Predation Thresholds For Reintroduction Of Native Avifauna Following Suppression Of Invasive Brown Treesnakes On Guam, Robert M. Mcelderry, Eben H. Paxton, Andre V. Nguyen, Shane R. Siers
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The brown treesnake (BTS) (Boiga irregularis) invasion on Guåhan (in English, Guam) led to the extirpation of nearly all native forest birds. In recent years, methods have been developed to reduce BTS abundance on a landscape scale. To help assess the prospects for the successful reintroduction of native birds to Guåhan following BTS suppression, we modeled bird population persistence based on their life history characteristics and relative sensitivity to BTS predation. We constructed individual-based models and simulated BTS predation in hypothetical founding populations for each of seven candidate bird species. We represented BTS predation risk in two steps: …

There may be few stories in the annals of wildlife management that are as dramatic as the near demise and comeback of the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes). Endemic only to North America, this charming little carnivore found only in the continent’s central grasslands was hardly known to science until the mid-20th century. By then, vast colonies of the prey it depended on for food and shelter, the prairie dog (Cynomys spp.), had been wiped out through disease (sylvatic plague) and an agricultural industry with little tolerance for burrowing and grazing rodents. At its low point, the species’ …

Active Learning And Student Achievement: A Matter Of Space, Experiences, Or Pedagogy?, Justin Bruner, Rebecca Affoo, Angela M. Dietsch
United States Public Health Resources
The goal of this study was to contribute to research on active learning by addressing the problem of disentangling the effects of classroom architecture, student characteristics, and pedagogical design as they relate to student achievement. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design where data was collected on student perceptions of their classroom, their experience in the course, and the pedagogy of the instructor, then analyzed with respect to the course grade. Results indicate that neither student perceptions of the classroom spaces nor the spaces themselves had an impact on course grade, but the pedagogy employed by the instructor and student experiences …

How Do Consumers’ Beliefs About Product Price, Taste, And Health Affect Attention To Health-Differentiated Product-Sets?, Henriette Gitungwa, Christopher R. Gustafson
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Objectives: Consumers facemyriad food products in supermarkets, obviating consideration of all options. Consumers are likely to direct scarce attention to products they believe will provide them the best outcome. However, consumers may hold inaccurate beliefs— particularly about health attributes which can lead them to omit items from consideration that they would have optimally considered We examine how consumers’ beliefs about the relative price, taste, and healthiness of food product sets affect the healthiness of the set of products they consider.
Conclusions: Believes about relative differences in nutritional quality of foods importantly influence consideration of products, potentially perpetuating misconceptions about relative …

In this paper, we propose a mathematical and computational model for the GBM initiating of recurring focus as a quasi-spherical absorbing receiver considering the irregular shape as a Bernoulli trial process that accounts for the uncontrollable tumor growth over an initial spherical surface. Our results show that when GBM grow to irregular quasi-sphere shapes, they will increase the channel capacity, which is fully aligned with the evolution and configuration of GSC niches in GBM cultures.

ABSTRACT Trophic interactions between microbes are postulated to determine whether a host microbiome is healthy or causes predisposition to disease. Two abundant taxa, the Gram-negative heterotrophic bacterium Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and the methanogenic archaeon Methanobrevibacter smithii, are proposed to have a synergistic metabolic relationship. Both organisms play vital roles in human gut health; B. thetaiotaomicron assists the host by fermenting dietary polysaccharides, whereas M. smithii consumes end-stage fermentation products and is hypothesized to relieve feedback inhibition of upstream microbes such as B. thetaiotaomicron. To study their metabolic interactions, we defined and optimized a coculture system and used software testing …

Human Flourishing And The Self-Limiting Assumptions Of Modern Finance, Geoffrey Friesen
Human Flourishing And The Self-Limiting Assumptions Of Modern Finance, Geoffrey Friesen
Department of Finance: Faculty Publications
Current models in Finance make strong, self-limiting assumptions about the nature of human utility, human relationships, human flourishing, and human growth. These assumptions facilitate tractable solutions to financial problems but ignore subjective determinants of human well-being and value creation within the firm. The philosophical and theological traditions of Catholic teaching, as well as evidence on human flourishing from model social science, call us beyond these models. This paper focuses on three specific areas where a “disconnect” exists between Catholic teaching and current Finance models, highlights the relevance of Catholic teaching, and sketches a framework for more fully integrating human flourishing …

