A plasmon generated by a swift charged particle constitutes a coherent excitation about the particle track. We discuss the physics of the plasmon in condensed matter and its effects on electron transport in liquid water. Criteria for the existence of the plasmon III a given substance, Its characteristics when generated by a swift charged particle, its representation in impact parameter space, and its decay into localized excitations are described. We describe how plasmon excitation and decay are implemented in our Monte Carlo code, OREC, and how track structure calculations are affected by this mode.
Subsurface Transport Of Contaminants, John E. Mccarthy, John M. Zachara
Subsurface Transport Of Contaminants, John E. Mccarthy, John M. Zachara
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Contaminants originating from human activities have entered the subsurface environment through waste disposal practices, spills, and land application of chemicals. The establishment of effective disposal and isolation procedures for chemical wastes, the protection of public health, and the amelioration of subsurface contamination rely on the ability to predict the velocity at which contaminants move through the vadose (unsaturated) and saturated zones. However, attempts to describe and predict contaminant transport cannot succeed if major pathways and mechanisms for transport are not defined.
Most approaches to describing and predicting the movement of contaminants treat groundwater as a two-phase system in which contaminants …

Improving Life Chances For Children In Nebraska, Mary Mcmanus Kluender, Robert L. Egbert
Improving Life Chances For Children In Nebraska, Mary Mcmanus Kluender, Robert L. Egbert
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
To a great extent, the potential of a child's future is determined by his or her earliest experiences, including education. The life chances of children, both those who are presumed to be at risk and those who are presumed to have a wide range of opportunities, are examined and discussed in this chapter. Factors that help or hinder life chances are described, and data that serve as indicators of life chances are addressed. National and state data about children considered to be at risk of school failure are reviewed. These data indicate that educators, administrators and policy makers should work …

Art education has traditionally been of low priority in Nebraska's-and the nation's -schools. Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) is a new approach that integrates the various facets of art education throughout the general curriculum. DBAE attempts to teach students critical reasoning skills so they may learn to make their own judgments rather than be manipulated through "technological image management." It also enhances the traditional art curriculum through multicultural study. Nebraska's Prairie Visions project can serve as a model to other states, which are increasingly recognizing the value of DBAE.

Nebraska Policy Choices (1989): Preface, Miles T. Bryant, Christine M. Reed, Patricia O'Connell
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
The eight chapters in Nebraska Policy Choices: Education represent the work of University of Nebraska faculty from both the Lincoln and Omaha campuses, as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center. These authors participated in a unique effort jointly sponsored by the University of Nebraska Central Administration, College of Education (University of Nebraska at Omaha), Teachers College (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), and Center for Public Affairs Research (University of Nebraska at Omaha). Unlike earlier volumes of Nebraska Policy Choices, the focus of this volume is on one critically important area: education policy.
Review Of Reclaimed, Graham Handley
Review Of Reclaimed, Graham Handley
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
When Middlemarch was being issued in Eight Parts from December 1871 until December 1872, there was a strong readership interest in the fact that Dorothea and Lydgate had made, in each instance, a wrong choice of marriage mate. It went farther than this, some readers even expressing the view that Dorothea and Lydgate would have been ideally suited. With Daniel Deronda, which was also issued in parts from February to September 1876, readership sympathy was also involved. There was much dissatisfaction in Daniel's forsaking of Gwendolen at the end ('I said I should be forsaken: says Gwendolen in her anguish) …

Romola On The American Stage, George V. Griffith
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
About George Eliot Americans were certain of two truths by the time of her death in 1880: she was a genius who was pushing the novel into a new terrain of seriousness, intense moral purpose, and artful design; she was also a glum realist in whose work characters were called to a high moral duty in a godless world without transcendent values. Lavish praise of her work from its first appearance in the United States in 1858 continued largely without qualification until the publication of Middlemarch in 1873. Throughout the seventies she was as frequently denounced, "gloom and doom" replacing …

