A Decade Of Use Of Livestock Guarding Dogs, Raymond Coppinger, Lorna Coppinger, Gail Langeloh, Lori Gettler, Jay Lorenz

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)

Results from a ten-year study of livestock guarding dogs show that the dogs are an effective tool for reducing predation. Average reduction attained by five strains of dogs (Anatolian Shepherds, Maremmas, Shar Planinetz, Anatolian/ Shars, Maremma/Shars) was 64%, with predation reduced to zero for 53% of reporting producers in 1986. Variations in trustworthy, attentive and protective behavior of the dogs were breed-specific, and offer mechanisms for improving the system.

Granular Metal Films As Recording Media, Sy_Hwang Liou, C.L. Chien Feb 1988

Granular Metal Films As Recording Media, Sy_Hwang Liou, C.L. Chien

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

High-density recording media require materials with a high magnetization and high coercivity as well as chemical stability, wear, and corrosion resistance. We explore the potential of granular metal films for recording media. Films of Fe granules about 150 Å in size embedded in an amorphous SiO2 matrix exhibit coercivities as high as 3 kOe at low temperatures and 1.1 kOe at room temperature, and magnetizations of about 150 emu/g. The methods with which these materials are fabricated, the essential microstructure characterization, and magnetic measurements are described.

Analysis Of The Virulence Of Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants In The Rat Model System, Raul G. Barletta, Suzanne M. Michalek, Roy Curtis Iii Feb 1988

Analysis Of The Virulence Of Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants In The Rat Model System, Raul G. Barletta, Suzanne M. Michalek, Roy Curtis Iii

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Streptococcus mutans serotype c gtfA gene encodes a 55-kilodalton protein which catalyzes the synthesis of a small glucan (1.5 kilodaltons) from sucrose (J. P. Robeson, R. G. Barletta, and R. Curtiss III, J. Bacteriol. 153:211-221, 1983). To investigate the role of the GtfA enzyme in virulence, we constructed S. mutans gtfA mutants from three cariogenic serotype c strains. A plasmid that carried an erythromycin resistance determinant and an internal fragment of the gtfA gene but that was unable to replicate in streptococci was used to transform S. mutans. The erythromycin-resistant transformants carried a partial duplication of the internal …

Photographic Technique For Grass Seedling Root Systems, P. R. Newman, Lowell E. Moser Feb 1988

Photographic Technique For Grass Seedling Root Systems, P. R. Newman, Lowell E. Moser

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In descriptive studies of seedling root morphology a seedling root system must be clearly visible to develop clear photographs. A technique for photographing grass seedling root systems has been developed for morphological-developmental studies. Seedlings were carefully washed form the growing media and placed in a thin tank with two glass sides filled with water and with a grid pattern on one side. The lower stem and root system were immersed in the water where the natural buoyancy of the root system in water allowed the root to spread out, which improved visibility. Photographs were taken of the illuminated seedling root …

Perspectives On Process In Plant Virology, Myron K. Brakke

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The editors asked that I write a chapter on landmarks in plant virology, a topic that has been covered by several authors, for example by Henderson Smith (89), Bawden (9), Holmes (51), Markham (62), Harrison (44), Black (12), and Matthews (64). In 1 938, the first of these authors, Henderson Smith (89), divided his presidential address to the Society for Applied Biology between the control of plant-virus diseases and the nature of plant viruses. Progress since then has been much more rapid in the latter than in the former area. Henderson Smith could easily understand today's literature on losses, control, …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The testicular response of Ile-de-France rams actively immunized against estradiol (E2) was evaluated during both the ovine nonbreeding season (spring) and breeding season (autumn). Plasma concentrations of LH, FSH and testosterone were elevated in E2-immunized rams during both spring and autumn when compared with BSA-immunized controls. Testis weights were significantly elevated by E2 immunization and were characterized by greater interstitial cell volume, including Leydig cells, blood and lymph vessels, greater seminiferous tubule length, and greater numbers of leptotene spermatocytes and round spermatids. Neither Sertoli cell number, Sertoli cell nuclear volume nor testicular FSH receptor number …

