Bromethalin: A Promising New Rodenticide, William B. Jackson, S. R. Spaulding, R. B. L. Van Lier, B. A. Dreikorn
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Bromethalin is a unique highly potent rodenticide exhibiting a mode of action different from anticoagulant rodenticides. Bromethalin provides a lethal dose to rodents in a single feeding with death generally delayed two to three days. Rodents do not discriminate against bromethalin bait; therefore, excellent bait acceptance is achieved with no prebaiting. Field studies have shown bromethalin bait to be highly efficacious against Norway rats and house mice under a variety of field conditions. Laboratory and field trial data indicate bromethalin is effective against known anticoagulant–resistant rodent populations. Toxicological data indicate bromethalin bait is relatively safe to nontarget species as well …
The Role Of Usda In Animal Damage Control, James E. Miller
The Role Of Usda In Animal Damage Control, James E. Miller
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
The impact of vertebrate animal damage on agricultural production of row crops, forests, horticulture, poultry and livestock production, other wildlife, health of humans and domestic animals, and the protection of human interests is a vital concern of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Department recognizes that it is an old and complex problem that does not lend itself to easy answers. Animal damage problems will continue to be a significant concern of USDA and will probably always be controversial, requiring intensive research, educational, regulatory, and assistance programs. The objectives of the Department are to develop and maintain viable programs in …

Guard Dogs And Gas Exploders As Coyote Depredation Control Tools In North Dakota, William K. Pfeifer, Michael W. Goos
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
Guard dogs and gas exploders have been successfully used in North Dakota to protect sheep from coyote (Canis latrans) depredation since the mid-1970s. They have been used in addition to other lethal and nonlethal control tools. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gathered information from field testing and landowner interviews to measure their effectiveness. Guard dogs reduced the rate of depredation by 93 percent on the 36 ranches surveyed. Gas exploders deterred coyotes from depredating on 30 ranches an average of 31 days during the 1980 and 1981 grazing seasons. An increasing number of sheep producers are using these control …
The Use Of Fences For Predator Damage Control, Dale A. Wade
The Use Of Fences For Predator Damage Control, Dale A. Wade
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)
The development of exclusion fencing has been extensive in Australia in attempts to reduce losses of crops and livestock to rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), dingos (Canis familiaris Var. dingo) and other species. Restrictions on other damage control methods have led to increased efforts in the United States to utilize such fences for protection of crops and livestock from dogs (Canis familiaris), coyotes (Canis latrans) and other species. Electric fences have occasionally been used to protect apiaries from black bears (Ursus americanus) and to protect some wildlife species from carnivores. Varied fence types include conventional net-wire or combinations of net and barbed …

Uv Light-Induced Survival Response In A Highly Radiation-Resistant Isolate Of The Moraxella-Acinetobacter Group, Lewis Keller, Thomas Thompson, R. Burt Maxcy
Uv Light-Induced Survival Response In A Highly Radiation-Resistant Isolate Of The Moraxella-Acinetobacter Group, Lewis Keller, Thomas Thompson, R. Burt Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
A highly radiation-resistant member of the Moraxella-Acinetobacter group, isolate 4, obtained from meat, was studied to determine the effect of preexposure to UV radiation on subsequent UV light resistance. Cultures that were preexposed to UV light and incubated for a short time in plate count broth exhibited increased survival of a UV light challenge dose. This response was inhibited in the presence of chloramphenicol. Frequencies of mutation to streptomycin, trimethoprim, and sulfanilamide resistance remained the same after the induction of this survival response and were not altered by treatment with mutagens, with the exception of mutation to streptomycin resistance after …

Bacterial Mosaic: A New Corynebacterial Disease Of Wheat, Randall R. Carlson, Anne K. Vidaver
Bacterial Mosaic: A New Corynebacterial Disease Of Wheat, Randall R. Carlson, Anne K. Vidaver
Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications
Bacterial mosaic is a foliar disease of wheat; characteristic symptoms are small yellow lesions, more or less uniformly distributed over the leaf. It was discovered in Nebraska in the spring of 1976. By 1979, the pathogen was distributed over an 800-km range and had been isolated from 16 cultivars of winter wheat. The pathogen is Corynebacterium michiganense subsp. tessellarius, a Gram-positive coryneform. Wheat was the only host that showed symptoms after inoculation. The pathogen reached high population levels (> 106 colony-forming units per gram of fresh weight) without apparent symptoms in tomato and in six of nine gramineous …

