Tree Squirrels, Jeffrey J. Jackson
Tree Squirrels, Jeffrey J. Jackson
Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook
In this chapter tree squirrels are divided into three groups: large tree squirrels, pine squirrels, and flying squirrels. Large tree squirrels include fox (Sciurus niger), eastern gray (Sciurus carolinensis), western gray (Sciurus griseus), and tassel-eared (Sciurus aberti) squirrels. Fox squirrels (Fig. 1) measure 18 to 27 inches (46 to 69 cm) from nose to tip of tail. They weigh about 1 3/4 pounds (787 g) to 2 1/4 pounds (1,012 g). Color varies greatly, from all black in Florida to silver gray with a white belly in Maryland. Georgia fox squirrels usually have a black face. Ohio and Michigan fox …

Trends And Differentials In Mortality From Cancers Of The Oral Cavity And Pharynx In The United States, 1973-1 987, Howard I. Goldberg, Stuart A. Lockwood, Stephen W. Wyatt, Linda S. Crossett
United States Public Health Resources
Background. This analysis consisted of an examination of trends and differentials in mortality from cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx in the United States for a recent 15-year period.
Methods. The authors have used national cause of death data for the United States and intercensal population estimates to examine mortality from oral and pharyngeal cancers between 1973 and 1987 and to study differentials according to gender, race, and region of residence.
Results. The overall mortality rate from these cancers decreased by 19% during the 15-year period, with most of the decline occurring after 1979. Mortality was …

Effect Of Baculovirus Penaei On Growth And Survival Of Experimentally Infected Postlarvae Of The Pacific White Shrimp, Penaeus Vannamei, Kenneth C. Stuck, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In a series of experiments conducted to investigate age and size-dependent effects of the baculovirus BP on postlarvae of the Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, six groups of specific pathogen-free shrimp of different ages (mysis 2–3 through PL 25) were exposed to the virus and cultured for 15 to 21 days. All BP-exposed groups of early postlarvae (PL 9 or younger) became heavily infected within 2–5 days of initial exposure to the virus, and some of those groups experienced high mortalities compared to the noninfected controls. Postlarvae that survived the infection had highly variable and significantly reduced growth, as …

High Shear Mixing Reactor For Glycerolysis, Hossein Noureddini
Papers in Biomaterials
lnrcreased ervironmental awareness and depletion of resources are driving industry to develop aiternative fuels from renewable resources that are environmentally more acceptable. Esters of fatty acids (biodiesel), derived from the transesterification of vegetable oils, have properties similar to cornponents of petroleum based diesel fuel. Cost has been a major factor in slowing down the commercialization of biodiesel. In order to improve the economy of this process two factors were investigated in this study: 1) use of beef tallow as raw material and 2) by-product utilization.
Glycerol is the by-product of the esterification process. In this work the feasibility of the …

Paraophioidina Scolecoides N. Sp., A New Aseptate Gregarine From Cultured Pacific White Shrimp Penaeus Vannamei, Timothy C. Jones, Robin M. Overstreet, Jeffrey M. Lotz, Paul F. Frelier
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The aseptate gregarine Paraophloidina scolecoides n. sp. (Eugregarinorida: Lecudinidae) heavily infected the midgut of cultured larval and postlarval specimens of Penaeus vannamei from a commercial 'seed-production' facility in Texas, USA. It is morphologically similar to P. korotneffi and P. vibiliae, but it can be distinguished from them and from other members of the genus by having gamonts associated exclusively by lateral syzygy. Shrimp acquired the infection at the facility; nauplii did not show any evidence of infection, but protozoea, mysis, and postlarval shrimp had a prevalence and intensity of infection ranging from 56 to 80 % and 10 to …

Drought Profile: Haryana State In North India, K. Kailasa Nathan
Drought Profile: Haryana State In North India, K. Kailasa Nathan
Drought Network News (1994–2001)
Haryana state is considered the breadbasket of India, along with the Punjab state. The effects of drought (and mitigation of those effects) are therefore of considerable importance for the state. This article considers the state’s drought “profile” through a study of six drought years in Haryana.
Haryana has a semiarid climate in the southwest and a Gangetic plain environment in the rest of the state. About 50% of the state has a moisture deficit. One of the reasons for adverse crop production in the state during June–September is the early withdrawal or late onset of monsoon rains, which contribute nearly …

