Changes In Fungi With Age I. Chemical Composition Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola , David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The chemical composition of the mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola was determined in cells of various ages. The percentage, per unit of dry weight, of soluble amino nitrogen, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), ergosterol, and protein decreased with age in both fungi. Total lipids and fatty acids increased with age in S. bataticola but remained constant in R. solani. Total carbohydrate increased with age in R. solani and decreased in S. bataticola. Fewer changes with age were observed when the results were calculated in ratio to DNA. There was no change in the ratios of protein, …

Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams
Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
METHODOLOGY for residue analysis has advanced rapidly during the current review period, from November 1962 through October 1964. Notable progress has been made in the development and refinement of methods of analysis by which any or all of a large number of pesticide residue chemicals can be detected and measured in one general operation. This is of particular significance because great interest has developed-outside the scientific community as well as within - in the possible presence of pesticide chemicals in all parts of our environment, including man himself. Only by the use of improved methodology will it be possible to …

Studies On Myxosoma Cartilaginis N. Sp. (Protozoa: Myxosporidea) Of Centrarchid Fish And A Synopsis Of The Myxosoma Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Robert E. Putz, Clarence E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Myxosoma cartilaginis n. sp. is described from the cartilage of Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill), L. cyanellus (green sunfish) and Micropterus salmoides (largemouth black bass). The development of the parasite is described from naturally infected fish which were held in spore-free water after infection. The sporoplasm invades cartilage, and becomes a multinucleate trophozoite which forms pansporoblasts, each of which produces 2 to 4 spores. The first spores appear in 7 weeks.
The histopathology in the above fish consists at first of little cellular reaction, but after 4 to 5 months epithelioid granulomas appear arround some of the spore masses. Cartilage liquefaction is …

Inflammatory Publicity In State Criminal Cases, Donald F. Burt
Nebraska Law Review
Much has been written about the evils of, and solutions to, the problem of trial by newspaper. It is not the purpose of this article to attempt an exhaustive exposition of all that has been said before, but rather to summarize the problem, to examine the past approaches to its solution, and then to discuss the relative merits of proposed new solutions, such as: (1) amendment and/or enforcement of Canon 20 [of the American Bar Association Canons of Professional Ethics]; (2) adoption by the news media of enforceable codes of ethics; and (3) adoption of criminal legislation which would punish …

Isolation And Preliminary Characterization Of Bacteriophage Φμ-4, Fred Shafia, T.L. Thompson
Isolation And Preliminary Characterization Of Bacteriophage Φμ-4, Fred Shafia, T.L. Thompson
Papers in Microbiology
Isolation and preliminary characterization of bacteriophage Φμ-4. J. Bacteriol. 87:999-1002. 1964.-Bacteriophage Φμ-4 was isolated from lysogenic Bacillus stearothermophilus NU strain 4, and was propagated in strain 10 of the same species. The phage was extremely host-specific. One of the 23 strains of thermophiles screened for susceptibility supported phage replication. Plaque-forming efficiency of Φμ-4 depended on the agar medium employed and the temperature of incubation. Generally, media which resulted in restricted growth of the host cells on agar plates were most satisfactory for plaque formation. A latent period of 35 min was terminated in cell lysis and release of about 175 …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
Energy from nuclear sources will contribute substantially toward meeting the world's power requirements by the end of this century and possibly will dominate by the middle of the next. While it is hoped that the fusion of hydrogen or deuterium will ultimately provide energy at negligible cost, this is not certain; and present efforts are directed mainly toward the develop ment of reactors wherein nuclear energy is released by the neutron-induced fission of certain isotopes of uranium and plutonium.

