Assessing Functional Biodiversity For The Future Of Plants, Planet, And People, Ali Loker Mar 2023

Assessing Functional Biodiversity For The Future Of Plants, Planet, And People, Ali Loker

Doctor of Plant Health Program: Dissertations and Student Research

Biodiversity plays a critical role in supporting life in global ecosystems and its links to ecosystem services and sustainability are recognized by scientific and non-scientific communities. Growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity is accelerated by discussions of its loss, and how to design interventions to conserve and mitigate a biodiversity crisis. Stakeholders are funding and implementing assessment strategies at various scales to help direct conservation efforts. There is also growing interest in measuring and communicating biodiversity outcomes.

Functional biodiversity characterizes the multiplicity of life forms into groups based on their diverse contributions to natural and agro-ecosystems. Assessing functional biodiversity …

The Impact Of Parent Math Anxiety On Parent Homework Help Behaviors, Makenzie P. Starlin Mar 2023

The Impact Of Parent Math Anxiety On Parent Homework Help Behaviors, Makenzie P. Starlin

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Math anxiety is commonly defined as negative feelings toward mathematics or solving mathematics problems (Dowker et al., 2016). Research indicates that math anxiety can influence parenting behaviors during homework interactions, which can involve behaviors that are autonomy supportive, or allow the child to initiate the homework task, or controlling, which does not allow the child to be actively engaged (Retanal et al., 2021) In particular, autonomy support behaviors allow children to work through homework on their own, whereas control behaviors do not allow children to work through the homework on their own and instead involve parents overseeing the homework help …

Metabolic Network Modeling To Unravel The Impact Of Copper Deficiency And High-Fat Diet On Liver Metabolism, Naeun Lee Mar 2023

Metabolic Network Modeling To Unravel The Impact Of Copper Deficiency And High-Fat Diet On Liver Metabolism, Naeun Lee

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fatty liver disease is a common health problem caused by an imbalance in the intake, utilization, and distribution of energy. High-fat and high-carbohydrate diets have been identified as major risk factors for fatty liver disease. Other contributors and modifiers can also influence the development of liver damage. Intriguingly, inappropriate copper (Cu) levels in the diet and organs are associated with fatty liver disease, though the exact way in which Cu deficiency or toxicity contributes to metabolic issues is not yet clear. Cu is necessary for several biological processes, including energy production and redox balance. Further research should be taken to …

Global Three-Dimensional Water Vapor Feature-Tracking For Horizontal Winds Using Hyperspectral Infrared Sounder Data From Overlapped Tracks Of Two Satellites, Amir Ouyed, Nadia Smith, Xubin Zeng, Thomas Galarneau Jr., Hui Su, Ross D. Dixon Feb 2023

Global Three-Dimensional Water Vapor Feature-Tracking For Horizontal Winds Using Hyperspectral Infrared Sounder Data From Overlapped Tracks Of Two Satellites, Amir Ouyed, Nadia Smith, Xubin Zeng, Thomas Galarneau Jr., Hui Su, Ross D. Dixon

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The lack of measurements of three-dimensional (3D) distribution of horizontal wind vectors is a major challenge in atmospheric science. Here, we develop an algorithm to retrieve winds for nine pressure levels at 1° grid spacing from 70°N to 70°S. The retrieval is done by tracking water vapor from the hyperspectral Cross-track Infrared Sounder aboard two polar satellites (NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP) that have overlapped tracks separated by 50 min. We impose a gross error check by flagging retrievals that are too different from ERA-5 reanalysis. Testing the algorithm for the first week of January and July 2020 indicates that our algorithm …

Viscoelastic Properties Of Human Facial Skin And Comparisons With Facial Prosthetic Elastomers, Mark W. Beatty, Alvin G. Wee, D. B. Marx, Lauren Ridgway, Bobby Simetich, Thiago Carvalho De Sousa, Kevin Vakilzadian, Joel Schulte Feb 2023

Viscoelastic Properties Of Human Facial Skin And Comparisons With Facial Prosthetic Elastomers, Mark W. Beatty, Alvin G. Wee, D. B. Marx, Lauren Ridgway, Bobby Simetich, Thiago Carvalho De Sousa, Kevin Vakilzadian, Joel Schulte

