Conclusions: Although taste …

Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey Jan 2024

Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Introduction

In all agricultural settings, damage from arthropod pests is inevitable. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was introduced in the 1970’s as a response to increased public awareness of the hazardous effects of pesticides in the environment (Frazier, 2010). Ornamental nursery production is an important sector of US agriculture. In ornamental nurseries, pest damage is the leading cause of revenue loss (Braman et al., 2015). IPM has primarily been implemented for agricultural settings and as IPM is specific to each environment, it is important to explore the use of IPM practices in nursery production. As nurseries are found across the United …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife translocation and cross-species transmission can impede control and elimination of emerging zoonotic diseases. Tracking the geographic origin of both host and virus (i.e., translocation versus local infection) may help determine the most effective response when high-risk cases of emerging pathogens are identified in wildlife. In May 2022, a coyote (Canis latrans) infected with the raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies virus variant (RRV) was collected in Lewis County, West Virginia, USA, an area free from RRV. We applied host population genomics and RRV phylogenetic analyses to determine the most likely geographic origin of the rabid coyote. Coyote …

Harriet Monroe: An American Poet In Vevey. Her Diary Entries, May 16 – July 26, 1898, Harriet Monroe, Michael R. Hill, Deborah Anna Logan

Zea E-Books Collection

Since its inception in 1912, Poetry magazine has been widely regarded as a premier resource for modern poetry and poets. Published in Chicago as Poetry: a Magazine of Verse, its legacy continues today through the Poetry Foundation, a superlative online resource for seekers of poets, poems, and random lines needing identification. A less immediately recognizable legacy is that of its founder, Harriet Monroe (1860–1936), one of those fin de siècle “intellectual women” typically dismissed as a contradiction in terms. But Monroe was a force to be reckoned with, and this beautifully crafted volume participates in the recuperation of a life …

Feminist Geography: Impact And Inclusion In Geographical Research, Michael Atuahene Djan

Nebraska Anthropologist

Feminist theories have significantly influenced the field of geography, challenging traditional notions of objectivity and shedding light on the intricate relationships between place, gender, and society. The emergence of feminist geography has been crucial in advocating for the inclusion of women's perspectives, countering historical marginalization in academic debates. This systematic review aims to summarize and assess the impact of feminist theory on geography, exploring topics such as gendered spaces, feminist methodologies, and the integration of women's voices in research. Utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Checklist, the study employed a thematic analysis of secondary sources. …

The PR/HPA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) site is located in Eastern Nebraska with the goal of improving resilience, sustainability, and profitability of agroecosystems through enhancing ecosystem services and environmental quality, developing strategies for efficient agricultural production, and mitigating and adapting to climate change. To meet this goal, a common experiment and five ancillary experiments have been developed to evaluate prevailing regional practices in grain crop production systems compared to alternative practices in rain-fed and irrigated systems. …

Rising Tides, Rising Premiums, Kevin Freudenburg Jan 2024

Rising Tides, Rising Premiums, Kevin Freudenburg

Nebraska Law Review

Insuring flood-prone properties is a complex insurance problem. Attempts by the U.S. federal government to step in and correct perceived private market failures have often exacerbated the problem by artificially subsidizing building and rebuilding activity in low-lying areas. This article describes the fundamental problems inherent in the design of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by analyzing the program through the lens of the insurance concepts of moral hazard and adverse selection. It also provides a comparative view of flood insurance schemes globally, and suggests possible reforms.

Unfair Discrimination Standards, Actuarial Fairness, And Insurers’ Use Of Big Data, Laura L. Arp Jan 2024

Unfair Discrimination Standards, Actuarial Fairness, And Insurers’ Use Of Big Data, Laura L. Arp

Nebraska Law Review

Technological innovations in insurance rating allow increasingly large sets of data about insureds to be collected, analyzed, and turned into rates. Consumers’ concerns about artificial intelligence can translate into mistrust that their insurance rates accurately reflect the risk they present. In response, regulatory frameworks are being developed for testing these new algorithms. When people encounter the word “discrimination,” they often register a meaning of “unfair discrimination.” However, in the insurance context, “discrimination” is a neutral term.

