The Role Of Educational Developers In Institutional Change: From The Basement Office To The Front Office, Nancy Van Note Chism Jan 1998

The Role Of Educational Developers In Institutional Change: From The Basement Office To The Front Office, Nancy Van Note Chism

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Educational developers can play a crucial role in helping colleges and universities respond to change. Among the roles they can play are researcher, assessment resource, friendly critic, messenger, translator, and coach. To perform these roles, developers need certain characteristics and special knowledge bases as well as enabling conditions within their environment. The current state of higher education may be calling for a paradigm shift in educational development as well.

Supporting Faculty Development In An Era Of Change, Carol Fulton, Barbara L. Licklider Jan 1998

Supporting Faculty Development In An Era Of Change, Carol Fulton, Barbara L. Licklider

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A paradigm shift is underway in higher education. Realizing the hoped-for gains of new student-centered approaches will require significantly different approaches to faculty development. This paper describes one such approach to faculty development and how it is currently being used to improve the learning and teaching experience in the College of Engineering at a land grant institution in the Midwest. Considerations for the widespread application of this approach are also offered.

Becoming A Multicultural Faculty Developer: Reflections From The Field, Diana Kardia Jan 1998

Becoming A Multicultural Faculty Developer: Reflections From The Field, Diana Kardia

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

There has been a significant amount of activity in the area of multicultural faculty development; yet, this is an area where our profession continues to require growth and attention. Many faculty development practitioners are in a unique position to work with multicultural issues but need additional knowledge, strategies, and skills to do this work well. By attending to the specific challenges and areas of expansion needed for faculty developers to work with diverse institutions, we can increase the effectiveness of our work while continuing to actualize the potential of our profession.

Faculty Development In Technology Applications To University Instruction: An Evaluation, Margie K. Kitano, Bernard J. Dodge, Patrick J. Harrison, Rena B. Lewis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Progress in integrating new technologies into higher education classrooms has been slow despite emerging evidence on benefits for students when technologies are applied in ways that support teaching and learning. This article describes a program used by a college of education to support faculty applications of technology in instruction and reports results of a formal evaluation following the first year of implementation. The program provided intensive training and follow-up support to a heterogeneous cohort of 14 faculty members and was designed to enhance their ability to integrate technology into their teaching, use a new "smart" classroom facility, and/or develop products …

Polar Field Tent Shelters And Well-Being Of Users, James Potter, X. Winston Yan, Nathan S. Krug, Karl C. Kuivinen, Marijane E. England Jan 1998

Polar Field Tent Shelters And Well-Being Of Users, James Potter, X. Winston Yan, Nathan S. Krug, Karl C. Kuivinen, Marijane E. England

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Polar research teams often spend extended periods of time away from base stations, living and working in remote field camps of portable tent shelters. This article reports on a study of the design and use of portable field tent shelters being deployed in Antarctica and other circumpolar areas. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the shelters on health and well-being of their users from an environment-behavior perspective. Preliminary analysis indicates that although the design and use of field tent shelters were generally satisfactory, there are areas in which the shelters had some adverse bearing on …

G98-1345 Family Asset Mapping, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1998

G98-1345 Family Asset Mapping, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

All families have assets. Strengthening them is critical for a healthy family life. This NebGuide presents several opportunities for doing that.

The Family Relationship Bank Account

Successful family living requires two bank accounts: a financial account, which allows the purchase of goods and services, and a relationship account, which promotes sustainability, bonding and togetherness. When assets are many and the account balance is large, there is enough "money" to meet the relational demands that exist between couples, the family demands of raising children and the social demands of living in a community. At other times, when withdrawals are high, or …

Foster Parents And Aids: Considering The Best Interests Of A Foster Child In In Re Interest Of John T., 4 Neb. Ct. App. 79, 538 N.W.2d 761 (1995), Jenny L. Plager

