Public Trials And A First Amendment Right Of Access: A Presumption Of Openness: Richmond Newspapers, Inc. V. Virginia, 100 S. Ct. 2814 (1980), Robert F. Copple
Nebraska Law Review
The first amendment freedoms of speech and press, and the sixth amendment right to a fair trial are considered to occupy a special place in the constitutional hierarchy. When these rights collide, rarely is the resulting fair trial–free press conflict easily resolved. In Gannett Co. v. DePasquale, the Supreme Court added one more facet to the conflict by holding that the sixth amendment right to a public trial was personal to the accused, and that the public trial right did not confer upon the public a right of access to pretrial suppression hearings. The Court's ambiguous opinion was viewed …
Resegregation Processes In Desegregated Schools And Status Relationships For Hispanic Students, Helen A. Moore, Peter Iadicola
Resegregation Processes In Desegregated Schools And Status Relationships For Hispanic Students, Helen A. Moore, Peter Iadicola
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The resegregation of students in desegregated elementary schools generates potential barriers to social integration and academic achievement. WE are interested in the role of greater status inequality in reducing academic achievement for minority students. We generate multiple measures of internal schooling processes such as ability grouping, high stakes testing, and unequal burdens of busing across racial ethnic groups at ten desegregated elementary schools in California selected as case studies from a larger sample of 182 schools. Hispanic student enrollments ranged from 10 percent to 53 percent of each campus and we assess variations in resegregation practices and student and campus …

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This research series began as a test of an emotion-attribution approach to moral behavior. However, in the early studies, college students who read about morality were subsequently more likely to cheat on a vocabulary test than were control subjects who read materials irrelevant to morality. We hypothesized that resentment toward the test constructors interacted with the moral schemas activated by the reading task. To reduce resentment, in Study III the vocabulary test was presented as the experimenter's doctoral research. As predicted, compared to controls, those subjects who read about morality cheated less. Study IV was a quasi-experiment that confirmed the …

The Relationship Of Economic Welfare And Perceived Financial Adequacy And Satisfaction Of Omaha Retired Families, Sheran L. Cramer
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of economic welfare and perceived financial adequacy and satisfaction of Omaha retired families. Secondary objectives were to examine the relationship between economic welfare and perceived adequacy and satisfaction and selected demographic factors and between income and economic welfare as measures of economic situation. Selected Omaha retirees were asked to complete the survey providing the necessary information to compute the economic welfare measure, background information and items to determine perceived financial adequacy and satisfaction. Background information included marital status, sex, race, age, education, family size, health and living situation. In addition, …

Guidelines And Strategies For Conducting Meetings, Joan North
Guidelines And Strategies For Conducting Meetings, Joan North
POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
The phrase, "We've got to stop meeting like this" is taking on new meaning in higher education as colleges and universities experiencing tighter budgets search for new ways to increase productivity, reduce costs and, as always, raise morale. Traditional collegial governance has in common with newer unionized approaches to decision making one especially notable characteristic-the need for meetings and committees. A conservative estimate of a person spending five hours in meetings per week would add up to 10,400 meeting hours in that person's lifetime. Higher education is probably responsible for more than its share of the 11 million meetings occuring …

Evaluation Designs, Clare Rose
POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
The evaluation models described in previous issues of the Quarterly represent some of the major paradigms of educational program evaluation; they have been used to guide many evaluations and they have influenced the thinking of many practicing evaluators. Models provide a broad base for designing evaluation activities by offering a framework and conceptualization that guides both the focus of the evaluator and the orientation of the evaluation. But models do not provide strategies for implementation. Guidelines are provided by the design, which establishes the conditions and procedures for collecting the data required to answer the questions of concern. The design …

The important news of POD is all around what I write here. Elections for new members of the Core Committee will be in process or completed by the time this issue hits the street. Planning is well underway for an exciting Annual Conference in Berkeley, California next October 14-16. The Task Force on Membership is working diligently on membership retention and growth and mix. A Research Committee operates. So, too, a Professional Relations Committee. And Regional Representatives. And an Executive Committee. We've even a journal, by Juno!
The important message in all this is that POD is working relatively efficiently …

Female Sexual Arousal And The Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden Ph.D., Horng-Shing Chang, Mary R. Witmer, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Self-reports of sexual arousal were significantly affected by conditions under which they were elicited. Such self-reports in women not taking oral contraceptives were congruent with a hormonal basis for such arousal only when the women were “unaware” that the study investigated sexual arousal as a function of the menstrual cycle. The “unaware” condition was operationalized by means of daily self-reports elicited from males and females for 11 weeks under the guise of a study of biological rhythms. A composite of one to three menstrual cycles for 26 women not taking oral contraceptives showed that sexual arousal during the luteal phase, …
Taste-Aversion Learning And Its Implications For Rodent Control, Robert J. Robbins
Taste-Aversion Learning And Its Implications For Rodent Control, Robert J. Robbins
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 9th (1980)
Although bait shyness has long been recognized as a problem to be overcome in the control of vertebrate pests, it has recently been suggested that the phenomenon might be turned to an advantage and used as an alternative, non-lethal form of control. Unfortunately, this technique has not proven to be as useful as hoped, as the work which has been done on coyotes is inconclusive at best and some recent work on rodents has cast serious doubts upon the method's potential. However, an extensive literature dealing with the formation of poison-based food aversions now exists, and insights gained from these …
Representation And Process In Reasoning About Logical Relationships, David Moshman
Representation And Process In Reasoning About Logical Relationships, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
According to a popular conception of reasoning, the thinker first mentally represents given information and then processes the resulting representations. It is commonly assumed, at least implicitly, that difficulty of the representation step is solely a function of facility with the form and content of the information to be represented, while difficulty of the processing step is solely a function of facility with the operation(s) necessary to meet the task requirements. Within this two-step information processing model, form/content variables and task requirements should thus have an additive effect on problem difficulty. To test this prediction, 72 male students in grades …
An Assessment Dependent Upon Technology, F. Gregory Hayden
An Assessment Dependent Upon Technology, F. Gregory Hayden
College of Business: Faculty Publications
"Technology and Economic Dependency: An Institutional Assessment,"' by Thomas De Gregori, deserves serious consideration because it reaches to the heart of a conflict in holistic economic systems analysis and planning. The major issue in the article revolves around divergent views regarding technology. One is that technology should dominate society by being made the primary determinant of policy evaluation criteria. Another view is that technology should be treated as a system entity, albeit a powerful one, which must be evaluated along with others. De Gregori's conclusions are based on the first view.
This comment will consider five aspects of De Gregori's …
Exploring The Cultural Content Of French Feature Films, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
Exploring The Cultural Content Of French Feature Films, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Of the many forms of realia at the disposal of the French teacher, the feature film can be the most engaging and rewarding. Nothing holds students' attention quite like a movie or gives them as vivid an experience of France, short of going abroad. Moreover, movies can furnish glimpses of milieus and personalities the average tourist or student rarely encounters. Instructors have been quick to make use of this potential in the classroom. In literature courses the movie version of a play or novel is compared with the original text. In civilization classes films are used along with supplemental readings …

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …
Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …
