"The Last Buffalo Hunt" And Beyond Plains Sioux Economic Strategies In The Early Reservation Period, Jeffrey Ostler Apr 2001

"The Last Buffalo Hunt" And Beyond Plains Sioux Economic Strategies In The Early Reservation Period, Jeffrey Ostler

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Sometime in late May 1882, several thousand bison appeared on the Great Sioux reservation about 100 miles west of the Standing Rock Indian agency (see Fig. O. According to James McLaughlin, the Standing Rock agent, the Indians knew "instinctively" that the buffalo had arrived, even though "it had been many years since the buffalo had sought the hunting-grounds of that part of the reservation." With this "rich store of succulent meat in sight," McLaughlin continued, "it was not possible that the Indians could be held in check." On 10 June, over 600 Standing Rock Lakota and Yanktonais left the agency. …

The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, Susan Wunder, John R. Wunder

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The summer of 2000 marked the grand opening of the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument just east of Kearney, Nebraska, on Interstate 80. Costing approximately $60 million the site features exhibits on the history of the American West in the first and only "museum" to straddle an interstate highway. At the 16 July grand opening, former Nebraska Governor Frank Morrison, a spry ninety-five years, reminisced before an audience of over six hundred, including both of Nebraska's US senators and its current governor, about having realized his dream of honoring the nation's westward movement.

Coverage of the event in the …

What The Past Can Provide: Contribution Of Prehistoric Bison Studies To Modern Bison Management, Kenneth Cannon Apr 2001

What The Past Can Provide: Contribution Of Prehistoric Bison Studies To Modern Bison Management, Kenneth Cannon

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

For over 100 years, bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area have been managed intensely. Even during the years of "natural regulation," bison herds have been heavily managed by culling. One of the fundamental goals of the plan for the Greater Yellowstone Area is to maintain the ecosystem's integrity using sound science. In order to reach this goal, it must be recognized that it is a dynamic system, continually undergoing change. However, our knowledge of such changes is extremely limited. In the case of bison, our knowledge is based on nonsystematically collected historic records and modern studies of small, isolated populations. …

Integrated Management Tactics To Assess Risk And Reduce Damage To Conifer Reforestation By Pocket Gophers, Richard M. Engeman, Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In the western United States, pocket gophers pose an acute and chronic problem for forest managers to overcome. Gophers cause extensive damage to seedlings and can delay reforestation for decades.. Here we examine the predictive factors for assessing the risk for damage and the available control tools and damage control strategies. The information is reviewed and summarized so that an integrated damage reduction plan can be developed in a logical, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible fashion..

When American Sneezes Does Nebraska Catch Cold?, Charles Lamphear, John Austin Mar 2001

When American Sneezes Does Nebraska Catch Cold?, Charles Lamphear, John Austin

Business in Nebraska

The latest economic forecast for Nebraska by the Nebraska Business Forecast Council appeared in the January 2001 issue of Business in Nebraska, and reported a 0.9 percent growth in nonfarm employment this year and a 6.1 percent growth in nonfarm personal income. The 0.9 percent employment growth rate is well below the average annual growth rate of 2.1 percent during the 1990s. This forecast largely reflects the state's extremely tight labor market, not the current national economic slowdown.

Coyote Responses To Changing Jackrabbit Abundance Affect Sheep Predation, L. Charles Stoddart, Richard E. Griffiths, Frederick F. Knowlton Jan 2001

Coyote Responses To Changing Jackrabbit Abundance Affect Sheep Predation, L. Charles Stoddart, Richard E. Griffiths, Frederick F. Knowlton

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Domestic sheep ranchers generally perceive abundances of natural prey and coyotes (Canis latrans) as important factors affecting coyote predation rates on sheep. To determine the effect of a changing natural prey base on coyote predation rates, we estimated coyote density and predation rates on ewes and lambs during part of 1 cycle of black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) abundance on a 2,300 km2 area of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in south-central Idaho from 1979–1985. We used 100, 1.6-km scat collection lines and 80, 1.6-km flushing transects to assess coyote and jackrabbit densities, respectively. Ewe and …

