Contributions Of Pierre Paul Broca To Cancer Genetics, Anne J. Krush
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Pierre P. Broca was born in a small town near Bordeaux, France, June 28, 1824, the son of a Huguenot physician. After graduation from a local college, he entered medical school at the University of Paris at the age of 17, was graduated in three years. Five years later he received the M.D. degree, having special interests in pathology, anatomy, and surgery. In 1853 he was appointed assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine and surgeon of the "Central Bureau." Broca made significant scientific and clinical contributions in all of the above fields as well as in anthropology. He founded …
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
What has always fascinated me is an historical account that ends triumphantly but whose start-to-finish is riddled with reversals and hostile obstacles and haunted by anguishing circumstances. The history of "humanities in medical education- the past ten years" in the United States is just such a story. In the last ten years there has been a continually wider acceptance of humanities in United States medical schools, i.e., a growing number of schools introducing the humanities, a growth in the quality and scope of programs being offered, and a greater acceptance of the humanities as an integral part of the medical …

Instream Flow Needs For Water Quality Management, Robert D. Todd
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The Department of Environmental Control (DEC) was established by legislative action with passage of the Nebraska Environmental Protection Act in 1971. This legislation gave broad powers to the department directing the development of comprehensive programs for the prevention, control, and abatement of new or existing pollution of the air, waters, and land of the state. This authority is further spelled out by statute with regard to development of control programs, water quality standards, and wastewater treatment criteria.
The water pollution abatement programs administered by DEC are based primarily on two basic sets of regulations, Water Quality Standards and National Pollutant …
Interrelationships Of Selected Physical Properties And Chemical Constituents Of Ground Water In Northwestern Nebraska, Arthur W. Struempler
Interrelationships Of Selected Physical Properties And Chemical Constituents Of Ground Water In Northwestern Nebraska, Arthur W. Struempler
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
This study provides baseline data for many of the chemical constituents occurring in ground water in northwestern Nebraska and contiguous parts of Wyoming and South Dakota; it also projects the chemical behavior of water from similar geologic environments. Samples were collected from springs issuing mainly from the Pine Ridge escarpment and wells tapping aquifers in Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The 139 water samples were analyzed for fifteen chemical constituents, including lithium and heavy-metals (Le., uranium, manganese, silver, lead, cadmium, and copper). The chemical composition of spring water is similar to that of well water from mid-Tertiary sandstones. Water from …

Isolation Of Trivittatus Virus From Aedes Triseriatus, Terry L. Foxhoven, Ardyce B. Welch
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Aedes triseriatus mosquitoes were trapped and processed for viral isolation. Swiss white mice and BHK-21 cell cultures were used for propagation of virus. A sucrose-acetone extracted antigen was produced from infected mouse brains. Anti-serum was produced in Swiss white mice as hyperimmune ascitic fluid using Sarcoma 180/TG. The isolate was identified using hemagglutination, hemagglutination-inhibition, and serum neutralization techniques. The virus was identified as California group arbovirus, type Trivittatus.
This is the first reported isolation of California group arbovirus, type Trivittatus virus from field samples of A. triseriatus mosquito and the first time the virus has been isolated from any species …
Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman
Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
It was postulated that formal operational hypothesis-testing ability includes at least three cognitive capacities: (a) implication comprehension, the ability to understand conditional relationships; (b) falsification strategy, the realization that to test a hypothesis, one must seek information that would falsify it; and(c) nonverification insight, the realization that hypotheses are not conclusively verified by supporting data. A total of 24 males in each of Grades 7, 10, and college evaluated data descriptions with respect to each of four hypothesized implication relationships and chose an experiment to test each hypothesis. Results suggested three sequences of qualitative change in hypothesis-testing ability: (a) from …

Biological characteristics of nodule-like alveolar lesions (NLAL) induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in organ culture of whole mammary gland (BALB/c female mice) were assessed after transplantation into gland-free mammary fat pads of syngeneic virgin mice. (i)Tissue- fragment explants from NLAL areas of the gland produced abnormal lobuloalveolar (LA) outgrowths in 3 of 10 fat pads. (ii) Transplantation of dissociated cells of NLAL-derived LA outgrowths into 36 fat pads showed 100% LA outgrowths and 3 (8%) of these 36 outgrowths produced mammary carcinomas. (iii) The explants of dissociated cells from whole mammary glands treated with DMBA …

The leaf-nosed bats of the New World family Phyllostomatidae occur from the southwestern United States through tropical Central and South America. Members of this family are also found throughout the Antilles. The ecological associations of the species in this family seem to be rather broad; species are found in humid tropical to semiarid and arid subtropical environments. Diversity in feeding is readily apparent ranging from nectivores (Glossophaga), frugivores (Artibeus), sanguivores (Desmodus), to omnivores (Phyllostomus) (see review by Glass, 1970; Gardner, this volume).
To understand better the biology of phyllostomatid bats, it is …

The morphology of Parascaris equorum of horses was studied; light and scanning electron microscopy were used. Late fourth-stage larvae have narrow, rectangular lips bearing few, large. triangular, irregularly spaced denticles and the lips are not markedly set off from the body. The cutick of the late fourth stage is completely transversely striated, with incomplete longitudinal ridges creating a brickwork pattern; longitudinal alae are present. Total body lengths of fourth-stage larvae range from 10 to 32 mm. A single molting fourth-stage male was found to be 33 mm long. Early fifthstage nematodes have wide, trilobate lips with a deep transverse groove …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Neopronocephalus orientalis from Cuora amboinensis in Malaysia most closely resembles N. spinometraterminis from Kachuga tectum tentoria in India by possessing postovarian cecal tips and an average of more than 30 vitelline follicles, but differs by having equatorial rather than preequatorial testes which are mostly intercecal rather than extracecal and a slightly smaller cirrus sac, Neopronocephaius spinometraterminis purportedly has spines in the metraterm and a common genital pore, whereas N . orientalis exhibits nonstaining wrinkled epithelium lining the metraterm and separate genital pores. Spirhapalum elongatum was also collected from its type host near the type locality.

