Ec92-443 Let's Preserve: Fermented And Pickled Foods, Julie A. Albrecht Jan 1992

Ec92-443 Let's Preserve: Fermented And Pickled Foods, Julie A. Albrecht

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Pickles and relishes are very popular as a condiment to serve with meals. They are easy to make; however, the steps are very important to follow to insure a safe product. Many vegetables can be pickled. Cucumbers and cabbage are the main vegetables that are pickled.

Two types of pickling methods can be used to make a variety of pickled products: fermented pickles and fresh-pack or quick pickles.

Whooping Cranes In Southwest Louisiana: History And Human Attitudes, Gay M. Gomez Jan 1992

Whooping Cranes In Southwest Louisiana: History And Human Attitudes, Gay M. Gomez

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

When whooping cranes (Grus americana) inhabited southwest Louisiana's coastal marshes, residents viewed them as a food source and a crop pest, and shooting was commonplace. Local attitudes have changed as a result of education, stricter law enforcement, and decreased dependence on wildlife for subsistence, but hunting remains widespread. A 1977 proposal to reintroduce whooping cranes to southwest Louisiana generated strong opposition from the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission (now Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries), based on concerns about critical habitat and its likely impact on waterfowl hunting and other traditional marsh uses. These concerns remain, though …

Literature: A Rich Resource For Teaching Language And Culture In Context, Aleidine Kramer Moeller Jan 1992

Literature: A Rich Resource For Teaching Language And Culture In Context, Aleidine Kramer Moeller

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The proficiency emphasis in the teaching of foreign languages has brought with it a realistic and real-world application of language. The goal of a proficiency-oriented classroom is to talk in the language and not about the language. The curriculum, therefore, is no longer driven solely by grammar, but rather by communicative functions. Students are prepared to communicate on a variety of topics and learn to negotiate meaning in contexts "motivated by real communicative needs" (Littlewood 1985, p. 70). The learner becomes an active participant in the language-learning process and becomes a skill-user, not merely a skill-getter (Rivers 1972). Language teaching …

The Spatial Dimension Of Time, Luann Wandsnider Jan 1992

The Spatial Dimension Of Time, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeological research depends on the temporal structural of archaeological deposits. Temporal structure includes deposit age and the sequencing or the relative temporal order of one deposit to another. Another aspect is the temporal scale and resolution, or the degree of contemporaneity shared by deposits, Archaeology is also concerned with ethnographic time, that domain in which formation events occur, i.e., the temporal characteristics of activities with respect to the piece of land on which those activities occur. This chapter explores the issue of temporal resolution or deposit grain is it relates to the tempo of use witnessed by a locale.

Ages Of The Whitewater And Fairhaven Tills In Southwestern Ohio And Southeastern Indiana, Barry B. Miller, William D. Mccoy, William J. Wayne, C. Scott Brockman Jan 1992

Ages Of The Whitewater And Fairhaven Tills In Southwestern Ohio And Southeastern Indiana, Barry B. Miller, William D. Mccoy, William J. Wayne, C. Scott Brockman

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Alloisoleucine/isoleucine (aIle/Ile) ratios obtained from fossil mollusc shells collected at localities in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana, where they occur in silt beds associated with the Whitewater and Fairhaven tills, indicate a pre-Wisconsinan age for these tills, which had previously been thought to be early or middle Wisconsinan.

The aIle/Ile ratios in shells from beneath the buried soil (Sidney soil) and till exposed near Sidney, Ohio, are most similar to values in shells obtained from Illinoian sediments at Clough Creek in Hamilton County, Ohio; Mechanicsburg southwest, Illinois; and Trousdale Mine in Vermillion Co., Indiana. The first well-developed weathering profile in …

The Disaster Of Deforestation In The Brazilian Rainforest, Robert Stoddard Jan 1992

The Disaster Of Deforestation In The Brazilian Rainforest, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

In 1987, a major disaster occurred when an estimated eight million hectares of tropical forests in Brazil were destroyed (World Resources Institute 1990, 102). This event is considered a disaster because it was only the annual portion of an on-going process having immense spatial and temporal effects. The temporal impact is expected to remain virtually forever. In contrast to many disasters having a limited temporal impact because restoration is possible, the extermination of several biotic species associated with rainforest destruction is permanent. Likewise, some of the spatial effects have reached their potential areal maximum because they have affected the entire …

