Developing Approaches To Reduce Wildlife Damage To Forest Resources, Dale L. Nolte
Developing Approaches To Reduce Wildlife Damage To Forest Resources, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wildlife impacts on forest resources can be extensive. Although damage is generally considered in terms of reduced productivity or delayed harvest cycles, attempts to replace trees after a harvest or a fire can fail because of foraging wildlife. Wildlife, particularly mammalian herbivores, can impede attempts to establish native plants to increase forest diversity, improve riparian areas, re-vegetate disturbed sites, restore endangered or threatened plants, or to create or improve habitat for wildlife. Foraging wildlife can be extremely detrimental if animals browse on plants before seedlings are well established, or if foraging is continuous or intense. Native plant projects are often …

Managing Ungulates To Protect Trees, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
ig game species, such as elk and deer, inflict the most widespread form of damage to forest resources. Elk may trample or pull seedlings without well-established root systems out of the ground. Browsing elk often splinter woody stems. During the spring, the stems may be stripped of bark below where they break the stem. Deer damage inflicted on seedlings is similar to elk damage. Woody stems are often splintered and the bark is stripped from twigs. New buds are generally clipped back to the previous year’s growth. Deer do not pull seedlings as frequently as elk and their damage rarely …
Bears Prefer Trees In The Spring, Dale L. Nolte
Bears Prefer Trees In The Spring, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
As they emerge from their winter den, bears need an energy source and food is relatively scarce. Concurrently, trees are breaking dormancy and starting to generate carbohydrates. Consequently, bears commonly girdle Douglas-fir trees during the spring to feed on the available carbohydrates. Bears strip bark from a tree with their claws, then feed on the sapwood by scraping it from the heartwood with their teeth. Scattered remnants of bark strewn at the base of a tree and vertical tooth marks are characteristic indicators of bear activity. Most frequently bears forage on the lower bole of trees, girdling the bottom three …

Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell
Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The past several decades have seen the beginning of integration of discoveries in the ecology and morphology of bats into an ecomorphological whole that promises to be greater than the sum of its parts. However, achieving this integration is challenging. Each of the elements of this interdisciplinary field is, in itself, avast and complex subject. This book is a testament to the breadth and depth of ecological studies of bats. Morphological studies now extend be- yond descriptive anatomy in both outlook and method, and incorporate, for example, aspects of genetics, physiology, solid and fluid mechanics, and developmental biology. There is …

Bean/Cowpea Collaborative Research Support Program (B/C CRSP) scientists have successfully developed integrated consensus maps of the 11 linkage groups (LGs) in both bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp). The bean map is approximately 1200 cM with some 500 markers and an additional 500 markers shared with other bean maps. The cowpea map spans 2670 cM with over 400 markers. In addition to molecular markers, both maps include map locations of defense genes and phenotypic traits for disease and insect resistance, seed size, color and storage proteins, pod color and those traits associated with the …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
Today I have the pleasure of beginning my remarks with good news. That's always a treat, and it seems to become even more so in hard times. Certainly the state's budget crisis and its consequences ever-present in our lives make for hard times these days in Nebraska, and good news is something we all can use and celebrate. Our good news in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska is that Dr. James Van Etten, a member of our Department of Plant Pathology, has been elected to membership in the highly prestigious National Academy of …

Agroecosystems Analysis From The Grass Roots: A Multidimensional Experiential Learning Course, Mary Wiedenhoeft, Steve Simmons, Ricardo Salvador, Gina Mcandrews, Charles A. Francis, James W. King, David Hole
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
An intensive, experiential travel course in Agroecosystems Analysis was conducted in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska (United States) during summers of 1998 and 1999. The intended student audience was advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Pretravel readings and a week-long series of farm visits, which consisted of in-depth interviews with the farmers and their families, prepared student teams to analyze and evaluate the production, economic, environmental, and social sustainability of 10 farms. Students shared their analyses both orally and in written reports. Based on a multifaceted student evaluation process, we found that participants were highly motivated, strongly engaged with the course …

Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The popular vision of the Great Plains as a region of ongoing population decline is only partly appropriate. In a fundamental transformation of the population geography previously set in the late 19th century, there is an emerging divide between growing metropolitan centers concentrated along the region's periphery and a vast interior struggling to hold its traditional rural population. The size and geographical distribution of population within the Great Plains region is examined over time with the aid of cartographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Intercensal net migration rates estimated using the vital statistics-based residual method are mapped by county …
Constructing The Cooper Model Of Folsom Bison Kills On The Southern Plains, Leland Bement
Constructing The Cooper Model Of Folsom Bison Kills On The Southern Plains, Leland Bement
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Cooper model postulates that a dichotomy exists in the size and seasonality of bison kill sites from the Folsom age (10,800- 10,200 years ago). This dichotomy is a result of changing settlement and subsistence patterns, from population aggregation in the late summer and early fall for large-scale kills, to a dispersed pattern with small bison kills during all other seasons. Attendant to the change in human population aggregation and number of bison harvested are changes in bison butchering techniques, choice of camp location, and ritual activity. It is postulated that ritual activity of an aggregated group is manifest in …
Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Denitrification experiments have provided data showing the pitfalls and successes in developing a sustainable injection/extraction system in a sand and gravel aquifer. Experiments increase in complexity from continuous injection at one well to automated-pulsed eight well injections. In both continuous and pulsed injection of organic carbon, 40 mg NO3-N l–1 was reduced below the detection limit of < 0.1 mg NO3-N l–1 in the denitrification zones. Under continuous injection, accumulation of bacterial exudates in the vicinity of the injection well resulted in injection well clogging within ten days. Periodic cleaning of the injection well and the adjacent …

Metabolism Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Fermentation of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and other oligosaccharides has been suggested to be an important property for the selection of bacterial strains used as probiotics. However, little information is available on FOS transport and metabolism by lactic acid bacteria and other probiotic bacteria. The objectives of this research were to identify and characterize the FOS transport system of Lactobacillus paracasei 1195. Radiolabeled FOS was synthesized enzymatically from [3H]sucrose and purified by column and thin-layer chromatography, yielding three main products: glucose (G) α-1,2 linked to two, three, or four fructose (F) units (GF2, GF3, and GF …

Pregnancy, Drug Testing, And The Fourth Amendment: Legal And Behavioral Implications, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In its efforts to protect the health of unborn children, the government is increasingly attempting to regulate pregnant women’s conduct. As with other policies affecting pregnant women’s autonomy, these policies have constitutional overtones. In Ferguson v. City of Charleston (2001), the Supreme Court struck down a South Carolina hospital’s policy of testing pregnant women for cocaine and turning positive results over to law enforcement for prosecution. This article discusses the basis of the decision and its legal and behavioral implications. Although the decision came down on the side of pregnant women’s rights, it left unresolved the issue of whether a …
