Historical Editing: The Federal Role, Simone Reagor
Historical Editing: The Federal Role, Simone Reagor
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
When I began work on this paper, I started from the assumption that I would discover a range of arguments to justify continued federal funding for documentary editing through the powers of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission structured much as we have come to know it. My effort to think through this question has, instead, brought me to quite another position. Whatever options we may now have about federal funding, I no longer believe that we should replicate what we have had before. I do not believe it is wise to continue funding for historical editing through the …

The Bead Game: Response Strategies In Free Assortment, Alan B. Bond
Alan Bond Publications
Subjects were presented with a collection of spherical beads of four different colors and were instructed to sort them as fast and as accurately as possible. The sequence in which the beads were sorted was recorded, along with the time intervals between successive beads. Subjects were observed to sort in nonrandom sequences, producing runs in which a given bead type was taken exclusively. The speed and accuracy of the sorting process was positively correlated with the degree of nonrandomness of the sorting sequence. This relationship appeared to be primarily attributable to perceptual factors involved in the initiation of a run …

The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 and the Clean Water Act of 1977 were written in response to a national concern for decreasing surface and groundwater quality. These laws set 1985 as a target date for eliminating pollutant discharges into navigable waters. An interim goal of the acts calls for "water quality which provides for the protection and propagation of fish, shell fish, and wildlife and provides for recreation in and on the water," where attainable, by …

Impacts Of Technology On U.S. Cropland And Rangeland Productivity, Office Of Technology Assessment
Congressional Research Service Reports
This Nation's impressive agricultural success is the product of many factors: abundant resources of land and water, a favorable climate, and a history of resourceful farmers and technological innovation. We meet not only our own needs but supply a substantial portion of the agricultural products used elsewhere in the world. As demand increases, so must agricultural productivity. Part of the necessary growth may come from farming additional acreage. But most of the increase will depend on intensifying production with improved agricultural technologies. The question is, however, whether farmland and rangeland resources can sustain such intensive use.

G82-590 Feeder Cattle Grades, Keith E. Gilster, H. Dwight Loveday
G82-590 Feeder Cattle Grades, Keith E. Gilster, H. Dwight Loveday
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes the ten USDA feeder cattle grades.
The purpose of the USDA Feeder Cattle Grades is to sort feeder cattle into similar groups that will facilitate their selling and buying. These grades can also be used for sorting feeder cattle into similar outcome groups in a feedlot. Differences in frame size and muscle thickness score are the basis for the USDA Feeder Cattle Grades.
Feeder cattle are given a grade score that is coded for both frame size (large, medium and small) and thickness (1, 2 and 3). For example, a large frame, thick feeder steer would have …
1982 Annual Report
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
1982 was a year of challenges for all the various members of our unit including the researcher, the extension worker, the forester, and all the support staff. Our program year started on October 1, 1981 and ended on September 30, 1982.
From the agriculture standpoint, it has been a difficult year. The fall of 1981 was not favorable to the agricultural producer. Rain, freezing temperatures and even light snow was prevalent in October, 1981. Throughout the winter of 91-82, it was cold and snow was on the ground most of the winter.
It was not uncommon for counties in the …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Recruitment of students in departments of agricultural education is crucial. Recruitment also demands time and money. To make the recruitment process work as efficiently as possible, it must be organized to effectively use all of the people available. By following the 16 theorems outlined in this article, a department of agricultural education should find that its recruitment efforts operate both efficiently and effectively.

Radiology At The School Of Medicine Of Creighton University, D. Arnold Dowell, Nicholas Dietz, Jr.
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Medical radiology and radiology at Creighton University's School of Medicine and its teaching hospitals have been closely intertwined from the very time of Roentgen's announcement of his discovery of X-rays on 28 December 1895. A good roentgenogram was produced at Creighton only 46 days later! X-ray equipment was installed at both the out-patient dispensary and the hospital in 1900. Radiology departments were established in both institutions in 1910. Many improvements (faster photographic emulsions, contrast materials, radiotherapy, founding of a Roentgen Technology School), were witnessed by A. F. Tyler who headed both departments (l9l 0-33). He was succeeded by 1. F. …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Percivall Pott was born in London, England 26 December 1713. His father died when he was four, leaving Mrs. Pott with Percivall and a daughter by a previous marriage. Pott's education was thereafter financed by one of Mrs. Pott's cousins, Dr. Wilco x, Bishop of Roches· ter. Although Pott became proficient in classical literature, and although Dr. Wilcox hoped that he would choose a career in theology, he chose a career in surgery instead and was bound as an apprentice to Dr. Nourse, a surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1729. He spent 58 years at this hospital, resigning from …

An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis
An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The underlying assumptions of the dominant nomothetic (group-centered, standardized, and controlled environmental contexts, and quantitative methodologies) and idiographic (individual-centered, naturalistic environmental contexts, and qualitative methodologies) research perspectives are examined. An interactive theoretic (i.e., real people interacting in real organizations) for organizational behavior is suggested-a theoretic assumption that lends itself to an idiographic approach. Intensive single- case experimental designs and direct observational measures are proposed as a potentially powerful methodology for idiographic research of organizational behavior.

Protein Synthesis In Rabbit Reticulocytes: Characteristics Of The Protein Factor Rf That Reverses Inhibition Of Protein Synthesis In Heme-Deficient Reticulocyte Lysates, Michael Grace, Robert O. Ralston, Ambica C. Banerjee, Naba K. Gupta
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, the heme-regulated translational inhibitor of protein synthesis (HRI) is activated and shuts off protein synthesis. In partial reactions, HRI phosphorylates the Mr 38,000 subunit (α subunit) of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2), which forms a ternary complex, Met-tRNAf•eIF-2•GTP. The eIF-2α(P) thus formed is not recognized by two eIF-2 ancillary factors, Co-eIF-2B (which promotes the dissociation of the ternary complex at high Mg2+) and Co-eIF-2C (which reverses the inhibition of ternary complex formation), and thus, is presumably inactive in peptide chain initiation. A protein factor, designated RF, which reverses inhibition …

The Multi-Individual Cremation Phenomenon Of The Santa Cruz Drainage, Karl J. Reinhard, T Michael Fink
Karl Reinhard Publications
Multi-individual cremation deposits found in the upper Santa Cruz River drainage were previously interpreted as the result of hypothesized cultural contact in the area. A review of 50 cremation deposits for which detailed analyses are available indicates that mulii-individual cremation deposits are the result of incomplete gleaning practices and have doubtful cultural significance. Hypotheses are generated from the present data which account for the apparent variation in cremation practices within the study area.
