Some Observations On Cestodes Of The Genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, Parasitic In North American Voles (Microtus Spp.), Robert Rausch, Everett L. Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although cestodes of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, are common parasites of voles and certain other rodents in North America, their taxonomic status to the present time has been much confused. It is the purpose of this paper to clarify the situation in regard to those species parasitic in voles of the genus Microtus Schrank.

While certain of the cestodes considered here occur in hosts of other microtine genera, they are by far more abundant in the various species of Mi· crotus. At least two are also common in geomyid rodents. With the possible exception of Paranoplocephala brevis Kirschenblatt, …

Trypsin Inhibitor. Vii. Comparative Nutritive Value Of Raw And Heated Soybean Meal For Poults, C. W. Ackerson, Raymond Borchers, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

I. The trypsin inhibitor contained in one-half of a lot of soybean meal was destroyed by autoclaving at 15 pounds for 20 minutes. 2. This portion of the meal when fed at a level of 24 per cent to newly hatched poults gave a significantly greater gain in five weeks than did an equal amount of meal in which the inhibitor had not been destroyed. 3. The difference in growth is attributed to the destruction of the trypsin inhibitor.

Fiat Reports: A Bibliography And Index Of Reports Resulting From American Investigations Of German Industry, United States Department Of Commerce, Office Of Technical Services, Arlene Blackburn, W. Kenneth Lowry, Inez C. Wallace, Robert Bolin , Depositor

Electronic Reference Materials

After World War II, American forces in Europe set up the Field Intelligence Agency, Technical (FIAT) to host and provide administrative support for visiting American experts who were studying German industry. FIAT prepared reports of those experts and assigned FIAT report numbers to them. Those reports were distributed in two ways:

1) FIAT reports were sent to the Office of the Publication Board (OPB), in the Department of Commerce, which had been set up to distribute the fruits of American research and development during World War II and of American studies of Axis science, technology, and industry. The OPB evolved …

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

The first year of the 4-H food preservation project teaches approved methods of canning fruits and vegetables and stresses the foods needed for good health. The second year aims to continue this study of nutrition and takes up the canning of meats, relishes and fruit spreads. Some canning is also included in the cooking club projects. It may be practical to dry, brine, freeze or store some foods, and club members may substitute up to one-half of the canning requirement with dried, brined, frozen or stored foods.

Educational program of extension work was supported entirely from County Tax funds. The Budget for the coming year was raised to $3,475 from last years budget of $2975. This was very much appreciated, as it will allow a more complete extension service program. This is $25.00 under the $3500 calling allowed by the new bill L. B. 405

The annual meeting was attended by 164 people. The program which was held in the new 4-H building and at the experimental Station, consisted of a business session, four talks on current livestock problems, and a morning and afternoon session of witnessing …

Microbiology Of Soil, Nathan Wakefield Jan 1948

Microbiology Of Soil, Nathan Wakefield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The discovery that certain microorganisms isolated from soil could produce antibiotics when grown in pure cultures in the lab oratory has served to focus attention as never before on the subject of soil microbiology. The main emphasis, however, is on problems entirely unrelated to the processes which go on in the soil. The fact that an organism was isolated from soil and then used in medicine, fermentations, or some such way, does not bring such work in the actual field of soil microbiology. Practically all except the more fastidious animal and plant pathogens can be found in the soil at …

Trypsin Inhibitor. V. Nutritive Value Of Treated Soybean Oil Meal And Some Characteristics Of The Trypsin Inhibitor In Soybeans, Raymond Borchers, W. E. Ham, R. M. Sandstedt, C. W. Ackerson, R. H. Thayer, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The marked improvement in the apparent nutritive value of soybean protein after heating has long been recognized. The fundamental cause of this improvement has never been fully understood. Furthermore, commercial soybean oil meal varies considerably in nutritive value although heat treatment is common in most processing plants. Since heating is generally regarded as deleterious to the nutritive quality of protein, the following investigations of various treatments of soybean oil meal are of particular importance in developing a soybean or soybean oil meal of maximum and uniform nutritive value.

The Vitamin A And Carotene Content Of Nebraska Butter, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Feb 1947

The Vitamin A And Carotene Content Of Nebraska Butter, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The vitamin-A, carotene, fat and moisture concentrations of Nebraska creamery butter were determined at monthly intervals for 25 months. Samples were obtained from 14 creameries located throughout the state. Their vitamin-A and carotene determinations were made with the aid of a spectrophotometer, and their fat and moisture analyses were determined by the A.O.A.C. methods. From a comparison of these data with the results of investigations in other states it was concluded that Nebraska butter was at least equal in vitamin-A value to average United States butter.

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xi. A Comparison Of Ground Wheat And Ground Rye In Rations For Growing Chicks, C. W. Ackerson, W. E. Ham, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. The effect of replacing the shorts and bran of a standard ration by ground wheat or ground rye was studied with two lots of newly hatched chicks. 2. Comparisons were made on the basis of equal intakes of dry matter and nitrogen by all chicks. 3. The wheat-fed lot made a significantly greater gain than the rye-fed lot. 4. Several cases of curled-toe paralysis occurred in the two lots, and a tendency to cannibalism appeared in the rye-fed lot.

Distillers' By-Products And Soybean Meal In Dry Calf Starters For Calves On Limited Quantities Of Milk, H. P. Davis, G. W. Trimberger Mar 1946

Distillers' By-Products And Soybean Meal In Dry Calf Starters For Calves On Limited Quantities Of Milk, H. P. Davis, G. W. Trimberger

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Whole milk is recognized to be very satisfactory as the principal source of nutrients for young growing calves. But the price of milk and its importance as food for human beings has tended to introduce the use of substitutes. Skim milk has been demonstrated to be a satisfactory substitute when fed with grain after the first few weeks of feeding; but since skim milk, too, has become of increased usefulness for human nutrition, this experiment, one of a series, was designed to determine whether or not combinations of various grains, when fortified with vitamins, could be substituted for the solids …