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Prosthesis discomfort and a lack of skin-like quality is a source of patient dissatisfaction with facial prostheses. To engineer skin-like replacements, knowledge of the differences between facial skin properties and those for prosthetic materials is essential. This project measured six viscoelastic properties (percent laxity, stiffness, elastic deformation, creep, absorbed energy, and percent elasticity) at six facial locations with a suction device in a human adult population equally stratified for age, sex, and race. The same properties were measured for eight facial prosthetic elastomers currently available for clinical usage. The results showed that the prosthetic materials were 1.8 to 6.4 times …

How Administration Stakes And Settings Affect Student Behavior And Performance On A Biology Concept Assessment, Crystal Uminski, Joanna K. Hubbard, Brian A. Couch Feb 2023

How Administration Stakes And Settings Affect Student Behavior And Performance On A Biology Concept Assessment, Crystal Uminski, Joanna K. Hubbard, Brian A. Couch

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Biology instructors use concept assessments in their courses to gauge student understanding of important disciplinary ideas. Instructors can choose to administer concept assessments based on participation (i.e., lower stakes) or the correctness of responses (i.e., higher stakes), and students can complete the assessment in an in-class or out-of-class setting. Different administration conditions may affect how students engage with and perform on concept assessments, thus influencing how instructors should interpret the resulting scores. Building on a validity framework, we collected data from 1578 undergraduate students over 5 years under five different administration conditions. We did not find significant differences in scores …

Bernstein-Sato Theory For Singular Rings In Positive Characteristic, Jack Jack, Luis Núñez-Betancourt, Eamon Quinlan-Gallego Feb 2023

Bernstein-Sato Theory For Singular Rings In Positive Characteristic, Jack Jack, Luis Núñez-Betancourt, Eamon Quinlan-Gallego

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The Bernstein-Sato polynomial is an important invariant of an element or an ideal in a polynomial ring or power series ring of characteristic zero, with interesting connections to various algebraic and topological aspects of the singularities of the vanishing locus. Work of Mustaţă, later extended by Bitoun and the third author, provides an analogous Bernstein-Sato theory for regular rings of positive characteristic.

In this paper, we extend this theory to singular ambient rings in positive characteristic. We establish finiteness and rationality results for Bernstein-Sato roots for large classes of singular rings, and relate these roots to other classes of numerical …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at √ s = 13 TeV with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb−1. The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum pT > 30 GeV is measured for different regions of the Z boson’s pT(Z ), from lower than 10 GeV to higher than 100 GeV. The azimuthal correlation Δφ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions …

A Collection Of Calculus Lesson Plans: Deriving The 'Why' Behind Derivatives, Kasey Brabec Feb 2023

A Collection Of Calculus Lesson Plans: Deriving The 'Why' Behind Derivatives, Kasey Brabec

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The traditional mathematics classroom is led with a focus on procedural understanding, with deep conceptual understanding considered to be unimportant or too difficult to teach within the allotted time. Both levels of understanding are important mathematical competencies, as it is rare for either of them to function well without accessibility to the other. The disparity between conceptual understanding and procedural understanding in the mathematics classroom is no larger than in courses like Calculus. This project is a collection of fifteen lesson plans constructed with an emphasis on conceptual understanding and the connectivity of Calculus. Each lesson plan’s overview contains the …

The data were contributed by researchers affiliated with 59 institutions worldwide and come from …

Importance Of Snowmelt On Soil Nitrate Leaching To Groundwater – A Model Study, Sahila Beegum, Arindam Malakar, Chittaranjan Ray, Daniel D. Snow Feb 2023

Importance Of Snowmelt On Soil Nitrate Leaching To Groundwater – A Model Study, Sahila Beegum, Arindam Malakar, Chittaranjan Ray, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The movement of nitrate to surface water bodies during snow accumulation and melting has been extensively studied, but there are only limited studies on the influence of snow processes on nitrate leaching to groundwater. The present study investigated the impact of snow processes on nitrate leaching to groundwater based on a simulation modeling approach using HYDRUS-1D. HYDRUS-1D model has a temperature threshold-based snow model in addition to water, solute, and heat simulation components. The snow component in HYDRUS-1D was previously not applied to snow simulation studies since the method does not consider a detailed physical and process-based representation of snow …