2001 Platte River Basin Ecosystem Symposium Proceedings

Water Current Newsletter

Over 75 people braved the wintry weather to attend the Eleventh Platte River Basin Ecosystem Symposium that convened in Kearney on 27 February 2001. Icy roads lead to cancellation of only 2 papers. Seventeen papers were presented and 5 posters were on display. Nebraska Public Radio and NTV News covered the event. The presentations were excellent and participants were well satisfied with not only the program but also the food. This year the symposium broadened its charge to include more discussion on community-based environmental protection, sustainable development, and policy-making. The Symposium was sponsored by the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension …

Introduction: Unpacking The Research Encyclopedia, Josephine M. Carubia, Renata S. Engel Jan 2001

Introduction: Unpacking The Research Encyclopedia, Josephine M. Carubia, Renata S. Engel

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

Ernest Boyer's work is the touchstone for most contemporary discussions about research and scholarship and is as pertinent to undergraduate research as to the professional research of faculty. This introduction will begin with Boyer so that his definitions and philosophies may inform additional discussions concerning the epistemologies, methodologies, and hierarchies embedded within the creative human pursuits we call research and scholarship. Boyer's work may be valued as much for the vocabulary it endows upon this conversation as for its impact on the values and purposes of higher education. His articulation of terminology for a range of creative pursuits under the …

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

This paper describes a model of service leadership that can be followed by university students throughout their academic career. The intent of this project is to help students understand their growth .in civic responsibility and leadership and to put it in context with the growth of other students. Using a grounded-theory approach from quantitative and qualitative surveys and case studies, the research team of seven undergraduates and two staff members from the Schreyer Honors College developed three distinct, non-exclusive tracks that revolve around a theme of vision development. The three tracks include Service to the On-Campus Community, Service to the …

How (Or Whether?) To Integrate Research Into Classroom Teaching For All Students And All Higher Education Institutions, Alan Jenkins Jan 2001

How (Or Whether?) To Integrate Research Into Classroom Teaching For All Students And All Higher Education Institutions, Alan Jenkins

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

The chapter starts by posing a range of questions re teaching/research relations and, in particular, asks whether such is only for selected students in elite/wealthy institutions. The issues are complex and before considering the evidence some of this complexity is discussed-for our answers to the chapter'~ central questions depend in part on how we 'define' 'undergraduate research' or 'linking teaching and research.' The arguments, including research evidence that undergraduate research should be for selected students, are then presented, including a major review of the research which concludes that the 'common belief that teaching and research are inextricably intertwined is an …

Ecoregions Of Nebraska And Kansas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 2001

Ecoregions Of Nebraska And Kansas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. Ecoregions are directly applicable to the immediate needs of state agencies, including the development of biological criteria and water quality standards, and the establishment of management goals for nonpoint-source pollution. They are also relevant to integrated ecosystem management, an ultimate goal of most federal and state resource management agencies. The approach used to compile this map is based on the premise …

Potential Impacts Of State Meat And Poultry Inspection For The State Of Nebraska, Kara Slaughter, Sam Cordes, Alan Tomkins, Lyn Kathlene Jan 2001

Potential Impacts Of State Meat And Poultry Inspection For The State Of Nebraska, Kara Slaughter, Sam Cordes, Alan Tomkins, Lyn Kathlene

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Since 1907, Federal law has mandated the inspection of all slaughter and processing establishments engaging in interstate sales of meat and poultry products. In the late 1960’s, Congress expanded the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Acts to also require inspection of establishments selling within state lines. At that time, Congress intended for individual states to take on the responsibility for monitoring intra-state meat and poultry sales, using standards “at least equal to” the Federal guidelines for interstate establishments.

At present, 27 states do maintain their own state inspection programs, at an average cost of $1,882,319 per state, per year. In …

Remote Estimation Of Vegetation Fraction In Corn Canopies, D. Rundquist, Anatoly A. Gitelson, D. Derry, J. Ramirez, R. Stark, Galina P. Keydan

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The aim of the paper was to test two new techniques that make use of channels in the visible range of the spectrum only to estimate vegetation fraction in corn canopies. High spectral resolution radiometers were employed to measure spectral reflectance, and the information content of spectra was investigated. Radiances in spectral channels of MODIS and MERIS were used to calculate Visible Atmospherically Resistant Indices, VARIgreen=(Rgreen- Rred)/(Rgreen+Rred-Rblue) and VARI700=(R700-1.7*Rred+0.7*Rblue)/(R700+2.3*Rred-1.3*Rblue). The indices allowed for estimation …

