Open Access And U. S. Federal Information Policy, Eric Harbeson
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Federal agencies are directed, as a matter of United States Federal policy, to provide free, immediate public access to peer-reviewed scholarly publications that are produced with support from Federal research grant funding. Because copyright vests in the author of the work, agencies must have permission from the author in order to provide that access. A government-wide regulation, in place since 1976, constitutes one possible source for the needed permission. The “Federal Purpose License” provides that, as a condition of Federal funding, grant recipients issue the granting agency a non-exclusive license to use all works subject to copyright and either developed …

Music And Perceived Stress: An Investigation Into The Effects Of Music On Chemistry Students' Perceived Stress Levels, Alice Young, Eric Malina
Music And Perceived Stress: An Investigation Into The Effects Of Music On Chemistry Students' Perceived Stress Levels, Alice Young, Eric Malina
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Music has long been a prevalent intervention when trying to lower stress in certain populations (Thoma et al., 2013). This study aimed to explore the possible usefulness of music as an intervention for students experiencing stress in the chemistry laboratory setting. Students in general chemistry laboratories were surveyed regarding their stress at the ends of periods in which music was or was not played in their laboratory classes. While the results were not statistically significant, mean stress scores did lower in those groups where music was played. Further research into this topic should focus on type of music, the effects …
Powerless Beings: Solitary Confinement Of Humans And Nonhumans In America, Michael B. Mushlin, David N. Cassuto
Powerless Beings: Solitary Confinement Of Humans And Nonhumans In America, Michael B. Mushlin, David N. Cassuto
Nebraska Law Review
Every day, thousands of humans and millions of nonhumans endure solitary confinement. Human prisoners held in this way are confined for twenty-two to twenty-four hours a day for weeks, months, or even years on end in cells the size of a parking space. For these humans, the experience is tortuous. Captive animals held in solitary confinement similarly spend much of their lives locked into tiny spaces, isolated, and deprived of the types of interactions and environment essential to their wellbeing. And, like humans, they are driven mad. In human and nonhuman settings, the agony of solitary is chillingly alike and …
Shared Housing As A Missing Middle Solution For Rural Communities, Alison Lintal
Shared Housing As A Missing Middle Solution For Rural Communities, Alison Lintal
Nebraska Law Review
There is mounting pressure on municipalities to reform their zoning ordinances to eliminate “exclusive” single-family zoning. Advocates call for the inclusion of more multi-family housing within what have been exclusively single (white nuclear) family spaces. In particular, there is a need for “missing middle housing” which is a range of smaller multi-unit or duplex housing that is similar in scale to single-family homes. Twenty-eight percent of single-family homes are occupied by one person and generationally, Baby Boomers make up the largest portion of sole-person households. Deteriorating housing stock, high development costs, and lack of affordable options continues to hamper affordable …
Funding Futurist Ideas, David Nows
Funding Futurist Ideas, David Nows
Nebraska Law Review
Financial investors traditionally prize entrepreneurial ideas that have the potential to capture a large customer base and generate significant revenue quickly. However, entrepreneurial ideas that have the potential to be world-changing but without substantial and quick revenue potential have difficulty raising the capital they need to launch. This leaves solutions to global problems like climate change, misinformation, poverty, and hunger underfunded compared to technology companies that cater to wealthy audiences.
Borrowing from the templates created by the United States through its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, as well as global programs run through …
Codifying Murphy’S Law: The Necessity Of A Statutory Intrastate Mutual Aid Compact (Imac) In Nebraska, Taylor Brown
Codifying Murphy’S Law: The Necessity Of A Statutory Intrastate Mutual Aid Compact (Imac) In Nebraska, Taylor Brown
Nebraska Law Review
There is an adage that states, “whatever that can go wrong will go wrong.” This idea leads emergency managers to develop ideas and programs which allow political entities to respond to and mitigate disasters. However, there will inevitably be situations where some loss is unavoidable. Ideally, lawyers are heavily involved before and throughout the response to improve these outcomes in a practice known as “litigation mitigation.”
Litigation mitigation has three goals: reduce exposure to legal claims, improve safety, and enhance property protection. One way to accomplish all three of these goals is to seek external assistance when a disaster is …
Planting Law And Democracy In Sustainable Soil, Bruce Ledewitz
Planting Law And Democracy In Sustainable Soil, Bruce Ledewitz
Nebraska Law Review
Constitutional democracy is threatened today in America. Both sides of the angry political aisles claim that they are defending democracy. But they are not. Constitutional democracy can only be protected by planting it in the sustainable soil of forbearance. At one time, that soil was a common religiously grounded ontological realism that did not consider opponents to be enemies. With the “Death of God,” that soil became unavailable. Only when we recover from the cultural nihilism engendered by the “Death of God,” which has undermined the rule of law, can we find new sustainable soil in which constitutional democracy can …