New Records For Amphibian And Reptile Trematodes, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
From 1975 to 1978, 200 amphibians and reptiles from localities in Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, and West Virginia were examined for trematode parasites. This report provides additional information concerning the geographical distribution of North American amphibian and reptile trematodes. Some results have already been published (Brooks and Fusco, 1978, J. Miss. Acad. Sci. 23:95-99). Worms, removed from their hosts, were examined alive when possible, and fixed with AFA after flattening with slight coverslip pressure. Specimens were stored in 7{)1lO ethanol, then stained with Mayer's hematoxylin and mounted in Histoclad or Canada balsam for study as whole …

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Partially purified Met-tRNAf binding factor, eIF-2, was phosphorylated by using heme-regulated inhibitor (HRI). Phosphorylated eIF-2 was freed from HRI by phosphocellulose column chromatography. Analysis by isoelectric focusing showed 100% phosphorylation of the 38,000-dalton subunit of eIF-2. Both eIF-2 and eIF-2(P) formed ternary complexes with Met-tRNAf and GTP with almost the same efficiency, and in both cases the ternary complex formation was drastically inhibited by prior addition of Mg2+. However, whereas the ternary complexes formed with eIF-2 could be stimulated by Co-eIF-2C at 1 mM Mg2+ and dissociated by Co-eIF-2B at 5 mM Mg2+, …

O. Ralston, A. Das, M. Grace, H. Das, N. K. Gupta
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, a translational inhibitor (heme-regulated inhibitor, HRI) that blocks polypeptide chain initiation is activated. HRI is a protein kinase that specifically phosphorylates the 38,000-dalton subunit of the Met-tRNAfMet binding factor, eIF-2. Phosphorylation of eIF-2 by HRI prevents its interaction with at least two additional factors, resulting in a net reduction in formation of ternary complex (Met-tRNAfMet eIF-2•GTP) and AUG-dependent transfer of Met-tRNAfMet to 40S ribosomal subunits. A factor (sRF) that reverses protein synthesis inhibition in heme-deficient Iysates has been purified from reticulocyte postribosomal supernatant. sRF also reverses the inhibition …

Patterns Of Cell Division, Dna Base Compositions, And Fine Structures Of Some Radiation-Resistant Vegetative Bacteria Found In Food, S. W. Sanders, R. Burt Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Representative highly radiation-resistant Moraxella-Acinetobacter (M-A), Pseudomonas radiora, Micrococcus radiodurans, and Micrococcus radiophilus exhibited a wide variety of division systems and cell wall characteristics. However, the most resistant M-A possessed unusually thick cell walls, indicating a possible role of the cell wall in radiation resistance in the M-A. Thick septation was present in most of the bacteria studied, but was absent in P. radiora, thus excluding this as a necessity for high resistance. Reliable determination of the number of division planes of the M-A for use as a taxonomic criterion was achieved by the direct observation of dividing cells. …

Attribution, Socialization, And Moral Decision Making, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The position developed in this chapter resembles that taken by Aristotle more than that taken by most modern psychology theorists, for our discipline has tended to approach moral behavior and thought as if two quite different topics were at issue. Modern psychological approaches to moral behavior have tended to focus almost entirely on the emotional mediation of avoidance and upon avoidance behavior, whereas moral judgment theorists have tended to isolate themselves from both emotion and behavior, concentrating instead on verbal expressions of moral judgments. Aristotle suggested a more integrated view - that effective moral training should first involve the young …

Abstract Nuclear emulsions of the Ilford K series, exposed to X-rays from 15 to 150 kVp and systematically underdeveloped, exhibit supralinear blackness-exposure curves ranging from 1- to 4-hit in character, and whose shape is the same at all excitation voltages. Processing can be so adjusted that the curve shape is well represented by the model, and matches an experimental dose-response curve obtained with hamster cells after irradiation with gamma rays. The effective grain size of these emulsions is 1.3 μm when normalized to unit density material for comparison with the radiation-sensitive elements of biological cells. With fractionated exposures, response …

A Mid-Continent Irruption Of Canada Lynx, 1962-63, Harvey L. Gunderson
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
There was a mid-continent irruption of the Canada lynx (Felis lynx) population and subsequent extensive movement into non-lynx habitats during the years 1962-1963. Lynx were found in the prairie provinces of Canada and the prairie areas of Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. They were also found in urban areas such as Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota: Winnipeg, Manitoba: and Calgary, Saskatchewan, Canada. Causes for the irruption remain unknown but speculations include primarily a change in snowshoe hare population, disease, extensive forest fires and extensive spraying. Unusual behavior seemed to be most often reflected by a lack of …
