Coprolite Analysis: A Biological Perspective On Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr.
Coprolite Analysis: A Biological Perspective On Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The most remarkable dietary remains recoverable from archaeological contexts are coprolites. Coprolites are desiccated or mineralized feces that are preserved in sheltered and open sites in arid regions, primarily in the New World. These dietary remains are remarkable from several perspectives. They typically contain a variety of macroscopic and microscopic remains that form interrelated data sets for the reconstruction of diets. Because contexts containing coprolites are typified by excellent preservation, the remains coprolites contain tend to be in better states of preservation than dietary remains recovered from nonfecal deposits. Coprolites also contain the well-preserved remains of intestinal parasites and pathogens …

The Gettysburg Address As Written By Law Students Taking An Exam, C. Steven Bradford
The Gettysburg Address As Written By Law Students Taking An Exam, C. Steven Bradford
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
A Cameroonian proverb states that "[h]e who asks questions cannot avoid the answers,"' and, unfortunately, that proverb applies to law professors. At the end of each semester, law professors must endure the agony of creation that Mary Shelley's Dr. Frankenstein had to experience only once in his life. We are horrified to see the monsters we have created, so different from what we intended. The joy of teaching is the constant challenge and interaction with students in the classroom; the agony of teaching is reading what some of those same students have written on their examinations.
Of course, not all …

Track Structure Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Judy L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo
Track Structure Model Of Cell Damage In Space Flight, Robert Katz, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Judy L. Shinn, Duc M. Ngo
Robert Katz Publications
Cell damage by high linear energy transfer (LET) radiations has been described by a phenomenological model (track theory) for more than 20 years. With track theory, molecules of biological significance (dry enzymes and viruses) act as one-hit detectors. Recent additions to tire class of one-hit detectors arc Escherichia coil B, and single- and double-strand breaks in SV-40 virus in EO buffer, where indirect effects predominate. The response of cells (survival, transformation, and chromosome aberration) to these radiations is typically described by a four-parameter model whose numerical values are determined from the equations of the theory being fit to experimental …

G92-1069 The Poinsettia, Jay Fitzgerald, Don Steinegger
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Growing poinsettias so that they rebloom is easier if you understand and follow some basic horticultureicultural and pest management procedures.
Poinsettias are the most popular decorative plants for the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons. The newer cultivars often remain colorful until spring and do not have to be discarded when they finish blooming. Following a few basic principles can bring the plants back into full bloom.
The poinsettia Euphorbia pulcherrima is a native to the area around Taxco, Mexico, and was introduced to the United States by Joel R. Poinsett, the first United States ambassador to Mexico. Poinsettia or …
Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack
Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Disorders of pervasive social anxiety and inhibition are divided into 2 categories, generalized social phobia (GSP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD). We explored the discriminative validity of this categorization by examining the comorbidity of GSP and APD and by comparing these groups on anxiety level, social skills, dysfunctional cognitions, impairment in functioning, and presence of concurrent disorders. Results from 23 subjects showed high comorbidity of the 2 diagnoses: All subjects who met criteria for APD also met criteria for GSP. APD was associated with greater social anxiety, impairment in functioning, and comorbidity with other psychopathology, but no differences in social …

G92-1101 Dairy 10-Point Quality Control Program--Mastitis Treatment Records, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide presents a mastitis treatment record keeping system that will help to reduce the chances of having adulterated milk enter the milk tank.
Starting July 1, 1993, the national Milk and Dairy Beef Quality Assurance Program will become effective. This program is a direct result of media attention concerning milk quality. It also reflects a growing consumer concern with drug residues in the nation's food supply chain. The American Veterinary Medical Association and National Milk Producers Federation responded to these concerns by developing a ten-point Milk and Dairy Beef Residue Prevention Protocol.

Karyotype And Identification Of Sex In Two Endangered Crane Species, Carll Goodpasture, Gustavo Seluja, George Gee
Karyotype And Identification Of Sex In Two Endangered Crane Species, Carll Goodpasture, Gustavo Seluja, George Gee
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
A laboratory procedure for sex identification of monomorphic birds was developed using modern cytological methods of detecting chromosome abnormalities in human amniotic fluid samples. A pin feather is taken from a pre-fledging bird for tissue culture and karyotype analysis. Through this method, the sex was identified and the karyotype described of the whooping crane (Grus americana) and the Mississippi sandhill crane (G. canadensis pulla). Giemsa-stained karyotypes of these species showed an identical chromosome constitution with 2n = 78 ± 2. However, differences in the amount of centromeric heterochromatin were observed in the Mississippi sandhill crane when …
Environmental Engineering Options For Managing Contaminated Sediment, Norman R. Francingues. Jr.
Environmental Engineering Options For Managing Contaminated Sediment, Norman R. Francingues. Jr.
United States Army: Publications
Technologies that have been identified as feasible for remediating contaminated sediment and are peing considered for demonstration in the Great Lakes are presented in this paper. This review is limited to the components and technologies required for removal and management of highly contaminated sediment. Over two hundred technology process options were reviewed for effectiveness, implementability and costs. However, few of these processes have actually been applied to contaminated sediment on a full scale. Most of the technology evaluations have been conducted at the bench scale with limited data available for pilot scale assessment. Therefore, further testing and evaluation of the …