Phylogeny, Historical Biogeography, And Ecology Of Anophryocephalus Spp. (Eucestoda: Tetrabothriidae) Among Pinnipeds Of The Holarctic During The Late Tertiary And Pleistocene, Eric P. Hoberg, Ann M. Adams Jan 1992

Adams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Phylogenetic systematic analyses of Anophryocephalus spp. resulted in a single most-parsimonious cladogram (consistency index: 80%). Cladograms for pinniped hosts (phocids and otariids) and Anophryocephalus spp. were highly incongruent, corroborating a hypothesis for colonization as a dominant determinant of parasite diversification. Phoca (Pusa) spp. in the Atlantic basin are postulated as the initial hosts; range expansion for hosts and parasites into the Pacific basin through the Arctic (ca. 3.0-2.5 million years ago) was followed by radiation of Anophryocephalus spp. among Phoca spp. and subsequent colonization of otariids (Eumetopias jubatus as typical hosts; ca. 2.0 million years ago). Host …

How Do Resources Influence Time Of Calving: “Why We Calve Early”, John N. Price

Range Beef Cow Symposium

When I was asked to give this presentation on “WHY WE CALVE EARLY” I said this is easy “because it works for us.” Now that I sit down and think about why it works I find myself going over five generations of inspirations, frustrations, work, sleepless nights, and determination to understand why “IT WORKS FOR US”.

The Price Ranch is a family operation that has been in the family for five generations. The present day Prices consist of my father Richard Price, stepmother Lylamae, wife and best friend Pam, three children John R., Shannon and Angela and two excellent full …

Instrumental Valuation Indicators For Natural Resources And Ecosystems, F. Gregory Hayden Dec 1991

Instrumental Valuation Indicators For Natural Resources And Ecosystems, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Beldon Daniels, in the early draft of his latest book, which has a working title of Rediscovering America, 1992, has written that there have been four major eras in human history. The fourth, into which we are now evolving, according to Daniels, is the age of intelligence. Although the intelligence activity of the modern age both uses and directs the development of large quantities of data, information, and knowledge; a measurement concept, or unit for valuation has yet to be developed. The industrial age from which we are evolving, consistent with the technology of that era, has used industrial …

Review Of Sustainable Agriculture In Temperate Zones, Charles A. Francis, Cornelia Butler Flora, And Larry D. King, Eds., David R. Lighthall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The editors of Sustainable Agriculture in Temperate Zones have succeeded in compiling the diverse range of issues orbiting the expansive and somewhat nebulous concept of sustainable agriculture. The book contains well-written chapters by established experts drawn primarily from the mainstream sustainable agriculture movement within US land grant universities. The strength of the book is the authors' cogent reviews of leading edge research in their respective fields of expertise. These areas include soil chemistry and biology, plant breeding, crop rotations and legumes, pest management, pasture management, conversion to sustainable systems, production economics, rural development, and agricultural policy. Added to this eclectic …

Groundwater Levels in Nebraska, 1989, continues the excellent record of Nebraska Water Survey Papers produced by the Conservation and Survey Division and the US Geological Survey. The authors provide full color cartographic displays that are accurate as well as highly readable. Some of the maps treat the state of Nebraska for summary purposes. However, the greater value is found in the nine subregional large scale maps that cover the entire state in detail. Each map clearly displays the areas of significant water-level change that has occurred from the period of first reliable record through 1989. For Nebraskans, it should be …

Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith Aug 1991

Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Lewis' new book on Oglala ceremony and healing brings together observations and interpretations of his encounters with Lakota healers from the Pine Ridge Reservation during his stay there in the 1960s and 1970s. Lewis was readily incorporated into the community and entrusted with details of conceptions and sources of power which reflect both the relaxed political and social climate and the attitude of openness the Lakota then held about sharing knowledge of their traditions with outsiders. This is fortunate, both for Lewis and the reader, for much of the substance of what Lewis learned is fast disappearing as are the …

Review Of The Political Economy Of Manitoba, Edited By Jim Silver And Jeremy Hull, Ralph F. Harris Aug 1991

