Nebraska Wild Flowers, Robert C. Lommasson, Paul Lommasson (Depositor) Jan 1973

Nebraska Wild Flowers, Robert C. Lommasson, Paul Lommasson (Depositor)

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This book is an attempt to present to the general public representative types of many of the conspicuous wild flowers found in Nebraska. These 260-some plants in no way constitute a flora of Nebraska which would number some 1,700 species of flowering plants. Included herein are both native and naturalized flowering herbaceous plants exclusive of the grasses and grasslike plants. Among these are plants that have had a long existence here and others which have recently invaded our area. Some are highly cherished and others are considered as common weeds. Excluded from this book are woody plants, such as trees, …

Animal Damage Control In South Dakota, V. Van Ballenberghe Jan 1973

Animal Damage Control In South Dakota, V. Van Ballenberghe

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

South Dakota, like virtually all other states, is subject to economic losses from wildlife depredations. We have been in the government sponsored, animal damage control business perhaps longer than some states - our history dates back to the time of Three-toes and the Custer Wolf. In 1973 we are still in that business, perhaps more intensively than ever before, and we regard animal damage control as one of the most pervasive and difficult to solve wildlife problems facing us.

The Missouri River bisects South Dakota into approximately equal "East River" and "West River" land areas. These differ ecologically, and to …

Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder Jan 1973

Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

Noumenon: Synopsis

The work, which perhaps could best be described as a “metaphysical comedy”, consists of three levels:

1) the biography of the unnamed dilettante artist-philosopher “__”
2) personal interpolations by the biographer, Russel Stanford
3) editor’s commentary by Randall Snyder

Stanford, in spite of a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, agrees to write the biography. During this period his health degenerates and he increasingly imposes his own irrelevant opinions into the biography (his remarks are all indented, using the Palatino font, and further identified by the use of the small case “i”. The “biography” uses the New York …

Exposure To Media Alternatives, Jack Burke Jan 1973

Exposure To Media Alternatives, Jack Burke

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Media use should not be a half way activity done after everything else on your mind is taken care of. The key word is commitment--if you are not ready to give proper preparation which includes understand what each (newspaper, radio, TV, etc.) does best, then don't do anything. There is at least a certain minimum quality standard that must be met--anything less and media exposure can hurt you and your program rather than help you. Seek help. Then select the media to fit your time, money and inclination. Example: Even if you don't buy time--television properly done may cost much …

A New Partnership In Corrections, Maurice H. Sigler Jan 1973

A New Partnership In Corrections, Maurice H. Sigler

Nebraska Law Review

This last year has been one of the most tempestuous in the history of American corrections. The uproar really didn't start with Attica. It's been brewing for a long time. But Attica touched it off. Since then we have had recurrent disorders and unrest accompanied by wide public debate. Newspapers and periodicals nowadays often include articles and editorials on the shortcomings of corrections. The courts, legislative committees, church groups, chambers of commerce, and similar community organizations have joined in. Last December at the National Conference on Corrections called by President Nixon, the message was loud and clear. The country expects …

Quantitative Analysis Of Swine Chromosomes (Mammalia: Suiidae), J.M. Rary, R.L. Murphree Jan 1973

Quantitative Analysis Of Swine Chromosomes (Mammalia: Suiidae), J.M. Rary, R.L. Murphree

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The primary objectives of this study were: (1) to provide quantitative descriptions of the chromosomes of the domestic swine (Sus scrota: 2n=38), the European wild swine (2n=36) and the domestic-European wild hybrid (2n=37); and (2) to define chromosomal differences between the three karyotypes.

The diploid (2n) chromosome number of the domestic swine has been shown to be 38 (Ruddle, 1961; Makina et al., 1962; McConnell et al., 1963). The European wild swine of the Tellico Wildlife Management Area of Tennessee has been shown to have a diploid chromosome number of 36 (Rary et al., 1968). European …

A Floristic Study Of Dawes County, Nebraska, Lowell E. Urbatsch, Robert Eddy Jan 1973

A Floristic Study Of Dawes County, Nebraska, Lowell E. Urbatsch, Robert Eddy

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Physical features pertinent to the flora of Dawes County are summarized. A checklist of the known taxa with notes on ecology and origin of each form follows the Literature cited.

This study was undertaken because the need for a reasonably complete list of flowering plants and for a plant collection of the Chadron vicinity has been felt in the botany courses taught at Chadron State College.

The plants reported in this annotated list were collected from several sites throughout the county by the authors during the 1970 and 1971 growing seasons. However, in order to make the list more complete, …

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This publication is written as a guide for evaluating and planning the space and equipment available for geographic education in an undergraduate college. The objectives are:
(1) to present ideas about potential facilities for various kinds of geographic programs;
(2) to provide information to administrators and architects about special space and equipment needs of geography; and
(3) to serve as a guide for geographers planning new (and remodeled) facilities.
vIt is hoped that readers may gain ideas about potential facilities for geography. No "ideal" departmental plan is presented because there is no one such plan for all departments. The use …

Herpetomonas Megaseliae Sp. N. (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae) From Megaselia Scalaris (Loew, 1866) Schmitz, 1929 (Diptera: Phoridae), Pierre M. Daggett, John J. Janovy Jr., Norman R. Dollahon Oct 1972

Herpetomonas Megaseliae Sp. N. (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae) From Megaselia Scalaris (Loew, 1866) Schmitz, 1929 (Diptera: Phoridae), Pierre M. Daggett, John J. Janovy Jr., Norman R. Dollahon

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

A new intestinal trypanosomatid was found parasitizing Megaselia scalaris. Forms with posterior kinetoplasts occurred in both natural infections and cloned cultures, but not in experimental infections. Average size and morphological variation were reduced in experimental infections with cloned stocks, compared to natural infections. A growth comparison was made between Herpetomonas muscarum and H. megaseliae. Differences in day of peak population, maximum numbers, and total time of survival were observed in culture. Attempts to infect Drosophila melanogaster with H. megaseliae were unsuccessful.