Multiplication Of Four Penstemon Species In Vitro, Dale T. Lindgren, Brent Mccown
Multiplication Of Four Penstemon Species In Vitro, Dale T. Lindgren, Brent Mccown
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Penstemon (beard tongue) is a native genus of U.S. wildflower that is used for landscape plants (Lindgren, 1984a, 1984b, 1990), for cut flowers (Lindgren, 1986), and for ecological studies (Stubbendieck et al., 1982). Tissue culture techniques could be useful for propagating cultivars and species in this genus as some do not breed true from seed, require special seed germination conditions, or are difficult to propagate using other vegetative methods (Lindgren, 1984b, 1990; Stubbendieck et al., 1982). Penstemon haydenii is also the only listed endangered plant species in Nebraska.
The Penstemon spp. P. digitalis Nutt. ‘Husker Red’ (Lindgren, 1984b); P. grandiflorus …

The antigenic relatedness of Escherichia coli 0157 and four sorbitol-negative species of the genus Escherichia was examined. Isolates of Escherichia hermannii, E. fergusonii, E. vulneris, and E. blattae were tested in the tube agglutination assay by using polyclonal antisera and in the slide agglutination assay by using latex reagents. Only four isolates (17%) of E. hermannii exhibited serological cross-reactivity.
Fragments Of Everyday Life, Karen Jenson Rutherford
Fragments Of Everyday Life, Karen Jenson Rutherford
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
In my work I am concerned with the general concepts of movement and change and specifically with the profoundness of the idea that we are touched by fiber from the moment of birth until the moment of death. This accessibility of textiles combined with the vast historical foundation of textiles allows for abundant exploration as an artist.
In her book, On Weaving, Anni Albers (1965) defines weaving as "the making of a pliable plane" (19). She further describes six structures used to create this pliable plane. They are interlacing (which we normally think of as weaving), plaiting or braiding, looping, …
Dissociation Quotients Of Malonic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 100°C1, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer
Dissociation Quotients Of Malonic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 100°C1, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The first and second molal dissociation quotients of malonic acid were measured potentiometrically in a concentration cell fitted with hydrogen electrodes. The hydrogen ion molality of malonic acidJbimalonate solutions was measured relative to a standard aqueous HCI solution from 0 to 100°C over 25° intervals at five ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCl). The molal dissociation quotients and available literature data were treated in the all anionic form by a seven-term equation. This treatment yielded the following thermodynamic quantities for the first acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C: log K1a = -2.852 ± 0.003. ΔH1̊a = …
Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams
Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
This adaption was not for the academic, the scholar or the purist. As none of these, I admit that, with reservations, I enjoyed the film.
There were some very good things about it. The setting was very attractive (Stanway in the Cotswolds for much of the action because it is one of the least changed parts of England) and the photography superb, particularly in the Chase when the sunlight filtering through the trees made an extremely pretty picture. The fight between Arthur and Adam was well staged. lain Glen as Adam portrayed the strength and integrity of the character convincingly; …
Review Of The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions & Government Policies And Lost Harvests: Prairie Indian Reserve Farmers And Government Policy, Paul A. Olson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Both of these books concern the force of myth. James Clifton's The Invented Indian, a book put together by Clifton with sixteen other authors, represents an account of the collaboration between Native Americans and whitesanthropologists, poets, do-gooders, and government policymakers-to create a stereotypical "Indian" and an equally stereotypical history of Indians. The stereotypes are conveyed as "facts" in school texts, the media, and "scholarship," i.e., that perhaps hundreds of millions of Indians lived in America when Columbus came, that Pocahontas saved the Virginians and Squanto the Pilgrims, that the United States Constitution derives from the Iroquois, that Indians worshipped Mother …
The Role Of Canada's Prairie Provinces In Constitutional And Parliamentary Reform, Howard Cody
The Role Of Canada's Prairie Provinces In Constitutional And Parliamentary Reform, Howard Cody
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Canada's federation always has been tentative. This motley collection of French and English speakers, multiculturals and Native peoples, extended across a narrow ribbon of land just above the border with the United States, seems eternally fated to endure tension and uncertainty concerning its national identity and political institutions. This uncertainty may now have reached its highest point in Canada's history. The 1990 failure of the Meech Lake constitutional accord, which was intended to bring Quebec voluntarily into Canada's 1982 constitution, has inspired an unprecedented quest for new constitutional provisions acceptable to Canadians throughout the country. 1 In this paper I …

Review Of The West As America: Reinterpreting Images Of The Frontier, 1820-1920, Stephen C. Behrendt
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This rich collection of essays is intellectually substantial, culturally significant, and much overdue. One of the least appreciated phenomena of American culture is its remarkable history of self-fashioning. The American continent was settled by European immigrants for a variety of reasons over some four centuries, and each wave of settlers contributed to the burgeoning mythology of the New World its own set of self-fulfilling prophecies. "America" was--and to a significant extent still is--a largely European construct, a cultural matrix whose outlines emerged and evolved often re-actively as individuals and groups found their expectations challenged by the stark realities of the …

Review Of Sterling's Carrie: Mrs. J. Sterling Morton, Polly P. Duryea
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Margaret V. Ott has given a valuable gift to the pioneer descendants living close to the banks of the Big Muddy. From detailed journals, letters, and diaries, she traces the lives of the J. Sterling Morton family as they construct their home, Arbor Lodge, on the Morton Ranch near Nebraska City. Many in my transitional generation will find elements of their own history in Mrs. Ott's fictionalized biography, Sterling's Carrie.
