Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins
Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins
Alan Tomkins Publications
In August 1998 a comprehensive national survey added to the growing mass of information on how the public perceives the state courts. The “Perceptions of the U.S. Justice System,” commissioned by the American Bar Association, relied on telephone interviews of 1,000 American adults selected at random. The respondents were asked for their opinions about “the justice system,” lawyers, judges, law enforcement and the courts. The findings from the ABA survey were optimistic relative to most of the previous surveys. Public confidence in the courts relative to other major institutions seemed higher, and experience with courts appeared to promote higher rather …

Facilitating And Disinhibiting Prosocial Behaviors: The Nonlinear Interaction Of Trait Perspective Taking And Trait Personal Distress On Volunteering, Gustavo Carlo, James B. Allen, Dion C. Buhman
Facilitating And Disinhibiting Prosocial Behaviors: The Nonlinear Interaction Of Trait Perspective Taking And Trait Personal Distress On Volunteering, Gustavo Carlo, James B. Allen, Dion C. Buhman
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Prior theorists and researchers have suggested that multiplicative models of prosocial behavior may account for weak and inconsistent relations between traits and prosocial behaviors. This study examined the multiplicative relations of trait personal distress, trait sympathy, and trait perspective taking on prosocial behaviors. Nonlinear, 2-way interactions were hypothesized, such that as trait personal distress decreased from moderate to low levels, and trait perspective taking or trait sympathy increased, volunteering would increase. One hundred and eighty-two undergraduate students completed a battery of trait measures that included trait perspective taking, trait sympathy, and trait personal distress. Approximately 6 weeks later, the students …
Introduction To International Perspectives On Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Alan Tomkins, David Carson
Introduction To International Perspectives On Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Alan Tomkins, David Carson
Alan Tomkins Publications
Therapeutic Jurisprudence (TJ), a concept first conceived by law professors David Wexler (University of Puerto Rico and University of Arizona) and Bruce Winick (University of Miami) only a little more than a decade ago, has emerged as the leading conceptual perspective in the mental health law field. Indeed, a LEXIS search reveals well over 150 articles on, or citing to, therapeutic jurisprudence in American law review publications in the past decade (terms used were “therapeutic w/5 jurisprudence w/25 Wexler or Winick”).
Although initially a notion that provided an alternative to the traditional “rights” approach to thinking about mental health law …
Theodor Lebrun And Industrial Comedy Space In Nineteenth Century Berlin, William Grange
Theodor Lebrun And Industrial Comedy Space In Nineteenth Century Berlin, William Grange
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
The formation of the German Reich in 1871 was an occasion of unprecedented economic growth, accompanied by an equally conspicuous increase of both theatre construction and audience growth. One important aesthetic result, to paraphrase Hélène Cixous by way of Jacques Lacan, was "re-locating and un-making" the comic self in an alternative space of the Wilhelminian “Imaginary.” The victorious conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 and the collection of billions in war reparations from the vanquished French allowed the German economy between 1871 and 1890 to surpass that of France and soon thereafter that of Great Britain. The erstwhile Prussian …
Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds
Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds
French Language and Literature Papers
L’Education sentimentale may be construed as an historical novel at least insofar as it addresses questions of social change and enduring value as they are related to those of history and individual memory. As in Balzac and later in Proust, what is true for the individual applies to society. There is an especially Flaubertian understanding of movement in society and movement across time that remains tied more to demands of diegetic coherence than to laws of historical necessity, however. Singulative narration as it appears in the novel is a kind of smoke screen hiding a more pervasive iteration whereby the …
Taste Quality And Extinction Of A Conditioned Taste Aversion In Rats, Rick A. Bevins, Heather C. Jensen, Todd S. Hinze, Joyce Besheer
Taste Quality And Extinction Of A Conditioned Taste Aversion In Rats, Rick A. Bevins, Heather C. Jensen, Todd S. Hinze, Joyce Besheer
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Rats (Rattus norvegicus) that received a taste cue (saccharin, saline, quinine, or sucrose) paired with a lithium chloride (LiCl) injection displayed a robust decrease in consumption of that taste, relative to controls that had the taste unpaired with LiCl. Consumption of the paired taste increased with each nonreinforced presentation (i.e., extinction). After asymptotic extinction, rats that had had a 0.1% saccharin cue paired with LiCl consumed less of the saccharin solution than did controls. A similar data pattern was observed with a 10% sucrose solution. These results are consistent with the view that some aspect of the excitatory …

Low-Income Fathers’ And Mothers’ Perceptions Of The Father Role: A Qualitative Study In Four Early Head Start Communities, Jean Ann Summers, Helen Raikes, James Butler, Paul Spicer, Barbara Pan, Sarah Shaw, Mark Langager, Carol Mcallister, Monique K. Johnson
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A qualitative inquiry in four Early Head Start Research sites explored the question of how low-income mothers and fathers view the role of fathers in their families. Role perceptions were gathered from a total of 56 parents of infants and toddlers across the four sites, using multiple data collection methods that included focus groups, open-ended interviews, and one case study. The data were analyzed to identify common themes across sites. The participants identified roles that included: providing financial support, “being there,” care giving, outings and play, teaching and discipline, providing love, and protection. Implications of these qualitative findings are discussed …