Listening To The Voices Of America, Kathryn J. Edin, Corey D. Fields, David B. Grusky, Jure Leskovec, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Kristen M. Olson, Charles Varner
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
We make the case for building a permanent public-use platform for conducting and analyzing immersive interviews on the everyday lives of Americans. The American Voices Project (AVP)—a widely watched experiment with this new platform—provides important early evidence on its promise. The articles in this issue reveal that, although public-use interview datasets obviously cannot meet all research needs, they do provide new opportunities to study small or hidden populations, new or emerging social problems, reactions to ongoing social crises, submerged values and attitudes, and many other aspects of American life. We conclude that a permanent AVP platform would help build an …
Display Of Battery Items In Web And Mail Surveys: Grids Versus Item-By-Item And Radio Versus Wide Buttons, Kristen M. Olson, Jolene D. Smyth, Angelica Phillips
Display Of Battery Items In Web And Mail Surveys: Grids Versus Item-By-Item And Radio Versus Wide Buttons, Kristen M. Olson, Jolene D. Smyth, Angelica Phillips
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
How to display questions that are part of a battery in self-administered surveys is an important decision. Battery items may be displayed in a grid in a mail survey or computer web survey, but are often displayed as individual items on mobile devices. Although past research has com-pared grids to item-by-item displays in computer and mobile web surveys, almost no work has compared these displays in mail surveys. Additionally, many web survey templates use wide rectangular buttons to select response options in individual items using a mobile-optimized design, different from the standard round answer space format typically used in mail …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and can potentially prevent IBD through microbial-derived metabolites, making it a promising therapeutic avenue. Recent evidence suggests that despite an unclear underlying mechanism, red cabbage juice (RCJ) alleviates Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Thus, the study aims to unravel the molecular mechanism by which RCJ modulates the gut microbiota to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice. Using C57BL/6J mice, we evaluated RCJ’s protective role in DSS-induced colitis through two cycles of 3% DSS. Mice were daily gavaged with PBS or RCJ until the endpoint, and gut microbiota composition …
Exploring Teacher Leadership’S Effect On Teacher Burnout: Does School Rurality Make A Difference?, Jiangang Xia, Sam Butler
Exploring Teacher Leadership’S Effect On Teacher Burnout: Does School Rurality Make A Difference?, Jiangang Xia, Sam Butler
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In literature, both teacher leadership and teacher burnout have been heavily studied. However, it is unknown to what extent teacher leadership makes a difference in teacher burnout, and whether school rurality makes a difference in between. This study fills the research gaps by conceptualising teacher leadership from both instructional and non-instructional dimensions and applying a quantitative method to large-scale national data. Findings revealed that (a) rural teachers presented higher levels of teacher leadership practices; (b) rural and non-rural teachers presented the same levels of burnout; and (c) both instructional and noninstructional dimensions of teacher leadership practices helped reduce teacher burnout …

Determining The Presence And Size Of Shoulder Lesions In Sows Using Computer Vision, Shubham Bery, Tami M. Brown-Bandl, Bradley T. Jones, Gary A. Rohrer, Sudhendu Raj Sharma
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Shoulder sores predominantly arise in breeding sows and often result in untimely culling. Reported prevalence rates vary significantly, spanning between 5% and 50% depending upon the type of crate flooring inside a farm, the animal’s body condition, or an existing injury that causes lameness. These lesions represent not only a welfare concern but also have an economic impact due to the labor needed for treatment and medication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of computer vision techniques in detecting and determining the size of shoulder lesions. A Microsoft Kinect V2 camera captured the top-down depth and …

Palmitate Induces Integrated Stress Response And Lipoapoptosis In Trophoblasts, Prakash Kumar Sahoo, Chandan Krishnamoorthy, Jennifer R. Wood, Corrine Hanson, Ann Anderson-Berry, Justin L. Mott, Sathish Kumar Natarajan
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Maternal obesity increases the risk of childhood obesity and programs the offspring to develop metabolic syndrome later in their life. Palmitate is the predominant saturated free fatty acid (FFA) that is transported across the placenta to the fetus. We have recently shown that saturated FFA in the maternal circulation as a result of increased adipose tissue lipolysis in third trimester of pregnancy induces trophoblast lipoapoptosis. Here, we hypothesized that palmitate induces integrated stress response by activating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and granular stress and lipoapoptosis in trophoblasts. Choriocarcinoma-derived third-trimester placental trophoblast-like cells (JEG-3 and JAR) referred …

Crop Dna Extraction With Lab-Made Magnetic Nanoparticles, Haichuan Wang, Xueqi Zhao, Li Tan, Junwei Zhu, David Hyten
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Molecular breeding methods, such as marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, require high-throughput and cost-effective methods for isolating genomic DNA from plants, specifically from crop tissue or seed with high polysaccharides, lipids, and proteins. A quick and inexpensive high-throughput method for isolating genomic DNA from seed and leaf tissue from multiple crops was tested with a DNA isolation method that combines CTAB extraction buffer and lab-made SA-coated magnetic nanoparticles. This method is capable of isolating quality genomic DNA from leaf tissue and seeds in less than 2 hours with fewer steps than a standard CTAB extraction method. The yield of the …