Nebraska Law Review

This Note first presents the factual background of In re Interest of John T., as well as the ultimate outcome of the situation, which is not evident in the court of appeals opinion itself. Next, this Note presents the legal framework upon which the case can be analyzed. This Note then analyzes the Nebraska Court of Appeal’s opinion in John T., beginning with an analysis of the differences in the rights of biological families as compared to the rights of foster and adoptive families. The meaning of the best interests of the child standard is then examined. The …

Evaluating Stress In Calves Weaned At Three Different Ages, Andrea Bueno, Todd Cappel, Chuck Story, Richard J. Rasby, Edd Clemens, Mark Dragastin Jan 1998

Evaluating Stress In Calves Weaned At Three Different Ages, Andrea Bueno, Todd Cappel, Chuck Story, Richard J. Rasby, Edd Clemens, Mark Dragastin

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of weaning calves at 150, 210 and 270 days of age (i.e. August, October and December, respectively). A total of 75 Angus x MARC II heifers calves were used in this study. Heifers were bled on the day of weaning and again at 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after weaning. Blood was analyzed for differential WBC, cortisol, T3 and glucose. Weight changes were recorded. The data suggests October weaned calves (210 days) had both greater blood cortisol and glucose at days 7, 14 and 28 post-weaning and greater weight gains when …

Generations Of Families: A Teaching Project And Photograph Exhibition, Carolyn P. Edwards, Kay Springate

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

"Generations of Families" was a collaborative project involving university and community partners. University of Kentucky students worked with public and private local agencies, leaders, and citizens to collect, catalog, label, and display treasured family photographs of local citizens. The final product consisted of five separate displays totaling hundreds of framed or mounted photographs. The project supported the development of cross-cultural competence and professional skills by Family and Consumer Sciences students. The project achieved significant impact, as measured by community response, exit interviews, and analysis of student journals.

Hispanic Women In Leadership: Opportunities, Barriers, And Strategies, Kaye Lynn Peery, Marilyn Grady Jan 1998

Hispanic Women In Leadership: Opportunities, Barriers, And Strategies, Kaye Lynn Peery, Marilyn Grady

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Research in leadership that focuses on gender and ethnicity issues provides us with little practical information for women, The few studies that do exist point to gender and race discrimination (Doughty, 1980; Marcias, ]994; Gorena, 1996), Researchers must move beyond the documentation of negative past and present conditions for women and minorities and begin to look at ways these individuals can achieve equality. Additional"cultural studies" will aid in the task of analyzing the power relations that occur in all social settings. If we can discover the source of women's support, we can increase this support for others. By examining the …

Pathways To Administrative Positions, Marilyn Grady, Bernita Krumm, Kaye Lynn Peery Jan 1998

Pathways To Administrative Positions, Marilyn Grady, Bernita Krumm, Kaye Lynn Peery

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Preparing for the job search, acquiring administrative skills, being part of a network, being in the "right place at the right time," and being the most qualified for a position are all pathways to administrative positions.

Throughout the United States, the majority of students enrolled in educational administration preparation programs are women. The struggle by women to gain leadership positions continues in the 1990s. A survey conducted by The Executive Educator and Xavier University shows that women are best represented among the ranks of elementary school principals (39.7%), followed by junior high/middle school principals (20.5%), and high school principals (12.1 …

Preface: Animal Cognition In Nature, Russell P. Balda, Irene M. Pepperberg, Alan Kamil Jan 1998

Preface: Animal Cognition In Nature, Russell P. Balda, Irene M. Pepperberg, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

This volume, Animal Cognition in Nature, is the result of an ongoing synthesis of several ideas that were considered revolutionary, if not heretical, in the 1960s. At that time, animal behavior, whether studied in field or laboratory, by ethologists or psychologists, was generally interpreted as the result of simple processes relating specific stimuli to specific behaviors. Examples from that time include S–R models, sign stimuli, IRMs, etc. Theoretical constructs such as mental representations, memory or attention were avoided. Today, students of animal behavior work in an entirely different atmosphere. This is the result of several developments.

