Prairie Paths, Mouse Highways And Night Time Traffic, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen Jul 1989

Prairie Paths, Mouse Highways And Night Time Traffic, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Not long ago we developed a convenient, inexpensive, non-harmful way to learn about the secret lives of small nocturnal mammals. The technique allows us to follow trails made by rodents and to find where they have foraged, what they have eaten, and where they have their burrows. This method involves the use of a fine, nontoxic powder that fluoresces under black light. After setting traps and capturing the animals alive, we gently dust them in the fluorescent powder. The powder, used to make fluorescent paint, comes in different colors. It is especially important that the powder is non-toxic because killing …

High School Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Subject Matter Needs In Home Economics Curriculum, Dixie J. Torres May 1989

High School Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Subject Matter Needs In Home Economics Curriculum, Dixie J. Torres

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research was to identify subject matter areas and specific concepts in home economics which senior high school home economics students consider important. Comparisons were first made between students' perceptions and the perceptions of parents, both economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged. In addition, comparisons were made between students' perceptions of subject matter and specific concepts needed and what home economics teachers perceive is emphasized in their teaching. Questionnaires were mailed to home economics teachers in 22 schools from the six class sizes of schools in economically depressed Nebraska counties. The questionnaire was completed by 174 home economics …

Arousal And Physiological Toughness: Implications For Mental And Physical Health, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1989

Arousal And Physiological Toughness: Implications For Mental And Physical Health, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

From W. B. Cannon’s identification of adrenaline with “fight or flight” to modern views of stress, negative views of peripheral physiological arousal predominate. Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) arousal is associated with anxiety, neuroticism, the Type A personality, cardiovascular disease, and immune system suppression; illness susceptibility is associated with life events requiring adjustments. “Stress control” has become almost synonymous with arousal reduction. A contrary positive view of peripheral arousal follows from studies of subjects exposed to intermittent stressors. Such exposure leads to low SNS arousal base rates, but to strong and responsive challenge- or stress-induced SNS-adrenal-medullary arousal, with resistance to brain …

Impairment Of Melibiose Utilization In Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants, Raul G. Barletta, Roy Curtiss Iii Mar 1989

Impairment Of Melibiose Utilization In Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants, Raul G. Barletta, Roy Curtiss Iii

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Streptococcus mutans serotype c gtfA gene encodes a 55-kilodalton sucrose-hydrolyzing enzyme. Analysis of S. mutans gtfA mutants revealed that the mutant strains were specifically impaired in the ability to use melibiose as a sole carbon source. S. mutans gafA mutant strains synthesized less α-galactosidase activity inducible by raffinose than wild-type strains. Melibiose (an inducer in wild-type strains) failed to induce significant levels of a-galactosidase in the mutant strains. We hypothesize that melibiose use by . mutans requires the interaction of the GtfA enzyme, or another gene product under the control of the gtfA promoter, with other gene product(s) involved …

Black-Footed Ferret Recovery, Dean E. Biggins, Ronald A. Crew Feb 1989

Black-Footed Ferret Recovery, Dean E. Biggins, Ronald A. Crew

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The captive population of black-footed ferrets increased from 24 to 58 animals in 1988, and was split to provide the species added protection against extinction. Experimental reintroductions may begin in 1991. In some areas, "experimental population" designations as authorized under Section 10 (j) of the Endangered Species Act may be used to provide wider management latitude. The Black-footed Ferret Interstate Coordinating Committee oversees much of the work related to reintroduction. Expanded effort to locate wild ferrets now includes a $10,000 reward offer. Research focuses on captive breeding, reintroduction techniques, disease, and habitat. A new Recovery Plan was approved in 1988.

Urban Nuisance Wildlife Problems In Arizona, Rebecca L. Wright, Leonard L. Ordway

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Arizona has experienced an increase in urbanization of wildlife habitat, which has led to an urban nuisance wildlife problem. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is working to lessen the problem through public education, information packets and use of private pest control companies to remove wildlife for a fee.

Management Problems Encountered With Livestock Guarding Dogs On The University Of California, Hopland Field Station, Robert M. Timm, Robert H. Schmidtz

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Guard dogs are being promoted and utilized as effective predator damage control tools under a variety of livestock management conditions. We report our experience over 1 1/2 years with 5 dogs, primarily Anatolian shepherd and Akbash dog breeds. We discuss a number of behavioral and management problems we have encountered, some of which have not previously been reported in the literature. These include chasing vehicles and wildlife, predation on deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus), and incompatibility of dogs with other predator damage control methods.

Diversity Of Coprophagous Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) In Grazed Versus Ungrazed Sandhills Prairie In Western Nebraska, Mary Liz Jameson Feb 1989

Diversity Of Coprophagous Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) In Grazed Versus Ungrazed Sandhills Prairie In Western Nebraska, Mary Liz Jameson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Baited pitfall traps were used to compare the dung-feeding Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) of a grazed versus an ungrazed sandhills prairie in western Nebraska. Traps yielded 14,832 coprophagous Scarabaeidae over a 4-week sampling period in 1987. Canthon ebenus (Say), C. pilurarius (L.), Onthophagous hecate Panzer, and O. pennsylvanicus Harold were the dominant species on both prairies. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index indicated that diversity was slightly higher on the grazed site, whereas the Margalef diversity index showed the diversities to be nearly the same. Activity and foraging by scarabs (as measured by trapping success) were found to be most closely correlated with temperature …

Biochemical And Morphological Characteristics In Maturing Achenes From Purple-Hulled And Oilseed Sunflower Cultivars, Roger W. Bullard, Paul P. Woronecki, Richard A. Dolbeer, J. Russell Mason Jan 1989