Effects Of Release Techniques On Parent-Reared Whooping Cranes In The Eastern Migratory Population, Hillary L. Thompson, M. Susanna Glass, Marianne M. Wellington, Kim H. Boardman, Glenn H. Olsen
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Reintroduction of an Eastern Migratory Population (EMP) of whooping cranes (Grus americana) in the United States by release of captive-reared individuals began in 2001. As of 2020, the EMP has approximately 21 breeding pairs and has had limited recruitment of wild-hatched individuals, thus captive-reared juveniles continue to be released into breeding areas in Wisconsin to maintain the population. We investigated the effects of release techniques on survival, behavior, site fidelity, and conspecific associations of 42 captive-parent-reared whooping cranes released during 2013-2019 into the EMP. Individuals were monitored intensively post-release, then as a part of a long-term monitoring program, …

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
This exhibition is a gallery of original mixed-media paintings by Paula M. Courtney intended to generate curiosity and appreciation for the field of entomology. It is human nature to fear what we do not know or understand. Art can be an effective catalyst for awareness creation and inspiration towards further education. Subjects depicted within these works of art were carefully selected with a goal of maintaining interest in an audience with emotions ranging from neutral to strong dislike towards insects and arachnids. This exhibition as a whole is designed to bridge the gap between a negative perception of insects and …
An Overview Of Integrated Pest Management In Greenhouse Systems, Kateri Cavanagh
An Overview Of Integrated Pest Management In Greenhouse Systems, Kateri Cavanagh
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Greenhouses are technological advancements that have existed since the first century. Human life and the field of agriculture have greatly improved with their invention. However, greenhouses come with their own set of challenges. One of the biggest issues with greenhouse systems is the presence of large pest populations. This is due to the ample food and water supply along with the relative stability of greenhouses. Pests in greenhouses are usually dealt with through the application of chemical pesticides. However, integrated pest management (IPM) is gaining traction for use in greenhouse systems. This overview will cover the history of greenhouses and …

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Purpose of this Toolkit This toolkit is a resource for landscapers, landscape archi tect s and designers, urban foresters, growers. staff in public gardens, parks, nurseries and other ornamentaL horticulture professionals. It is intended for those interested in conserving non pest insects in urban and suburban environments.
Why urban and suburban areas? Insects are critical not only to natural and agricultural ecosystems. but also to urban ecosystems. Urban environments are characterized by a patchwork of habitat "islands" including home gardens, university campuses, urban parks and farms, vacant lots, cemeteries, arboreta, and botanicaL gardens [1). These habitat islands are the focus …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Francisella tularensis is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogen with as few as 10 organisms causing tularemia, a disease that is fatal if untreated. Although F. tularensis subspecies tularensis (type A) and subspecies holarctica (type B) share over 99.5% average nucleotide identity, notable differences exist in genomic organization and pathogenicity. The type A clade has been further divided into subtypes A.I and A.II, with A.I strains being recognized as some of the most virulent bacterial pathogens known. In this study, we report on major disparities that exist between the F. tularensis subpopulations in arginine catabolism and subsequent polyamine biosynthesis. The genes …
Causes And Consequences Of Fake Transparency/Excess Information In Food Claims, Susweta Ray, Konstantinos Giannakas
Causes And Consequences Of Fake Transparency/Excess Information In Food Claims, Susweta Ray, Konstantinos Giannakas
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
This study develops novel multi-stage game-theoretic models of heterogeneous firms and consumers in vertically differentiated food product markets with asymmetric information to analyze the economic causes and market and welfare consequences of excess information/ fake transparency in food labeling. Analytical results indicate that the firms’ incentives to adopt the excess information strategy, the Nash equilibrium configuration of firms adopting the strategy, and the market and welfare impacts of excess information are case-specific and dependent on the consumer reaction to excess information, the quality of the firms’ products, the degree of product differentiation between the brand producing firms, and whether the …
