Population Dynamics And Reproduction In Virginia Meadow Voles, Robert K. Rose Mar 1977

Population Dynamics And Reproduction In Virginia Meadow Voles, Robert K. Rose

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

This paper describes changes in important demographic parameters of a grassland (non-orchard) population of the meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus) studied since November 1974 near Charlottesville in piedmont Virginia. (This study was supported by the Dept of Biology of the University of Virginia until August 1976, and is now the joint project with Ray D. Dueser, Dept of Environmental Sciences, UVA, and is supported by our respective departments.) Methods used are similar to those of C.J. Krebs, and require weekly live-trapping during which each vole is weighed and assessed for reproductive state and new voles are tagged. Such information has been …

The Pine Vole Control Problem In Eastern New York Apple Orchards, Warren H. Smith Mar 1977

The Pine Vole Control Problem In Eastern New York Apple Orchards, Warren H. Smith

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Pine voles have always been a problem in a few orchards in Eastern New York. In the past the vole population was controlled with Endrin, and damage to trees, although significant, was tolerable. From 1970 to 1972 more and more complaints were heard from growers concerning Pine vole damage to apple trees. Apparently as vole populations increased and damage became more serious, the word spread among growers and an awareness within the fruit growing community concerning the pine vole problem was generated. It is interesting to note that during this period when pine voles population seem to increase, Endrin was …

Pine Vole Control With Herbicides, Roger S. Young Mar 1977

Pine Vole Control With Herbicides, Roger S. Young

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

The pine vole, M. pinetorum, has become the number one problem in many West Virginia orchards. It's deep subterranean tunnel system makes it more difficult to control than other voles. A decade ago the vole population was limited almost entirely to the apple orchard. This undoubtedly correlates to the abundance of vegetative ground cover found in the apple orchard as contrasted to the more cleanly cultivated peach orchard. The cultural methods used in the peach orchard have changed toward a sod culture similar to that of the apple orchard and at the same time the vole problem in the peach …

Control Of Microtus In Two Damage Situations, Andrew Radvanyi Mar 1977

Control Of Microtus In Two Damage Situations, Andrew Radvanyi

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

In Canada the potential exists of over a million dollars girdling damage loss per year caused by small mammals to fruit trees in each of the four major orchard areas of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Such annual losses continue to occur despite the existence of methods developed which could largely eliminate a large percentage of such losses at a fraction of the costs currently being spent on attempts to control small mammal populations (primarily meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) in orchard situations. In this paper I propose to outline briefly the developmental studies conducted by the …

Remarks To Be Presented At The First Eastern Pine And Meadow Vole Symposium, Merle H. Markley Mar 1977

Remarks To Be Presented At The First Eastern Pine And Meadow Vole Symposium, Merle H. Markley

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A Rebuttable Presumption Against Reregistration has been issued against endrin. It is my own opinion that: First endrin should be critically examined, use by use, with respect to effectiveness and alleged hazard to non-target animals, be they pets, domestic stock or wildlife; and secondly, that a careful and complete review be made of all economic benefits against the hazards identified in the earlier review. The notice which appeared in the Federal Register emphasized the occasional harmful aspects of use and failed to give much or any credence to benefits. Certainly there must be some value to the grower and financial …

The Need For An Integrated Control Strategy For Orchard Mouse Damage, Robert Stehn, Elizabeth Johnson, Milo Richmond Mar 1977

The Need For An Integrated Control Strategy For Orchard Mouse Damage, Robert Stehn, Elizabeth Johnson, Milo Richmond

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

During the last six years the N.Y. Coop. Wildlife Research Unit has been involved in research on pine voles. Projects have included studies of reproduction in the laboratory, population biology in orchards and testing of pine vole control toxicants. Field work has been restricted to a few orchards in Ulster and Orange counties in the Hudson Valley. Therefore some of the results may reflect local conditions and should be regarded as preliminary in nature. Work involving control procedures has indicated that hand baiting with anticoagulant pellets under previously established bait stations averages 85 percent reduction in pine vole numbers. Anticoagulant …

Exceptions To The Rule: A Review Of The Criminal Personality, Volume I: A Profile For Change, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The major purpose of the first volume of an intended three-volume series by Samuel Yochelson and Stanton E. Samenow (1976) is to provide evidence that understanding the thought processes of chronic criminals provides the major key to understanding criminal behavior. Volumes II and III will deal, respectively, with the techniques of therapy developed for the analysis and correction of criminal thought patterns, and with the special problems of therapy with criminals who are chronic drug users. This review of Volume I is divided into three parts, the first being a review of the content and major points of the book, …

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1977

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this morning to this dynamic group of young farm families. Those of .us who were actively involved in farming a few years back are continually amazed at the talent that has come along" to succeed us. Farming has indeed changed more than we realize. That is not a new discovery, for thousands of articles have been written about the technological revolution in agriculture. But relatively little attention has been given to the change in farm families themselves. without doubt, the quality level of young farmers and their wives - whether it be …

G77-330 Estimating Pork Carcass Lean (Revised June 1994), Dennis E. Burson Jan 1977

G77-330 Estimating Pork Carcass Lean (Revised June 1994), Dennis E. Burson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Four procedures for pork carcass evaluation are given here, along with illustrations.

Pork carcass value is an important factor affecting the profitability of the pork industry. Reproduction traits and growth performance are easily recognized as keys to the profitability and health of the pork industry, yet carcass value also plays an important role. Differences in carcass product value are monetarily recognized by recognizing differences in carcass weight and grade. In addition, the pork industry recognizes that consumption of pork may key on public health concerns relating to reducing fat consumption and the resulting consumer demand for lower fat products.

Concepts Of Career And General Education, Paul A. Olson Jan 1977

Concepts Of Career And General Education, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the distinctions between general education and education for a career, with a view to synthesizing the literature and presenting salient problems. General education can be defined in several ways. It is defined here as education that puts a person in touch with the main outlines of knowledge available to a historical period or a given culture. Theoretically, education is general if it has no one specific vocation as its end and no one specific discipline or partisan viewpoint as its specialty. By way of example, the medieval quadrivium and trivium can be viewed as "general education," in …
