G88-866 Christmas Tree Selection And Care, Mike Kuhns, Rollin Schnieder Jan 1988

G88-866 Christmas Tree Selection And Care, Mike Kuhns, Rollin Schnieder

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide discusses types of trees, tree species, cut tree care, offers tips on decorating trees, considers tree disposal and laws governing the display of Christmas trees, and suggests a proper type of tree stand.

Introduction

Christmas trees have been a tradition in the United States since the Revolutionary War, when homesick Hessian soldiers decorated fir trees as was their custom in Germany. Since then the custom has spread. It is now difficult for many people to imagine Christmas without the Christmas tree tradition.

To insure a safe and happy holiday, you need to know a few things about selecting …

Selling Nebraska's Water: Water Sales, Transfers And Exports, J. David Aiken Jan 1988

Selling Nebraska's Water: Water Sales, Transfers And Exports, J. David Aiken

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Historically, western states have been free to prohibit water exports, and most states have done so. This changed abruptly in 1982, when the U.S. Supreme Court in its Sporhase decision invalidated Nebraska's groundwater export statute. After Sporhase, states could no longer simply prohibit the export of water, so the likelihood that water could be purchased or appropriated for export increased. In 1987 legislation was introduced to aggressively seek interstate buyers for Nebraska water. In the face of stormy opposition, the legislation was successfully recast as a study of water exports and transfers. The water exports study, however, contained the …

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb Jan 1988

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter analyzes the magnitude and causes of Nebraska's prison overcrowding problem. Nebraska's response to this problem has been to expand prison capacity and to implement programs to decrease length of stay. Another policy option - reducing prison admissions through intensive supervision probation - is examined in this chapter. Data from Nebraska Parole Board files indicate there is a category of current prison inmates that are not sufficiently dangerous to require imprisonment. Many of these nonviolent offenders with marginal criminal histories could be diverted into intensive probation programs that are more cost·effective than incarceration.

Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin Jan 1988

Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

We all associate meaning with textile designs. If we can see the principles of Revolutionary zeal and the sanction of family life and work in one textile design, we can perceive the explicit Modernism of another and realize that in the complex decisions that comprise the creation of a textile, we have fashioned our world and its values. Perhaps the textile is small, but its condensed values and meaning may be a more clarified perception about the world than most others. For many, such as Roland Barthes, textiles and clothing can thereby be described as a sign system offering a …

Cloning And Sequencing Of The Genes For Shiga Toxin From Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1, Nancy A. Strockbine, Matthew Jackson, Lawrence Sung, Randall Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien Jan 1988

Cloning And Sequencing Of The Genes For Shiga Toxin From Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1, Nancy A. Strockbine, Matthew Jackson, Lawrence Sung, Randall Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien

United States Public Health Resources

The structural genes for Shiga toxin, designated stx A and stx B, were cloned from Shigella dysenteriae type 1 3818T, and a nucleotide sequence analysis was performed. Both stx A and stx B were present on a single transcriptional unit, with stx A preceding stx B. The molecular weight calculated for the processed A subunit was 32,225, while the molecular weight of the processed B subunit was 7,691. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences for Shiga toxin and Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) from Escherichia coli revealed that the genes for Shiga toxin and SLT-I were greater than 99% homologous; three nucleotide …

The Importance Of Interstate Highways To Economic Development In Nebraska, David M. Ambrose, Louis G. Pol Jan 1988

The Importance Of Interstate Highways To Economic Development In Nebraska, David M. Ambrose, Louis G. Pol

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter focuses on one aspect of economic growth: the post-construction effect of interstate highways on income and sales expansion. Using data for all Nebraska and Iowa counties, interstate highways are found to have the most positive economic impact on areas with larger populations; small areas are not likely to experience much more than short-term gains. This finding has significant implications for the planned construction of a north-south, four-lane highway in Nebraska. The route of such a highway should be selected only after a careful look at the ability of local areas to capitalize on highway-induced growth impulses.