Article 8—Investment Securities, Winthrop B. Lane
Nebraska Law Review
This paper sketches some of the important provisions and reasoning back of Article 8 of the Uniform Commercial Code, which will become effective September 1, 1965. It takes the security when issued and deals with the handling of the security on the market. Nebraska, not being primarily a commercial state, has relatively little case law on the subject covered by Article 8. Hence, this article will be helpful in Nebraska in that it will make certain a number of matters now not touched by legislation or case law and will avoid the necessity of trying to weave our way among …
Bank Deposits And Collections And Letters Of Credit, Flavel A. Wright
Bank Deposits And Collections And Letters Of Credit, Flavel A. Wright
Nebraska Law Review
In drafting the Uniform Commercial Code, the most controversial article was that relating to bank deposits and collections. The difference in attitudes toward Article IV is best explained by the importance placed on (1) the need for speedy handling of checks, (2) consideration of the practical problems and operations in handling the tremendous volume of items that move through the ordinary commercial banks each day, and (3) the tremendous increase in the volume of these items each year.
Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis
Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Much of the research on hyperparasitism has been of a descriptive nature, based primarily on studies with dual cultures in synthetic media. The main contributions from these investigations concern the host range of the parasite, the mode of penetration and infection, and the morphological changes of the host and the parasite resulting from parasitism.
More recent studies on hyperparasitism emphasize the effect of environmental factors, especially nutrition, on the susceptibility of the host. Research on the physiology of hyperparasitism has been limited. Nevertheless, this important aspect of the problem should continue to receive increased attention as hyperparasitism is extremely amenable …
Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy
Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Fatty acids and other surface active agents were used to clarify the relationship of surface activity to the inhibition of lactic streptococci. There was complete inhibition of lactic streptococci in media where surface activity exceeded a critical level. The effectiveness of inhibition by fatty acids, nonionic surface active agents, anionic surface active agents, decyl alcohol, growth medium, and temperature variation was directly related to the surface activity. The surface active agents created an unfavorable environment at most concentrations, rather than acting as a specific inhibitory substance to which the organisms were capable of adapting and thereafter resuming normal growth. The …

The Inhibition Of Seedling Growth By Crop Residues In Soil Inoculated Wlth Penicillium Urticae Bainer, D. E. Behmer, T. M. Mccalla
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In the Great Plains area of the United States, stubble-mulch practices have been widely used in the control of soil erosion by wind or water. Although this method of leaving crop residue on the surface has been very effective in combating erosion, depressed plant growth and reduced grain yield have often occurred in wet years. Similar growth problems have been observed during unseasonably cool, wet springs in field experiments at Lincoln, Nebraska. Because increased numbers of certain micro-organisms occur immediately beneath a decomposing surface mulch, the production of phytotoxic compounds under these conditions may well have been associated with the …
Effects Of Food, Temperature, And Oviposition Site On Longevity And Fecundity Of The Army Cutworm, K. P. Pruess
Effects Of Food, Temperature, And Oviposition Site On Longevity And Fecundity Of The Army Cutworm, K. P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Longevity of the army cutworm, Chorizagrotis auxiliaris (Grote), following mating was inversely related to temperature. Females lived longer than males at all temperatures, and food increased longevity of both sexes. Oviposition occurred at 70° and 55° but not at 32° F. None of the variables tested affected total fecundity but oviposition was completed sooner at 70° than at 55°, in sand as an oviposition site vs. paper toweling and by unfed than by fed moths. Starvation preceding oviposition did not affect fecundity but speeded completion of oviposition when moths were returned to favorable conditions.

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
A number of years ago I had an opportunity to express myself in anticipation of the completion of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Planning was largely completed at that time and construction was well under way. My thoughts had adjusted themselves to the compromises which are inevitable in such a situation and I was encouraged to believe that all was well with the job at hand. Lest I be guilty of creating the impression that the story has another ending, let me say that the completed building has surpassed our expectations.
In the months of the first year following the …

Significant Developments In European Corn Borer Research1,2, T. A. Brindley, F.F. Dicke
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Since its identification as an introduced pest in 1917, the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hilbner), has been investigated under widely different environmental conditions. During the first decade, the research was directed largely toward studies on biology and the development of control measures that were cultural, biological, and mechanical in nature. The important initial objective was a delaying action to reduce populations in the infested areas, thereby impeding the spread to the central Corn Belt. Legislation was enacted making it compulsory for growers to practice stipulated population-reducing measures. The spread west and south and the economics of harvesting and cultural …
