The Poet Bland And Sixteen Specimen Poems, Martin Severin Peterson Dec 1943

The Poet Bland And Sixteen Specimen Poems, Martin Severin Peterson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The only appeal that needs to be made for the poet, Henry Meade Bland, is that he deserves to be better known. The shadow of obscurity has fallen upon a number of our American regional poets and their places in the sun usurped by practitioners of the more currently popular forms of literature. When interest in poetry some day revives, it will be useful to have a record of the poets who responded to their surroundings because of an inward urge to sing. Some of the truly indigenous literature of our own and earlier times is to be found in …

The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis Oct 1943

The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The use of substitutes for milk in the raising of calves is always of interest to the progressive dairyman, since there are a number of circumstances in which it is advantageous to reduce the milk feeding period. Producers of market milk often desire to raise their calves on as little milk as possible in order to have more milk available for market. When the demand for milk is good, dairymen who usually market cream only may prefer to sell milk and raise their calves on starters or other milk substitutes. Dairy farmers may wish to use the skim milk generally …

Nine of these tests were at Lincoln, Nebraska, and one was at the Hastings, Nebraska, Hydrological Project. Two tests were conducted in 1939, four in 1941, and four in 1942.

Fishes Of The Middle West, Rachel L. Carson Jul 1943

Fishes Of The Middle West, Rachel L. Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The waters of the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes are a potential source of several hundred million pounds of food in the form of tasty lake and river fishes. This rich resource of the inland waters is important to a nation at war. Because of the growing meat shortage, people will eat more fish than in pre-war years. In the interior of the country, people will eat more fresh-water fish than before, because fish are good and nutritious and because, in the coming months, the shipments of rosefish, halibut, shrimp, and other seafoods that come to them from the …

Food From The Sea: Fish And Shellfish Of New England, Rachel L. Carson Jan 1943

Food From The Sea: Fish And Shellfish Of New England, Rachel L. Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Millions of Americans are developing new wartime food habits, trying foods they once neglected, turning to alternates for long familiar products. For everyone of the ten fish or shellfish that make up mere than four-fifths of New England's catch there are seven species little known or utilized, many of which could provide tasty and nutritious foods. Turning to these under-utilized species will conserve food resources by lifting the burden of over-exploitation from such fishes as cod and haddock and will augment dwindling supplies of protein foods. Exploring the seafood markets for unfamiliar species rewards the housewife and her family with …

SINCE at present only heavily smoked mackerel is available, the market for which is limited because of its undesirable flavor, lightly smoked mackerel similar to finnan haddie or kippered salmon should prove much more popular. Increases In Aphid Populations On Potato Plants Sprayed With Zinc Arsenite In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate Jan 1943

Increases In Aphid Populations On Potato Plants Sprayed With Zinc Arsenite In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

During the 1941 growing season, field observations in western Nebraska indicated that aphids, Myzus persicae (Sulz.), were becoming abundant in experimental potato plots that had been treated with zinc arsenite-lime sulfur spray for controlling potato flea beetles, Epitrix cucumeris (Harr.), and the potato psyllid, Paratrioza cockerelli (Sulc.). Detailed examinations of leaves showed that significantly greater populations were present on the sprayed than on the untreated plants. Evidence of slight increases also was noted on plants dusted with a barium fluosilicate and sulfur mixture.
