Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The western edge of True Prairie gives way very gradually on the Loess Plains south of the Platte River to Mixed Prairie of the Great Plains. North of the Platte a similar transition occurs in the valleys and on the slopes of the Loess Hills. But in northern Kansas the True Prairie of the Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills is definitely separated by the Flint Hills Region from its western edge on the Kansas-Nebraska Loess Plains. In this study the vegetation, soils, and other environmental factors of the two areas are described and compared.

Malaysian Parasites Xxxv-Xlix, W. W. Macdonald
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This is the third Study of the series from this Institute on the external and internal parasites and the biting insects of the Malaysian region. The earlier two volumes were planned and edited by Dr. J.R. Audy, and on his departure from Malaya in the middle of 1959 Mr. W. W. Macdonald continued the work which had been begun and collated and edited the papers in this present Study.
In the two previous volumes (Study No. 26, 1954 and No. 28, 1957) the emphasis was on the taxonomy of Trombiculid mites. In the present volume the emphasis has changed, and …
Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxvil. Description Of Schizorchis Caballeroi N. Sp. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), With Notes On Other Parasites Of Ochotona, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Schizorchis caballeroi n. sp. has been described from the collared pika, Ochotona collaris (Nelson), from Alaska, and has been distinguished morphologically from its congeners, S. ochotonae Hansen, 1948, and S. altaica Gvozdev, 1951.
Nine species of helminths have been described 10 dale from North American pikas, O. collaris and O. princeps (Richardson). These mammals are markedly allopatric and do not share any species of helminth. Nematodes of two genera, Eugenuris Shults and Labiostomum Akhtar, 1941, occur in O. collaris as weIl as in palearctic species of Ochotona. This, along with other pertinent information, is taken to suggest that O. …

Trichinosis In The Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835) is a common parasite of mammals in the Arctic. High rates of infection have been recorded in terrestrial carnivores (particularly Canidae, Ursidae, and Mustelidae), but representatives of several other groups, including marine mammals, have been found infected. From existing information, it appears that the natural cycles have at least three ecologicaIIy distinct patterns, described in this note.

A parking lot attendant drove a customer to her place of business, and, while returning the automobile to the parking lot, negligently struck the plaintiff, a pedestrian, who successfully recovered against the customer under the following Georgia statute: “Every owner of a motor vehicle . . . shall be liable . . . for injuries . . . resulting from negligence in the operation of such motor vehicle if . . . used in the prosecution of the business (or) for the benefit of such owner.” On appeal, Held: the statute violates due process because it might impose liability upon …

The Bollingen Controversy Ten Years After: Criticism And Content, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Ten years after the Bollingen controversy we have a book collecting major documents from that fight. From the perspective of ten years, one sees the affair more in the light of common day, but the issues still do not bore. The book (William Van O'Connor and Edward Stone, A Casebook on Ezra Pound) is said to be designed to make college freshmen write term papers on Pound. Consequently, the major correspondents in the 1948-49 quarrel are almost all represented: Barrett, Auden, Orwell, Shapiro, Viereck, Robert Gorham Davis, Tate; bits and pieces of evidence concerned with Pound's early career, his …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Natural biotic relationships already had been severely disrupted in the United States by the time significant interest had developed in faunistic helminthology. Some mammalian species, particularly the larger carnivores, had been extirpated or were represented only by scattered individuals in the few remaining wilderness areas. Thus, it is not remarkable that the helminths of such species as the wolverine, Gulo gulo Linnaeus, have been little studied. Fortunately, however, much of arctic and subarctic North America has endured in its primitive state, and here it is still possible to undertake basic biological studies under undisturbed conditions.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxiv. The Parasites Of Wolves, Canis Lupus L., Robert L. Rausch, Francis Williamson
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
It is generally recognized that canine animals comprise an important reservoir of parasites and diseases transmissible to man. These animals, including the domestic dog, have unusual economic importance in arctic and subarctic North America, particularly for the Eskimos and Indians living in more remote regions. These aboriginal peoples continually have close association with canine animals and would appear to be quite vulnerable to infection from this source. That this is true is already evident, although data on morbidity from animal-borne diseases are far from complete. At the present time, at least in Alaska, these people have little ability to lessen …

