The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1964

The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In some preliminary work on the ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis (Rudolphi, 1801) on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Rausch and Schiller (1956. Parasitology, 46 (3 & 4): 395-419) noted that the percentage of arctic foxes, Alopex lagopus Linnaeus, harboring the adult cestodes seemed to vary annually in direct relation to the population density of tundra voles, Microtus oeconomus innuitus Merriam, the principal intermediate host. With the primary objective of examining this relationship in greater detail, an intensive, long-term ecologic investigation was begun on this island in 1955. Some of the results in the first 7 years are reported here.

The Magnetocardiogram A New Approach To The Fields Surrounding The Heart, R. A. Stratbucker, C. M. Hyde, S. E. Wixon Oct 1963

The Magnetocardiogram A New Approach To The Fields Surrounding The Heart, R. A. Stratbucker, C. M. Hyde, S. E. Wixon

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Experiments have been conducted which reveal the existence of a detectable magnetic field associated with cardiac electrical activity. The relationship between the magnetic record and the electrocardiogram has been explored and it is shown that under certain conditions of axis orientation the voltage induced into a toroidal sensing element around the heart has the form of the first time derivative of the electrocardiogram. A formula based on Maxwell's equations has been developed to relate these two phenomona.

The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson Sep 1963

The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson

College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications

The congenital anomaly of cleft palate can now be reproduced by a variety of teratogenetic agents in a number of laboratory animals (Kalter & Warkany, 1959). Through the use of the induced cleft palate numerous studies have been directed toward detecting the developmental mishaps which create this defect. The work of Fraser et al. (1957) suggested that various positional factors of the developing palatal and facial structures may be the underlying cause for failure of palatal closure in mouse embryos. Walker & Fraser (1956) observed elastic fibers among the palatal processes of mouse embryos which they suggested might impart a …

A Review Of The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, Robert L. Rausch, George S. Nelson Jun 1963

A Review Of The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, Robert L. Rausch, George S. Nelson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. The genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, is reviewed. The recorded measurements of all species are shown in tables, and their taxonomic status is discussed.

2. Three species of Echinococcus can be distinguished by morphological criteria and are considered valid: E. granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. oligarthrus. The status of E. felidis and E. patagonicus is uncertain, but both may be conspecific with E. granulosus. Six species are considered synonyms of E. granulosus: E. cameroni, E. intermedius, E. longimanubrius, E. lycaontis, E. minimus and E. ortleppi.

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch Jun 1963

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. Hydatid cysts are found in more than 30 per cent of all cattle, sheep and goats in Kenya, but the disease is prevalent in man only in the semi-desert area of Turkana. Up to the time of the present investigation the life-cycle of the parasite in East Africa had not been studied, but it was suggested that wild carnivores, such as hyenas and jackals, might be the main hosts of the adult worms.

2. One hundred and forty-three carnivores, representing 23 species, have been examined. Echinococcus adults were found in 27 out of 43 domestic dogs (Canis familiaris …

Schizorchis Yamashitai Sp. N. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) From The Northern Pika Ochotona Hyperborea Pallas In Hokkaido, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Schizorchis yamashitai sp. n., from the northern pika in Hokkaido, is described and its morphological characteristics compared with those of the three previously known species of Schizorchis Hansen, 1948. The zoogeography of Schizorchis spp. in pikas is briefly discussed.

Arhythmorhynchus Capellae Sp. N. (Polymorphidae: Acanthocephala), A Parasite Of The Common Snipe Capella Gallinago Delicata, Gerald D. Schmidt Jun 1963

Arhythmorhynchus Capellae Sp. N. (Polymorphidae: Acanthocephala), A Parasite Of The Common Snipe Capella Gallinago Delicata, Gerald D. Schmidt

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Arhythmorhynchus capellae sp. n. is described. The description is based on seven males and seven females from the Common Snipe in northern Colorado. The species is contrasted with two similar species, A. comptus Van Cleave and Rausch, 1950 and A. eroliae (Yamaguti, 1939) Van Cleave and Rausch, 1950. It differs from the former in having 14 proboscis hooks per row rather than eight or nine, and from the latter in having no bursal rays and 16 rows of 14 hooks rather than 18 rows of 12 to 13 hooks.

Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1963

Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cestodes of the genus Echinococcus cause two distinct diseases: the well-known cystic hydatid disease found in stock-raising areas, caused by E. granulosus, and the more rare alveolar hydatid disease, which is limited to the northern hemisphere and is caused by the biologically and morphologically distinct E. multilocularis.

Eight cases of alveolar hydatid disease of the liver are reported from Alaska, including three patients who underwent hemihepatectomy for advanced lesions. Radical resection is concluded to be the only rational treatment for this otherwise progressive and fatal disease.