One of these developments …

The Effect Of Background Cuing On Prey Detection, Henry Kono, Pamela J. Reid, Alan Kamil Jan 1998

The Effect Of Background Cuing On Prey Detection, Henry Kono, Pamela J. Reid, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Studies of prey detection have typically focused on how search image affects the capture of cryptic items. This study also considers how background vegetation influences cryptic prey detection. Blue jays, Cyanocitta cristata, searched digitized images for two Catocala moths: C. ilia, which is cryptic on oak, and C. relicta, which is cryptic on birch. Some images contained moths while others did not. The ability of blue jays to detect prey during repeated presentations of one prey type within a session was compared with their performance during randomly alternating presentations of both prey types within a session to …

Martineau In Current Introductory Textbooks: An Empirical Survey, Michael R. Hill Jan 1998

Martineau In Current Introductory Textbooks: An Empirical Survey, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Harriet Martineau is now making significant appearances in introductory textbooks used in the u.s. and Canada. There was a time, not so long ago, when only the Hess, Markson, and Stein "intro text" made note of Harriet Martineau. Although ample room for progress remains, the situation is improving.

I made a comprehensive effort, during the 1997 meetings of the American Sociological Association in Toronto, Canada, to survey all introductory sociology textbooks that were prominently displayed by publishers in their booths in the Sheraton Exhibition Hall. Some ninety publishers displayed textbooks, journals, and sociological monographs. Of forty-three works clearly identifiable and …

Coercive Sexual Strategies, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck Jan 1998

Coercive Sexual Strategies, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study examines the use of coercive sexual strategies by men and the outcomes of these behaviors for women. Using a sample of 541 college undergraduates, data were gathered from men on their use of three types of coercive sexual strategies and from women on their experiences with these same forms of behaviors. For women, there is a positive association between being sexually active, having sexually permissive attitudes, drinking alcohol and being a victim of certain types of sexual coercive strategies. For men, sexually permissive attitudes and attitudes toward rape are found to be significant predictors of their use of …

Edward Alsworth Ross In Chicago, Michael R. Hill Jan 1998

Edward Alsworth Ross In Chicago, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

THE NAMES “Edward A. Ross” and “Chicago sociology” are not usually linked today in sociological accounts of the discipline, but the connections are nonetheless tangible. Ross’s work at Stanford, Nebraska, and Wisconsin is, perhaps, better known (Hertzler 1951; Hill forthcoming; Hinkle 1980; Howard 1988; Keith 1988; Weinberg 1972) and has overshadowed Ross’ ties to Chicago. The “symposium” presented below in this issue of SOCIOLOGICAL ORIGINS celebrates Ross’ place in Chicago sociology.

The record shows that Ross taught briefly in 1896 as a Visiting Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago, lectured informally to the University of Chicago Sociological Club, …

What Is Learned About Nontarget Items In Simple Visual Search?, John H. Flowers, Karen L. Smith Jan 1998

What Is Learned About Nontarget Items In Simple Visual Search?, John H. Flowers, Karen L. Smith

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Human sensitivity to correlational structure between nontargets and likelihood of target presence in a visual letter-search task were studied in two experiments. In each of these experiments, the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information was altered in the final trial block was compared with the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information did not change. When stimulus strings were presented individually on a computer screen and subjects were required to make a yes–no decision about target presence (Experiment 1), the change in nontarget structure resulted in increased reaction times for target-absent trials. When subjects searched simultaneously for …

Statements Of Teaching Philosophy, Gail E. Goodyear, Douglas Allchin

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Well-defined teaching philosophy is essential to creating and maintaining a campus culture supportive of teaching. Presented in this paper are reasons for statements of teaching philosophy as well as descriptions of how the statements are beneficial to students, faculty, and university administrations. Described are ways of creating a statement of teaching philosophy and dimensions that may be included in such statements. This article begins a discussion of roles, composition, and evaluation of statements of teaching philosophy.