Microform Editions Of Documentary Collections: Where Do We Stand? And Where Do We Go From Here?, Thomas E. Jeffrey
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The following essay is intended to serve as a brief introduction to the world of scholarly micro-publishing. It will begin with a discussion of commercial micro-publishers and the contributions they can make towards the publication of a high-quality microform edition. It will also allude to some recent developments in the micro-publication of documentary collections, such as comprehensive microfiche editions and microfiche supplements to printed books, computer-generated microfiche, and selective (rather than comprehensive) microform editions. The essay will not include a technical discussion of microforms or a step-by-step description of how to prepare a collection of documents for filming. Information about …

The Pioneer Landscape: An American Dream, David Lowenthal
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
To speak of pioneers, of the pioneer character, of the pioneer spirit, instantly brings vivid impressi~ns to mind. But what and where is the pioneer landscape? No more elusive or evanescent place exists. The pioneer landscape appears here, there, almost everywhere, for only a moment early in the chronicle of any locale; then it vanishes, never to return. Only once in its history is a place a pioneer country. Other pioneering efforts may follow-the extraction of some hitherto unknown or unusable resource, the creation of some new social orderbut these efforts do not occur in pioneer landscapes or circumstances. Lindbergh …

1982 Annual Report
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
1982 was a year of challenges for all the various members of our unit including the researcher, the extension worker, the forester, and all the support staff. Our program year started on October 1, 1981 and ended on September 30, 1982.
From the agriculture standpoint, it has been a difficult year. The fall of 1981 was not favorable to the agricultural producer. Rain, freezing temperatures and even light snow was prevalent in October, 1981. Throughout the winter of 91-82, it was cold and snow was on the ground most of the winter.
It was not uncommon for counties in the …

Permeability, Underpressures, And Convection In The Oceanic Crust Near The Costa Rica Rift, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
In situ permeability and pore pressures were measured 200 m deep beneath the top of the oceanic crust at DSDP site 504B. These measurements have relevance for the transition from convective to conductive heat flow on the south flank of the Costa Rica Rift. Conventional 'slug' and constant rate injection tests were made below a hydraulic packer set at various depths in the hole. The packer was first set in a massive flow unit 37 m below the sediment-basement interface. The bulk permeability of the 172.5m of pillow basalts and basaltic flows below the packer was found to be about …

The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The plant pathogenic corynebacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that produce effects as diverse as any in the microbial world, ranging from wilts to abnormal growths. Several new pathogens have been discovered since this group was reviewed by Jensen (75), Starr (157), and Lelliott (96). Most subsequent reviews have dealt with taxonomy. The areas covered in this review necessarily reflect my biases and limitations. However, this review attempts to be comprehensive in some areas, and it calls attention to other areas that would benefit from more detailed investigation.

Hormonal Interrelationships Between Hypothalamus, Pituitary And Testis Of Rams And Bulls, Bruce D. Schanbacher
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This mini-review aims to summarize some of our recent findings relating to testicular function and feedback control of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis by testicular steroids in rams and bulls. Testosterone secretion in intact males is not tonic, but is characterized by episodic pulses. This pattern of secretion is dictated by inputs of the central nervous system via secretions of the hypothalamus (luteinizing hormone- releasing hormone; LHRH) and anterior pituitary (luteinizing hormone; LH). A temporal relationship exists between concentrations of LH and testosterone in serum and evidence is presented that strongly suggests that their episodic secretion is dependent on discrete episodes of …

The Involvement Of Nebraska Vocational Education Secondary School Advisory Councils In The Preparation Of The Local Plan For Vocational Education, Roy D. Dillon
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
With passage of the 1976 Vocational Education Amendments, PL 94-482, local schools were required to establish an advisory council or councils to enable lay persons to have input into decisions regarding the local secondary vocational education program. This policy was established on the rationale that local citizens have a right and responsibility to assist in the decisions concerning which clientele groups will be served by the local school, and what knowledges these persons should receive.
The State Advisory Council for Vocational Education, in an effort to fulfill one of its responsibilities, asked that a statewide status study be conducted to …

Cuban Women In Popular Culture, Mary Jo Deegan
Cuban Women In Popular Culture, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Popular culture is, by and large, a disruptive influence on the Cuban goal of equality for women. This rather strong statement is based on a short visit to Cuba, but fairly extensive data sources. These include daily bombardment by muzak, two evenings at nightclubs, five Cuban long-playing record albums, three women's magazines and a popular music booklet, visits to the Bay of Pigs Exhibition, and the viewing of national-sponsored television. In other words, during even a brief stay, the visitor is in frequent contact with Cuban popular culture.
There are two origins of Cuban popular culture: foreign and indigenous. The …