Review Of Frank Regen, Apuleius Philosophus Platonicus. Untersuchungen Zur Apologie (De Magia) Und Zu De Mundo, Thomas Nelson Winter Sep 1972

Review Of Frank Regen, Apuleius Philosophus Platonicus. Untersuchungen Zur Apologie (De Magia) Und Zu De Mundo, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This work examines the demonology of the Apology, De Mundo, De Deo Socratis, Florida, and De Dogmate Platonis in various aspects, noting places where De Mundo transmutes the meaning of its Greek model, the Peri Kosmou. These changes in meaning Dr. Regen shows to be systematic; they align the Latin version with Plato’s Symposium in places, and with Apuleius’ principles generally. Some changes may be illusory: does “rex omnium et pater” differ enough from ho panton hegemon kai genetor that conclusions can be drawn from the difference? Most changes, though, are more substantive. The sum is a useful …

Appendices list references and technical intelligence categories, provide a sample technical intelligence plan, and explain handling and reporting of captured materiel and the standard nomenclature system for identifying Soviet bloc weapons and …

Phyletic Trends In Certain Lineages Of Quaternary Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Lary D. Martin Jun 1972

Phyletic Trends In Certain Lineages Of Quaternary Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Lary D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Evolutionary trends in certain carnivores, rodents, bovids, and proboscideans are examined. Chronoclines are demonstrated for muskrats, beavers, mammoths, and bison. The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary and Quaternary climatic fluctuations are also discussed.

The University of Nebraska State Museum contains a large stratigraphically controlled collection of Pleistocene animals. This collection provides a unique opportunity for the study of phyletic trends in certain lineages of mammals. Although a few phylogenetic lineages have been proposed (Schultz and Frankforter, 1946; Hibbard, et al., 1965), this has not been done for the vast majority of Pleistocene mammals. However, there is much more data available than this would …

Date Of Planting Studies Of Winter Wheat And Winter Barley In Relation To Root And Crown Rot Grain Yields And Quality, C. R. Fenster, M. G. Boosalis, J. L. Weihing

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study was undertaken to determine the nature of root and crown rot of wheat and to ascertain the proper time to plant winter wheat so as to conserve moisture, minimize root and crown rot and thereby maximize yield. Studies conducted for 15 years at several locations in western Nebraska reveal that planting date is a significant factor for higher yields, particularly in certain years.

Fessisentis, A Genus Of Acanthocephalans Parasitic In North American Poikilotherms, Brent B. Nickol

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Thirteen of 16 Siren intermedia collected in Union County, Illinois, were infected with from two to 49 specimens of Fessisentis fessus Van Cleave, 1931. There are no previous reports of identified specimens of Acanthocephala from Siren. This is also the first report of F. fessus since the original description and represents new host and locality records. Old siren harbor more and larger specimens than do young siren. Intensity of infection and host age do not, however, relate to variability of other morphological features. Two paratypes, the original description, and specimens from siren form the basis for redescription of Fessisentis fessus …

Depth Perception As A Function Of Age, Benjamin Bell M.D., Ernst Wolf Ph.D., Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Binocular depth perception was investigated in 164 healthy Ss of the Normative Aging Study, in connection with a model of ocular aging which explains change in the dioptric media in the forties on the basis of mechanical change and later change in the retina on the basis of metabolic change. A modified Verhoeff stereopter was used. The results showed a marked diminution to make stereoptic judgments occurred in the forties decade. This is in accordance with the model. In a companion paper, retinal field shrinkage will be explored as an illustration of later metabolic age change.

Starling Control In Sonoma County, Harry F. Mccracken Mar 1972

Starling Control In Sonoma County, Harry F. Mccracken

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)

The European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris, began the invasion of California from the north and east as early as the late 1930's. In the winter of 1954, 20,000 of these birds were reported spending the winter in or near the Sonoma, Mendocino Coast. Then in 1961, Walter Ball, at that time the Chief of the Bureau of Rodent and Weed Control in Sacramento, in a talk to the Agricultural Commissioners at the Spring Convention, stated Starlings had been reported from nearly every section of California. In reviewing Walter Ball's paper given at that time, it is somewhat surprising how accurately the …

Informed Consent: Some Problems Revisited, Arthur J. Shartsis

Nebraska Law Review

It is no longer disputed that the physician has a duty to inform his patient of the nature of the treatment proposed by the physician and the risks involved in that treatment. Because of this required disclosure the patient is better able to "determine what shall be done with his own body" by making an informed decision whether or not to undergo treatment. Yet, both the law and medicine are far from the "last say" concerning certain particularly difficult problems which arise within the scope of the physician's communication to the patient and the patient's assent to treatment. In this …

Detection Of Energetic Heavy Ions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, Mehdi Homayoonfar

Robert Katz Publications

The delta-ray theory of track structure, applied earlier to such 1-or-more hit detection systems as the inactivation of dry enzymes and viruses, the NaI(Tl) scintillation counter, and nuclear emulsion, is extended to the silver activated phosphate glass dosimeter, the LiF thermoluminescent dosimeter, the creation of free radicals in solid biological substances, solid and liquid organic scintillators, and the ferrous sulfate (Fricke) dosimeter. The response of these systems to both gamma-rays and heavy ions is characterized by two parameters: 1) Dγ37, the dose of gamma-rays at which 37% of the sensitive elements remain unaffected by the radiation, and …