This Article attempts to unpack the multiple and complex facets present in the definition of unfair discrimination—and in particular proxy discrimination—as applied to insurance, …

Saving The Savings Clause In Federal Habeas Jurisprudence, Alex Kleinjan Jan 2024

Saving The Savings Clause In Federal Habeas Jurisprudence, Alex Kleinjan

Nebraska Law Review

The Great Writ of habeas corpus, safeguarded by our Constitution as an essential guarantor of liberty, took its current shape over the course of American history as Congress established, expanded, and eventually limited the power of federal courts to issue the writ. Although the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 imposed harsh new limitations for federal prisoners seeking habeas relief more than once in the same case, Congress’s amendment of the relevant procedural statutes left intact the “savings clause,” allowing such prisoners to file additional requests for relief where the prisoners’ prior requests were “inadequate or ineffective to …

The Federal Government’S Role As The Warden Of Immigrants, Pedro Gerson Jan 2024

The Federal Government’S Role As The Warden Of Immigrants, Pedro Gerson

Nebraska Law Review

This Essay examines the evolving landscape of immigration enforcement within the broader context of federal confinement in the United States. The current “crisis” at the southern border, characterized by historic levels of migrant influx and shifting political tides toward restrictionism, underscores the federal government’s increasing emphasis on confinement as a tool of migration control. Furthermore, this Essay argues the need to conceptualize federal confinement as a unified system encompassing both immigration detention and incarceration, which reveals the extent to which immigration has become a dominant factor in federal custody. Drawing on data and analysis, it demonstrates that immigration-related offenses now …

Heads Held High And Hands Holding Hope: The Victory And Vulnerabilities Of The Indian Child Welfare Act After Haaland V. Brackeen, Mikayla Jones Jan 2024

Heads Held High And Hands Holding Hope: The Victory And Vulnerabilities Of The Indian Child Welfare Act After Haaland V. Brackeen, Mikayla Jones

Nebraska Law Review

Congress enacted the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in 1978 to mitigate the catastrophic effects of the federal government’s longstanding policy of forcibly removing Indian children from their families and tribal communities. ICWA has safeguarded Indian children and families for decades by setting minimum standards in state child welfare proceedings to prevent unwarranted removals, support family preservation and reunification, and foster cultural and community connection.

However, ICWA has faced numerous legal challenges since its implementation—often on the theory that the law discriminates against Indian children on the basis of race in violation of the Equal Protection Clause. In 2023, the …

Using A Congressional-Executive Agreement To Protect Abortion At Home And Abroad, Amanda V. Landaverde Jan 2024

Using A Congressional-Executive Agreement To Protect Abortion At Home And Abroad, Amanda V. Landaverde

Nebraska Law Review

In the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, the Court rejected the existence of a constitutional right to abortion and obliterated the only federal protection of abortion. Two years after the Court’s decision, Congress has not passed federal legislation protecting abortion, and our country has no national standard on abortion access. In the meantime, in states with draconian abortion restrictions, women are forced to wait until they are at death’s door before the state allows them to have an abortion. This occurs despite the majority of Americans supporting some form of abortion access.

Although potential legislation …

Building And Fostering Honors Communities: Lessons From Social Distancing, Anne Dotter, Kathleen King

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

While scholars of online education have been developing ways to foster a sense of belonging in online spaces for years, many of us in honors were thrown into the deep end for the first time in March 2020. As a result, we are now able to see the potential of online practices in a way we could not previously. This chapter tells the story of how we came to see the value of virtual community made possible by digital technology as an invaluable complement to the in-person work of a twenty-first-century honors program. Before the Work from Home (WFH) era, …
