The Spatial Memory Of Clark’S Nutcrackers (Nucifraga Columbiana) In An Analogue Of The Radial Arm Maze, Russel P. Balda, Alan Kamil Jan 1988

The Spatial Memory Of Clark’S Nutcrackers (Nucifraga Columbiana) In An Analogue Of The Radial Arm Maze, Russel P. Balda, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) use spatial memory to recover stored food in the field. In the present experiments, an open-field analogue of the radial arm maze was developed and used to test the ability of nutcrackers to remember spatial locations. The nutcrackers showed high levels of retention after 6 h, but were close to chance levels after a 24-h retention interval. These results suggest that nutcrackers may use different spatial memory systems under different conditions. After long retention intervals, nutcrackers performed more accurately than pigeons tested by other experimenters using similar procedures. This raises the possibility of species …

A Comparative-Ecological Approach To The Study Of Learning, Alan Kamil, John E. Mauldin Jan 1988

A Comparative-Ecological Approach To The Study Of Learning, Alan Kamil, John E. Mauldin

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the effects of a parameter which is present in every learning experiment, but about which we know relatively little--the species being tested. The effects of the species variable have been studied relatively infrequently by animal learning psychologists for at least three reasons. (1) Psychologists have tended to assume that a few general processes will account entirely for most, if not all, of the important phenomena of animal learning in a broad range of species. This assumption has been criticized frequently in recent years (e.g., Seligman, 1970; Seligman & Hager, 1972), but still …

Plans Of Action For Southeast District Issues 1988 - 1992

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration

The Southeast Research and Extension District Alternative Agricultural Opportunities Team met on Thursday, September 15th and reviewed the state plan for the initiative "Increasing Diversity with Alternate Crop and Livestock Enterprises".

The team members present decided that the state plan would meet the planning needs for the Southeast District if it was supplemented with a list of enterprises which have the greatest potential for additional expansion in Southeast Nebraska.

The following alternate crop and livestock enterprises were identified by the committee as having the best opportunity for additional development in the district. In crops; asparagus, melons, and onions were identified …

Miniature Masterworks, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1988

Miniature Masterworks, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Miniature does not merely mean small. When applied to painting, the term "miniature" conveys art historical and psychological meanings of greater import than simple dimensions may indicate. "Miniature Masterworks" offers a diverse group of undersized paintings which are related by virtue of their size, but which reveal larger issues pertinent to the history of twentieth century art.

While artists have used the miniature format throughout the history of art, the tradition of small scale paintings was rather recently reestablished in America, via the French. In part as a reaction to large, Neoclassical paintings commissioned by grand patrons, and depicting ideal …

The Valley Series: Recent Paintings By Keith Jacobshagen, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Keith Jacobshagen has been a member of the Art Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1968. During the past ten years, he has established a national. reputation as a painter of the mid-western landscape. His studies of the plains are thoughtful assessments of familiar views. But, while Jacobshagen's paintings document the particular conditions of weather, light, topography, and their effect on the land, they also transcend the specific to function as metaphors for the human condition: a solitary viewer surveying an expanse of farm land; a transitory, cloudy sky meeting the cultivated fields; the sky as mystery touching the …

Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund Jan 1988

Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Navajo weaving from northeastern Arizona and contiguous areas if the American Southwest is widely recognized for colors and patterns that range from subtle shades to dynamic brilliance, from soft stripes to bold geometries to fanciful pictorials. The apparent diversity in this native textile art, developed over the past three centuries, has defied any unified description of The Navajo Style. While Navajo blankets and rugs may be superficially categorized and classified, put into chronological sequences and evolutionary schemes, when the textiles are viewed synoptically, the delineation of Navajo aesthetics remains a formidable task.

The search for a Navajo style and sense …

Child Day Care Policy Issues In Nebraska, Christine M. Reed Jan 1988

Child Day Care Policy Issues In Nebraska, Christine M. Reed

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter looks at the Nebraska child day care market. A review of the day care arrangements made by working parents for their preschoolers indicates that the majority use home day care - in the home of a relative, friend, neighbor, or family day care home proprietor. This predominance, together with evidence that sixty percent of all day care is informal, unregulated care, suggests three policy strategies for improving the quality of home day care in Nebraska: strengthening and expanding family day care rules; subsidizing quality home day care for the working poor; and expanding specialized training for home day …

Maggie's Sisters: Feminist Readings Of The Mill On The Floss, Oliver Lovesey Jan 1988

