Morphometric And Geographic Relationships Of Short-Tailed Shrews (Genus Blarina) In Kansas, Iowa, And Missouri, Nancy D. Moncrief, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways May 1982

Morphometric And Geographic Relationships Of Short-Tailed Shrews (Genus Blarina) In Kansas, Iowa, And Missouri, Nancy D. Moncrief, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Shrews of the genus Blarina from Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri were studied morphometrically and karyologically. The ranges of two species, B. brevicauda and B. hylophaga, overlap in a broad zone across southern Iowa and northern Missouri. Morphometric analyses revealed an unexpectedly large amount of cranial variation in B. brevicauda, and confirmed the presence of that species in the Kansas River Valley of northeastern Kansas. Considerable mensural overlap was found in geographic areas in which B. hylophaga and B. brevicauda are sympatric, evincing the need for further karyotypic and morphometric studies in those areas. No formal taxonomic changes are …

Review Of Anthropology On The Great Plains Edited By W. Raymond Wood And Margot Liberty, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This useful collection of review essays issues from the 34th Plains Conference, entitled "Anthropology on the Great Plains: The State of the Art," which took place in Minneapolis in 1976. The contributors were asked to summarize the past and present achievements and the future challenges of Plains anthropological research in the four traditional sub fields of the discipline (physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, archeology, and linguistics) and in a number of specialized topics, including Indian art, music and dance, and education. In their lively introduction, the editors, Raymond Wood and Margot Liberty, express their hopes that this inventory will serve to …

Review Of Stephen Long And American Frontier Exploration By Roger L. Nichols And Patrick L. Halley, John L. Allen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The name of Major Stephen H. Long has been, for most western and frontier historians and geographers, linked inextricably with the "Great American Desert controversy." Fairly or unfairly, scholars have tended to see as Long's major exploratory contribution the creation of the myth of the barren interior which, it has been claimed, prevented settlement of the Great Plains for several decades. This opinion regarding his role and significance as an explorer is unfortunate. Long was by no means the first or only explorer in the West in the first half of the nineteenth century to describe the Plains in negative …

Review Of Ethnicity On The Great Plains Edited By Frederick C. Luebke, Howard Palmer Apr 1982

Review Of Ethnicity On The Great Plains Edited By Frederick C. Luebke, Howard Palmer

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Ethnicity on the Great Plains is a collection of essays based on a conference sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies. The editor has selected some of the best papers from that conference; attempting to maintain a balance among different academic disciplines, ethnic groups discussed, and various subregions of the Great Plains. The focus of the symposia was on the question of the relationship between the physical environment of the Great Plains and the persistence or accommodation of ethnic culture.

The resulting book is a satisfying and pathbreaking multidisciplinary achievement on a neglected topic. The study of rural ethnic …

Review Of The Poles In Oklahoma By Richard M. Bernard, Maria Starczewska- Lambasa Apr 1982

Review Of The Poles In Oklahoma By Richard M. Bernard, Maria Starczewska- Lambasa

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Richard M. Bernard has undertaken the challenging task of writing a history of Polish migration to Oklahoma. As he states in the preface, "The Poles of Oklahoma have not left a very easy trail to follow. They were never more than 4,000 in number according to U.S. census counts. And most Poles who lived in the state at one time or another eventually departed, leaving behind few traces of their sojourn in the area."

The author recaptures the Polish experience in Oklahoma by utilizing bits of information scattered through archives and libraries throughout the state and by relying on oral …

The Landscape Of Ukrainian Settlement In The Canadian West, John C. Lehr Apr 1982

The Landscape Of Ukrainian Settlement In The Canadian West, John C. Lehr

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

To journey through parts of the western interior of Canada at the turn of the century was to experience the cultural landscapes of the peasant heartland of Europe. Nowhere was this more true than on the northerly fringes of the parkland belt and across the. southern reaches of the boreal forest pioneered by Ukrainian immigrants from the Austrian provinces of Galicia and Bukovyna.

