Review Of Leaning Into The Wind: Women Write From The Heart Of The West Edited By Edited By Linda Hasselstrom, Gaydell Collier, And Nancy Curtis., Tisha Gilreath-Mullen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Linda Hasselstrom (rancher and author of Windbreak, Going Over East, Land Circle, and Caught by One Wing), Gaydell Collier (rancher, director of the Crook County Public Library in Wyoming, and co-author of several books on horse training), and Nancy Curtis (rancher and owner-operator of the highly acclaimed High Plains Press) combined talents to edit Leaning into the Wind: Women Write from the Heart of the West. Contributors-of which there are at least two hundred-to this anthology of western women's writings offer a counter-balance to High Plains stereotypes popularized by those historians and writers who erased women's existence from …

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin Jul 1998

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The young British novelist Iza Hardy, during her travels to America in 1881-83, anticipated the American West as terra incagnitae, a place completely beyond civilization. Like many other British tourists to America in the late nineteenth century, Hardy traveled extensively throughout the East Coast and South, and took a transcontinental journey to the Pacific Coast by train (Fig. O. Out of her American travels Hardy produced Between Two Oceans: Or, Sketches of American Travel (1884) and a book about Florida. Hardy's coverage of the western portion of her American journey followed the transect the railroad did, with chapters of …

Visualizing Uncertainty Of The Great Plains Boundary, Sonja Lynn Rossum May 1998

Visualizing Uncertainty Of The Great Plains Boundary, Sonja Lynn Rossum

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Geographic regions all have some degree of uncertainty, though this is seldom represented on their maps. The Great Plains is an excellent example of how even a well known and widely accepted region can be a source of cartographic confusion. This region is fuzzy in nature, with few landforms or sharp changes in characteristics to help locate the boundary line. Also, the act ofregionalization itself is a highly subjective process, using defining criteria and methods of mapping selected by the cartographer.

The uncertainty of the Great Plains boundary location is shown by comparing many such interpretations from individual cartographers, all …

Mammals [Of The Sand Hills], Patricia W. Freeman May 1998

Mammals [Of The Sand Hills], Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Of approximately 81 species of mammals present in Nebraska today, 55 occur in the Sand Hills, with an additional three species that are associated only with the Niobrara River. Nebraska as a whole is truly a crossroads for mammals because two-thirds of the species reach their distributional limits in the state (Jones, 1964). Most of these mammals are widespread species or are specific to the grasslands as a whole and are not affected by this sandy zone. Jones (1964) wrote that “only a few mammals are restricted to this area. Mostly it serves to filter western species moving east and, …

Review Of North American Exploration: A Continent Defined Edited By John Logan Allen, Leslie Hewes Apr 1998

Review Of North American Exploration: A Continent Defined Edited By John Logan Allen, Leslie Hewes

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

A Continent Defined is the second of three volumes on North American discovery edited by geographer John Logan Allen. For this volume, six contributors-three historians and three geographers, all North Americans were recruited.

The discoverers dealt with were, of course, late-comers who found long-term residents already there. Native Americans commonly supplied guides and sometimes maps, indispensable services. One wonders if a citation of G. Malcolm Lewis, of Sheffield, England, for his work on maps by aboriginals is not deserved.

Review Of Atlas Of The New West: Portrait Of A Changing Region Edited By William Riebsame With Maps By James Robb, Michael F. Logan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

What do Dallas, Los Angeles, Omaha, and Seattle have in common? All are situated outside the New West, according to the creators of the Atlas of the New West. Should readers of Great Plains Research bother with this latest entry into the New Western genre? Yes. The book's effort to come to an understanding of a contemporary, identifiable region of the United States is commendable. Anyone interested in the study of western history and culture will find something to add to his or her understanding of the western region in this atlas. On the other hand, many readers will …

