Arbor Day, Its Purpose And Observance, U.S. Forest Service Jun 1923

Arbor Day, Its Purpose And Observance, U.S. Forest Service

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

TREE-PLANTING FESTIVALS are probably as old as civilization. Sacred trees and groves, planted avenues and roadsides, shaded academic walks, and memorial trees were common long before North America was discovered. Arbor Day, as such, however, is purely American in origin and grew out of conditions peculiar to the Great Plains, a country practically treeless over much of its area but supporting a flourishing agriculture and with a soil and climate well able to nourish tree growth.

Arbor Day originated and was first observed in Nebraska in 1872 (fig. 1). The plan was conceived and the name "Arbor Day" proposed by …

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin Mar 1923

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Up until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith Jan 1923

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Physiology and ecology depend for their constructive development largely upon the applications of physico-chemical concepts to living organisms and their environment, to their life processes, reactions, and interrelations. A concept is valuable biologically in so far as it can be applied and used as a tool for better understanding of the phenomena related to life. Ecology, as the study of the relations between organisms and their environment and of the interrelations of organisms, depends primarily upon the findings of physiology (Clements, 1905). But to apply physicochemical concepts and hence make them of value to the physiologist or ecologist commonly requires …

Studies Of Immunity Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

As one of the phases of our inquiry an effort was made to acquire some general knowledge regarding the immunizing value (1) of sera prepared with the aid of Bacillus bipolaris septicus procured from cattle and swine or (2) of those alleged to be of service in the control or treatment of hemorrhagic septicemia in the species mentioned. The experiments reported in this publication were almost exclusively made with sera purchased from dealers in biologic products.

The Preparation Of Laboratory Specimens As An Aid To The Diagnosis Of Animal Diseases, L. Van Es, L. V. Skidmore

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Many problems in connection with animal diseases require for their solution the application of methods which can only be undertaken at properly equipped laboratories. This ordinarily involves the collection, packing, and shipping of samples of specimens. The manner in which this is done is a most important factor and to a very large extent is responsible either for the success or for the failure of the undertaking. The discussion of the subject to which the following pages are devoted is taken in hand in the hope that it may provide guidance to the veterinarians and others who may have occasion …

The Flat-Headed Apple-Tree Borer, Fred E. Brooks Jan 1922

The Flat-Headed Apple-Tree Borer, Fred E. Brooks

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The flat-headed apple-tree borer, a serious orchard pest throughout the greater part of United States, is found from the Atlantic to Pacific and from Florida and Texas to Canada.

The larva, or grub, of this insect (which in the adult stage is a medium-sized beetle) bores in the bark and wood of a great variety of trees, but is best known as an enemy of apple, pear, peach, and other cultivated fruit trees. Its depredations are felt in almost every locality where orchards have been planted.

Fortunately, this borer almost invariably confines its attacks to the sunny sides of trees …

The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin Jun 1920

The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In the course of certain studies having to do with hemorrhagic septicemia, we were particularly struck with the difficulties which we encountered in the immunization of susceptible laboratory animals (rabbits). This difficulty in no small degree excited our curiosity regarding the immunizing value of the considerable number of "Hemorrhagic Septicemia bacterins and vaccines" which during recent years have become such a prominent article of commerce. In the hope of securing some information relative to the immunizing value of the agents mentioned, we undertook a series of experiments in which the immunity of the bacterin and vaccine injected laboratory animals was …

The Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Fowl Cholera, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin Jun 1920

The Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Fowl Cholera, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A great prevalence of the disease known as fowl cholera has naturally stimulated an interest in possible means of prevention and especially in those which may bring about a more or less lasting immunity. Vaccines which were favorably reported by some failed utterly in the hands of others, so that on the whole no substantial advantage has been gained. Vaccines and bacterins are nevertheless constantly urged on poultry owners confronted with disease and the Experiment Station is frequently called upon to give an opinion on their value or to recommend any special preparation. In order to comply with those demands …

Bergson's Theory Of The Comic In The Light Of English Comedy, Louise Mathewson Jan 1920

Bergson's Theory Of The Comic In The Light Of English Comedy, Louise Mathewson

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

From Plato onward many of the world's greatest thinkers have attempted to tell the meaning of laughter. It is not surprising that the thing has proved alluring, for whereas a true theory of laughter might add little to our enjoyment of the comic; it would, nevertheless, help us to understand the nature of life and mind. But although laughter is perhaps the lightest of human possessions, it is the most difficult to capture for examination. Neither philosopher nor literary critic has given us a wholly satisfactory account of the comic. One difficulty is that so many things are true of …

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens Oct 1919

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

From an economic point of view, as well as from the standpoint of animal comfort, it is highly desirable that adequate barn or shed facilities be provided for the dairy herd. Some farmers have developed the idea that to keep cows healthy and comfortable and to produce sanitary milk it is absolutely necessary to have expensive barns. As a matter of fact, many of the dairy barns where sanitation is the primary object are quite inexpensive. On the other hand, if the barn is conveniently arranged and made to embody the most accepted sanitary features, it is very essential that …

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss Jan 1919

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss

Electronic Texts in American Studies

America's divinely-ordained mission is to serve humanity; Germany's ruler-imposed mission was to dominate mankind. America's galaxy of prophets culminates in the president, whose voice is heard throughout the earth; Germany's line of prophets crashes to ruin in the kaiser; "Deutchland ueber alles" has become a dirge, but rescued peoples are singing "Sweet land of liberty."

This address shows that a continuous voice of prophecy has rung out from American leaders, from the nation's beginning to the present time, proclaiming the mission of America to Humanity, -- culminating in the tremendous movement of 1918-19, when she undertakes to save democracy, and …