Biochemical And Morphological Characteristics In Maturing Achenes From Purple-Hulled And Oilseed Sunflower Cultivars, Roger W. Bullard, Paul P. Woronecki, Richard A. Dolbeer, J. Russell Mason

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The blackbird feeding preference for sunflower oilseed variety Jacques Discovery (JD) over purple-hulled Neagra de Cluj (NdC) has been attributed to anthocyanin. To test this hypothesis, we compared biochemical and morphological properties in the achene over the maturation period. Comparisons included total phenols, anthocyanin, tannin, fat/oil, protein, nonstructural sugars, and phytomelanin contents, as well as mass properties and moisture content. Only three differences were observed: (1) Hull mass was significantly higher for NdC than JD. (2) Anthocyanins were synthesized by NdC only. (3) JD was higher in oil content. Each of these factors may play a role in reduced preferences …

G89-915 Testing Livestock Feeds For Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Sheep And Horses, Rick Grant, Bruce Anderson, Richard J. Rasby, Terry L. Mader

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides tips on how to determine feeds you should analyze and nutrients to measure. It tells how to interpret the results of feed analysis.

Why Test Feeds?

Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein.

Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. …

G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson Jan 1989

G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Buying meat by the serving rather than by the pound can save you money. Determining cost per serving is covered here.

Smart shoppers use cost per serving rather than price per pound in making meat selection decisions. Price per pound can be misleading because all cuts will not yield the same number of servings per pound.

Although some boneless cuts may cost more on a per pound basis, they may be more economical due to less waste. The amount of bone and waste fat determines the number of servings of cooked meat a cut will yield. Cost of the edible …

G89-944 Home Freezing Of Cooked And Prepared Foods, Katharine P. Riddle, Anne Mae Brenner Jan 1989

G89-944 Home Freezing Of Cooked And Prepared Foods, Katharine P. Riddle, Anne Mae Brenner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Preparing food ahead of time and freezing it can save time, energy and money. Frozen cooked foods also add variety to your menu, offer quick meals for unexpected company and provide nutritious choices for busy days.

When you are preparing a main dish, it takes only a little more effort and time to make enough for several meals. You can freeze all of the prepared food in meal size packages, or serve part of the food immediately and freeze the rest.

It is more economical to make your own supply of prepared dishes than to purchase commercially prepared foods.

Long-Term Grass Dynamics Within A Mixed-Grass Prairie, Brian S. Mihlbacher, Fred E. Smeins, Gerald W. Thomas, Charles A. Taylor Jan 1989

Long-Term Grass Dynamics Within A Mixed-Grass Prairie, Brian S. Mihlbacher, Fred E. Smeins, Gerald W. Thomas, Charles A. Taylor

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Western portions of the Edwards Plateau are dominated by a grass mosaic which consists of a rhizomatous midgrass, tobosagrass [Hilaria mutica (Buckl.) Benth.], and two stoloniferous short grasses, common curlymesquite [Hilaria belangeri (Steud.) Nash] and buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.]. Permanent 0.3 m x 6 m belt transects were established on three major soil series (Tobosa, Ozona. Valera) across several grazing treatments on the Texas Range Station near Barnhart, Texas, and the distribution of perennial grasses was mapped in 1951 (pre-drought), 1953 (drought), 1957 (post-drought), and 1987. Cover showed no consistent trends in relation to grazing. Total …

The Future Of A Prolific Variant Of Eastern Gamagrass, Laura Jackson, Chet Dewald Jan 1989

The Future Of A Prolific Variant Of Eastern Gamagrass, Laura Jackson, Chet Dewald

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Eastern gamagrass [Tripsacum dactyloides (L.) L.] is currently being selected for higher forage yield. A prolific variant which can produce up to 20 times the number and 3 times the weight of seeds of a normal plant was found in a wild population and is now instrumental in the breeding program. Could this prolific type spread in wild populations? Vegetative vigor of mature plants was assessed by clipping plants to a 7 cm height every two weeks throughout the growing season. The two types did not differ in dry weight of regrowth, suggesting that they tolerate defoliation equally. Seed …

Estimates Of Macroinvertebrate Biomass In Lake Michigan, Thomas F. Nalepa Jan 1989

Estimates Of Macroinvertebrate Biomass In Lake Michigan, Thomas F. Nalepa

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

To obtain updated, more accurate estimates of macroinvertebrate standing stocks in Lake Michigan, benthic biomass (ash-free dry weight) was determined at 40 stations in the southern end of the lake in 1980 and 1981. Biomass generally increased as sampling depth increased from 16 to 30 m, peaked at depths of 30-40 m, and then declined at depths greater than 40 m. Mean total biomass at the 16-30 m, 31-50 m, 51-90, and> 90 m depth intervals was 4.9, 7.8, 4.2, and 1.9 g m-2, respectively. Oligochaetes (46%) and Pontoporeia hoyi (44%) accounted for most of the biomass at …

G89-935 Planning For Healthy Eating (Revised November 1994), Darlene Martin, Harriet Kohn, Charlotte Kern

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Dietary recommendations and tips for healthy eating are included to help reduce the risk of certain diseases.

What is healthy eating? It's eating the types and amounts of foods that promote the best possible health for you within the limits of your environmental and genetic makeup. Healthy eating can help you maintain a desirable weight. It helps reduce the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, and obesity.

As we do more scientific studies on healthy eating, the recommendations may be refined. It pays to be alert to new, well-documented information about what constitutes healthy eating.
