Why Do Possums Survive Aerial Poisoning Operations?, D. R. Morgan, C. L. Batcheler, J. A. Peters

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

Major causes of failure of aerial poisoning operations against possums identified were: sublethal toxic loading, undersize sublethal baits, nonlearned behavioral aversion to 1080, and failure to encounter bait. Dislike of bait was not a major cause of failure.

Progress has been made towards solving these problems, but failure to encounter bait remains a likely major reason for possums surviving aerial poisoning. Improvements in the aerial sowing of bait are essential if the full benefit of this progress is to be realized.

Sex Role Socialization In Picture Books: An Update, J. Allen Williams Jr., Joetta Vernon, Martha C. Williams, Karen Malecha Mar 1987

Sex Role Socialization In Picture Books: An Update, J. Allen Williams Jr., Joetta Vernon, Martha C. Williams, Karen Malecha

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In a content analysis of children’s picture books, Weitzman et al, (1972) found females depicted far less often than males, and those females who were included tended to play traditional, stereotypical roles. The present study updates this research. Findings indicate that, while the ratio of females to males is now closer to parity, storybook characters continue to walk the well-worn paths of tradition.

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

The problem of g, essentially , concerns two very fundamental questions: (1) Why are scores on various mental ability tests positively correlated? and (2) Why do people differ in performance on such tests?

SOME DEFINITIONS

To insure that we are talking the same language, we must review a few definitions. Clarity, explicitness, and avoidance of excess meaning or connotative overtones are virtues of a definition. Aside from these properties, a definition per se affords nothing to argue about. It has nothing to do with truth or reality; it is a formality needed for communication.

A mental ability test consists …

The Nebraska Legislature: Policy Implications Of Its Organization And Operation, Robert Sittig Jan 1987

The Nebraska Legislature: Policy Implications Of Its Organization And Operation, Robert Sittig

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

The adoption of a nonpartisan unicameral legislature by Nebraska voters in 1934 increased the opportunity for distinctive policymaking in the state. This reform moved Nebraska to the forefront on many measures of legislative capability, such as structural simplicity, open deliberative process, and level of staff assistance. Yet, the Unicameral lags behind other states on other measures of legislative effectiveness and modernization. This is illustrated by inadequate compensation for legislators, insufficient winnowing if bills prior to floor consideration, and modest restraint of interest group activity. The uniqueness of the Unicameral continues to bring Nebraska attention. Although its organization and operation receive …

Chapter 25 The Role Of Government In Planning For Drought: Where Do We Go From Here?, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1987

Chapter 25 The Role Of Government In Planning For Drought: Where Do We Go From Here?, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

During the twentieth century, governments have typically responded to drought by providing emergency, short-term, and long-term assistance to distressed areas. Emergency and short-term assistance programs are often reactive, a kind of "band-aid" approach to more serious land and water management problems (Rosenberg, 1980; Hamer, 1985; Wilhite, et al., 1986). Actions of this type have long been criticized as inefficient and ineffective by the scientific community and government officials, as well as by recipients of relief. Long-term assistance programs are far fewer in number, but they are proactive. They attempt to lessen a region's vulnerability to drought through improved management and …

Department Chairperson Behaviors: Enhancing The Growth And Development Of Faculty, Myra S. Wilhite

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The major purpose of this study was to identify behaviors used by academic department chairpersons to assist faculty professionally and to describe conditions which affect those behaviors. Descriptive research design was employed in this study with major emphasis on the interview method of data collection and subsequent descriptive analysis. The survey population was 30 academic department chairpersons representing ten of the twelve North Central Region Land-Grant Colleges of Agriculture. Six case studies were presented to demonstrate how chairpersons assist "troubled" faculty. Chairs were convinced that many potential problems could be averted by frequent interaction and continual monitoring of faculty performance. …

Groundwater Quality And Policy Options In Nebraska, Mary E. Exner, Roy F. Spalding Jan 1987

Groundwater Quality And Policy Options In Nebraska, Mary E. Exner, Roy F. Spalding

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Potential contaminants and the occurrence of groundwater contamination in Nebraska are discussed. An overview of Nebraska's policy response to groundwater quality reveals that the policy has been fragmentary and generally reactive. Although a comprehensive groundwater quality protection strategy is needed if the groundwater is to be protected from potential point and nonpoint sources of contamination, it must recognize the site-specific nature of most groundwater contamination. The Nebraska Chemigation Act and the Petroleum Products and Hazardous Substances Storage and Handling Act passed in 1986 were the first comprehensive legislation addressing prevention of point source contamination. Proactive policies for the prevention of …

A Judicial Need For The 80'S: Schooling In Judicial Ethics, Howard T. Markey

Nebraska Law Review

New judges should be required to take a brief course in judicial ethics before going on the bench. There is a need for this requirement. It is justified by the good it would do for judges, for the judiciary, and for the resolution of many conceptional conflicts in the ethical imperatives confronting judges.