Between 1892, when the fIrst small group of seven Ukrainian families settled in Alberta, and 1914, when the outbreak of war in Europe terminated immigration from Austria-Hungary, more than 120,000 Ukrainians settled in Canada.1 Almost all of …

A Digital Archive Of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover, November 1966 Through December 1980, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard R. Heim Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to acquaint the research community with a new data base—a digitized archive of Northern Hemisphere snow cover. Historically, those researchers who needed snow cover data for climatic and atmospheric boundary layer studies have had to rely on the irregularly spaced (and in some regions, sparse) grid of point observations. Northern Hemisphere Weekly Snow and Ice Cover Charts, which are created from analyzed satellite imagery at the National Earth Satellite Service (NESS), have been available on an operational basis since late 1966. Each of these weekly charts for the period November 1966 through December 1980 …

Spatial Structure And Decision-Making Aspects Of Pedestrian Route Selection Through An Urban Environment, Michael R. Hill Jan 1982

Spatial Structure And Decision-Making Aspects Of Pedestrian Route Selection Through An Urban Environment, Michael R. Hill

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The review of literature is hierarchically organized in terms of the pedestrians ever widening spatial skills: walking, crossing streets, and choosing routes. Route choice is conceptualized as a game played upon an urban street system viewed as a graph. Completing a walk requires the sequential selection of edges from those available in the graph. Each sequence of choices is called a strategy. This study is an investigation of the characteristics of strategies employed by pedestrians in their selection of routes from one place to another. Data were collected in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two hundred pedestrians were intercepted, tracked to their destinations, …

American Pioneer Landscapes: An Introduction, Brian W. Blouet Jan 1982

American Pioneer Landscapes: An Introduction, Brian W. Blouet

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The concept of landscape is inseparable from the history and life of the Great Plains region. The idea encompasses the character of the physical environment in relation to the social, economic, and cultural changes mankind has wrought upon the land.

In the past twenty-five years, and in several apparently disparate disciplines, there has been a convergence of interest in the concept of landscape as geographers, historians, art historians, literary critics, anthropologists, and folklorists have worked to produce a much broader understanding of how landscapes are imagined, represented, created, and viewed by different cultures. Geographers in particular have studied the ways …

Towns Of The Western Railroads, John C. Hudson Jan 1982

Towns Of The Western Railroads, John C. Hudson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

From Chicago it is more than twenty-two hundred miles overland to any of the great cities of the Pacific Coast. For almost a century those who made this crossing traveled by train. If they chose to watch, and most did, they saw a three-day pageant of plain, mountain, and desert as it unfolded, hour after hour, across their view from the train window. The high point of the drama might have been an early evening view of Glacier Park, a crossing of the Great salt Lake at dawn, or a midday climb over Glorieta, but the thousands who saw the …

The Pioneer Landscape: An American Dream, David Lowenthal Jan 1982

The Pioneer Landscape: An American Dream, David Lowenthal

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

To speak of pioneers, of the pioneer character, of the pioneer spirit, instantly brings vivid impressi~ns to mind. But what and where is the pioneer landscape? No more elusive or evanescent place exists. The pioneer landscape appears here, there, almost everywhere, for only a moment early in the chronicle of any locale; then it vanishes, never to return. Only once in its history is a place a pioneer country. Other pioneering efforts may follow-the extraction of some hitherto unknown or unusable resource, the creation of some new social orderbut these efforts do not occur in pioneer landscapes or circumstances. Lindbergh …

Learning To Read The Pioneer Landscape: Braudel, Eliade, Turner, And Benton, John Opie

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Looking at different viewpoints about the landscape of middle America is like seeing the Japanese movie Rashomon: it all depends on who is telling the story. We tend to forget, for example, that American origins are intertwined with an agricultural world view. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the United States was predominantly a nation of farmers, and to all appearances it would continue so indefinitely. (It was not until the early twentieth century that more Americans lived in cities than on farms.) The future successful course of America seemed to depend upon vast and open tracts of good …

The Classroom Information Manual

Follow-up

Most courses offered by colleges and universities are housed in what are called general assignment classrooms. Although much similarity exists among classrooms they are not all alike nor do they serve all instructional purposes equally well. Therefore to provide instructors with information about campus classrooms can greatly assist them with their teaching.

