Studies On The Ascaris Lumbricoides, Harry Mathias Martin
Studies On The Ascaris Lumbricoides, Harry Mathias Martin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The Ascaris lumbricoides [roundworm], in one phase or another, has attracted the attention of parasitologists for many years, and during the last decade this parasite has been studied by a large number of investigators. The recent observations have been, to a great extent, directed along one line, the study of its life history. These investigators have established two important points: (a) That the life history of Ascaris is more complex than was supposed, as it has been found that a vasculo-pulmonary circuit of the larvae is necessary before they settle down in the intestine, where they develop to the adult …

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es
Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The tuberculosis of swine constitutes a definite and very interesting section of the general problem of the tuberculoses of warm-blooded animals. No one section of this general tuberculosis problem can be adequately solved without regard to all the other sections into which it may be divided. The disease in swine is perhaps the most outstanding example which illustrates this point. This animal, extremely susceptible to tuberculous disease, but without a type of infection specifically its own, derives its infection by contact with any of the types of tuberculosis of warm-blooded animals.

Potato Wilt And Stem-End Rot Caused By Fusarium Eumartii, R. W. Goss
Potato Wilt And Stem-End Rot Caused By Fusarium Eumartii, R. W. Goss
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The present study was undertaken to obtain more information regarding the pathogenicity of Fusarium eumartii and to compare its action with F. oxysporum, in order to distinguish between and to determine the relative importance of the diseases produced by these two organisms. An effort was also made to explain the many negative results of isolation studies reported by various investigators, as well as the inconsistent results often reported in studies of the transmission of wilt by infected tubers. Investigations dealing with the effect of certain environmental conditions on the occurrence of the disease were also undertaken. All of the …

Trematodes From The Rat, Horace Wesley Stunkard, Chilson B. Haviland
Trematodes From The Rat, Horace Wesley Stunkard, Chilson B. Haviland
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Occasional examinations of rats for animal parasites have been carried on for over a hundred years. Later, knowledge of the importance of rats as reservoirs of infection and as agents in the transfer of parasitic diseases has led to the regular and careful examination of large numbers in various parts of the world. Among the more recent publications dealing with the parasites of rats may be mentioned Shipley (1908), Moll (1917), Chandler (1921), Balfour (1922), Baylis (1922), Stevenson (1922), Hegner (1923), and Lavier (1924). Notwithstanding the many investigations, only a single trematode parasite has previously been discovered and concerning it …
The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es
The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
This casting out of a dead or at least abnormal fetus we call abortion. It constitutes the culminating accident in a process set into motion by disease or injury. To the breeder it is its most conspicuous feature, and it's more or less constant occurrence among live stock warrants us to speak of the abortion problem. It is the purpose of this publication to lay before our Nebraska breeders such information on the subject as can be gathered from the more recent literature and from observations in the field and the laboratory.
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Up until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.
Relation Of Environment And Other Factors To Potato Wilt Caused By Fusarium Oxysporum, R. W. Goss
Relation Of Environment And Other Factors To Potato Wilt Caused By Fusarium Oxysporum, R. W. Goss
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The present work was undertaken to determine the influence of some environmental factors on the infection and progress of the disease potato wilt. The work has not progressed to the point of determining the exact relation of each of these factors. However, the results thus far obtained are presented here in order to direct attention to the nature and distribution of the disease in relation to the environmental conditions under which certain types of infection take place.
Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith
Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Physiology and ecology depend for their constructive development largely upon the applications of physico-chemical concepts to living organisms and their environment, to their life processes, reactions, and interrelations. A concept is valuable biologically in so far as it can be applied and used as a tool for better understanding of the phenomena related to life. Ecology, as the study of the relations between organisms and their environment and of the interrelations of organisms, depends primarily upon the findings of physiology (Clements, 1905). But to apply physicochemical concepts and hence make them of value to the physiologist or ecologist commonly requires …

Anthocyan Pigments, Paul B. Sears
Papers in Ecology
Noack has found rhamnose-free flavonol diglucosides to be much more abundant in green leaves than has generally been supposed. In such leaves as he studied he was able to establish the existence of flavonol-anthocyan in couples of similar glucosidal nature, but secured no evidence of aromatic nucleus composition in such cases. He suggests that these couples function as a reduction mechanism during photosynthesis.

Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell
Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
An investigation was outlined (1) to determine the parasitism of Fusarium on soy bean, (2) to establish its relationship to Fusaria of the section Elegans in so far as a comparison of the cultural characters permitted, and (3) by means of cross- inoculations and field studies to determine the relationship of this disease of soy beans to the wilt disease of cowpeas (Vigna sinensis Hassk.) caused by Fusarium tracheiphilum Smith. The results of these investigations up to the close of the summer of 1916 have been reported. The studies were continued at the North Carolina Experiment Station until the …
King Cnut's Song And Ballad Origins, Louise Pound
King Cnut's Song And Ballad Origins, Louise Pound
Department of English: Faculty Publications
King Cnut's song, according to Professor Gummere gives us our “first example of actual ballad structure and the ballad's metrical form, which is to be met in English records." He quotes the account from the Historia Eliensis of 1166. Cnut, with his queen Emma and divers of the great nobles, was coming by boat to Ely, and, as they neared land, the King stood up, and told his men to row slowly while he looked at the great church and listened to the song of the monks which came sweetly over the water. "Then he called all who were with …

This list of Nebraska authors has been prepared to answer the many demands for such information that have come to this library. The frequency with which this reference inquiry appears, not only in our library but elsewhere, is shown from the fact that manuscript lists of Nebraska authors have been compiled in the Lincoln City Library, the State Library, the Library Commission, the State Historical Society, and the Legislative Reference Bureau. This material has been placed freely at the disposal of the compiler of the present list. Many individuals have also been consulted and have contributed information of value. The …
Studies Of The Etiology And Control Of Blister Canker On Apple Trees, J. Ralph Cooper
Studies Of The Etiology And Control Of Blister Canker On Apple Trees, J. Ralph Cooper
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The blister canker caused by Nummularia discreta Tul. is by far the most destructive disease of apple trees found in the United States. Serious damage due to this disease was first reported in Illinois in 1902. Since that time the disease has been reported to cause much damage in all apple-producing sections east of the Rocky Mountains. In Nebraska the disease is so prevalent that it is practically impossible to find an orchard free from it, and in many instances whole orchards have been destroyed thru its attacks. Because of the rapid dissemination and the destructive nature of blister canker, …
Color And Color-Pattern Mechanism Of Tiger Beetles, Victor E. Shelford
Color And Color-Pattern Mechanism Of Tiger Beetles, Victor E. Shelford
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
In 1903 the writer undertook a study of variation of the tiger beetles. The work here presented is the outgrowth of this beginning, and indeed includes some small portions regarding color patterns that were written in that year. The work has been prolonged for many reasons, but chief of these was the very large number of species in the group and the fact that an adequate understanding of the material could not be attained without consulting many large collections. Further, the experimental results obtained in 1906 demanded a firsthand study of the variations of the species concerned and their natural …
Ecological Studies In The Tension Zone Between Prairie And Woodland, J. E. Weaver, Albert F. Thiel
Ecological Studies In The Tension Zone Between Prairie And Woodland, J. E. Weaver, Albert F. Thiel
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Upon the completion of a series of investigations in southeastern Washington and adjacent Idaho, in which there was found to be a direct relation between the available water content of the soil and the evaporating power of the air as succession progressed from grassland through scrub to forest, the senior writer moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Here such excellent conditions of prairie invaded by scrub and followed by forest offered themselves for study that the services of the junior author were enlisted and an analysis of the situation attempted. Later this study was supplemented by similar work carried on at Lincoln, …

A Physiological Study Of Two Strains Of Fusarium In Their Causal Relation To Tuber Rot And Wilt Of Potato, George K. Link
A Physiological Study Of Two Strains Of Fusarium In Their Causal Relation To Tuber Rot And Wilt Of Potato, George K. Link
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. Fusarium tuberivorum Wilcox and Link is the same as Fusarium trichothecioides Woll. 2. Both Fusarium oxysporum and F. trichothecioides can produce both tuber rot and wilt of the potato plant. 3. The wilt is induced by destruction of the root system and by clogging of the xylem elements in the stem, and is, in mild cases, marked by such symptoms as discoloration of leaves, curling and rolling of leaves, and production of aerial tubers. 4. Under field and storage conditions Fusarium oxysporum is more probably responsible for wilt than is F. trichothecioides, and the latter more responsible for …
