Back in the good old days, when the telephone business was simpler and Saturday night television was worth watching, I can remember Ted Knight the newsman (remember him on The Mary Tyler Moore Show?) looking off into some imagined horizon in the newsroom when asked how he happened to come to his current position. With head cocked upward and his hand clutching his right lapel, he'd start in his deepest, most pompous voice: “lt all started in a small, 5,000-watt radio station..." Around here it a!! started with a 12,000-line, decade-old Centrex system and a new hospital building going up …
G90-962 Introducing Solid Foods To Babies, Darlene Martin
G90-962 Introducing Solid Foods To Babies, Darlene Martin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains when and how to add solid foods to your baby's diet.
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of a baby's growth and development. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breast-feeding for most full-term infants. No formula can replace the immunological protection a baby receives from colostrum -- the breast milk produced the first few days after birth. It's important to breast-feed for at least the first few weeks, even if it can't be continued for a long time. If breast-feeding is not your choice, or if it is discontinued before the baby's first birthday, commercially prepared infant …
Ncr90-379 Sheep Diseases, R.M. Jordan
Ncr90-379 Sheep Diseases, R.M. Jordan
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sheep do get sick, but fewer would die if producers recognized that a problem existed, made the correct diagnosis, and treated sheep in the most effective manner. Correct diagnosis is most difficult. It requires experience, and the only way to get that experience is to make the effort. Consulting with your veterinarian can be most helpful.
The following brief comments are intended to provide some help in diagnosing, treating, and preventing some of the more prevalent health problems of sheep.

Distributions Of Genetic Markers In A Nebraska Population, Reena Roy, Karen Schmidt, Robert E. Gaensslen
Distributions Of Genetic Markers In A Nebraska Population, Reena Roy, Karen Schmidt, Robert E. Gaensslen
United States Public Health Resources
Seven genetic marker systems were analyzed from liquid blood and dried bloodstain specimens submitted to the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory from various law enforcement agencies throughout Nebraska. The phenotypic and genotypic frequencies for the ABO, Lewis, esterase D (ESD), pbosphoglucomutase (PGM), adenylate kinase (AK), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and haptoglobin (HP) systems were calculated. The results indicate that the phenotypic frequencies are generally in agreement with frequencies reported in other populations in the United States.

A rapid diagnostic method employing a polymerase chain reaction procedure (PCR) was used to identify Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia Coli. This procedure amplified a region of the invasive-associated locus (ial) from a crude DNA extract of feces. A synthetic 21-base oligonucleotide corresponding to the ial gene sequence was shown to specifically hybridize only with enteroinvasive E. Coli (EIEC) strains and Shigella species. Upon PCR amplification, a 320-base pair fragment was generated in DNA extracted from feces reconstituted with EIEC or Shigella flexneri but not in DNA from 70 normal stools lacking these organisms and could be readily …

Mortality surveys and death certificate studies have suggested an association between leukemia and farming. To investigate whether exposure to carcinogens in an agricultural setting is related to risk of leukemia, the authors conducted a population-based case-control inter view study of 578 white men with leukemia and 1245 controls living in Iowa and Minnesota. Consistent with recent mortality studies, there were slight, but significant, elevations in risk for all leukemia (odds ratio (OR) 1.2) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (OR 1.4) for farmers compared to nonfarmers. There were no significant associations with leukemia for exposure to specific fungicides, herbicides (including 2.4-1) and …

Raman Spectroscopy Of Synthetic Antimicrobial Frog Peptides Magainin 2a And Pgla, Robert W. Williams, Ruth Starman, Kenneth M. P. Taylor, Kenneth Gable, Troy Beeler, Michael Zasloff, David Covell
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Magainin and PGLa are 23- and 21-residue peptides isolated from the skin of the African clawed frog Xenopus lueuis. They protect the frog from infection and exhibit a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity in vitro. The mechanism of this activity involves the interaction of magainin with microbial membranes. We have measured the secondary structure and membrane-perturbing ability of these peptides to obtain information about this mechanism. Our results show that mgn2a forms a helix with an average length of less than 20 Å upon binding to liposomes. At high concentrations (50 mg/mL) mgn2a spontaneously solubilizes phosphatidylcholine liposomes at temperatures above the …
Review Of Emily Davies And The Liberation Of Women, Kathleen Adams, Daphne Bennett
Review Of Emily Davies And The Liberation Of Women, Kathleen Adams, Daphne Bennett
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Daphne Bennett has rewritten, in this book on Emily Davies, the history of the feminist movement. She seethes when she hears people talk about the movement as though it began with the suffragettes, for her heroine had been working for the emancipation of women for 50 years before the suffragettes were making themselves noticed in no uncertain manner.
Emily Davies was one of the great pioneers in the cause of women but little is, or has been, really known about her. She has often been confused with Emily Davison who threw herself under the feet of the King's horse, but …