David Hoffman's Essay On Professional Deportment And The Current Legal Ethics Debate, Stephen E. Kalish Jan 1982

David Hoffman's Essay On Professional Deportment And The Current Legal Ethics Debate, Stephen E. Kalish

Nebraska Law Review

Is the attorney primarily an advocate or an officer of the court? Commentators attacked the discussion draft of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct for emphasizing the latter and for abandoning the adversarial system. They claimed that the draft was revolutionary in departing from traditional ways. This Commentary has suggested that there has been no departure, for David Hoffman, in 1836, also believed that an attorney was, more an officer of the court than an advocate. Should proper attorney conduct be mandated by rules or should ethics be essentially a matter of personal and professional conscience? The drafts of the …

Uranium-Series Age Of The Eel Point Terrace, San Clemente Island, California, D. R. Muhs, B. J. Szabo

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Uranium-series analysis of the coral Allopora californica Verrill from the 2nd, 32-m Eel Point terrace on San Clemente Island, California, has yielded an age of 127,000 ± 7,000 yr. The Eel Point terrace is thus correlative with numerous terrace localities on the southern California mainland, with coral reefs on Barbados and New Guinea dated about 120,000 yr, and with substage 5e of the marine oxygen-isotope record. A tectonic uplift rate of about 0.20 m/1,000 yr has been calculated assuming a sea level slightly higher than the present one at the time of terrace formation. Extrapolation of this uplift rate allows …

The Nebraska Academy of Sciences is the oldest scientific organization in the state of Nebraska and was formed to encourage the exchange of scientific data and to improve the communication between the various disciplines of scientific research in the different educational institutions. Those were the goals a century ago. Today they are basically the same:

To promote the utilization of scientific talent in the State of Nebraska in cooperation with local, state, federal, and private organizations in addressing all problems of the environment as they relate to science, and,

To dedicate its collective and individual talents to promoting the best …

Biological And Medical Sciences Changes In Moisture Content Of Little Bluestem (Andropogon Scoparius) Standing Dead Following Rainfall, Thomas B. Bragg Jan 1982

Biological And Medical Sciences Changes In Moisture Content Of Little Bluestem (Andropogon Scoparius) Standing Dead Following Rainfall, Thomas B. Bragg

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Fires were a natural environmental factor in the development of the b1uestem prairie of North America. They occurred throughout the year including summer months when the region receives most of its annual rainfall (Moore, 1972). Since green vegetation, at its peak during the summer, is unlikely to support a fire alone, the principal fuel for summer fires is standing dead and litter accumulated during previous growing seasons. Previous studies indicate that grasslands can support a fire when the moisture content of combined standing live and dead plant matter is as high as 38% (Bragg, 1978). The length of time that …

Field Techniques And Research Methods In Geography, Robert Stoddard Jan 1982

Field Techniques And Research Methods In Geography, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Inexperienced researchers seeking to solve geographic problems are often confronted with a wide choice of techniques available for acquiring data. Unfortunately, information about these techniques is scattered among various publications. This text was written, therefore, for the purpose of assembling several potential field methods into one publication. It provides aspiring researchers with the opportunity to compare alternative types of data-gathering techniques and to select those appropriate to particular research problems.

Although the emphasis is on research in human geography, the techniques presented are useful for other groups of readers such as urban planners, regional planners, sociologists, and others concerned with …

The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga Oct 1981

The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the last ten years the "new social history" and its stepchild the "new urban history" have become the dominant sub field s within the history discipline; but the "new rural history" remains an orphan child with little recognized place as yet in academic curricula or historical writings.1 Unlike urban history, which is studied as a coherent whole, aspects of rural history are usually discussed under such rubrics as the westward movement, agricultural history, land history, frontier development, Indian history, and so forth.

The implicit assumption behind this disjointed scholarly perception is that rural history is an incongruity in …