Journal Of Dairy Science® 2022 Editorial Report, Paul J. Kononoff

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In 2022, the 105th volume of the Journal of Dairy Science was published. As we review the journal’s last year, it may be useful to reflect on the purpose of scientific publishing. This can be simply stated as the dissemination of results that extends knowledge to open the door for new concepts or advances in the field (Chan, 2018). Similar to other journals, in addition to original research articles, Journal of Dairy Science also publishes invited reviews and other paper types to pursue this purpose. The journal also has other valuable roles. For example, scientific journals actively support authors in …

Tri-Plane Diagrams For Simple Surfaces In S4, Manuel Aragón, Zack Dooley, Alexander Goldman, Yucong Lei, Isaiah Martinez, Nicholas Meyer, Devon Peters, Scott Warrander, Ana Wright, Alex Zupan Feb 2023

Tri-Plane Diagrams For Simple Surfaces In S4, Manuel Aragón, Zack Dooley, Alexander Goldman, Yucong Lei, Isaiah Martinez, Nicholas Meyer, Devon Peters, Scott Warrander, Ana Wright, Alex Zupan

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Meier and Zupan proved that an orientable surface K in S4 admits a tri-plane diagram with zero crossings if and only if K is unknotted, so that the crossing number of K is zero. We determine the minimal crossing numbers of nonorientable unknotted surfaces in S4, proving that c(Pn,m) = max{1, |n−m|}, where Pn,m denotes the connected sum of n unknotted projective planes with normal Euler number +2 and m unknotted projective planes with normal Euler number −2. In addition, we convert Yoshikawa’s table of knotted surface ch-diagrams to tri-plane …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Mitigating human-caused mortality for large carnivores is a pressing global challenge for wildlife conservation. However, mortality is almost exclusively studied at local (within-population) scales creating a mismatch between our understanding of risk and the spatial extent most relevant to conservation and management of wide-ranging species. Here, we quantified mortality for 590 radio-collared mountain lions statewide across their distribution in California to identify drivers of human-caused mortality and investigate whether human-caused mortality is additive or compensatory. Human-caused mortality, primarily from conflict management and vehicles, exceeded natural mortality despite mountain lions being protected from hunting. Our data indicate that human-caused mortality is …

Search For The Higgs Boson Decay To A Pair Of Electrons In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search is presented for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons (e+e−) in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The analysis uses event categories targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. The observed upper limit on the Higgs boson branching fraction to an electron pair is 3.0 × 10−4 (3.0 × 10−4 expected) at the 95% confidence level, which …

Exhumed Fluvial Landforms Reveal Evolution Of Late Eocene– Pliocene Rivers On The Central And Northern Great Plains, Usa, Jesse T. Korus, Robert Matthew Joeckel Feb 2023

Exhumed Fluvial Landforms Reveal Evolution Of Late Eocene– Pliocene Rivers On The Central And Northern Great Plains, Usa, Jesse T. Korus, Robert Matthew Joeckel

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Cenozoic strata on the Great Plains are the products of a long- lived, continental sediment routing system, and yet strikingly little is known about these ancient rivers. This article details the discovery of ~3100 fluvial ridges—erosionally inverted alluvial- fan, channel- fill, channel- belt, and valley- fill deposits—extending from the Rocky Mountain front to the eastern margin of the Great Plains. The direct detection of these channel bodies reveals new insights into late Eocene– Pliocene drainage evolution. Late Eocene– Oligocene streams were morphologically diverse. Alluvial fans adjacent to the Rocky Mountain front changed eastward to parallel or downstream- divergent, fixed, single- …

Erratum: Measurement Of Prompt And Nonprompt Charmonium Suppression In Pbpb Collisions At 5.02 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

In Fig. 3, the y axis titles were mistakenly written showing a single-differential cross section in either dimuon pT or rapidity, when in fact the cross section is normalized by both the pT and rapidity ranges used for a given measurement point. The corrected version is shown in the new Fig. 3 provided below.

