Review Of Early Prehistoric Agriculture In The American Southwest, By W. H. Wills. Santa Fe, New Mexico: School Of American Research Press, 1988. 196 Pages., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Last paragraph:

Wills's book provides archeologists with an innovative account of why and how past hunter-gatherers initially expanded their food-getting activities to include the cultivation of domesticated crops. His study makes use of a variety of subjects including r- and K-selection, density-dependent responses, risk minimization, the forager-collector continuum, maize phenology, Holocene environments, technological change, stylistic variation, social boundaries, and mating networks. Wills also offers new information and reassessments of the archeological record at Bat, Tularosa, Cordova, and Cienega Creek caves in the Mogollon highlands. He approaches the archeological literature for the American Southwest with healthy skepticism. And he challenges many …

Labor Organization And Textile Trade In Northern Thailand In The Nineteenth Century, Katherine A. Bowie Jan 1990

Labor Organization And Textile Trade In Northern Thailand In The Nineteenth Century, Katherine A. Bowie

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Thai peasant economy has frequently been characterized as a "subsistence economy" in which villagers planted their own rice and wove their own clothing. The uncritical use of the phrase "subsistence economy" has contributed to a series of significant misunderstandings about the character of the Thai peasant political economy, including the social process of cloth production.1

Because most scholars have assumed that obtaining clothing was not a problem for villagers, they have tended to minimize the significance of differences in dress between rich and poor in traditional nineteenth century Thai society. I believe that a better understanding of the …

Textiles In The Tourist Trade: Woollen Textile Production In Momostenango, Guatemala, Anne M. Lambert Jan 1990

Textiles In The Tourist Trade: Woollen Textile Production In Momostenango, Guatemala, Anne M. Lambert

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

Textile production in Guatemala has been the focus of a considerable amount of twentieth century literature in the English language. Guatemalan textiles have been avidly collected by museums, universities and private collectors in North America and Europe. Our belief as researchers and collectors is that we are recording and preserving the valuable textile traditions of the indigenous people of Guatemala.

What we often don't realize is that collectively, over time, we are saying as much about our own perspective as outsiders as we are about the Guatemalan people and their textiles. Our choices of what to document and what …

The Impact Of The Mediterranean Silk Trade On Western Europe Before 1200 A.D., Anna Maria Muthesius Jan 1990

The Impact Of The Mediterranean Silk Trade On Western Europe Before 1200 A.D., Anna Maria Muthesius

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Introduction

Silk, trade and politics were common spokes in an intricate wheel, propelling Mediterranean influence towards the West. At a time when Western Europe lacked the ability to manufacture silk cloth, Eastern silken stuffs were eagerly sought for secular and ecclesiastical purposes. Byzantium in particular, in return for silks, demanded Western military and naval aid, and her silk trade concessions bore the hallmark of powerful political bargaining counters. The survival of more than one thousand silks in church treasuries of Western Europe, provides unspoken insights into the complex impact of Mediterranean silk trade on the West before 1200 A.D. The …

Oglala Sioux Use Of Medical Herbs, George Robert Morgan, Ronald R. Weedon Jan 1990

Oglala Sioux Use Of Medical Herbs, George Robert Morgan, Ronald R. Weedon

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Despite the turmoil of Sioux cultural losses since contact with Anglo-European culture, the Oglala Sioux have maintained an interest in herbal medicines, although with each passing generation the number of plants actively used for curing has diminished. Fewer people have been learning the identification of plant medicines and their uses, the procedures for preparing plants, and the techniques of herbal cures. Many of the older Sioux blame reservation boarding schools for the disruption of cultural transmission, but other factors have been at work as well.

Spanish Exploration And The Great Plains In The Age Of Discovery: Myth And Reality, Ralph H. Vigil Jan 1990

Spanish Exploration And The Great Plains In The Age Of Discovery: Myth And Reality, Ralph H. Vigil

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T his essay attempts to place Spanish exploration on the Great Plains within the context of the temper and feelings prevailing in the first century of the "discovery" of the West. 1 Because many writers of texts and more specialized works view the past in the light of the present, European expansion in the sixteenth century appears to be more modem than it was. This paper views Spaniards of the early colonial period as more medieval than modem in outlook; it also suggests that mythological geography and mixed spiritual and worldly motives, considered incompatible in our day, were as important …

Review Of Essays On The Historical Geography Of The Canadian West: Regional Perspectives On The Settlement Process, Frank Tough Jan 1990

Review Of Essays On The Historical Geography Of The Canadian West: Regional Perspectives On The Settlement Process, Frank Tough