Maggie's Sisters: Feminist Readings Of The Mill On The Floss, Oliver Lovesey

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The view that Eliot presented her female characters with only very limited possibilities for self-realization in either marriage or martyrdom, and that Eliot herself '1ived" but did not "write" the "revolution" is one that has dominated the feminist assessment of George Eliot. This tradition regards Eliot as an author who served unintentionally to bolster a reactionary, phallocentric ethos. Further, Eliot is suspect as she has been, particularly since F. R. Leavis gave her prominence in The Great Tradition a part of the accepted literary canon. Nevertheless, as Elaine Showalter, for example, has pointed out in "The Greening of Sister George," …

"There Is Some Splendid Scenery" Womens Responses To The Great Plains Landscape, Julie Roy Jeffrey Jan 1988

"There Is Some Splendid Scenery" Womens Responses To The Great Plains Landscape, Julie Roy Jeffrey

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the decades of exploration and settlement of the trans-Mississippi West, travelers and emigrants encountered a new kind of landscape on the Great Plains. Aside from dramatic geological formations like Courthouse Rock, this landscape lacked many of the visual qualities conventionally associated with natural beauty in the nineteenth century. "It may enchant the imagination for a moment to look over the prairies and plains as far as the eye can reach," Sarah Raymond wrote in her diary in 1865, "still such a view is tedious and monotonous. It can in no wise produce that rapturing delight, that pleasing variety of …

Topics In Question: Active Learning Through Inquiry, Susan Lundvall Brodie

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Why are so many students poor questioners -- why do they lack habits and skills in so fundamental a human activity as inquiry? And why, if it is true that the best teaching capitalizes on students' natural curiosity, do so many students appear to lack the very gift we wish to tap?

Evaluating Structured Group Activities For The Large Class, John Stevenson Jan 1988

Evaluating Structured Group Activities For The Large Class, John Stevenson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

I teach a 500-student introductory course in a large lecture hall with a microphone and an overhead projector. For many students this is a first semester course; often it is taken to fulfill a requirement although there is usually some interest in the subject matter (psychology). I am not a particularly charismatic speaker. From the back of the classroom I look antsize, and my voice rattles, disembodied, from the loudspeakers. Despite this, I want to use class time effectively to give students not only exposure to concepts but practice in using them. I believe memorized factual material will be of …

The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames Jan 1988

The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

It is well known that human children require more care or parental investment than any other primate species (Lancaster and Lancaster 1983). While this dimension of human behavior is well documented in the psychological literature for Euroamerican populations (Babchuck et al. 1985), it has received scant, quantitative attention by anthropologists working among tribal populations (for exceptions see Whiting and Whiting 1975, Katz and Konner 1981, Hurtado et al. 1985, Hewlett, this volume (Chapter 16), Turke, this volume (Chapter 10)). The role of alloparental care (care of non-offspring children) has received even less quantitative attention by social scientists (for a review …

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope Jan 1988

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The recent controversy concerning the use and reference of so-called "generics" in the English language reveals the extent, if not the nature, of the political investment at stake in preserving the myth of generalized reference. Before I offer my data and observations regarding this myth, I wou1d like to emphasize that the arguments supporting generics, especially man, men and mankind, are not substantive, but political, and those who would like to maintain the use of masculine nouns as general references are relying on popular misconceptions, not linguistic data. Of course, if linguistic history provides clues to the outcome of this …

Public And Private Self-Consciousness And Social Phobia, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg Jan 1988

Public And Private Self-Consciousness And Social Phobia, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The relationship between public and private self-consciousness and self-report questionnaires, clinician ratings, and various measures derived from an individualized simulation of an anxiety-provoking situation was examined in a sample of men and women seeking treatment for social phobia. As predicted, public, not private, self-consciousness was generally related to self-report and naive observer ratings of anxiety and to behavioral disruption during the simulation. The predicted relationship between public self-consciousness and how accurately subjects evaluated their performance in the anxiety-provoking situation was marginally supported. Hypotheses regarding the relationship between private self-consciousness and self-reported anxiety during an anxiety-provoking situation, and between private self-consciousness …

The Validity Of The Social Avoidance And Distress Scale And The Fear Of Negative Evaluation Scale With Social Phobic Patients, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Ronald M. Rapee, Monroe A. Bruch Jan 1988

The Validity Of The Social Avoidance And Distress Scale And The Fear Of Negative Evaluation Scale With Social Phobic Patients, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Ronald M. Rapee, Monroe A. Bruch

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Turner, McCanna and Beidel’s (1987) recent evaluation of the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS) and the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (FNE) with anxiety disordered patients concluded that the SADS and FNE lacked discriminant validity and may be inappropriate for subject selection or outcome evaluation in studies of social phobia . This paper raises some concerns with the interpretation of the data presented by Turner et al. (1987) and presents additional data from studies in our laboratories that may qualify their conclusions. It is asserted that (a) the SADS and FNE are not appropriate for diagnostic screening of social …