Some species of the genus Taenia Linnaeus, 1758, are morphologically so similar in the adult stage that their separation is very difficult. Complicating this problem is the questionable validity of certain of these species which have been insufficiently characterized. There are two species, however, the adults of which possess well defined morphological difference but which have been repeatedly confused despite their having been adequately described by early investigators. These cestodes, Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) and T. polyacantha Leuckart, 1856, have for many years been recognized solely by their larval characteristics under the misconception that the adults were indistinguishable.
Origin And Performance Of Ranger Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr
Origin And Performance Of Ranger Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Ranger alfalfa was developed through the cooperative efforts of personnel of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and released for seed increase in 1940. It is a winter-hardy, bacterial wilt resistant variety synthesized from five basic strains selected from Cossack, Turkistan and Ladak. Breeding methods used in the development of this variety were described in detail. Research results obtained on the performance of the basic strains and on the seed lots, produced under certification procedures, in controlled wilt and cold tests and forage yield trials under field conditions at the Nebraska station were presented …
Bleak Reports Coming From Waterfowl Breeding Grounds, Ross Leffler
Bleak Reports Coming From Waterfowl Breeding Grounds, Ross Leffler
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
There is no optimism expressed in the reports from the Flyway Biologists and other observers making surveys on the waterfowl breeding grounds in Canada and the United States. The only bright spot is a report from Fairbanks, Alaska, that the Yukon Flats and other breeding areas in that vicinity are well populated with waterfowl. While this is a heartening sign, only in a small degree does it offset the prospects for poor production in the heart of the continental breeding grounds in the Prairie States and Provinces.
As one observer with many years of experience in the prairies has put …

The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The present study was made by the University of Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station to determine the extent of similarity in the plans of one particular style of house, the square house of more than one story. Patterns of remodeling will be developed if the similarity of existing houses justifies such a project. The two story square house was chosen for study because it is one of the predominant old style houses still in existence throughout the North Central Region.

An Iron Fulgurite From Nebraska, C. M. Riley
An Iron Fulgurite From Nebraska, C. M. Riley
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
From the time of the ancients man has been impressed with the force of lightning and its effect on the rocks at the surface of the earth. It was Saussure in 1786 who first wrote a scientific account of a true fulgurite, and a wealth of literature has been written about the subject since this time. Many unusual fulgurites have been described, some of which may not truly be the result of lightning. The iron fulgurite is a strange conical object about 3 inches high composed mainly of tiny spheres and filaments of metallic iron intermixed with a small amount …

Rb59-187 The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Many of our farm homes do not satisfactorily meet the needs of the family and its living patterns. Thirty to 50 years ago little thought was given to certain aspects of housing which are considered essential today. It is obvious, to even the casual observer, that improvements should be made in living space, work areas, utilities and appliances.
The 1959 survey of the two story square house parallels the multi-story tee house study (RB58-186 The Existing Space in Nebraska Multistory Tee Houses) as to area covered and type of data collected. One hundred and seven houses were included …

A Distributional Check-List Of Nebraska Mosquitoes, William F. Rapp Jr.
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
In 1944, Tate and Gates published the first comprehensive work on the mosquitoes of Nebraska. Their publication was based on specimens in the collection at the Entomology Department, University of Nebraska, and on specimens collected in light traps during the summers of 1942 and 1943. Since that time our knowledge of Nebraska mosquitoes has increased materially. During World War II the United States Public Health Service through its Division of Malaria Control in War Areas conducted many surveys around army posts, air fields, and prisoner of war camps. In addition the U.S. Army maintained the Seventh Service Command Medical Laboratory …