Effects Of Intermixing And Oxygen Vacancies On A Two-Dimensional Electron Gas At The Polar (Tbsco3/Ktao) (001) Interface, Bhubnesh Lama, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Tula R. Paudel

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

3d-5d perovskite oxides, ABO3 (where A and B are 3d or 5d elements), form polar surfaces in the (001)- stacked thin films. As a result, the polar-polar (001) interface between two ABO3 insulators could create polar discontinuity potentially producing a two-dimensional electron gas of higher density and stronger spatial localization compared to the widely studied polar-nonpolar oxide interfaces, such as (001) LaAlO3/SrTiO3. Here, as a model system, we explore the interface between polar (001) TbScO3 and polar (001) KTaO3 using first-principles density functional theory. We find that the …

Occupancy And Abundance Of A West African Mangabey Species (Cercocebus Atys Audebert, 1797) In Forest Patch Habitat, Kellie Laity, April Conway, Sonia M. Hernandez, John P. Carroll, Dessalegn Ejigu

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Sooty mangabeys are Old World primates from the Upper Guinea Rainforests of West Africa. They suffer from habitat degradation due to deforestation and hunting for the bush-meat trade. Tiwai Island and adjacent small islands are a small protected area surrounded by the Moa River that is known for its high diversity of primate species. We evaluated the occupancy and abundance of sooty mangabeys on Tiwai Island and the surrounding islands using camera traps during 2008–2011. Over two seasons, we obtained a naïve occupancy rate of 0.77 for Tiwai Island but only 0.19 for surrounding smaller islands. We used Abundance-Induced Heterogeneity …

Drought Stress Prediction And Propagation Using Time Series Modeling On Multimodal Plant Image Sequences, Sruti Das Choudhury, Sinjoy Saha, Ashok Samal, Anastasios Mazis, Tala Awada Feb 2023

Drought Stress Prediction And Propagation Using Time Series Modeling On Multimodal Plant Image Sequences, Sruti Das Choudhury, Sinjoy Saha, Ashok Samal, Anastasios Mazis, Tala Awada

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The paper introduces two novel algorithms for predicting and propagating drought stress in plants using image sequences captured by cameras in two modalities, i.e., visible light and hyperspectral. The first algorithm, VisStressPredict, computes a time series of holistic phenotypes, e.g., height, biomass, and size, by analyzing image sequences captured by a visible light camera at discrete time intervals and then adapts dynamic time warping (DTW), a technique for measuring similarity between temporal sequences for dynamic phenotypic analysis, to predict the onset of drought stress. The second algorithm, HyperStressPropagateNet, leverages a deep neural network for temporal stress propagation using hyperspectral imagery. …

Leaf-Counting In Monocot Plants Using Deep Regression Models, Xinyan Xie, Yufeng Ge, Harkamal Walia, Jinliang Yang, Hongfeng Yu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Leaf numbers are vital in estimating the yield of crops. Traditional manual leaf-counting is tedious, costly, and an enormous job. Recent convolutional neural network-based approaches achieve promising results for rosette plants. However, there is a lack of effective solutions to tackle leaf counting for monocot plants, such as sorghum and maize. The existing approaches often require substantial training datasets and annotations, thus incurring significant overheads for labeling. Moreover, these approaches can easily fail when leaf structures are occluded in images. To address these issues, we present a new deep neural network-based method that does not require any effort to label …

Population Dynamics Of A Long-Term Selection Experiment In White Plymouth Rock Chickens Selected For Low Or High Body Weight, S. J. Harrison, P. B. Siegel, C. F. Honaker, Ronald M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The population dynamics of 2 lines of chickens from a long-term (59 generations) selection experiment were assessed based on pedigree data. These lines were propagated from phenotypic selection for low and high 8-wk BW in White Plymouth Rock chickens. Our objective was to determine whether the 2 lines maintained similar population structures over the selection horizon to allow meaningful comparisons of their performance data. A complete pedigree of 31,909 individuals, consisting of 102 founders, 1,064 from the parental generation, and 16,245 low weight (LWS) and 14,498 high weight (HWS) select chickens, was available. Inbreeding (F …