Review Of People Of The Great Plains By Peter Miller, Gregory L. Morris Apr 1998

Review Of People Of The Great Plains By Peter Miller, Gregory L. Morris

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In his introduction, Peter Miller declares of the Great Plains: "This is a metaphysical land." By the time both he and his reader, however, make their way through the visual and literary territory covered in this. handsome volume, the Great Plains come to seem far less metaphysical and far more problematical a place. While Miller reinforces some of the traditional mythology of the Plains in his complementary texts and photographs-the elemental and inherent freedom of Plains life, the stubborn resilience of its people, the soul that resides in geography-he also explores the contradictions that have come in time to trouble …

Review Of The Frontiers Of Women's Writing: Women's Narratives And The Rhetoric Of Westward Expansion By Brigitte Georgi-Findlay, Karen M. Morin Apr 1998

Review Of The Frontiers Of Women's Writing: Women's Narratives And The Rhetoric Of Westward Expansion By Brigitte Georgi-Findlay, Karen M. Morin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Georgi-Findlay takes on the seemingly impossible task of synthesizing one hundred years of women's writing about American westward expansion. While focusing each chapter on just a few key texts, she draws widely on the works of Anglo-American novelists, journalists, settlers, travelers, tourists, army officers' wives, missionaries, and teachers, writing about a geographical area extending from Mackinaw Island to Puget Sound to Santa Fe. The author constructs a female counterpoint to male renditions of frontier adventure and conquest, but at the same time explores how white women's cultural practices existed in complicity with American territorial acquisition.

The book's three parts are …

Women Writing About Farm Women, Becky Faber Apr 1998

Women Writing About Farm Women, Becky Faber

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

I spent the first sixteen years of my life on Iowa farms. We lived in rural Adair County, Iowa, in an area that was remote, quietly tucked about halfway between Des Moines and Omaha. All I knew was rural life. My parents were farmers, my grandparents were farmers, and most of my uncles and aunts were farmers. The farm determined many elements of my life. We raised much of our own food, butchered our own beef and pork, raised chickens for eggs and meat, milked cows and sold the cream, wore clothes that defined our tasks such as overalls and …

Review Of The Geography Of Manitoba: Its Land And Its People Edited By John Welsted, John Everitt, And Christoph Stadel, Paul Hackett

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Geography of Manitoba, a wide-ranging look at Canada's Keystone Province, comprises a collection of papers grouped into four sections dealing with the province's physical geography, people, resources and industries, and recreation. Supplementing the major essays are brief case studies (thirty-nine in all) that examine specific topics related to the sections within which they appear. The text is amply supported throughout by excellent black-and-white maps, as well as by illustrations, photographs, tables, and several color plates.

Review Of Wetlands Of The American Midwest: A Historical Geography Of Changing Attitudes By Hugh Prince, Sanford Sandy Kaplan Apr 1998

Review Of Wetlands Of The American Midwest: A Historical Geography Of Changing Attitudes By Hugh Prince, Sanford Sandy Kaplan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

I wish I could recommend this book as a "must read" for anyone interested in the history and development of the Great Plains region; however, I cannot. For one thing, the Great Plains per se are rarely discussed in it, and the subject is certainly not a topic of universal interest. I can recommend the book, however, as a highly readable and well-documented study of the change in our perceptions of the wetlands of the Midwest over time. Hugh Prince has done a magnificent job of gathering a great deal of scattered information and using it to illustrate his idea …

We analyzed the relationship between new ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) and irradiance (as photosynthetic photon flux density of PPFD), using published and unpublished data that have been collected during midgrowing season for carbon balance studies at seven peatlands in North America and Europe. NEE measurements included both eddy-correlation tower and clear, static chamber methods, which gave very similar results. Data were analyzed by site, as aggregated data set for all peatland type (bog, poor fen, rich fen, and all fens) and as a single aggregated data set for all peatlands. In all cases, a fit with a rectangular …

Air Temperature Variations And Rice Productivity In Bangladesh: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of The Yield And The Ceres-Rice Models, Rezaul Mahmood Mar 1998

