The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of dose of exogenous progesterone (P4) prior to artificial insemination on concentrations of 17β-estradiol (E2) and on conception rates in bovine females. Heifers (n = 100) and cows (n = 100) received P4-releasing intravaginal devices (PRIDs) to produce two different circulating concentrations of P4. All animals received a single PRID 10 days before (Day -10) the start of the breeding season (Day 0). In animals that received the low dose of P4 (1 PRID, target concentration of 2-3 ng/ml of plasma), …

Sequencing Two Dna Templates In Five Channels By Digital Compression, Michaela Nelson, Yanping Zhang, David L. Steffens, Reingard Grabherr, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
By applying algebraic coding methods to the Sanger dideoxynucleotide procedure, DNA sequences of two templates can be determined simultaneousl in only flve reactions and data channels. A 5:2 data compression is accomplished by instantaneous source coding of nucleotide sequence pairs into one set of 5-bit block codes. A general algebraic expression, 2" - 1 ≥ 4f, describes conditions under which f DNA templates can be sequenced using n channels. Such compression sequencing is accurate and effcient, as demonstrated by manual 35S autoradiographic detection and automated on-line analysis using fluorescent-labeled primers. Symmetric 5:2 compression is especially useful when …

In the central Great Plains, crested wheatgrasses [Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaetner and A. desertorium (Fischer ex Link) Schultes] are best utilized for early spring and late fall grazing. The principal objective of this study was to determine if beef (Bos Taurus L.) yearlings grazing ‘Ruff’ (A. cristatum) during the spring grazing season had higher average daily gains and gains per hectare than cattle grazing ‘Nordan’ (A. desertorum). These cultivars were evaluated in grazing trials (four replications) in eastern Nebraska in 1985, 1986, and 1987. The 0.8-ha pastures were seeded in the fall of 1983 …

Regulatory Takings—Winds Of Change Blow Along The South Carolina Coast: Lucas V. South Carolina Coastal Council, 112 S. Ct. 2886 (1992), Kent A. Meyerhoff
Nebraska Law Review
In Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council, the United States Supreme Court, in an opinion authored by Justice Scalia, held that "[W]hen the owner of real property has been called upon to sacrifice all economically beneficial uses in the name of the common good, that is, to leave his property economically idle, he has suffered a taking." After years of struggling with the issue, the Court has taken an initial step that may shift the balance between public regulation and private property rights in favor of the landowner. This Note examines the impact that Lucas could have on the …

Promoting Therepeutic Objectives Through Lb 518: A Sane Amendment To Nebraska Law Governing The Disposition Of Insanity Acquittees, Sherin S. Vitro
Nebraska Law Review
LB 518 represents the most recent proposal to amend Nebraska law governing disposition of individuals acquitted of crimes by reason of insanity. The bill proposes to change the kind of evidence relevant to evaluating the dangerousness of an insanity acquittee. Additionally, the bill provides courts with authority to order a variety of treatment programs. This Note examines the provisions of LB 518 in light of issues encompassed by the growing body of scholarship known as therapeutic jurisprudence. First, the Note introduces the background, procedural history, and substantive provisions of LB 518. Second, the Note analyzes the bill's provisions from a …

1993 Issues Review
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
This self-study document was prepared by the faculty and staff of the South Central Research and Extension Center in preparation for the unit review.
The format for this review differs from past reviews in two primary areas. First, the review focuses on issues; thus the emphasis is on looking forward rather than evaluating the past. Second, the review team is largely composed of IANR staff who are familiar with the organization and programming processes. Because of these differences, this document emphasizes the issues and the processes which occurred to arrive at this point. The limited background data is included to …
A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center
A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center
Nebraska Forest Service: Publications
Trees growing within cities and towns form a forest-an urban forest. But urban trees require special attention, because they are expected to exist within the urban environment. With its infrastructure of streets, sidewalks, curbs, buried utilities, overhead power lines and buildings, the urban environment places tremendous stresses on trees. With proper care, trees become assets which grow in value over time. Without care, tree value declines, eventually becoming a liability to the community. The Technical Guide to Urban Forestry was produced to help communities develop, manage and protect their urban forest resources. The purpose of this publication is to provide …

Water-quality data were collected from 147 rivers and streams during 1989-90 to determine the temporal and geographic distribution of selected preemergent herbicides, two atrazine metabolites, and nitrate in 10 Midwestern States. This report includes a description of the sampling design, data-collection techniques, laboratory and analytical methods, and a compilation of constituent concentrations and quality-assurance data. All water samples were collected by depth-integrating techniques at three to five locations across the wetted perimeter of each stream. Sites were sampled three times in 1989~before application of herbicides, during the first major runoff after application of herbicides, and in the fall during a …
An Investigation Of Trace Element Contamination At Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.
An Investigation Of Trace Element Contamination At Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Bamforth National Wildlife Refuge (Bamforth) located in southeast
Wyoming serves as an important resting area for several species of migratory
waterbirds. Surveys were conducted in the summer months of 1992 to
determine bird use at Bamforth. Sediment, water, and biota were collected
from Bamforth to identify wetlands with potential contaminant problems that
may be affecting migratory waterbirds. Mercury and lead in water samples
were above criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Selenium levels in
vegetation and sediment were elevated above concentrations documented to
bioaccumulate and cause adverse reproductive effects in waterfowl. Selenium
levels in waterbird eggs were slightly greater …

