Determined By Climatic, Soil, And Economic Factors, R. R. Spafford Mar 1919

Farm Types In Nebraska, As Determined By Climatic, Soil, And Economic Factors, R. R. Spafford

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This bulletin treats chiefly of Nebraska agricultural areas as determined by climatic, soil, and economic factors. Most of the subject matter centers about the kind of farm crops grown and their yields. Cultural practices applied to crops are only incidentally considered. Most of the data used are from the Thirteenth Census of the United States and cover the crop year 1909. The small amount of data not derived from this source comes largely from field studies in this State and is used merely to support certain methods of treating census data.

On A Species Of Hedruris Occurring Commonly In The Western Newt, Notophthalmus Torosus, Asa C. Chandler Mar 1919

On A Species Of Hedruris Occurring Commonly In The Western Newt, Notophthalmus Torosus, Asa C. Chandler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

It has recently been pointed out by Ward and Magath (1916) that the nematode fauna of North American freshwater fishes is almost unknown. From a survey of the literature this state of affairs appears to be almost if not quite as true of the nematodes of other cold-blooded vertebrates in North America.

While making stomach examinations of the Western Newt or water-dog, Notophthalmus torosus, the writer found a large percent of specimens captured in the vicinity of Corvallis, Oregon, infested by a nematode which was evidently a species of Hedruris. The structure and ecology of this worm are …

Xvii. The Ballad And The Dance, Louise Pound Jan 1919

Xvii. The Ballad And The Dance, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is the purpose of the following paper to examine the relationship of the mediceval ballad to the dance, in origin and in traditional usage. Particular reference is had to the English and Scottish ballad tvpe. In various preceding papers I have considered the theory currently accepted in America of the inseparableness of primitive dance, music, and song and have shown that primitive song is not narrative in character. I have also questioned the assumption that the ballad is the archetypal poetic form--this position should be assigned to the song, not the ballad--and the assumption of " communal " as …

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss Jan 1919

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss

Electronic Texts in American Studies

America's divinely-ordained mission is to serve humanity; Germany's ruler-imposed mission was to dominate mankind. America's galaxy of prophets culminates in the president, whose voice is heard throughout the earth; Germany's line of prophets crashes to ruin in the kaiser; "Deutchland ueber alles" has become a dirge, but rescued peoples are singing "Sweet land of liberty."

This address shows that a continuous voice of prophecy has rung out from American leaders, from the nation's beginning to the present time, proclaiming the mission of America to Humanity, -- culminating in the tremendous movement of 1918-19, when she undertakes to save democracy, and …

Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter Jan 1919

Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

For a number of years I have been studying the abnormalities of the circulatory system resulting from developmental disturbances. One paper relating to the aortic arches has already appeared, Poynter (1916), and in this one I shall confine myself to the anomalies of the heart. There are few subjects which have attracted more attention among the medical profession than the irregularities in the developmen~ of the heart and great vessels, but in the case of the heart the interest is not so much from the teratological side as in the case of the arteries; its developmental defects are frequently of …

The Ecological Relations Of Roots, John E. Weaver Jan 1919

The Ecological Relations Of Roots, John E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

Although considerable progress has been made in the study of root systems of desert plants (Cannon, 1911, 1913; Markle, 1917), very little information is available concerning the roots of other native species. During 1914 the writer investigated the root systems of the prairie plants of southeastern Washington, where the annual precipitation is only 21.6 inches and occurs mostly in the period of rest: Since that time it has been planned to make a comparative study of the roots of prairie plants growing in a more humid region and where the precipitation occurs mostly during the season of plant growth. The …

Rules For Tractor Demonstrations, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab Jan 1919

Rules For Tractor Demonstrations, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

The object of these rules, instructions and data is to make all tractor demonstrations of this kind comparable and of the greatest educational value. Anyone who has conducted tractor demonstrations in the past has realized the necessity of some standard rules to follow and those who afterwards have referred to the results, deplore the lack of uniformity in the demonstrations and the data. For those who have not had this experience will find that it is a great help to have satisfactory rules to follow.

The value of these demonstrations depends largely upon the accuracy of the data reported on …

Classification Of Springs, Kirk Bryan Jan 1919

Classification Of Springs, Kirk Bryan

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Among the common phenomena of nature, springs are notable because of their high usefulness. Since the earliest times the homes of men have clustered around them. In arid regions their number and size may limit the population. In many humid regions springs are so numerous and similar that distinctions between them are not recognized, yet they may be caused by so many principal and minor factors or by so many combinations of these factors as to make the origin of any one spring exceedingly complex or obscure. An interesting account of the many erroneous notions held by the ancients regarding …

The Supernatural In The Tragedies Of Euripides As Illustrated In Prayers, Curses, Oaths, Oracles, Prophecies, Dreams, And Visions, Ernest Heinrich Klotsche Jul 1918

The Supernatural In The Tragedies Of Euripides As Illustrated In Prayers, Curses, Oaths, Oracles, Prophecies, Dreams, And Visions, Ernest Heinrich Klotsche

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The spirit of the Greek drama is preeminently religious. Not only in its beginnings, hut throughout the most flourishing period of its history, it was in intimate connection with the supernatural which entered into its very heart, and constituted one of its essential elements. The theatrical representations at Athens, even in the days of Euripides and Aristophanes, were constituent parts of a great religious celebration. The presence of the supernatural element in Greek tragedy involved a definite attitude toward it on the part of each individual dramatist. The strength of personality which AEschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides possessed made them voice …

Studies Concerning The Elimination Of Experimental Error In Comparative Crop Tests, T. A. Kiesselbach Jun 1918

Studies Concerning The Elimination Of Experimental Error In Comparative Crop Tests, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is apparent that many sources of error have unconsciously entered into comparative crop yield tests. The very important matter of overcoming variation in soil conditions as a source of experimental error has been quite extensively studied and reported by various investigators during the past decade. The means suggested for reducing such error have been (1) repetition of plats and (2) correction of yields according to check plats planted to a uniform variety or treatment at stated intervals. Both methods have proved of value and a combination of both may often be used advantageously. Some danger always exists of error …