Child Day Care Policy Issues In Nebraska, Christine M. Reed Jan 1988

Child Day Care Policy Issues In Nebraska, Christine M. Reed

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter looks at the Nebraska child day care market. A review of the day care arrangements made by working parents for their preschoolers indicates that the majority use home day care - in the home of a relative, friend, neighbor, or family day care home proprietor. This predominance, together with evidence that sixty percent of all day care is informal, unregulated care, suggests three policy strategies for improving the quality of home day care in Nebraska: strengthening and expanding family day care rules; subsidizing quality home day care for the working poor; and expanding specialized training for home day …

Elaine Goodale Eastman And The Failure Of The Feminist Protestant Ethic, Ruth Ann Alexander Jan 1988

Elaine Goodale Eastman And The Failure Of The Feminist Protestant Ethic, Ruth Ann Alexander

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Elaine Goodale Eastman's childhood dreams of becoming a writer were not to be fulfilled as she imagined them. Her literary talent was subverted by conflicting forces in her life to which she also subscribed but that thwarted the artistic development of that talent. Although she wrote throughout her ninety years and couldn't remember a time that she wouldn't rather write than eat, she never satisfied "the notion ... unreasonably in the back of my head that someday I might write a book that would live."! If she is remembered at all it is as the wife of the Sioux physician …

Women And Technology On The Great Plains, 1910-40, Katherine Jellson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

What is in store for the homesteader's wife? Nothing but to deteriorate ... the homesteader can do nothing but make a scanty living while his wife and family go unclad and scarely fed, with no conveniences in the home, no society, no preaching ... when you live where you can see sad-faced women, with their children crying about their skirts for things to eat, eager for even a drink of sour milk-good, pretty women, whose hair turns gray in a few weeks· of worry over where the work is coming from to buy flour-we then wonder if Uncle Sam couldn't …

G88-886 Growing Sprouts, Debra Schwarze

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Ways to grow different sprouts are discussed in this NebGuide.

Sprouts are tasty and delicious, and growing them is a simple process, although it does require a few minutes of your time each day to get quality sprouts.

They can be grown year-round, and provide an opportunity for simple gardening projects for limited spaces and for children. Seeds often used for sprouting include mung bean, soybean, lentil and alfalfa.

When purchasing seeds for sprouting, be sure to get seeds that have not been treated with a fungicide, insecticide or any other material. This type of seed is available at health …

G88-864 Handling Internal Worm Parasitism In Sheep, Dale M. Grotelueschen, Don Ferguson, Ted Doane Jan 1988

G88-864 Handling Internal Worm Parasitism In Sheep, Dale M. Grotelueschen, Don Ferguson, Ted Doane

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication acquaints the reader with methods of preventing, controlling, and treating parasitism in sheep.

Introduction

Parasites or worms affecting the digestive system are a severe health problem in sheep production. The economic losses from parasitism can be extensive, ranging from mortality or death loss to weight loss, reduced weight gain, reduced wool production, decreased milk yield resulting in lower lamb weights, poor reproductive performance, and the cost of medications and handling.

Coccidiosis, another costly intestinal parasite, but not caused by worm infestation, will be discussed briefly.

G88-883 Managing Of Disease To Produce Antibiotic/Residue Free Animal Food Products, Duane Rice, R. Gene White Jan 1988

G88-883 Managing Of Disease To Produce Antibiotic/Residue Free Animal Food Products, Duane Rice, R. Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the use of antibiotics in animals, approved drugs and extra-label drugs, and ways to test for drug residue. Infectious diseases in livestock are costly, and prevention is the best approach to minimize such losses. Yet despite good management practices and extensive preventive measures, disease outbreaks do occur, and treatments become necessary. To obtain antibiotic residue-free products from food animals, knowledgeable decisions regarding the use of medications are necessary. It is important to realize that antibiotic treatments are used only to eliminate or shorten the duration of existing infections, or to prevent secondary bacterial infections. These infections may …

G88-878 Management For Disease Prevention In Feedlots, Gene White, Duane Rice, Don Hudson, Dale Grotelueschen Jan 1988

G88-878 Management For Disease Prevention In Feedlots, Gene White, Duane Rice, Don Hudson, Dale Grotelueschen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

When cattle are put in feedlots, they change diets and environments. This NebGuide discusses ways to minimize possible losses caused by those changes. Cattle are a vital link in the human food chain in the United States. The utilized agricultural area in this country is about 1.06 million acres, of which 64 percent is range (government and private). Grazing is the only practical method of harvesting these valuable resources. Ruminants convert forage produced by the soil nutrients, water and solar energy to a high quality protein source for humans. The feedlot phase of cattle feeding follows the utilization of roughages …