Holistic Faculty Development: Supporting Personal, Professional, And Organizational Well-Being, Glenda T. Hubbard, Sally S. Atkins, Kathleen T. Brinko Jan 1998

Holistic Faculty Development: Supporting Personal, Professional, And Organizational Well-Being, Glenda T. Hubbard, Sally S. Atkins, Kathleen T. Brinko

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In recent years, higher education has begun to realize the great influence that faculty quality of life has on student learning and on overall institutional effectiveness. This article examines the interactive effect of personal, professional, and organizational well-being and describes a center that integrates four kinds of services-faculty development, employee assistance, health promotion, and organizational development-that work both separately and collaboratively. The result is a synergistic organization that is able to tackle complex institutional problems that could not be addressed by any one program alone.

Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki Jan 1998

Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The fortunes of faculty development centers rise and fall on the waves of change that roll through postsecondary education on a regular basis. These waves can swamp us, or we can ride their crest. This article points out some of the waves the author sees now and in the immediate future and how we can benefit from them. She ends with a caution about improving our chances of survival through our own efforts rather than waiting for someone else to draw us along.

Review Of Settling The Canadian-American West, 1890- 1915: Pioneer Adaptation And Community Building By John W. Bennett And Seena B. Kohl, Catherine Cavanaugh Jan 1998

Review Of Settling The Canadian-American West, 1890- 1915: Pioneer Adaptation And Community Building By John W. Bennett And Seena B. Kohl, Catherine Cavanaugh

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Settling the Canadian-American West, anthropologists John W. Bennett and Seena B. Kohl focus on the common cultural legacy of what they describe as the "Canadian-American West Heartland"-an area roughly conforming to Paul Sharp's "Whoop-up Country" in southeastern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan, and the northern "Montana Hi-Line." The authors' question concerning the enduring influences of the frontier is an important one, and there are historiographical reasons for uniting the region. Unfortunately, this study ultimately disappoints.

The book's title is misleading since the study itself is less a binational approach to settlement than an exploration of the shared heritage of a …

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay Jan 1998

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, became one of the great representative mythological figures of the American West in his own lifetime and remains so today, well over a hundred years after his death. Some decades ago Joseph G. Rosa wrote the definitive biography of the famous gunfighter and peace officer. His present book, not so much a biography as an examination of the myths that have grown up around the man, compares the different facets of the legendary Hickok with the facts so far as they are known.

Hickok first gained fame for his exploits as a …

A Pernicious Problem: The Absence Of Women From Administrative Roles, Marilyn Grady, Barbara Lacost, Frederick C. Wendel, Bernita Krumm Jan 1998

A Pernicious Problem: The Absence Of Women From Administrative Roles, Marilyn Grady, Barbara Lacost, Frederick C. Wendel, Bernita Krumm

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

In 1972 Title IX, the vaccine against gender inequity, was unveiled. Title IX is a federal law making sex discrimination in schools illegal. Under Title IX, sex bias is outlawed in school athletics, career counseling, medical services, financial aid, admission practices, and the treatment of students. In 1974, Congress passed the Women's Educational Equity Act to fund research, materials, and training to help schools eliminate gender bias. In 1978, Congress broadened the Civil Rights Act to include educational services to eliminate gender bias. Under the redesigned civil rights legislation, ten sex desegregation assistance centers were created to assist teachers, parents, …

Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera 1859–1895, J. Agustín Pastén B. Dec 1997

Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera 1859–1895, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Manual Gutiérrez Nájera, one of Mexico's best-known writers of the 19th century, has traditionally been considered one of four precursors of the Modernist period of Spanish American literature (1875–1925). It was customarily believed that the genesis of Modernismo lay in innovations in poetry, thus it was Nájera's poetic production that received the attention of the critics for a long time. In the past few years, however, after careful examination of the modernist writers' prose works, scholars have discovered not only that the first signs of Modernismo are to be found in prose, but that Nájera's major contribution to the modernist …