Drought Management: The Role Of Near- Real Time Weather Data, Donald A. Wilhite, Kenneth G. Hubbard Jan 1988

Drought Management: The Role Of Near- Real Time Weather Data, Donald A. Wilhite, Kenneth G. Hubbard

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The ability to collect weather data in near-real time has improved because of technological advances, enabling weather data users to obtain more weather data over wider areas, and in a more timely fashion. The number of near-real time climate networks is increasing as new applications are found for climate data. More than fifteen states in the United States have established automated weather station networks. This paper presents an overview of recent developments in automated weather data collection in the United States and gives a detailed description of the network in Nebraska.

Near-real time weather data has many applications in agricultural …

The Rainbow And The Achromatic Telescope: Two Case Studies, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

From the history of science we can learn not only some science and some history, but also something about how science is done and how it interacts with technology.
The First case study chosen illustrates the development of an understanding of a phenomenon of nature-one that has been observed with awe and wonder for as long as man has walked the Earth, but has only been well understood in the last 200 years. Some of the greatest thinkers of all time have worked on the problems of the rainbow.
The second study shows how an important invention became possible only …

Spermiogenesis Of Eupyrene Sperm In Prepupae"} Pupae"} And Adults Of Heliothis Virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): An Ultrastructural Study, Leo E. Lachance, Geneva Olstad Jan 1988

Spermiogenesis Of Eupyrene Sperm In Prepupae"} Pupae"} And Adults Of Heliothis Virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): An Ultrastructural Study, Leo E. Lachance, Geneva Olstad

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

We have examined the ultrastructure of post meiotic eupyrene sperm maturation in testes of prepupae, pupae, and adult Heliothis virescens (F.) males. Emphasis was placed on the structures present in the elongating sperm tail. In each young spermatid, each cell has a nucleus, acrosome derivative, and numerous mitochondria in a large volume of cytoplasm. These mitochondria coalesce to form a body, the nebenkern. As the sperm cell begins to elongate, the nebenkern divides into two mitochondrial derivatives (MDs) of unequal size. The MDs have an outer and inner membrane, and as they elongate and coil in the sperm tail, cristae …

Descriptions Of Pupae Of South American Robber Flies (Diptera: Asilidae), D. Steve Dennisi, Lloyd Knutson

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The pupae of four South American species of robber flies, Diogmites vulgaris Carrera, Mallophora ruficauda (Wiedemann), Mallophora sylverii Macquart, and Triorla striola (F.), are described and illustrated. The pupae of these species are compared morphologically with those of North American species of the same genera. A key to pupae of Asilidae at the subfamily level is provided. Biological notes associated with the specimens examined and with those of Pseudorus distendens (Wiedemann) indicate that the larvae prey upon immature stages of Scarabaeidae (Dyscinetus rugifrons LeConte for D. vulgaris and M. sylverii, Cyclocephala signaticollis Burmeister for M. ruficauda, and a …

Cloning And Sequencing Of The Genes For Shiga Toxin From Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1, Nancy A. Strockbine, Matthew Jackson, Lawrence Sung, Randall Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien

United States Public Health Resources

The structural genes for Shiga toxin, designated stx A and stx B, were cloned from Shigella dysenteriae type 1 3818T, and a nucleotide sequence analysis was performed. Both stx A and stx B were present on a single transcriptional unit, with stx A preceding stx B. The molecular weight calculated for the processed A subunit was 32,225, while the molecular weight of the processed B subunit was 7,691. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences for Shiga toxin and Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) from Escherichia coli revealed that the genes for Shiga toxin and SLT-I were greater than 99% homologous; three nucleotide …

Symbols Of German-Russsian Ethnic Identity On The Northern Plains, Timothy J. Kloberdanz Jan 1988

Symbols Of German-Russsian Ethnic Identity On The Northern Plains, Timothy J. Kloberdanz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the past two decades, the subject of ethnicity has provoked popular interest and a proliferation of research. Scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds have described, analyzed, and reassessed the importance of ethnic identity in our modern society. Yet in 1980, following the long-awaited appearance of theHarvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, the basic question "What is ethnicity?" remained a perplexing one. The volume's editors admitted that "there is as yet no consensus about the precise meaning of ethnicity" since the distinguishing characteristics of ethnic groups seldom can be forced into neat conceptual categories. 1 While certain …