Review Of The Political Economy Of Manitoba, Edited By Jim Silver And Jeremy Hull, Ralph F. Harris

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Political Economy of Manitoba analyses the evolution of social, economic, and political marginalization concomitant with a wide range of struggle and conflict experienced by the people of the province. Its chapters provide significant empirical evidence of the nature and scope of this evolution. Underlying objectives of the contributions to this book are the support of activists in their popular struggles and the stimulation of progressive innovations in political policy. Two main perspectives are used in presentation. Historical analysis is used to show the origins and progression of growth. Analysis of more recent developments portrays the changing social and economic …

Economic Development Programs In The Great Plains: The Example Of Nebraska, Michael Broadway Aug 1991

Economic Development Programs In The Great Plains: The Example Of Nebraska, Michael Broadway

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In an effort to stem Nebraska's loss of population and create new employment opportunities, the State Legislature passed the Nebraska Employment and Investment Growth Act in 1987. The legislation provides various tax incentives to businesses that make new investments in the state or create "new jobs," the majority of which are located in metropolitan counties. However, the largest nuntber of jobs to result from this legislation is at IBP's beef-packing plant in Lexington. Previous studies of the impact of beef-packing plants upon small towns found high levels of social disruption associated with the arrival of the workers. Lexington, by contrast, …

Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart Aug 1991

Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

James R. Shortridge has cheerfully pursued the will-o'-the-wisp of trying to describe the "idea" of the Middle West in a book that was given the prestigious John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize of the Association of American Geographers in 1990. He argues that a careful reading of the kinds of popular publications that are indexed in the Renders' Guide to Periodical Literantre can reveal the personality and image of the region, what it originally meant to Americans, and how this meaning has changed. over time. Attempts to find meaning in places and things currently seem to be fashionable. Such efforts can be …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of Quartz Sand Surface Features, Ash Hollow Formation, Ogallala Group, Western Nebraska, Patricia E. Helland, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1991

Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of Quartz Sand Surface Features, Ash Hollow Formation, Ogallala Group, Western Nebraska, Patricia E. Helland, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In field studies of the late Tertiary Ash Hollow Formation of the Ogallala Group in western Nebraska the alluvial deposits are composed of large volumes of sand and gravel up to large cobbles. Because the current understanding of the climate of the region at the time of deposition does not provide for a source for deposits of this character, a scanning electron microscopic study of the surface features on the quartz sand grains from these sediments was undertaken. Nine samples, collected from locations in Banner, Morrill and Keith Counties, were examined to see if they had one or more of …

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1991

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

For most Americans, "The Great Plains" evokes images of grasslands, dust storms, prairie fires, Native Americans on horseback, cowboys and wheat lands, and perhaps flat valleys crossed by braided rivers carrying a heavy load of sand and gravel, extremes of weather, and a climate typified by an alternation of droughts and wetter periods. Geologists picture such general images, too, but they also see radical changes in the landscape over periods expressed in millions rather than hundreds of years. Geologically speaking, human activities on the Great Plains are too recent to have much of a place in the broad geologic history …

Late Paleozoic Cyclic Sedimentation In Southeastern Nebraska: A Field Guide, Roger K. Pabian, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1991

Late Paleozoic Cyclic Sedimentation In Southeastern Nebraska: A Field Guide, Roger K. Pabian, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

People studying and collecting sedimentary rocks, minerals, and fossils in eastern Nebraska often find that locating rock exposures can be difficult. Most of the rolling hills in the eastern sixth of the state are underlain by thick, interlayered, glacial deposits, loess (windblown silt), and alluvium (stream-deposited sediments) of very young geologic age. These sediments cover the bedrock in most of that area. Natural exposures and human excavations of bedrock are mostly confined to the sides and floors of stream valleys. However, in the southeasternmost counties of the state, the younger sediment cover is commonly thin or absent. Pawnee and Richardson …

Snow Cover Variability On The Northern And Central Great Plains, David A. Robinson, Marilyn G. Hughes Feb 1991

Snow Cover Variability On The Northern And Central Great Plains, David A. Robinson, Marilyn G. Hughes