Collection Development In The New Millennium–Evaluating, Selecting, Annotating, Organizing For Ease Of Access, Reevaluating, And Updating Electronic Resources, Virginia A. Baldwin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The literature of the early 1990s suggested changes in the structure of collection management itself in order to accommodate the changes both now occurring and those foreseen. Sheila Creth wrote in 1991 "Until recently, the primary focus of collection development has been on building collections." She outlined the functions of collection management in academic libraries to include: selection of materials, weeding, preservation, liaison with faculty and academic departments, reference and user education, fiscal responsibility, and policy development. Creth saw the necessity for a basic change in the library’s organization structure. "According to the principles of organizational design, the traditional structure …

Monitoring Large Areas For Forest Change Using Landsat: Generalization Across Space, Time And Landsat Sensors, Curtis E. Woodcock, Scott A. Macomber, Mary Pax-Lenney, Warren B. Cohen

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Landsat 7 ETM+ provides an opportunity to extend the area and frequency with which we are able to monitor the Earth’s surface with fine spatial resolution data. To take advantage of this opportunity it is necessary to move beyond the traditional image-by-image approach to data analysis. A new approach to monitoring large areas is to extend the application of a trained image classifier to data beyond its original temporal, spatial, and sensor domains. A map of forest change in the Cascade Range of Oregon developed with methods based on such generalization shows accuracies comparable to a map produced with current …

Models For The Adaptive Harvest Management Of Rocky Mountain Sandhill Cranes: Problems And Potential, William L. Kendall, Roderick C. Drewien

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

The migratory Rocky Mountain Population (RMP) of the greater sandhill crane (Grus canadensis tabida) breeds primarily in river valleys, marshes, and meadows of western Montana and Wyoming, southeastern Idaho, northern Utah, and northwestern Colorado. The RMP winters primarily in the Middle Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, with smaller concentrations in the southwestern parts of that state, southeastern Arizona, and the northern highlands of Mexico. The San Luis Valley of Colorado is used as a stopover in both the spring and fall migrations. The RMP has been hunted on a permit basis since 1981, and currently these cranes …

Multiple Spatial Scale Analysis Of Whooping Crane Habitat In Nebraska, Amy L. Richert, Kevin E. Church Jan 2001

Multiple Spatial Scale Analysis Of Whooping Crane Habitat In Nebraska, Amy L. Richert, Kevin E. Church

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing technologies were used to evaluate whooping crane stopover habitat in Nebraska. The goal of the research was to investigate habitat selection at multiple spatial scales. The GIS database consisted of all confirmed whooping crane sightings reported in Nebraska from 1975-1996 and land cover information delineated from color infrared aerial photographs and Landsat Thematic Mapper data. Results suggest that whooping cranes select roost habitat by recognizing site-level and landscape-scale land cover composition. Wetland is the most strongly selected habitat type at all spatial scales examined. This presentation emphasizes methods used to analyze habitat selection …

Why Involve Students In Research?, Rodney A. Erickson Jan 2001

Why Involve Students In Research?, Rodney A. Erickson

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

This article addresses the benefits of undergraduate research to students, to faculty, and to universities. Research experiences are credited with increasing motivation for learning, helping undergraduate students decide on a career path, forming mentoring relationships between students and faculty, and improving student performance in writing, speaking, and working in teams. For many students, research experiences are their most memorable experiences as undergraduates. From the perspective of universities, students bring enthusiasm to research teams and often ask insightful questions-sometimes quite by accident-that can change the ways faculty approach research inquiries. Student researchers contribute to the world of knowledge. Research universities have …

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday Jan 2001

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Mostly stabilized late Holocene eolian sands on the Southern High Plains of the United States were studied to determine their origins and to assess whether present dune stability depends more strongly on sediment supply, sediment availability, or transport limitations. Geomorphic, sedimentological, and geochemical trends indicate that late Holocene dunes formed under westerly paleowinds, broadly similar to those of today. Mineralogical and geochemical data indicate that the most likely source for the sands is not the Pecos River valley, but the Pleistocene Blackwater Draw Formation, an older, extensive eolian deposit in the region. These observations suggest that new sand is supplied …