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope Jan 1988

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The recent controversy concerning the use and reference of so-called "generics" in the English language reveals the extent, if not the nature, of the political investment at stake in preserving the myth of generalized reference. Before I offer my data and observations regarding this myth, I wou1d like to emphasize that the arguments supporting generics, especially man, men and mankind, are not substantive, but political, and those who would like to maintain the use of masculine nouns as general references are relying on popular misconceptions, not linguistic data. Of course, if linguistic history provides clues to the outcome of this …

Kairomonal Stimulation Of Oviposition Into An Artificial Substrate By The Endoparasitoid Microplitis Croceipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), R. L. Tilden, S. M. Ferkovich Jan 1988

Kairomonal Stimulation Of Oviposition Into An Artificial Substrate By The Endoparasitoid Microplitis Croceipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), R. L. Tilden, S. M. Ferkovich

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Preparation of an artificial oviposition substrate (AOS) from agarose and host hemolymph for oviposition by a parasitic wasp, Microplitis croceipes (Cresson), is described. Natural hosts for this endoparasitoid are larvae of Heliothis spp. Infusion of hemolymph from Heliothis zea (Boddie) into a drop of solidified agar induced females of M. croceipes to oviposit into the material. Ovipositional response to dilution of host hemolymph was determined. The factor or factors that stimulated oviposition were moderately heat sensitive, dialyzable, and unaffected by treatment with protease or pancreatic trypsin or hexane extraction. Hemolymph from Manduca sexta (L.) was less effective than H. zea …

Insect Succession In A Stored-Corn Ecosystem In Southeast Georgia, R. T. Arbogast, M. A. Mullen Jan 1988

Insect Succession In A Stored-Corn Ecosystem In Southeast Georgia, R. T. Arbogast, M. A. Mullen

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Insect populations infesting a small bulk of corn stored in southeastern Georgia were followed for 8 yr by monthly sampling beginning 8 mo after the corn was placed in storage. The species composition of the insect community changed as the corn deteriorated. Nine species became dominant at some stage of succession. Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) was the dominant species when the first sample was taken. It was succeeded a month later by Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), which declined rapidly after 2 mo of dominance and died out during the third year. Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) was dominant at various times during the first …

Electronic Image Analysis Of Crop Residue Cover On Soil, George E. Meyer, Anthony Stepanek, David P. Shelton, Elbert C. Dickey Jan 1988

Electronic Image Analysis Of Crop Residue Cover On Soil, George E. Meyer, Anthony Stepanek, David P. Shelton, Elbert C. Dickey

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Classification procedures for using both black and white and color imaging systems were developed and tested for determination of percent residue cover on the soil surface from video and slide images. A spectral analysis of the image components was used for determining applicable wavelengths and filters. Color imagery provided an acceptable replacement for manual visual procedures. Black-and-white imagery also worked when appropriate blocking filters were used.

Metabolism As A Basis For Differential Atrazine Tolerance In Warm-Season Forage Grasses, Monte R. Weimer, Beth A. Swisher, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 1988

Metabolism As A Basis For Differential Atrazine Tolerance In Warm-Season Forage Grasses, Monte R. Weimer, Beth A. Swisher, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Atrazine metabolism was studied in four warmseason forage grasses to determine if metabolism was the basis for differential atrazine tolerance among the grasses. Big bluestem and switchgrass are atrazine tolerant while indiangrass and sideoats grama are atrazine susceptible in the seedling stage. Metabolism of atrazine in big bluestem and switchgrass occurred primarily by glutathione conjugation. The major metabolic product isolated from indiangrass and sideoats grama was the N-deethylated metabolite of atrazine. Glutathione conjugation by big bluestem and switchgrass occurred at a faster rate than N-dealkylation of atrazine in indiangrass and sideoats grama. Differential tolerance to atrazine among the …