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Winter snow cover duration has varied across the northern and central Great Plains of the United States throughout this century. Decade-to-decade variability has been common, and the timing of these fluctuations has differed considerably across the region. A general trend towards longer snow cover duration was noted from the 1920s and 1930s to the 1970s. Nine stations with continuous records of snow cover, temperature, precipitation, and snowfall dating back 61 to 97 years were studied. Snow cover fluctuations and trends are associated with changes of these other variables. Such relationships are complex and differ across the Great Plains. Correlations between …

Review Of The Sociology Of U.S. Agriculture: An Ecological Perspective, By Don E. Albrecht And Steve H. Murdock, Keith D. Parker Feb 1991

Review Of The Sociology Of U.S. Agriculture: An Ecological Perspective, By Don E. Albrecht And Steve H. Murdock, Keith D. Parker

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Albrecht and Murdock provide a thorough examination and discussion of the changing structure of American agriculture. The authors, adopting an integrated approach, examine the major trends and changes in farming and the causes of these changes. This book provides a theoretically informed framework that allows dimensions central to the understanding of past, present, and possible future changes in the structure of American agriculture. The text examines ecological factors that influence and are influenced by the changing structure of agriculture. It describes the relationship between technology and agriculture. The authors discuss nonfarm organizations such as government and financial and economic institutions …

Review Of Damming The Colorado: The Rise Of The Lower Colorado River Authority, 1933-1939, By John R. Adams, Jr., F. Andrew Schoolmaster Feb 1991

Review Of Damming The Colorado: The Rise Of The Lower Colorado River Authority, 1933-1939, By John R. Adams, Jr., F. Andrew Schoolmaster

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book provides an insightful and useful case study of political compromise and regional conflict resolution stemming from the construction of multipurpose development projects on the Colorado River of Texas. The author focuses on the maneuvering of Texas politicians such as James P. Buchanan, J. J. Mansfield, and Lyndon B. Johnson in creating the Lower Colorado River Authority, and bringing a New Deal reclamation project complete with dams, reservoirs, and hydroelectric power stations to central Texas. The book is divided into six chapters, supplemented by a brief introduction, an extensive collection of footnotes, and an excellent bibliography.

Sustainability Of The Great Plains In An Uncertain Climate, William E. Riebsame Feb 1991

Sustainability Of The Great Plains In An Uncertain Climate, William E. Riebsame

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The potential for social adaptation to climate change on the Great Plains is examined and a framework offered for sharpening the inquiry into regional agricultural sustainability. The future of Plains agriculture in a worsening climate depends on several factors, but a key characteristic is whether the system is fundamentally adaptable (able to change form and function markedly under new conditions) or resilient (likely to attempt to maintain "normal" operations via disaster relief and other social maintenance schemes in future droughts). In a cumulative climate deterioration, adaptive strategies are likely to yield less abrupt social dislocation, but debate over the sustainability …

Review Of Atlas Of American Indian Affairs, By Francis Paul Prucha, David J. Wishart Feb 1991

Review Of Atlas Of American Indian Affairs, By Francis Paul Prucha, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Anyone who has seriously studied United States-American Indian relations will be familiar with the work of Francis Paul Prucha. Perhaps the foremost scholar in this area, Prucha has published more than 20 books over the course of three decades, including the definitive synthesis of Federal Indian policy, The Great Father, which appeared in 1984 (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press). Less well known is Prucha's abiding interest in maps. In the preface to his new book, an Atlas of American Indian Affairs, Prucha admits that he has "long been fascinated by graphic display of statistical data, especially the presentation of geographical …

Review Of Watering The Valley: Development Along The High Plains Arkansas River, 1870-1950, By James Earl Sherow, James R. Shortridge Feb 1991

Review Of Watering The Valley: Development Along The High Plains Arkansas River, 1870-1950, By James Earl Sherow, James R. Shortridge

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Sherow is an environmental historian, one of an active group of scholars who have begun to assess Western development from a larger perspective than simple economic progress. He presents here an intelligent history and critique of water use in the upper Arkansas basin between Pueblo, Colorado, and Garden City, Kansas. In the years before 1950, developers never acknowledged water's place in the natural environment. Their plans soon required more water than was available but, rather than adjust to limitations, one exploiter blamed another and even more elaborate plans were conceived. It is a story that goes to the heart of …