Joint Venture Or Testy Alliance?: The Public Works Of Art Project In Minnesota, 1933-34, Thomas O'Sullivan
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Like many American painters of his generation, Syd Fossum left art school under the cloud of the Great Depression. The economic uncertainties of the 1930s only added to the dubious support a young painter in the Midwest might expect. But an unimagined opportunity launched Fossum and many others into unparalleled productivity as artists and self-respect as involved members of the art community and American society. Fossum's own reminiscences suggest the excitement of the moment. He recalled that in December 1933 he received a letter assigning him to the newly formed Public Works of Art Project (PWAP).
State Humanities Councils And Cultural Institutions On The Great Plains, Sarah Z. Rosenberg
State Humanities Councils And Cultural Institutions On The Great Plains, Sarah Z. Rosenberg
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
T his study covers the state humanities councils in the Great Plains for the four year period 1983-86. Biennial reports to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), upon which the study is based, are staggered for the convenience of NEH reviewers. As a result my data are either for 1983-84 or for 1985-86. I chose this time frame because by 1983 most state councils had been in existence for at least ten years and were past the years of experimentation and because the data available in these reports are presented consistently. I have included the ten Great Plains states-North …
Women's Responses To The Challenges Of Plains Living, Glenda Riley
Women's Responses To The Challenges Of Plains Living, Glenda Riley
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Women settlers on the Great Plains frontier, as on other frontiers, carried the primary responsibility for home and family. Not only wives and mothers, but all plainswomen, young or old, single or married, white or black, employed outside the home or not, were expected to attend to, or help with, domestic duties. Thus, women living on their own, with storekeeper fathers, with farmer husbands, or in any other circumstances devoted a large part of their time and energy to providing their households with food, clothing, and other goods or services, to maintaining houses both as family homes and as women's …
The Art Museum As Personal Statement: The Southwest Experience, Keith L. Bryant Jr
The Art Museum As Personal Statement: The Southwest Experience, Keith L. Bryant Jr
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The museum boom in this country since World War II has been easy to observe and document. Almost as many museums were constructed in the 1960s as in the previous two decades, and the erection or expansion of cultural palaces has continued into the 1980s. The rising importance of museums has been signaled not only by new buildings and massive additions but also by attendance figures. The leading public attraction in the United States is neither professional football nor baseball; it is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This overwhelming public response is not limited to the …

Opera Houses In Kansas, Nebraska, And The Dakotas: 1870-1920, Ronald L. Davis
Opera Houses In Kansas, Nebraska, And The Dakotas: 1870-1920, Ronald L. Davis
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
As the last frontier approached an end, nearly every town of any distinction on the Plains boasted an opera house. The term "opera house" was preferred over "theater" since opera was considered a highly respected art form rather than mere popular amusement, even though grand opera itself was seldom actually performed in the Great Plains. What the management offered on its stage depended primarily on the town's proximity to a railroad, which in the late nineteenth century served as the major link to the outside world. Whether or not opera troupes ever sang for local audiences, a town's opera house----on …
Playing God In Academe, Raymond J. Rodrigues
Playing God In Academe, Raymond J. Rodrigues
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In 1986, Alston Chase published his book Playing God in Yellowstone. In it, he argues that Yellowstone had never, in historic times, ever been in a truly natural state. He points out that when the early European and Anglo explorers first entered Yellowstone, fires were burning everywhere. The fires, he tells us, were set by the Indians in Yellowstone to drive game into areas where they could be trapped and killed. In setting those fires, the Indians were actually controlling and contributing to the ecological balance of the region.

Lb 90 And The Confrontation Clause: The Use Of Videotaped And In Camera Testimony In Criminal Trials To Accommodate Child Witnesses, Emily Campbell
Nebraska Law Review
Growing public awareness of the problems associated with the prosecution of sex abuse cases has led many states to alter their rules of evidence and criminal procedure. Part II of this Comment examines the content and history of LB 90, which now permits the use of videotaped testimony or in camera testimony of not only child victims of sexual abuse, but also of child victims or witnesses of other felonies, and compares it with similar statutes in other jurisdictions. Part III examines the Supreme Court's analysis of the principles underlying the confrontation clause and focuses on how various states have …

Three strains of Lactobacilus acidophilus (LA) were isolated from the feces of mature boars that were not being fed antibiotics from the Nebraska Gene Pool (NGP). All three LA isolates were screened in vitro for anticholesteremic and antimicrobial activities. One strain, LA16, caused the greatest reduction in cholesterol and inhibited both Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli the most. ♥

Trichome Development In Arabidopsis Thaliana. Ii. Lsolation And Complementation Of The Glabrous1 Gene, Patricia L. Herman, M. David Marks
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
We are using the formation of trichomes in Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system to study gene expression during cellular differentiation. To initiate the molecular characterization of this system, we tagged and isolated a gene that is specifically required for the development of the specialized trichome cell. We confirmed the identity of this gene, GLABROUS1 (GL1), by complementation. These results demonstrate that a crucial gene in a plant developmental pathway can be successfully identified by complementation.