Double Discounting: The Effects Of Comparative Negligence On Mock Juror Decision Making, Douglas J. Zickafoosel, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Two experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of comparative negligence on damage awards. Participants awarded damages for a mock medical malpractice case in which the level of the plaintiff’s negligence was varied. Both experiments showed that damage awards were doubly discounted for partially negligent plaintiffs. Experiment 1 also found that the responses of college students did not differ from those of people who had been called for jury duty. Experiment 2 examined four components of the damage award and showed that the reduction due to the level of the plaintiff’s negligence occurred only in damages for bodily harm. Implications …

Communication Characteristics Of Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Laura Jean Ball
Communication Characteristics Of Children With Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Laura Jean Ball
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Speech-language pathology researchers have pursued a strategy to identify children with distinct DAS characteristics in an effort to study the characteristics, possible cause(s), and interventions for this disorder. Increasingly, reports indicate that children with suspected DAS experience a range of speech, language, social interaction, behavioral, and academic disabilities. Investigators in DAS continue to recommend intervention strategies that focus primarily on motor speech impairments, although it is clear that few children with a distinct version of DAS exist.
Evaluations of communication skills were obtained from 36 children identified with suspected DAS for this research project. Hierarchical cluster analysis was completed on …
Interparental Conflict And Child And Adolescent Aggression: An Examination Of Overt And Relational Aggression, Stacey T. Mizokawa
Interparental Conflict And Child And Adolescent Aggression: An Examination Of Overt And Relational Aggression, Stacey T. Mizokawa
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The relationship between interparentaI conflict and overt aggression has been a consistent finding for males, but not for females. As a result. females have been thought to be less affected by parental disputes. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether parental conflict could predict aggression in males and females if aggression is operationalized to include both the overt type that is common among males and the relational type that is more common in females. Participants were 102 fifth- (37 males; 65 females). 137 eighth- (54 males; 83 females). and 110 eleventh-graders (37 males; 73 females) and their parents. …

A Statewide Survey Of Special Education Administrators And School Psychologists Regarding Functional Behavioral Assessment, J. Ron Nelson, Maura L. Roberts, Robert B. Rutherford Jr., Sarup R. Mathur, Lisa A. Aaroe
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
The 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandate that schools evaluate, through the process of a functional behavioral assessment, those students with disabilities who are exhibiting significant behavior problems which may lead to suspension and expulsion. We conducted a statewide survey of special education administrators and school psychologists to examine their views of the relative effectiveness, usability, suitability, and practicability of functional behavioral assessment procedures for two types of problem behaviors (i.e., low-level chronic or low frequency unique problem behaviors). The results suggest that special education administrators and school psychologists are generally supportive of the use …
Meaning And Measurement: Reconceptualizing Measures Of The Division Of Household Labor, Joan E. Twiggs, Julia Mcquillan, Myra Marx Feree
Meaning And Measurement: Reconceptualizing Measures Of The Division Of Household Labor, Joan E. Twiggs, Julia Mcquillan, Myra Marx Feree
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This article argues that task-specific measures of the division of household labor form a gender hierarchy that reflects dimensions of meaning in the organization of household work. We contrast these measures to the commonly used time-share and Likert scale measures, which assume all tasks are interchangeable. Using Guttman scaling, we test the unidimensionality of this task hierarchy. Using odds ratios, we measure relationships between specific tasks, and using logistic regression, we see differences in correlates of husbands’ participation by task and interrelationships among tasks that persist, controlling for gender ideology and socioeconomic factors. This work should encourage development of measures …
Against Arbitrariness: Architectural Signification In The Age Of Globalization, Rumiko Handa
Against Arbitrariness: Architectural Signification In The Age Of Globalization, Rumiko Handa
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
The theory of arbitrary signification, predominant during the last half century, considers architecture’s intrinsic properties as having little to do with its meaning. Consequently, architecture’s significance is not based on itself but assigned externally. In the age of globalization, such an assignment is often ineffective. This paper will: (1) examine the post-WWII debates between the theories of arbitrary and natural signification; (2) relate these theories to more philosophical, historicist vs. normative positions; (3) discuss the implications concerning conservation of culture, legitimacy of interpretation, and fake authenticity in construction; (4) and examine some architectural works that have brought forth natural signification …

Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal
Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mirroring a cultural shift that brought the American middle class from the Victorian era into the modern era, women's intercollegiate sports encountered stiff resistance from the two overlapping social groups. Mabel Lee, a woman physical educator, brought firmly held Victorian beliefs about feminine propriety and moderation to the University of Nebraska when she was hired as the head of the women's physical education department in 1924. Louise Pound, an English professor at the University, had for years excelled in highly competitive athletics as a member of the new modern middle class. Pound flouted Victorian restraints and refused to enter the …
A Town Of The Mind" Margaret Laurence's Mythical Microcosm Ofmanawaka, Nora Foster Stovel
A Town Of The Mind" Margaret Laurence's Mythical Microcosm Ofmanawaka, Nora Foster Stovel
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This passage introduces "Where the World Began," the concluding piece in Margaret Laurence's 1976 collection of travel essays, Heart of a Stranger, which functions as an autobiography, charting her life journey. Laurence wrote a preface to this collection that exists in manuscript at McMaster University, but which was never published-unfortunately, because it illuminates the autobiographical import of the essays-perhaps because the pattern of her life was clear to her by the time she wrote it in 1976: "I saw, somewhat to my surprise, that they are all, in one way or another, travel articles. And by travel, I mean …