Air Temperature Variations And Rice Productivity In Bangladesh: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of The Yield And The Ceres-Rice Models, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Potential increase in air temperature due to climatic change and inter-annual climatic variability and its impacts on crop productivity is of major concern to crop scientists. A number of physically-based models have been developed and applied to estimate crop–environment relationships. In the present study the performance of two such models (the YIELD and the CERES-Rice) are discussed. These two models are used to estimate boro rice productivity under normal and abnormal climate scenarios in Bangladesh. This study finds that boro rice productivity at Mymensingh predicted by the YIELD is higher than the prediction by the CERES-Rice. Productivity estimates for Barisal …

Climatology Of The Daily Temperature Range Annual Cycle In The United States, Daniel J. Leathers, Michael A. Palecki, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Many researchers are presently interested in detecting long-term trends in annual or seasonal daily temperature range (DTR), and attributing these changes to anthropogenic origins. However, very little work has been done to confirm the mechanisms that are important to determining the long-term average annual cycle of the DTR. Therefore, the focus of this work is to examine the spatial and temporal difference in the DTR average annual cycle across the United States, and to associate the patterns of these cycles with potential causal variables. Three major types of DTR annual cycle exist in the United States: high sun season maximum …

The Evolution Of Primate Malaria Parasites Based On The Gene Encoding Cytochrome B From The Linear Mitochondrial Genome, Ananias A. Escalante, Denise E. Freeland, William E. Collins, Altaf A. Lal

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

We report a phylogenetic analysis of primate malaria parasites based on the gene encoding the cytochrome b protein from the mitochondrial genome. We have studied 17 species of Plasmodium, including 14 parasitic in primates. In our analysis, four species were used for rooting the Plasmodium phylogenetic tree: two from closely related genera (Hepatocystis sp. and Haemoproteus columbae) and two other Apicomplexa (Toxoplasma gondii and Theileria parva). We found that primate malaria parasites form a monophyletic group, with the only exception being the Plasmodium falciparum–Plasmodium reichenowi lineage. Phylogenetic analyses that include two species …

"Introduction" To European Immigrants In The American West: Community Histories, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1998

"Introduction" To European Immigrants In The American West: Community Histories, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

European immigrants are the forgotten people of the American West. Their stories are not told in the many books, paintings, and movies that have created the mythic West. Immigrants did not easily fit the image of the West as the bastion of unfettered individualism and self-reliance-a region peopled by the free, brave, and pure-battling against the urbanized, industrialized, a,nd economically dominant East. Nor do European immigrants populate the pages of frontier history. Ever since Frederick Jackson Turner opened the field a hundred years ago, general histories of the American frontier have tended to ignore them. Grounded on the Turnerian notion …

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne Jan 1998

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Since 1950, Alberta Agriculture has supervised and coordinated a rural-based Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) control program that has essentially kept the province rat-free. Success is achieved by eliminating invading rats within a control zone 600 km long and 30 km wide along the eastern border of the province. A systematic detection and eradication system is used throughout the zone to keep rat infestations to a minimum. Strong public support and citizen participation was developed through public education and a sound awareness effort. Although rat infestations within the interior are minor, a rat response plan is in place to …

Non-Predator Vertebrate Pest Damage In California Agriculture: An Assessment Of Economic Impacts In Selected Crops, Brent Hueth, Daniel Cohen, David Zilberman Jan 1998

Non-Predator Vertebrate Pest Damage In California Agriculture: An Assessment Of Economic Impacts In Selected Crops, Brent Hueth, Daniel Cohen, David Zilberman

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

State-wide economic impacts of non-predator vertebrate pest damage were estimated for all pests causing damage in 19 California commodities. Average field-level damage estimates and vertebrate control costs were collected for each commodity, and across six production regions. Economic impacts were estimated by comparing simulated market outcomes in the absence of vertebrate pest damage with observed market outcomes. This analysis indicates that, for the 19 commodities considered, the economic cost of vertebrate pest damage ranged between $46.9 to $162.8 million during 1995 with a mean estimated impact of $95.9 million.