"Proving Up And Moving Up": Jewish Homesteading Activity In North Dakota, 1900-1920, Janet E. Schulte
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the spring of 1908, Morris Zemsky, a Russian- Jewish immigrant homesteading in Ashley, North Dakota, sent a letter to the Industrial Removal Office (IRO) of the Baron de Hirsch Fund in New York. Joseph Kaminer, Secretary of the Ashley Farmer's Bureau, wrote the note for Zemsky, who spoke only Yiddish. The letter requested advice on the condition of Zemsky's parents "who are now in New York and are actually starving to death. As they are several in the family and no one of them can find work."1 Zemsky requested the IRO to send his parents to his North …
Review Of Hasinai: A Traditional History Of The Caddo Confederacy, Dee Ann Story
Review Of Hasinai: A Traditional History Of The Caddo Confederacy, Dee Ann Story
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This slender but far ranging volume presents the modem Hasinai Caddo view of their origin and traditional lifeways. It is based primarily on oral traditions and secondarily on published and archival material. The information culled from these sources is woven into a framework of twelve chapters, each of which is introduced by a description of a dance. All but one of the dances make up a night's cycle of ceremonial song and dance that reenact the tribal history.
Spanish Exploration And The Great Plains In The Age Of Discovery: Myth And Reality, Ralph H. Vigil
Spanish Exploration And The Great Plains In The Age Of Discovery: Myth And Reality, Ralph H. Vigil
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
T his essay attempts to place Spanish exploration on the Great Plains within the context of the temper and feelings prevailing in the first century of the "discovery" of the West. 1 Because many writers of texts and more specialized works view the past in the light of the present, European expansion in the sixteenth century appears to be more modem than it was. This paper views Spaniards of the early colonial period as more medieval than modem in outlook; it also suggests that mythological geography and mixed spiritual and worldly motives, considered incompatible in our day, were as important …
Review Of Women With Vision: The Presentation Sisters Of South Dakota, 1880-1985, Sandra Schackel
Review Of Women With Vision: The Presentation Sisters Of South Dakota, 1880-1985, Sandra Schackel
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the mid-eighteenth century, a young Irish woman, Nano Nagle, renounced her wealthy upper-class background and dedicated herself to ministering to the poor. Her belief in "women's potential as nurturers and ethical models for children" prompted her to establish several schools for needy boys and girls as well as to minister to the sick. After Nagle's death, the order she founded in 1776 became known as the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and as part of a growing movement among Catholics in America in the ineteenth century, the Presentation sisters expanded their outreach to the American …
Centennial On The Northen Plains: An Introduction, George Mcgovern
Centennial On The Northen Plains: An Introduction, George Mcgovern
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Although I am now sixty-eight years old, I have thought of myself during the past half century since my eighteenth birthday as a young man. Perhaps that is partly because I have been blessed with good health and personal vigor, but it may also be because I was born and reared in a young State. South Dakota was only thirtytwo years old when I first came on the scene at Avon in 1922. My father, a pioneer Dakota clergyman, whom I always thought of as an old man, was born in 1868--twenty-one years before South Dakota achieved statehood. He knew …
Review Of A Stranger In Her Native Land: Alice Fletcher And The American Indians, John R. Wunder
Review Of A Stranger In Her Native Land: Alice Fletcher And The American Indians, John R. Wunder
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This is the best written biography I have read in many years. A beautifully crafted book, it is a comprehensive picture and excellent scholarly treatment of a most unpleasant person, a person one can have little sympathy for in today's world. And yet, to the credit of the author, one comes away from this work having a much greater understanding of Alice Fletcher and a more balanced view of the meaning of her work.
The Psychopath And The Definition Of "Mental Disease Or Defect" Under The Model Penal Code Test Of Insanity: A Question Of Psychology Or A Question Of Law?, Emily Campbell
Nebraska Law Review
The psychopath presents a number of issues for the legal system, in particular the question of criminal responsibility. Specifically, is psychopathy a condition which should relieve a criminal defendant of responsibility for his actions? Part II of this Comment describes the characteristics of psychopathy so the reader will have a better understanding of the type of individual in question. In addition, Part II presents the current psychiatric criteria for labeling an individual a psychopath. Part III of this Comment presents the prominent psychiatric view that psychopaths by virtue of their diagnosis should be exonerated from criminal liability. This view has …