Preventive Interventions In Early Adolescence: Developmental And Contextual Challenges, Bonnie L. Barber, Lisa J. Crockett
Preventive Interventions In Early Adolescence: Developmental And Contextual Challenges, Bonnie L. Barber, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Adolescence today is broadly perceived as a more difficult and dangerous period than in previous decades. Those holding this view point to increases in teenage pregnancy and childbearing, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, juvenile arrests, depression, and suicide as indicators of changing conditions. Although uncommon in childhood, these problems increase in early adolescence, and they can lead to greater likelihood of negative developmental trajectories. Because young adolescents are at the age when these issues are surfacing, they are a particularly important target group for interventions designed to prevent or delay the onset of negative behavior patterns (Crockett & …

“Introduction” To Developmental Perspectives On Motivation, Janis Jacobs
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This volume marks the 40th anniversary of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, and with it a renewed commitment to the Symposium's original focus on motivation. Although we may reemphasize the topic, it is clear that motivation, as an area of study, has changed dramatically over the past 40 years. Although motivation has remained an important theme, it has had to share the stage with other important topics as the field of psychology has expanded. In addition, the concept of motivation has been applied to many diverse areas, has been defined and measured in a variety of ways, and has been …
Comparative Toxicity Of Pyrethroid Insecticides To Terrestrial And Aquatic Insects, Blair Siegfried
Comparative Toxicity Of Pyrethroid Insecticides To Terrestrial And Aquatic Insects, Blair Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The acute toxicities of three pyrethroid insecticides (permethrin, cypermethrin, and bifenthrin) and one organophosphate insecticide (chlorpyrifos) were compared by topical application and static exposure to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects. Mayflies and damselflies were the most susceptible taxa tested by both exposure methods. The aquatic insects were generally more susceptible than the terrestrial insects when compared on a dose per body weight basis, although the differences were smaller than expected, given the extremely low concentrations that produce toxic effects by static exposure.

The Contexts Of Housework And The Paid Labor Force: Women’S Perceptions Of The Demand Levels Of Their Work, Sheryl J. Grana, Helen A. Moore, Janet K. Wilson, Michelle Miller
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This research explores the work perceptions, both physical and mental, of women. The research finds that women’s perceptions of waged and nonwaged labor differ greatly depending on the work environment. Perceptions of physical demands of waged labor are almost solely dependent on the type of paid labor women engage in. For homeworkers, perceptions of physical labor are influenced primarily by the number of hours invested in housework. The mental demands of waged and nonwaged labor are also perceived differently. Women in the waged economy report significantly higher mental demands than do homeworkers. This too varies across labor segments. The closest …
Biology And Control Of Cattle Grubs, Philip J. Scholl
Biology And Control Of Cattle Grubs, Philip J. Scholl
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
PERSPECTIVES AND OVERVIEW
Two species of cattle grubs (Diptera: Oestridae) affect cattle in the Northern Hemisphere: Hypoderma iineatum, the common cattle grub or lesser cattle warble fly, and Hypoderma bovis, the northern cattle grub or larger cattle warble fly. The word warble is Anglo-Saxon for boil.
Adults of the cattle grub are commonly known as heel flies, warble flies, bomb flies, or gad flies. This parasite has been observed and recorded for centuries (159), and Bracy Clark (50) cited and discussed references from Biblical times to Shakespeare. Scientific observations on the biology were first recorded in the 1700s …

Activity And Electrophoretic Characterization Of Esterases In Insecticide-Resistant And Susceptible Strains Of German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), Suresh K. Prabhakaran, Shripat T. Kamble
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), were tested for resistance to three insecticides using the time-mortality response technique in comparison with known susceptible strains. Dursban-R and Macy strains indicated high levels of resistance to chlorpyrifos and moderate resistance to propoxur and cypermethrin. The hydrolytic activity of esterase enzymes was determined with a model substrate, p-nitrophenyl acetate. The specific activity of the enzymes increased with a corresponding increase in substrate concentration. Maximum activity was observed at 80 μM. The resistant strains had Significantly higher activity than the susceptible strains. The enzyme activity also increased with an increase in pH. …