Comparison Of Gelled And Meat Diets For Rearing Screwworm, Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Larvae, David B. Taylor, Robert L. Mangan Jan 1987

Comparison Of Gelled And Meat Diets For Rearing Screwworm, Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Larvae, David B. Taylor, Robert L. Mangan

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A liquid diet solidified with an acrylamide-acrylate polymer gelling agent (Water-Lock) was compared with a standard meat diet for rearing screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), larvae. Size and yield of larvae reared on gel diet were equal to, or greater than, those of larvae reared on meat diet. Duration of larval development was increased by ca. 13 h on gel diet; however, variability of pupal weight and larval survival over generations were reduced when gel diet was used. Larval size was also more uniform over the 3-d period when larvae leave the rearing medium to pupate (crawl-off). Gelled diet was more …

Woven From The Soul, Spun From The Heart, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Textiles are luxuries and necessities. They are artifacts as well as primary sources which contain a wealth of information about the society that produced them Materials and color represent products available for textile production; structure gives evidence of levels of technological achievement. Patterns illustrate belief and values, frequently offering insight into daily life. The mingling of motifs expresses a kinship of ideas. Textiles, above all, illustrate a culture's freshness and vitality, its flexibility and adaptation to change.

Meaning and Metaphor: Cultural themes occur in both Persian poetry and the textile arts. Hunting, falconry, bird-and-flower studies were popular subjects for poetry, …

Chapter 37 Drought Policy: Toward A Plan Of Action, Donald A. Wilhite, William E. Easterling Iii Jan 1987

Chapter 37 Drought Policy: Toward A Plan Of Action, Donald A. Wilhite, William E. Easterling Iii

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

From the preceding discussions it is clear that in most cases, governments and international organizations have been unable to respond effectively to drought. This inability to respond was recognized by workshop participants as a serious problem of global dimensions that can only be solved through interdisciplinary studies and cooperation between scientists and policy makers.

Underground Water Problem At Chadron, Nebraska: Causes And Solution, Arthur W. Struempler Jan 1987

Underground Water Problem At Chadron, Nebraska: Causes And Solution, Arthur W. Struempler

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Chadron, Nebraska and Chadron State College have experienced rising underground water levels and deteriorating streets and buildings in recent years. Groundwater levels have been measured monthly on the campus and in the City for a six-year period (1981-1986). Water levels on the measured parts of the campus show a rise of about two feet per year for the 1981-1984 period. In ]985, the water table started to decline, probably linked to the drought and decreased consumption of lawn-irrigation water. In 1986, a wastewater (desaturation) well was installed and the groundwater table continued its decline. On the other hand, a slower …

Coagglutination And Enzyme Capture Tests For Detection Of Escherichia Coli Β-Galactosidase, Β-Glucuronidase, And Glutamate Decarboxylase, Charles W. Kaspar, Paul A. Hartman, Andrew K. Benson Jan 1987

Coagglutination And Enzyme Capture Tests For Detection Of Escherichia Coli Β-Galactosidase, Β-Glucuronidase, And Glutamate Decarboxylase, Charles W. Kaspar, Paul A. Hartman, Andrew K. Benson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Polyclonal antibodies to Escherichia coli β-galactosidase, β-glucuronidase, and glutamate decarboxylase were used in coagglutination tests for identification of these three enzymes in cell lysates. Enzyme capture assays were also developed for the detection of E. coli β-galactosidase and β-glucuronidase. The enzymes were released by using a gentle lysis procedure that did not interfere with antibody-enzyme interactions. All three enzymes were detected in 93% (51 of 55) of the E. coli strains tested by coagglutination; two of the three enzymes were identified in the remaining 7%. Of 42 non-E. coli tested by coagglutination, only four nonspecifically agglutinated either two or …

Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Our cultural apparatus appears ill-equipped, if not unable, to conceptualize or frame the present nuclear reality in a way that lets us effectively come to grips with it as it really is: a deployed, targeted, industrialized capacity to instantaneously annihilate all human life. This paper demonstrates that we key or transform our nuclear reality in virtually every conceivable way, thus normalizing it and treating it culturally the same as any other phenomenon, including the most mundane. I argue therefore that we have before us the immense and challenging task of finding a way – working with flawed and inadequate intellectual …