Glucosides Of Coumarinic And O-Coumaric Acids In The Tonka Bean, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Feb 1963

Glucosides Of Coumarinic And O-Coumaric Acids In The Tonka Bean, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The β-glucosides of coumarinic and o-coumaric acids were detected in extracts of cotyledons, exocarps, and seedling leaves of the tonka bean. The existence of these compounds and the presence of a β-glucosidase having specificity for coumarinyl glucoside suggest that, the tonka bean synthesizes coumarin by a pathway similar to the one found in sweetclover.

Ticks (Ixodidae) On Birds Migrating From Europe And Asia To Africa, 1959-61, Harry Hoogstraal, Makram N. Kaiser, Melvin A. Traylor, Ezzat Guindy, Sobhy Gaber Jan 1963

Ticks (Ixodidae) On Birds Migrating From Europe And Asia To Africa, 1959-61, Harry Hoogstraal, Makram N. Kaiser, Melvin A. Traylor, Ezzat Guindy, Sobhy Gaber

United States Navy: Publications

The need for imaginative thinking and research in the epidemiology of diseases transmitted by arthropods is made manifest by new views of the longevity and host ranges of arthropod-borne viruses, as well as by other biological and medical phenomena. Among these is the intercontinental transport of ticks by migrating birds. During the fall migration periods of 1959, 1960 and 1961, 32 086 birds (comprising 72 forms) were examined for ticks in Egypt while en route from Asia and eastern Europe to tropical Africa. Of these, 40 forms, represented by 31 434 birds, were tick-infested. The bird hosts, numbering 1040 (3.31% …

Personal Health : Extension Circular 10-01-63

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

Because health is affected by habits, this unit of the 4-H project is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work toward self improvement, you will be surprised at how fast your health habits improve.

Beef Cattle Progress Report, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer Jan 1963

Beef Cattle Progress Report, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Shipping fever is a respiratory disease "complex" of cattle. The disease causes extensive economic losses from death, loss of physical condition, inefficient feed utilization and treatment expense. The annual loss from this disease in the United States has been estimated to be $25,000,000.

In many respects shipping fever is similar to respiratory diseases of humans. It may occur in any season of the year, but is most common in the fall and early winter. Although any age animal may be infected recently weaned calves and feeder cattle which have just been moved from the range to feedlot are most susceptible.

Proof In (Civil Law) Criminal Procedure, W. P. J. Pompe Jan 1963

Proof In (Civil Law) Criminal Procedure, W. P. J. Pompe

Nebraska Law Review

In the application of law, and more particularly in the application of the criminal law, "to prove" means "to produce evidence of facts which occurred in the past." The application of law implies also the proof of all sorts of abstract theories, but by "proof" in the application of law one must only include proof of concrete facts. The particular character of proof in criminal cases lies in the fact that such proof is of a legal nature. Starting from the principle that absolute certainty cannot be achieved, one cannot avoid the question of what is the degree of certainty …

Terminating A Marriage In Nebraska, Marvin D. Keller Jan 1963

Terminating A Marriage In Nebraska, Marvin D. Keller

Nebraska Law Review

As the basic unit in society, the family has long been the subject of considerable legal attention. Such attention has been primarily concerned with the procedures for establishing and dissolving the marital status. Because of a greatly increased divorce rate and a more complete understanding about the causes of marital breakup, increasing criticism is being directed toward the failure of statutory divorce provisions to adapt to the changing attitudes of society. An example of this is Nebraska, where except for the enforcement of support, the law of divorce remains basically the same as it was in 1856. It is the …

Constitutional Law—Statute Making The Status Of Being A Drug Addict A Crime Held Unconstitutional—Robinson V. California (Sup. Ct. 1962), Calvin E. Robinson Jan 1963

Constitutional Law—Statute Making The Status Of Being A Drug Addict A Crime Held Unconstitutional—Robinson V. California (Sup. Ct. 1962), Calvin E. Robinson

Nebraska Law Review

Had Robinson v. California been decided fifty years ago, the decision would probably have been to allow the conviction of a narcotic addict. But with scientific knowledge of the nature and methods of treatment for narcotics addiction developed to what it is today, the Court could only say that narcotics addiction is not truly a type of criminal conduct. Inherent in Robinson is all the medical knowledge that has been gained in recent years. As medical and scientific knowledge increase, especially in the fields of mental and emotional illness, perhaps even greater emphasis will be placed upon treatment of wrongdoers, …

Mr. Justice Black, Chief Justice Marshall, And The Commerce Clause, Paul Tillett Jan 1963

Mr. Justice Black, Chief Justice Marshall, And The Commerce Clause, Paul Tillett

Nebraska Law Review

Throughout his twenty-six years on the United States Supreme Court, Mr. Justice Black has shown himself to be an able advocate of Chief Justice Marshall's interpretation of the critical clause which empowers Congress to "regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes." The commerce clause does not explain what power over commerce, if any, is left to the states. Since Chief Justice Marshall's first attempt to clarify this relationship in Gibbons v. Ogden, the Court has adopted a series of constitutional doctrines, none of which can be regarded as having finally resolved …