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Essays on the Historical Geography of the Canadian West is a fine example of a department's contribution to regional studies. The eight essays from six contributors in an attractive, readable, and well-bound monograph are a useful addition to western Canadian studies. The essays (Darby, "From River Boat to Raillines: Circulation Patterns in the Canadian West during the Last Quarter of the Nineteenth Century"; Holmes, "The Canmore Corridor, 1880-1914: A Case Study of the Selection and Development of a Pass Site"; Hadley, "Photography, Tourism and the CPR: Western Canada, 1884- 1914"; Evans, "The Origin of Ranching in Western Canada: American Diffusion …

Settlers, Sojourners, And Proletarians: Social Formation In The Great Plains Sugar Beet Industry, 1890-1940, Dennis Nodín Valdés Jan 1990

Settlers, Sojourners, And Proletarians: Social Formation In The Great Plains Sugar Beet Industry, 1890-1940, Dennis Nodín Valdés

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The sugar beet industry was in the forefront of the opening of the northern Great Plains to commercial agriculture. At the end of the nineteenth century, massive expanses of cheap land with ideal climatic and soil conditions were available on the Plains, but the sparse population afforded few farmers or field workers to block, thin, hoe, and top the sugar beets. Between 1890 and World War II, the sugar corporations devised three labor recruitment strategies that created classes of settlers, sojourners, and proletarians on the Great Plains. This essay examines the interaction between the sugar beet industry and its field …

The Mexican Immigrant Press Beyond The Boederlands: The Case Of El Cosmopolita, 1914-19, Michael M. Smith Jan 1990

The Mexican Immigrant Press Beyond The Boederlands: The Case Of El Cosmopolita, 1914-19, Michael M. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, a variety of factors-overpopulation, endemic poverty, inflation, stagnant wages, peonage, and, especially, the Mexican Revolution of 191O-drove hundreds of thousands of Mexicans from their homeland and into the United States. Although most of these migrants settled in the contiguous southwestern American states, tens of thousands proceeded north into the Great Plains and the Midwest, establishing dozens of colonias (settlements) in railroad centers, mining camps, industrial districts, and agricultural encampments. From 1900 until the Great Depression, the creation of these cultural islands of Mexican immigrants in such places as Oklahoma City, Kansas …

The Contest For The "Nile Of America": Kansas V. Colorado (1907), James E. Sherow Jan 1990

The Contest For The "Nile Of America": Kansas V. Colorado (1907), James E. Sherow

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he United States Supreme Court took its first notice of interstate squabbling over western water courses in the suit Kansas v. Colorado, 1907. 1 The decision failed to stem a steady onslaught of interstate water litigation, but the justices did achieve the means to adjudge water disputes between states. To understand the justices' accomplishment, or lack of it, requires what James Willard Hurst called a "social history of law," law related to society and to ideas outside the narrow confines of jurisprudence. Such a methodology proves a useful means for understanding the significance of Kansas v. Colorado. …

The Diamictons Of Rio Blanco Basin, Cordon Del Plata, Mendoza, William J. Wayne Jan 1990

The Diamictons Of Rio Blanco Basin, Cordon Del Plata, Mendoza, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Both the sediments and the geomorphic setting of the diamictons along Rio Blanco on the piedmont east of the Cordon del Plata indicate that they could not have been deposited there by a glacier tongue, as I and several earlier observers have suggesred Rather, they must have been deposits of long-runout debris flows, as argued by Polanski. Below 2600m, which is the altitude of the most extensive moraines of the last major glaciation, a late Pleistocene debris-flow fan fills the valley. From 2,200 m to the mountain front the narrow, V-shaped valley could not have been scoured by glacial ice. …

Review Of André Bord, Pascal Et Jean De La Croix, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen Jan 1990

Review Of André Bord, Pascal Et Jean De La Croix, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Bureaucracy, Institutional Change, And Deegan’S Theory Of Core Codes And Liberating Rituals, Michael R. Hill Jan 1990

Bureaucracy, Institutional Change, And Deegan’S Theory Of Core Codes And Liberating Rituals, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In American Ritual Dramas: Social Rules and Cultural Meanings (Greenwood Press, 1989), Mary Jo Deegan presents a theory of core codes and communitas that implicitly challenges the present organization of sociological practice in bureaucratic structures such as universities. The rituals of modern academic sociology are permeated by the same core codes that Deegan finds in many modern participatory and media-constructed rituals, specifically: the codes of oppression (class and sex codes) and the codes of repression (bureaucracy and time codes). Sociology remains little more than a rationalization for repressive and oppressive social control mechanisms unless it convincingly demonstrates and acts upon …