Two Women On The Verge Of A Contextual Breakthrough: Using 'A Feminist Dictionary' In The Literature Classroom, Sheila Reiter, Barbara Dibernard
Two Women On The Verge Of A Contextual Breakthrough: Using 'A Feminist Dictionary' In The Literature Classroom, Sheila Reiter, Barbara Dibernard
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Barbara: The following dialogue relates our experiences using A Feminist Dictionary (AFD) in literature classes. My perspective is that of a feminist teacher who has found AFD to be a useful tool in bringing feminist theory and practice into alignment in the classroom. I believe it is crucial to connect the personal and the public and to connect theory and practice. One of my primary goals as a teacher is to get students to see them selves as agents who are capable of resistance and of personal and social change. In order to facilitate that, we examine hierarchy and power …

Prairie Conservation In North America, Fred Sampson, Fritz Knopf
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
The health and future of the earth's ecological systems (Dailey and Ehrlich 1992), their link to the well being of communities and nations (Raven 19901, and the ever-increasing rate of loss of species, communities, and ecological systems (Myers 1993) are among issues drawing biological diversity into the mainstream of conservation worldwide. Yet. in North America, there is no single, established priority in the conservation of biological diversity. In recent years, a great deal of attention has been paid to the problem of tropical and temperate deforestation in part because of profound consequences to the conservation of biological diversity (Harris 1984, …

On The Linear Extrapolation To Low Doses, Robert Katz, Michael P. R. Waligórski
On The Linear Extrapolation To Low Doses, Robert Katz, Michael P. R. Waligórski
Robert Katz Publications
While radiobiological data are conveniently fitted by a linear quadratic formula to data of limited dynamic range at doses typically exceeding 1 Gy, they are extrapolated linearly to doses below a milligray for the evaluation of low dose RBEs. However a single relativistic electron passing through a cell nucleus deposits a “dose” there in the neighborhood of a milligray. The validity of the linear extrapolation then rests on the demonstration that a single electron transit through a cell nucleus can cause inactivation or mutation or can lead to cancer induction. The extrapolation made is a huge one, of some three …
Effecting Change By The Use Of Consultative Coaching With The Primary Caregivers Of Language Delayed Preschoolers, Sari Jeanne Giles
Effecting Change By The Use Of Consultative Coaching With The Primary Caregivers Of Language Delayed Preschoolers, Sari Jeanne Giles
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This study examined the effect of a speech-language pathologist using consultative coaching with the primary caregivers (PCG) of two expressive language delayed preschool children. The coaching was designed to improve the PCG’s use of specific communication behaviors and strategies to facilitate growth in the child’s communicative behaviors. Specifically, the consultative coaching encouraged the PCG to (1) follow the child’s lead (2) use self and parallel talk (3) expand on the child’s verbal productions and (4) use open-ended questions. Two dyads, made up of expressive language delayed preschool children and their primary caregivers, were the subjects in single subject multiple-baseline designs. …
Women And The Great Retrenchment: The Political Economy Of Gender In The 1980s, Ann Mari May
Women And The Great Retrenchment: The Political Economy Of Gender In The 1980s, Ann Mari May
College of Business: Faculty Publications
Policy analysts and scholars are only now beginning the serious task of sifting through the debris of the 1980s to chronicle the impacts of policy chtinges and to evaluate the policies as well as the policymakers. The 1980s will no doubt be remembered as having produced the worst recession since the Great Depression and perhaps, more generally, as a period of economic retrenchment [Dugger 1992]. While many segments of society were affected by the restructuring inherent in Reaganomics, the impact on women merits special attention, particularly in light of demographic changes in voting behavior. It has long been understood that …

Coordination Of Selenium To Molybdenum In Formate Dehydrogenase H From Escherichia Coli, Vadim Gladyshev, Sergei V. Khangulov, Milton J. Axley, Thressa A. Stadtman
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
Formate dehydrogenase H from Escherichia col contains multiple redox centers, which include a molybdopterin cofactor, an iron-sulfur center, and a selenocysteine residue (SeCys-140 in the polypeptide chain) that is essential for catalytic activity. Here we show that addition of formate to the native enzyme induces a signal typical of Mo(V) species. This signal is detected by electron pm etc resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Substitution of 77Se for natural isotope abundance Se leads to transformation of this signal, indicating a direct coordination of Se with Mo. Mutant enzyme with cysteine substituted at position 140 for the selenocysteine residue has decreased catalytic activity …

Social networks and daily activities of children and adolescents living and/or working on the streets of a large Brazilian city were examined. Drawing on data collected through structured surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations, we described street youths’ family situation, social resources, institutional experiences, survival activities, and problem behaviors and investigated differences attributable to age, gender, and living situation (at home or on the street). Youngsters who lived at home and worked on the street appeared to be experiencing orderly development despite their impoverished circumstances. Youngsters who lived on the street showed hallmarks of psychological and physical …