An Investigation Of The Exclusion Of Students With Disabilities In National Data Collection Programs, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Martha L. Thurlow, Amy N. Spiegel
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This investigation examined the extent to which students with disabilities are involved in a select sample of national data collection programs that are playing a pivotal role in the measurement-driven educational reform movement. Nine data collection programs that are receiving significant attention in current educational reform initiatives were reviewed. The results suggest that approxi-mately 40% to 50% of school-age students with disabilities are excluded from some of the most prom-inent national educational data collection programs. In contrast, students with disabilities are included to a greater degree in noneducational data collection programs that do not require partici-pation in direct assessment activities. …
Effects Of Response Strategy And Retention Interval On Performance Of Clark’S Nutcrackers In A Radial Maze Analogue, Deborah J. Olson, Alan C. Kamil, Russell P. Balda
Effects Of Response Strategy And Retention Interval On Performance Of Clark’S Nutcrackers In A Radial Maze Analogue, Deborah J. Olson, Alan C. Kamil, Russell P. Balda
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Two groups of Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) were trained to use either a stay or shift response strategy in a radial maze analogue. Each trial had a preretention stage, a retention interval, and a postretention test. In Experiment 1, acquisition with a 5-min retention interval was studied. Response strategy did not affect the rate at which the task was learned. Performance following longer retention intervals was tested in Experiments 2-4. Changes in retention intervals were presented in trial blocks of increasing duration in Experiment 2 and were randomly presented between trials in Experiment 3. Experiment 4 extended the …
Regulation Of ΣB Levels And Activity In Bacillus Subtilis, Andrew K. Benson, William G. Haldenwang
Regulation Of ΣB Levels And Activity In Bacillus Subtilis, Andrew K. Benson, William G. Haldenwang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The sigB operon of Bacilus subtilis encodes (σB plus three additional proteins (RsbV, RsbW, and RsbX) that regulate σB activity. Using an anti-σB monoclonal antibody to monitor the levels of (σB protein, PSPAC to control the expression of the sigB operon, and a ctc-lacZ reporter system to monitor σB activity, we observed that the rsbV and rsbW products control (σB activity at the ctc promoter independently of their effects on (σB levels. In contrast, RsbX was found to have no effect on expression of ctc when the sigB operon was controlled by …
Bacillus Subtilis ΣB Is Regulated By A Binding Protein (Rsbw) That Blocks Its Association With Core Rna Polymerase, Andrew K. Benson, William G. Haldenwang
Bacillus Subtilis ΣB Is Regulated By A Binding Protein (Rsbw) That Blocks Its Association With Core Rna Polymerase, Andrew K. Benson, William G. Haldenwang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
σB is a secondary σ factor of Bacillus subtilis. RNA polymerase containing cr transcribes a subset of genes that are expressed after heat shock or the onset of the stationary phase of growth. Three genes (rsbV, rsbW, and rsbX), cotranscribed with the σB structural gene (sigB), regulate o dependent gene expression. RsbW is the primary inhibitor of this system with the other gene products acting upstream of RsbW in the σB regulatory pathway. Evidence is now presented that RsbW inhibits σB-dependent transcription by binding to crB and blocking …
The ΣB-Dependent Promoter Of The Bacillus Subtilis Sigb Operon Is Induced By Heat Shock, Andrew K. Benson, W. G. Haldenwang
The ΣB-Dependent Promoter Of The Bacillus Subtilis Sigb Operon Is Induced By Heat Shock, Andrew K. Benson, W. G. Haldenwang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
σB, a secondary sigma factor of Bacillus subtilis, was found to increase 5- to 10-fold when cultures were shifted from 37 to 48°C. Western blot (immunoblot) analyses, in which monoclonal antibodies specific for the sigB operon products RsbV, RsbW, and σB were used to probe extracts from wild-type and mutant B. subtilis strains, revealed that all three proteins increased coordinately after heat shock and that this increase was dependent on σB but not RsbV, a positive regulator normally essential for σB-dependent sigB expression. Nuclease protection experiments of RNA synthesized after heat shock supported …
Unpopular But Not Unfair: The Fifth Circuit Considers The Terms But Ignores The Endearment In Mcgann V. H & H Music Co., 946 F.2d 410 (5th Cir. 1991), Cert. Denied, 113 S. Ct. 482 (1992), Craig C. Dirrim
Nebraska Law Review
In McGann v. H & H Music Co., the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit enraged AIDS activists and alarmed employees nationwide when it ruled that an employer could effectively "discriminate," albeit indirectly, against employees with life-threatening diseases by decreasing the caps on health benefits to nearly nothing. Recently, the United States Supreme Court denied certiorari in the matter allowing the decisions of the district and circuit courts to stand. This Note analyzes the decision and rationale of the Fifth Circuit. A brief factual background of the case is given, followed by a discussion of the …
The Public Policy Exception To Employment At Will—When Should Courts Defer To The Legislature?, Mark A. Fahleson
The Public Policy Exception To Employment At Will—When Should Courts Defer To The Legislature?, Mark A. Fahleson
Nebraska Law Review
In recent years, the traditional common law rule known as “employment at will,” has come under attack. To temper what they perceived as harsh and unjust results from the rigid application of an anachronistic rule, courts and legislatures carved out a variety of exceptions to the at-will employment doctrine. The decline of this venerable doctrine has not been without side-effects; the exceptions have sacrificed the stability, predictability, and economic efficiency the rule provides. The American employment at-will rule has been modified via statutory and judicial fiat. Congress and state legislatures have narrowed the at-will rule through a variety of statutes, …