Among the various types of artistic expression, portraits are probably considered the most approachable by the greatest number of people. And yet, upon closer consideration, it is evident that no amount of scrutiny on the part of the artist, or the viewer, can deliver the portrait from a fundamental limbo resulting from its dual referential and aesthetic functions. The portrait partakes of a variety of truths, but never resides within anyone verity. The philosophical debate about the nature of likeness has raged since the time of Plato, and remains unresolved.
The motivations and limitations of portraiture have changed over the …

In Vivo Formation Of Hybrid Toxins Comprising Shiga Toxin And The Shiga-Like Toxins And Role Of The B Subunit In Localization And Cytotoxic Activity, Debra L. Weinstein, Matthew P. Jackson, Liyanage P. Perera, Randall K. Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Shiga toxin, Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) and Shiga-like toxin II (SLT-H) are cell-associated cytotoxins that kill both Vero cells and HeLa cells, whereas Shiga-like toxin II variant (SLT-llv) is an extracellular cytotoxin that is more cytotoxic for Vero cells than for HeLa cells. The basis for these differences in cytotoxin localization and host cell specificity were examined in this study. The A and B subunit genes of Shiga toxin and the SLTs were recombined by two methods so that hybrid toxins would be formed in vivo. Complementation of heterologous subunits was accomplished by cloning the individual A and B subunit …
Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill
Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper examines Mari Sandoz' (1939) novel Capital City from the perspective of sociology. ‘I outline Sandoz' data collection methods and consider her use of ideal-type analysis and sociological imagination. From the perspective of literary critics it may be, as Helen Stauffer (1982: 131) judged, that Capital City "is not a successful novel." It is not my purpose, however, to contest the merit of Sandoz' work on literary grounds. Rather, I invoke the viewpoint of the sociologist and note the criteria on which I conclude that Capital City is a complex and well-executed sociological study.

Role Of Metabolites In The Reversible Light Activation Of Pyruvate,Orthophosphate Dikinase In Zea Mays Mesophyll Cells In Vivo, Chrissi A. Roeske, Raymond Chollet
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Whole leaf and mesophyll cell concentrations of pyruvate, phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP), ATP, and ADP were determined in Zea mays during the reversible light activation of pyruvate, orthophosphate dikinase in vivo. Mesophyll cell levels of the four metabolites were estimated by extrapolation from values in freeze-quenched leaf samples that were fractionated by differential filtration through nylon mesh nets (adapted from M Stitt, HW Heldt [1985] Planta 164: 179-188). During the 3 minutes required for complete light activation of dikinase, pyruvate levels in the mesophyll cell decreased (from 166 ± 15 to 64 ± 10 nanomoles per milligram of chlorophyll [nmol/mg Chi]) …

Cognitive Processes In The Curry Learning Style Framework As Measured By The Learning Style Profile And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Among Non-Majors In College Biology, Claudia Tarver Melear
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Curry's (1983) model of learning style framework with Claxton & Murrell's (1987) adaptations was used to study the profile of the non-major in a college biology course. The purpose of the study was to provide empirically derived data in both a qualitative and quantitative format of the non major (both successful and unsuccessful students) to improve the course. Over 600 students were administered the Learning Style Profile [(LSP) (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Indicator (MBTI) (NASSP) and the Myers-Briggs Type (Consulting Psychologists Press)] to determine the students' learning styles as a predictor for Success in the course. The MBTI …

Propagation Of Blowout Penstemon (Penstemon Haydenii S. Watson): Germination-Enhancing Treatments, Theresa R. Flessner, James L. Stubbendieck
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Development of germination-enhancing treatments will be essential for the recovery of Nebraska's only officially endangered plant species, blowout penstemon (Pensiemon haydenii S, Watson), Effects of cold-moist stratification, mechanical or chemical scarification, and presence or absence of light in combination with alternating temperature regimes on seed germination of blowout penstemon was determined by laboratory studies. Stratified seeds exhibited greater mean germination percentages (21 %) than nonstratified seeds (8%). Effects of mechanical scarification on germination varied with trial. Seeds chemically scarified with concentrated sulfuric acid exhibited greater mean germination percentages (48%) than controls (12%); such scarification may substitute for the effective, …