Eeg Decoding Of Finger Numeral Configurations With Machine Learning, Roya Salehzadeh, Brian Rivera, Kaiwen Man, Nader Jalili, Firat Soylu Feb 2023

Eeg Decoding Of Finger Numeral Configurations With Machine Learning, Roya Salehzadeh, Brian Rivera, Kaiwen Man, Nader Jalili, Firat Soylu

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In this study, we used multivariate decoding methods to study processing differences between canonical (montring and count) and noncanonical finger numeral configurations (FNCs). While previous research investigated these processing differences using behavioral and event-related potentials (ERP) methods, conventional univariate ERP analyses focus on specific time intervals and electrode sites and fail to capture broader scalp distribution and EEG frequency patterns. To address this issue a supervised learning classifier—support vector machines (SVM)—was used to decode ERP scalp distributions and alpha-band power for montring, counting, and noncanonical FNCs (for integers 1 to 4). The SVM was used to test whether the numerical …

Emergenet: A Novel Deep-Learning Based Ensemble Segmentation Model For Emergence Timing Detection Of Coleoptile, Aankit Das, Sruti Das Choudhury, Amit Kumar Das, Ashok Samal, Tala Awada

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The emergence timing of a plant, i.e., the time at which the plant is first visible from the surface of the soil, is an important phenotypic event and is an indicator of the successful establishment and growth of a plant. The paper introduces a novel deep-learning based model called EmergeNet with a customized loss function that adapts to plant growth for coleoptile (a rigid plant tissue that encloses the first leaves of a seedling) emergence timing detection. It can also track its growth from a time-lapse sequence of images with cluttered backgrounds and extreme variations in illumination. EmergeNet is a …

Decomposition Rate As An Emergent Property Of Optimal Microbial Foraging, Stefano Manzoni, Arjun Chakrawal, Glenn Ledder Feb 2023

Decomposition Rate As An Emergent Property Of Optimal Microbial Foraging, Stefano Manzoni, Arjun Chakrawal, Glenn Ledder

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Decomposition kinetics are fundamental for quantifying carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Several theories have been proposed to construct process-based kinetics laws, but most of these theories do not consider that microbial decomposers can adapt to environmental conditions, thereby modulating decomposition. Starting from the assumption that a homogeneous microbial community maximizes its growth rate over the period of decomposition, we formalize decomposition as an optimal control problem where the decomposition rate is a control variable. When maintenance respiration is negligible, we find that the optimal decomposition kinetics scale as the square root of the substrate concentration, resulting …

  1. Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife can threaten vulnerable host populations. Actions targeting habitat improvements to aid population resilience and recovery may be beneficial long-term strategies, yet testing the efficacy of such strategies before major conservation investments are made can be challenging.

  2. The disease white-nose syndrome (WNS) has caused severe declines in several species of North American hibernating bats. We tested a novel conservation approach targeted at improving foraging conditions near bat hibernacula by experimentally manipulating insect density in the pre-hibernation fattening period and spring emergence recovery period. We measured foraging (feeding buzzes) and echolocation activity of little brown bats Myotis …

Intraguild Predation Is Increased In Areas Of Low Prey Diversity In A Generalist Predator Community, Stella F. Uiterwaal, Amber J. Squires, Bennett A. Grappone, Brian Dillard, Ariadne Castaneda, Sora L. Kim, John P. Delong

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

  1. Niche differentiation and intraguild predation (IGP) can allow ecologically similar species to coexist, although it is unclear which coexistence mechanism predominates in consumer communities. Until now, a limited ability to quantify diets from metabarcoding data has precluded the use of sequencing data to determine the relative importance of these mechanisms.

  2. Here, we pair a recent metabarcoding quantification approach with stable isotope analysis to examine diet composition in a wolf spider community.

  3. We compare the prevalence of resource partitioning and IGP in these spiders and test whether factors that influence foraging performance, including individual identity, morphology, prey community and environmental conditions, …
